One of the biggest complaints people make when they quit drinking alcohol is the feeling of being bored . What are they going to do with themselves now they've stopped drinking ? And this is especially important if you've used alcohol as a form of escapism . We end up having so much more free time and it can feel difficult to fill it all up with things to do .
Today , in this video , I'm going to show you how you can address this boredom after stopping drinking . This is what I did in my own life six years ago , and after I applied what I'm going to teach you in this video today , my life changed forever . I moved to Asia , I built an online business , soberclearcom , which is my coaching company .
I built this YouTube channel , I got in the best shape of my life , I got into another relationship , I've traveled the entire world , and this all happened after stopping drinking because I did what I'm going to teach you in this video today to not get bored .
So , whilst this is going to help you stop drinking , this video could take your life to the next level . So what I'm not going to do today is I'm not going to give you a bunch of generic things that you could do to just fill your time . I'm not going to tell you to read books or join a library or go volunteering .
No , we're going to address the root cause of the problem . Now , when you stop drinking alcohol , you will feel bored . Right , I'm not going to sit here and say that it's like I've got some miracle cure , because I don't . But the first thing that we all need to come to terms with is being bored is okay .
We don't need to pull out our phone , we don't need to scroll on social media . We don't need to take a drug or a drink to escape that feeling . And when we stop drinking alcohol , we need to come to terms with being okay , with being bored . We don't need 24-7 stimulus .
Now , all that happens when we stop drinking is it's exacerbated for a short period , but once you get used to it and you don't try and run from it , it becomes a lot easier . Now , in a second , I'm going to talk to you about addressing it in a way that you'll have never thought about before . But the first step is just being okay with it .
So what's the answer here ? What's the answer to fixing your boredom ? Well , we need to go in stages , and it starts at the top . We need a North Star . We need a vision for our life . Stopping drinking and then sitting around and watching Netflix and changing nothing about your life I mean no thanks , that's not for me . I'd rather keep drinking .
When I stopped drinking alcohol , everybody was telling me I should go to the past , I should see a therapist , I should go to meetings and make amendments to people and sit around talking about war stories and all the bad things that happened when I drank , and every time I did that , it made me want to drink more .
So when I stopped drinking six years ago , I didn't do any of that stuff . I'm not saying that it's a bad thing to do and you shouldn't do it . No , there's a time and a place . But I did the opposite . What I did is I focused on a future . I had a vision for my life where I was able to travel the world . I was able to do an online business .
I was able to make an impact on other people . I was able to get into much better shape , get into a relationship . I had all of these things that I wanted after stopping drinking and I wrote this down . I made vision boards . I was journaling about the life I wanted for myself , because after stopping drinking , I knew I could get it .
I knew I could work towards it , because I finally had a good relationship with myself where I could set a goal like stopping drinking , and then actually follow through . Then I started thinking , okay , well , what else could I do ? So if you're feeling bored , it's okay , but you need to start working on a vision for your life . This is like the first part .
Don't worry , we'll talk about specific details in a minute and how you can actually fill up your time . But none of that's going to make sense unless you've got an ideal for your life . How do you want your relationship to look , your family life to look , your health , your body ? What do you want to see reflected in the mirror ?
What about your lifestyle , your career ? Do you want to be the CEO of a massive business or do you want a lifestyle business where you've got a little coffee shop in the local area ? I don't know what it is , but I promise you , when you stop drinking alcohol , you can level your life up in ways that you didn't imagine .
So my recommendation is to picture yourself 10 years from now and imagine life was perfect in every way . You had the work that you wanted , the financial life that you wanted , your health was where you wanted it to be . And I want you to write down a day in the life for that version of you 10 years from now . Just imagine everything goes perfect .
Don't imagine limits . Don't think well , I can't do this , I can't do that . Just write it down . And then what we can do is we can start to work backwards . For example , I knew one day I wanted an online business , but when I was first starting my journey , I didn't have any skills .
I didn't know what I was going to do , so I had to strip it right back and think okay , well , in that first year , what could I do ? That's going to propel me in that direction , and I knew for me , I had to start freelancing . I had to learn skills , get mentors , invest money into myself and build Leon up .
I don't know what it is for you , maybe for your health , maybe you want a six pack and be running marathons and doing triathlons , doing CrossFit , whatever . But maybe right now all you can actually do is just manage to go for a walk . But once you've got that vision , break it down into this first year .
What could your target be for this year that starts putting your life in the direction that you want it to go ? Maybe it's hiring a trainer . Maybe for you it's starting a YouTube channel , I don't know . But once we've got an idea of the outcomes that we want , now we need to go down to the more granular level .
We need to start thinking of systems of habits , of inputs that we can do on a daily basis that will create that output . If getting in shape is important , maybe for you you need to be counting your calories every day , working with a personal trainer , following an exercise program and doing some sort of exercise every single day .
Maybe , if it's a business thing , you've got to be out talking to new clients , getting new business . What we want to do is get that vision , bring it down to one year and then bring it down to daily habits and things that we can execute . And then , once we've got this general idea , all that we need to do is plan our time .
The cure to boredom is making sure you've got a vision and knowing where things are going , looking at that , keeping it in your mind , having it maybe printed out on a piece of paper or something , and we need to see our days as steps towards that vision . And then what we need to do is plan our time .
I would recommend planning your day at nighttime before you go to bed and making sure that every hour is accounted for . And then I'm not saying that this is going to fix boredom totally .
You know there's boring days , like going to the gym might be boring for you , eating a salad instead of a burger might be boring , but that's totally okay , provided that you're going in the direction that you want to go in . And what might happen is the first few weeks when you're building new habits and changing your identity and how you view yourself .
The first few weeks might feel boring , but then you'll start seeing a couple of results . You might see your clothes feeling a bit looser , or you might get a new client , have some more money , and then life starts getting exciting .
