Episode description

After years of grappling with chronic health issues that upended my daily life, I discovered a profound source of comfort and strength that changed everything. Join me, Johnny Mac, as I step in for Danny Mac on Starting Right to share a personal story that explores the trials of misdiagnoses, the weight of questioning one's worth in suffering, and the relief found in faith and scripture. This episode takes a close look at the story of Jesus and the blind man from the book of John, reminding us that our challenges are not punishments but part of life's unpredictable journey. Good morning . Welcome to Starting Right with Danny Mac . I'm Johnny Mac and I'll be filling in again today . I want to talk to you today about a young guy who was dealing with some pretty significant health issues Nothing terminal or anything , but he had some chronic issues that were , and still are affecting his ability to live a normal life .

Some chronic issues that were , and still are affecting his ability to live a normal life . He and his wife prayed , often just pleading with God for his healing , that he tried to do everything in their power to make him get better .

They even tried a surgery , which they were told would make everything better , but sadly it was based on a misdiagnosis and only resulted in making everything worse .

On the Sundays , when he was feeling well enough to go to church , he and his wife would often go up after the service and ask for prayer for his healing , and when they did , they would be asked about whether or not he was harboring secret sin in his heart . They were once told that the only pill this guy should need is the gospel .

Now I know the pastors of the church where this happened and I believe I can safely say that if they knew what was going on , they would be livid .

And I want to say to you right now if you or someone you care about is dealing with a chronic health issue or a major life issue and this story sounds familiar to you I am so very sorry that this has happened to you or them and it's to you that I want to give some encouragement this morning .

In the book of John , chapter 9 , we read the story of Jesus and the man who was born blind . The disciples , upon seeing the man , asked Jesus who sinned , the blind man or his parents ? And in response , jesus very clearly said neither this man nor his parents sinned .

Now , as nobody's obviously capable of living a perfect life other than Jesus Now , as nobody's obviously capable of living a perfect life other than Jesus , at some point we can safely assume that this man and his parents sinned , but what Jesus was saying is that this man's blindness was not a punishment for sin .

We can also look in 2 Corinthians 12 , verses 7-9 . There we read about Paul pleading with God to take away his thorn in his flesh . After he's pleaded three times , jesus responded my grace is sufficient for you , for my power is made perfect in weakness . He didn't bring up Paul's past . He didn't bring up the church that Paul had persecuted .

He said my grace is sufficient for you . Whatever it is you're facing , whether it's a chronic illness or a loved one not living for the Lord or whatever it is . I want you to know today that God is a God of love and forgiveness , that you are loved so very much .

We live in a fallen world and bad stuff happens , but that doesn't mean that you are being punished . God never promised calm seas , but he does promise to be with us in the storm .

Whatever that may be and , as I'm sure you've probably guessed , I am that young man , although I'm not so young anymore , I've been dealing with some pretty big chronic health issues for a little over the past decade . Life can be hard , but God is here and God is good . Oh , if there's anything I want you to leave you with , is that God is good . Thank you .

Please join us again tomorrow for another episode of Starting Right with Danny .
