¶ Suspicions and Khan's Evolving Perspective
If you have reservations, Ensign Tuvok, please speak freely. It is difficult, Captain. Although my acquaintance with Dr. Lear has been brief, I feel a certain... You feel? That's unusual, coming from a falcon. A poor choice of words. I apologize. I find Dr. Lear's perseverance impressive. It isn't her work ethic I question. It's her motives. She is an academic who is attempting to illuminate one of the darkest corners of our history.
And you find that admirable? I find it intriguing. There are questions she refuses to answer, but I am uncertain as to why. Are you refusing a direct order, Innocent? I am not. If you wish me to surveil Dr. Lear's movements and to review copies of her logs, both personal and project-related, I will do so. Thank you. May I ask, Captain?
What is it you fear? When I look at Khan, I don't see a mystery that needs to be solved. The problem with evil isn't that we don't understand it. It's that the practice of it... is incompatible with the peace and happiness of all other living things. If your happiness depends upon the suffering of others, if peaceful coexistence through painful compromise is an unacceptable outcome. There is simply no place for you in a civilized society. Dismissed, Ensign. Thank you, Captain.
Computer, play Beethoven's Führer Elisa. Personal log, Lieutenant Marla MacGyver's Day 208 of Exile. Khan was unusually quiet as we returned to camp after finding the caves the alien he calls Del Mondo showed him during their first telepathic conversation. He doesn't know what to make of this simple act of generosity.
Makes me wonder if anyone has ever given him anything and expected nothing in return. Of course, I can't be certain Delmanda and his people have no sinister motivations, but somehow I just... doubt it. Only one way to find out, of course. Continue communication. Khan held out for four days, waiting for Delmonda to come to him. I suggested as kindly as I could that he get over himself and extend an invitation. To my utter astonishment this morning, he did.
¶ Delmonda Reveals Elborian Culture and History
Delmonda, thank you for joining me. Enchanted to oblige. Your vocabulary is growing. Not exactly. It is your mind that translates my thoughts. The greater nuance and variety of words you comprehend is evidence that our bond grows stronger. May I ask, when you enter my mind to speak, Are all of my thoughts and feelings available to you like an open book? Elborian minds open to one another as easily as you breathe the air. But there are barriers. No, fortresses.
in your mind, that must be breached in order to accomplish openness. I would prefer for now that you leave my mental fortresses untouched. An understandable request. I've not seen your people near the shoreline and I'm not certain of your dietary needs, but we call these rainbow tails and find them to be quite delicious. These are potatoes. They're better with salt. And these are fresh yellow berries that grow on the edge of our camp's eastern border. Thank you. It's good, yes?
Oh, you're meant to eat around the bones. The skeletal calcium is an essential nutrient source. Interesting. And this is a newer addition to our pantry. a beverage we call vodka. My Lieutenant Ivan is particularly skilled in distilling it. In small amounts, vodka can function as a social lubricant. Clarity of thought is essential.
Group transcendental experiences aided by chemicals serve their purpose, but your vodka is a blunt instrument unsuited to that task. I apologize. I had no idea. And I've never trusted a man who wouldn't drink with me. For all things, there is a first time. The underground caverns you selected are perfect. We should be able to survive there for years, even with the inevitable changes to this planet's environment. We estimate five years.
And then what? Longer-term survival strategies will require additional data. We are working to restore certain components to ease information collection. Will you contact Elboria for help? Is that even possible? We will not. We were driven from our homeworld long ago and will never return. We hoped to build on our world a society where our actions were aligned with our highest values. Compassion.
service to others, tolerance of differing opinions, and above all, harmony of the pandem. What is a pandem? You have no word for it. It is a collection of minds bonded beyond convenience or aptitude. As Alborians naturally developed this ability, they found it led to a richer and more meaningful existence, but... Our society's leadership was fearful. So you left to seek a better world. One where you could live as you desired without interference. To live in proximity to those whose values are...
