¶ Overcoming Limiting Beliefs and Stuckness
Welcome to Strong , not Starving . My name's Marcus Kane , and if you want to beat binge eating and create a rewarding dynamic with food , exercise and body image , you're in the right place . The information in this podcast is not intended as a substitute for medical advice .
So , on the road out of binge eating and struggling in our dynamic with body image and exercise , what to do if we get stuck , feeling trapped , like you're in a bit of a stalemate between where you want to go and where you currently are , is an experience that's really common along this path , like feeling trapped and limiting habits with food and exercise that are
making your life kind of miserable , but at the same time , feeling afraid to change anything in any kind of meaningful way , like anything that resembles a path out of that situation can seem pretty intangible at times , especially if it's all that you've known , and you know if it's all that we've done or all that we've been doing for a long period of time , and
can't really see what the road forward might look like . So this is a quick fire kind of conversation about getting unstuck Now , without pausing to think too much .
Join me on this train of thought for a second and do your best to approach this with a clean mental slate , because the voice in your head that's keeping you stuck by limiting your options is going to appear really quickly .
So when you do inevitably hear that internal debate or that internal voice of doubt , just say you know , okay , dude , I hear you , I totally get it , I hear you . That's all very concerning and very scary , but please , I'm having a different conversation right now . So just do your best . When you notice that voice of doubt come up .
When you notice that voice of disordered eating come up , do your best to let it just be in the background for a second and bring yourself to what we're talking about here right now . So think back to something that you believed with absolute certainty that turned out to be less true than you thought it was .
Sometimes it can help with this to start with something funny and work your way towards something more meaningful . Like I remember believing with absolute certainty that I was never going to enjoy country music and let me tell you , my 21 year old self would be absolutely terrified by some of the items in my present record collection .
I also remember thinking that the secret to meeting the love of my life was having a six pack and an expensive London apartment . Now my wife fucking hates London and doesn't give a shit if I have a six pack or not .
So give yourself a moment and , when you've thought of a couple of old beliefs that turned out to be sideways , think about what you believe about yourself in your life right now . Think about the things that generally limit you and ask yourself what if things could be different ?
Like what if these things I believe hold elements of truth rather than the whole truth ? What if there are some pieces missing from the conclusions that I've drawn about myself , or what I'm capable of , or what's possible for me ?
Just floating those questions in your mind , without hitting them too hard , can be really helpful , because for a lot of people I know right now , in this moment , as I say these things , there's that little voice that I mentioned before that pops up and says yeah , for other people maybe , but not me .
¶ Challenging Biases on Body Image
Like , I've got concrete evidence to prove that what I believe is backed by nothing but fact .
And it's not my intention to get heavy on you here or call you out , but someone once told me any belief you have that you wouldn't be able to defend successfully in court isn't an objective belief , it's a subjective opinion and that rocked my world a little bit when I heard it , because at the time I was defending my belief surrounding you know , losing my
hair and feeling ugly . What I believed about myself at that time couldn't have been further from the fucking truth . The degree that I was limiting myself was just immeasurable . But at the time I believed that with 100% certainty and none of us are immune from developing personal biases we see the world certain ways . We confirm our own biases .
One of the most constructive things we can do if we're feeling stuck in this stalemate is just to acknowledge that we don't need to go after our like you know what some people call limiting beliefs really hard and really aggressively and in ways that create kind of internal conflict .
But something that we can do that's much more helpful sometimes is just recognize that we all have these personal biases . None of us are objective as we think we are , especially when it comes to things like , you know , body image and food and this kind of stuff . If we've struggled with this , ordered eating .
And of course , I know that separating objective truths from personal bias when it comes to our own opinions of ourselves is really fucking hard because our old beliefs start defending themselves .
So if you feel stuck in a stalemate with your dynamic , with like food and body image , and you're trying to break out of these miserable cycles but also , you know , feel afraid to change anything , don't go to war with your existing anxious beliefs .
They are there for a reason most likely to try and protect you from something , even if they're doing a really bad job of it , kind of like an aggressive protective dog . Protective dog stopping paramedics from helping its injured master . Like this is how some of our beliefs work .
They're born out of a desire to make sure we're safe and even if they do like a shitty job and cut you off from living a full life in the process , that's not their intention . So go easy on the self-criticism if you're feeling stuck and be mindful of anyone or anything in your current environment . That's reinforcing beliefs that aren't serving you anymore .
A really easy one to start auditing really quickly and immediately , like start today , is like social media pages that you're following , podcasts that you're listening to , anything like that that reinforces beliefs and patterns that are keeping you stuck . Like any content that is just driven by this idea of a total preoccupation with optimization .
So anything that constantly focuses on getting really granular with things and picking apart like the best possible diet or the best possible exercise regime . Let it go for now , really Like there is so much wiggle room and there is so much space to grow and move and be adaptable and try different things with nutrition and exercise and everything .
There are so many correct answers . It is just that in the social media and podcasting and YouTube space and everything like that , it's a proven method of getting eyes on content to paint this picture of having the optimal solution . This is what you need to do to be optimal . This is what you need to do to achieve optimal health .
This is the best diet , this is the best . All this preoccupation with the best of something when really that's just a tactic that different social media pages and whatever use to get eyes on their stuff . I know I'm repeating myself right now , but that's just a really low hanging fruit that you can notice and action right away .
Get rid of anything from your content library that is always kind of coming at you with painting this idea of like the best possible way to do stuff and the best foods to eat and the best way to diet and the best way to fuck . It Just really like fuck it . That stuff is all fictional . It is just attention grabbing crap .
There are so many ways to get this right and if you wanna get a jump start on this , I've got my new mini course coming out on November 1st . It's called Identify your Binge Triggers and Take Preemptive Action , and it does exactly what it says on the box .
