¶ Welcome to Starting Right
Good morning and welcome to Starting Right with Danny Mac . I'm going to be here every Monday to Friday to help you get a great five-minute start to your day , so grab your cup of coffee , sit back , relax and let me help you start your day right . I want to share with you an email that I received , called 10 things that my parents have taught me .
Now I need to make a disclaimer before I read this list , because this is not my list . You see , I know my mom listens to the podcast and if she hears this list and thinks that I'm talking about her and dad , I will be in big trouble . So this is not about my family , at least most of it Well , some of it .
But this list today is just meant for fun and it's meant to help us realize that there are some things that we say to our kids , or that our parents have said to us , that the logic is not really all that great , but we say it anyway , and the kids always know what we mean . So here we go .
My mother taught me to appreciate a job well done when she said if you're going to kill each other , do it outside . I just finished cleaning . My mother also taught me about religion when she told me you better pray , that will come out of the carpet . My father yeah well , he taught me about time travel .
He said if you don't straighten up , I'm going to knock you into the middle of next week . There were many times also that my father taught me logic when he said because I said so . That's why I learned mother's logic when she said if you fall out of that tree and break your neck , you're not coming to the store with me .
My mother also taught me to be prepared . She constantly reminded me make sure you wear clean underwear in case you get hit by a truck . My dad , he taught me irony . He would say keep crying and I'll give you something to cry about . My mother taught me science , the science of osmosis . She would say shut your mouth and eat your supper .
My mother also taught me what it meant to be a contortionist when she would tell me to look at that dirt on the back of your neck . And , mom , she also taught me about stamina when she said you will sit there until all that spinach is gone . Okay , so now , how many of those do you remember hearing when you were a kid ?
Or , worse yet , how many of those have you said to your own children ? This list was just compiled to say these are some goofy things that people say when they're trying to teach us something or make a point that we won't forget .
It's all part of that learning process when we're growing up , getting information coming at us in different ways , and sometimes it makes a lot of sense . Sometimes it doesn't make sense , but we generally get the meaning of what it's all about . As we look back over these last few years , we all recognize that we face many challenges and many changes .
What are some of the positive things that you have learned about yourself , about God , about your family , about where you're going with your lives ? Are there some things that God has shown you and taught you ? Maybe some of your learning has been on purpose . Maybe you've taken a course or courses , or maybe you've taught a course .
Maybe you completed your degree that had been sitting there unfinished for a number of years . But where are you learning and where are you growing ? God is always wanting us to grow and to learn . We need to learn what he has for us , where he's taking us , what he wants to do with our lives .
Hebrews , chapter 6 and verse 1 says Therefore , let us move beyond the elementary teachings of Christ and be taken forward to maturity . In Luke 17 and 5 , the apostles said to Jesus Increase our faith , help us to get more of what you're doing and help us to grow more and to know more . Teach us . God wants to teach us very specifically and succinctly .
He wants to pour into you . He wants you to understand more about Him and about His Word and about His plan for your life , about what strengths you have and how to use the gifts that he's placed within you . Do you know what gifts God has given you and how to use those gifts ?
He wants to keep us moving forward and growing , and the lessons of God are not hard to understand . He will teach us through His Word and through the time we spend in it , but he will also teach us as we're taking steps of faith to do what he wants us to do .
It's amazing what you learn when you decide that you are not going to stand still anymore , but you're going to start moving forward , and then God starts to teach us , and he will encourage us , not with goofy instructions , but with love and grace and mercy . Keep growing , keep learning .
Know that God wants to pour more and more into you and cause you to move ahead , and none of those things in that list are the way God will talk to you , so you don't have to worry about that . Have a great day , my friends . We'll talk again tomorrow .
Thank you for listening today and I invite you to join me Monday to Friday , right here on Starting Right with Danny Mac .