Not inferior, that is not the word. Less evolved, perhaps. Better, yes, less evolved. To be forced to constantly defend your beliefs by those who fear them because they choose ignorance is exhausting. It would have made our continued evolution impossible. Evolving to what end? Can you name the form you seek? Can you even sense it? Huh. I see. Just there.
crack in the wall. You too seek to evolve toward a more perfect state. My people were created to optimize humanity's greatest strengths. But those who created us... refused to accept that those strengths could guide them towards a better future. They wanted to use us as tools for their own petty ends. We too fled Earth and came here to build something better.
There is a tension in your mind when you speak of coming here that I associate with deception. Or omission. If I am in error, I apologize. If you are so curious, why not...
simply take the information you require from my mind. The difference between that which is taken and that which is freely given is significant, is it not? You're a puzzle. You possess great power, but... refuse to use it to secure the safety of your people as a leader how is this not your greatest priority i speak for the pandem but every voice is valuable our priority is consensus we have chosen this path
for the good of all. Here, the burden of choice rests with me alone. My people accept this. As long as your people continue to tend to their own, I am content that we should share this world. But if your pandem should change its mind... We will not. And you shall determine our ongoing proximity. You would defer to my judgment? Why? You would not do the same were our situations reversed?
You outnumber us. You've already demonstrated how formidable your mental weapons can be. Were I you, I would have killed all of us as soon as we attacked and taken those case for my own people. You think me barbaric. Do you not consider altruism a virtue? In my experience, altruism is the highest form of self-interest. Not always. Why do you allow fear so much fertile ground within your mind? How is this living? In order to live, one must survive.

¶ Khan's People: Fear, Distrust, and Plans
The larger pieces of the wreckage they move with their minds, usually in groups of ten or more. I believe they are moving into a cave system not far from our own. Perhaps even connected. I cannot follow them too closely. I have no idea yet how far their telepathy functions. Delmonda did say they were attempting to repair certain components. I assumed they were scanners similar to Mahler's. Why does it matter?
what he says. They cannot be trusted. Think, Ivan. Were it not for Del Mondo, we wouldn't even know this cave system existed. How is that not a gesture worthy of trust? Because the imbalance of power between us is unacceptable. We live for now because it serves their purpose. What happens when that is no longer true? Why is it so hard to believe that the Elborians are who they say they are? The only violence they did was to our weapons and only then in self-defense.
Since then, they have kept to themselves while providing us with a real chance to survive. I'm never going to get used to those. And neither is the baby. Every time the ground shakes, he pitches a fit. Are we sure it's actually safer down here? They could easily trap us here. Wait until we've all entered the caves and collapse the main entrance. So what ends?
Why bother when they could just as easily kill us with their minds right now? It feels like we're being corralled. Like cattle. There is much to fear, Ursula. But our fears cannot paralyze us. But I am certain that Delmonda is hiding something from me. And until I know what and why, we must remain on guard. I'm going to pick up their scent and follow them to wherever they're hiding.
I will find the truth, and then we will figure out how to kill them. Ivan. My lord. Take Hassan with you. And I want regular updates. Yes. That's another kilometer. Nineteen so far, Joachim. And no end in sight. Should we check the net again? Not yet, Erika. It was good of the... What are they called again?
The elves. It was good of them to show us this place. I wish they'd never come. Why? I didn't need to know that there are creatures in the universe that can bend metal with their minds. You see what they did to Khan's blade? It's bent, but it did not break. It could still be reforged. Khan is... was. Everything to my father. All-knowing. All-powerful. And just one of them brought him to his knees without even lifting a finger.
If Kana's not who I thought he was, then who am I now? You are... Yoakim. You are the best fisherman of us all. You are... The first human to chart the sunless sea. And... you are... my friend. The... day of the battle. When you kissed me? Would you like to try it again? We should check the net.
