So , when it comes to actually getting rid of alcohol from your life , why is it always so hard ? Why does so many people struggle to not drink ? Well , today I'm going to explain exactly why most people struggle to quit alcohol , and it's not what you think . It's something completely different .
But once you understand the real reason I'm not talking about what most people think is the reason . I'm talking about the real reason . Once you see that , it's like a light bulb moment and you'll see the issue for what it is . And once you see it , you can't unsee it .
So this is going to be one of the most powerful videos that you've ever seen when it comes to getting in control of your own drinking . So what's the first thing people do if they fail to stop drinking ? Nine times out of 10 , they do something damaging . They blame themselves . Oh , I'm a failure . Oh , I've just not got a lot of willpower .
Oh , you know , maybe I'm an alcoholic . Maybe I've got an addictive personality , maybe I'm different to everybody else . See , too many people blame themselves , and I spent the best part of ten years doing that . But I want to tell you one thing right now you struggling to not drink alcohol is not your fault . It's got nothing to do with you .
See , the question isn't why do people struggle in the society that we live in ? How can you not struggle ? Think about it . Firstly , let's just look at alcohol . What's the nature of alcohol ? Well , you drink one and you want to drink more . It dehydrates you , it lowers your inhibitions and it's incredibly , incredibly addictive .
So if that's the case , if the compound of this drug is like that , how can it not be difficult ? Of course it's going to be difficult . So add on to that society and how society views alcohol . See , we've normalized consuming a drug .
We turn the TV on , we go on the news , we watch a movie , we scroll on social media , we walk into a store , we watch a sporting event that's sponsored by a drug company . It is 100% normalized . And it's not just normalized , it's glamorized . Look at the marketing , look at how it's portrayed . We don't see car crashes . We don't see DUIs .
We don't see anything like that . We see success , we see sophistication , we see glamour , we see socializing , we see relaxation . Just look how normal consuming this drug is . And then finally go and actually look at the statistics of traditional stop drinking programs . Now listen , I'm not going to start criticizing other programs , right ?
Whatever , however , people find success . It's up to them .
But if you're interested , you can actually go and find data that shows that the success rate of some programs very popular programs out there is actually lower than people stopping drinking totally on their own , which then makes you wonder like , hang on , are these programs actually doing good or are they actually doing more damage than good ?
Because there would be an argument for that . If the success rate is lower than people doing it on their own , then hang on , what's actually going on ? What's the gap ?
So we have these three elements the addictive nature of alcohol , the conditioning , the way it's been portrayed and that's been happening from day one of being born , and the fact that most methods out there actually make stopping drinking difficult . And out of these three things , what's your fault ?
See , the nature of over-drinking , of drinking too much , of getting addicted to alcohol , has got nothing to do with you . How can people stop smoking cigarettes and then never be labelled a nicotine-aholic . But alcohol is different . We label ourselves , we think it's our fault , we think we've got low willpower , we're different .
But then we actually look at what makes up alcohol and society's worldview and we actually think of how we've been conditioned to see it . That's when we start to realise that this is not our fault . See , you as a person are not the problem , but there is something within you that actually is the problem .
See , if we believe that we're the problem , we can never truly fix ourselves . But there's a changing part of who you are that does need fixing , but it isn't actually . You See , the thing that stops most people from stopping drinking are our beliefs , and you need to figure out what specific beliefs are actually holding you back .
See , when I stopped drinking alcohol this is what I did I realized that I had so many incorrect beliefs about alcohol addiction . Stopping drinking . There was just so much nonsense in my brain . You know , I had a period of my life where I went to AA . I thought I was an alcoholic .
When I started drinking again , what do you think happened If I believed that I was an alcoholic ? If I had that belief ? Of course it's going to be hard for me to not drink . I thought I'm the type of person that doesn't stop at one . I always go overboard because I'm an alcoholic . Are you getting this Like ? Of course I'm going to be worse ?
I thought I wasn't going to be as fun to be around . I thought I wasn't going to be able to relax . And it was belief after belief after belief . But guess what happened ? Once I changed those . It was no longer a fight .
Once I started to see these beliefs for what they were , which was nothing more than just me prolonging an addiction to a drug , that once I got rid of the drug , all the beliefs disappeared . I might be getting a bit ahead of myself here , but once I started to see this , it was so easy , it was so obvious .
I was thinking how could I not have seen it this way ? All along it's been right in front of my eyes , but I kept lying to myself , staying in this cycle , and I couldn't face the truth . Stopping drinking is not hard . Think about it . All you need to do is you just don't do this Like . That is it . There's nothing else to it .
It's the simplest thing ever . Yet we overcomplicate the hell out of it . So how do you shift your beliefs ? Well , the first thing you need to do is you need to break them down . You need to think about all the beliefs .
One thing you can actually do is get a pen and paper and start writing down the beliefs that you have about alcohol , about stopping drinking and about addiction , and this might take time , it's not easy . But what do you believe to be true about alcohol ? What do you truly think that you gain from this drug ? And you write it down .
Alcohol , you know , I enjoy it with my wife at night . Oh , alcohol , I mean . After a really stressful day , I sometimes like to have a drink . And here's the thing Once you write down these beliefs , I could go line by line through every single one of those beliefs and tell you why they're wrong .
Every single reason why you think you drink is actually created by alcohol . Alcohol creates those beliefs . There was a time in your life , before you started drinking , where you had none of those beliefs . But if you think about every single one of those problems , you were able to deal with them without alcohol .
See , it's crept up on you , it's come out of nowhere and it's nothing more than an actual drug addiction . And I promise you one thing once you get rid of the drug , all the reasons why you thought you drink just completely disappear . It's not difficult .
Alcohol gives you absolutely nothing , and I'm sure if you've read stop drinking books and you know you've actually studied this you already know this . Now , one of the best ways to actually shift these beliefs is doing something that Elon Musk taught me years ago . Thanks for checking out the Stop Drinking Podcast by Sober Clear .
