『かちかち山』は、いわゆる日本五大昔話（『桃太郎』『さるかに合戦』『舌切り雀』『花咲か爺さん』）の一つで、江戸時代に赤本として広まりました。『かちかち山』や『さるかに合戦』が持て囃されたのは、元禄忠臣蔵の影響で仇討ちものが流行したためのようです。