¶ Survival Efforts and Ivan's Violent Act
Without sea life to sustain us, we'll starve down here. It's not big enough. The next cave anywhere near this size is a mile deeper. And if you want a hydroelectric backup for the generator, you need to be less than 500 meters from the shore. It isn't even half the size of the lab. It'll fit two biobeds at the most. We'll separate the storage area from everything that needs power.
I should keep the medicines a hundred meters from the space where I treat patients. Well, not all of them, just that... Listen! Do you hear that? Wait, do it again? There's another cave back there. No idea how big until we open it up, but maybe your supplies don't have to leave down the hall. Come here, you two. You're welcome, my love. And you, my little one. Do you know how smart your mommy is?
When is that little fella gonna be cooked anyway? At least eight more weeks, which means we have seven weeks to get our lab fully powered up down here. What's his name gonna be? Well, we were thinking... Joaquin. But we haven't asked his son yet. So don't... It's really nice, actually. I don't mean a lot to him. So, who wants to punch through this wall with me, eh? I'll get the sledgehammer.
Hassan, I've lost sight of them. There's a cave entrance, a few hundred meters north. Why transport tons of metal into an enclosed space? Get out of my mind, you filth. Hungry? I said... Don't you? That was for my weapon. And that was for humiliating my lord on the field of battle. This and this and this. Watch for your mental powers. We will drive you from this world like the pathetic.
¶ Tragedy, Delmonda's Guidance, and Confrontation
Of course he's holding back. You are too. Learning to know and trust an entirely different species takes time. Perhaps if I'd attended your Starfleet school. He wouldn't have lasted a day at the Academy. Do you know what the four most terrifying words in the English language are? We come in peace. Fine, we'll change the subject. Jewel? No.
That was my mother's middle name. And I'm certain she wore it beautifully. What about Daisy? Too fragile. Eulalie? Now you're just tormenting me. Do you smell that? Sulfur. Over here. It's a natural hot spring. Take care, my love. Allow me. It's warm, but not too hot. We must be nearer to the surface here. I know we'll all be spending as much time as humanly possible as soon as we're settled in. I must go to them. Hurry. Just leave me the light. I'll find my way back.
We were trying to open a passage and it collapsed on Mado. Step aside. Mado! Move the others out of the way. Mado, we're coming! Get back! There she is. Mado! Mado! God, help me look her out. She's barely breathing. I can't treat her here. I'll carry her to Medbag. There's no time. Hide. There's no other choice, Ursula. Hurry. Note to self. No wandering through the caves in the future without breadcrumbs. Or my scanner. Be not afraid. Are you Delmonda? Yes. And you are... Lieutenant...
Lieutenant... Marla MacGyvers. Your bond with Kai is strong. I should hope so. He's my husband. Where are you? I am both near and far. I can guide you, if you are willing. Guide me where? To where your eye, then, is. I... Perhaps I should find Khan first. Communication is difficult where there is so much hostility. I understand. And I've yet to meet anyone who can talk sense into Ivan. Where do I go? Ivan is this way.

You think I would willingly bring another child into this? This mess? This epic disaster we are living? feed the mouths we have right now. And in a few more months, nothing else will grow here. Ever. Every living thing will die! So what's the point?
Why bother? My lord. What is it, Hassan? The elves. They've taken Ivan. I'll meet you at the gate. You can guide me from there.
¶ Unveiling Truths: Ivan's Actions and Elborian Vulnerability
Ursula, Mudo is still alive. She requires your care. Yes, Khan. What is all of this? Can you not tell? It looks a little like a forensic analysis of a crashed ship. Everything in pieces. It is a necessary first step. A first step toward what? Peace. Hope. Survival. Is this your new home? It suits our purposes for now, but will not suffice long term. What will that depends entirely upon your husband Ivan What have you done to him? It's like he's in a trance
He is visiting peaceful lands in his mind. It's hard to imagine that such a place exists. He was spying on us and came upon one of ours alone in the jungle. He killed Seconda in cold blood. Gods, no. I'm so sorry. Our strength comes from the Pandem. Together, we are formidable. Alone, we are vulnerable. Is that the truth you have been hiding from Khan?
One, yes. But not the only one. We stand upon a precipice a single misstep could damn both of our people to oblivion. I understand the risk you just took in sharing that information with me. And I thank you for your trust. Is this Ivan a fair representative of the rest of Khan's people? He is a child of war who has yet to realize that the battles are over. And he is driven by demons I can only imagine. He must be taught better. May I speak with him? If that is your wish.
Get away from her. I will kill every single one of you. Ivan, stop. They have poisoned your mind. Just as they poison Khans. But I know the truth. They can be killed. They must be killed. I forbid you to harm anyone else. You have no right. I am Khan's woman. I carry his child in my body to defy me. is to defy him this isn't over you traitor i cannot release him the risk to all is too great i know but what he knows khan will know soon enough
You said you believe I can be trusted. I have seen your mind. I know you can be trusted. You are not like the rest. Does it work both ways? May I also see yours?
¶ A Path Forward: The Ship and Dr. Lear's Source
If that is your wish, Lieutenant Marla McGyers. What have you done? There, Ivan. Why have you taken my Lieutenant Ivan prisoner? Marla? Gone. My love, are you hurt? What are you doing here? Elmodna called to me. And you simply went where he told you? Were you in her mind? This has to stop! Ivan was spying on them. I sent my men to watch you to make sure you were keeping up your end of our agreement. Did you order him to kill any Elborian he saw in sight? Because that's what he did. What?
How is that even possible? We are not invulnerable, Khan, but I assure you Ivan was not provoked. Hassan, is this true? I cannot say, my lord. Once he spotted the Elb, he shut off the radio. Can you prove that Ivan did this? Do you need to see the outline of his boot in Seconda's skull? No. No, I do not. But I cannot believe he would have attacked without cause.
Will you release him to my custody so I may punish him for this transgression? You are not the only one that Ivan has transgressed against. And you do not trust my judgment? Ivan has injured us both. Together, we will judge his actions and determine his fate. My people's fate rests in my hands alone. Thus it has always been, and thus it ever shall be. Then our path forward must diverge here. If that is your wish. No, please. Look around you, Khan. What do you see? Pieces of their ship.
Yes, we have determined that it will be possible to build a small craft from what remains. A small craft? To take your people off my world? No. We do not build this ship for ourselves. We are building it for you. What? I will never, as long as I live, Forget the look on Khan's face when Delmont told him. Come in. You wished to see me, Dr. Lear. Are you kidding me with this?
I am unaware- Mirroring my log entries? Tracking my movements on the ship? I'm here or in the mess hall, as I'm sure you know by now. How did you- Tuvok, I'm a historian. It's imperative that my research be secure and private. I have my own anti-tampering devices. I knew the moment you broke into my data.
Is it possible that the most devious and nefarious criminals in the Federation are our academics? I could tell you stories about thefts of intellectual property that would turn your hair white, but that's not the point right now. Why are you doing this to me? Captain Sulu asked me to keep track of your movements and your work. Fine, I'll take it up with him. You will not. Excuse me? Your work has aroused suspicion. I believe the Captain's concerns to be totally unfounded.
or rather grounded in his emotional response to anything related to Khan Noonien Singh, but confronting him will not allay them. Then what will? Is there anything you can tell me about this project? How you came to possess the original MacGyver's documents. Anything to help him understand your fascination with this man. He has no right. He has made it possible for you to do this work. He has some rights.
The choice is yours, Dr. Lear. But I cannot help you unless you are willing to trust me. I can't trust anyone. Would it make a difference for you to know that I believe your work to be important? And I would very much like to see it reach completion. My source, the individual who gave me the original logs, was named Delmonda. Delmonda? The Elborian? I believe so. So if your Delmonda is the same individual who crashed on Ceti Alpha 5 and promised to build Khan a ship, that suggests...
Don't get ahead of yourself. Until we know the rest of the story, assumptions are useless. Apologies. But at the very least, we now know that at some point, Delmonda escaped the planet.
