A reading from the book of Exodus. God spoke all these words to Moses on Mount Sinai. I am the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

You shall not bow down to them or worship them for I the Lord, your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the inequity of parents to the third and fourth generation of those who reject me. But showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord. Your God. For the Lord will not acquit.

Anyone who misuses his name, remember the Sabbath day and keep it Holy six days, you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord. Your God, you shall not do any work. You, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave your livestock or the alien resident in your town. For in six days, the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them, but rested the seventh.

Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and consecrated it honor your father and mother so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife or male or female slave or ox or donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor. The word of the Lord. Thanks.

Be to God.

The psalm today is Psalm 19. The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament shows his handiwork one day tells its tail to another. And one might one night in pots, knowledge to another, although they have no words, all language and their voices are not heard. Their sound has gone out into all the lands and the message to the ends of the world. In the deep, has he set a pavilion for the sun? It comes forth like a bride groom out of his chamber.

It rejoices like a champion to run its course. It goes forth from the other most edge of the heavens and runs about to the end of it. Again, nothing is hidden from its burning font. The law of the law of the Lord is perfect and revives the soul. The testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the innocent, the statutes of the Lord, adjust and rejoice. The heart, the commandment of the Lord is clear and it gives light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean and endures forever.

The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired. Are they than gold? More than much fine gold sweeter father and honey than honey in, in the comb by them also is your servant enlightened. And in keeping them there is great reward who can tell how often he offends, cleanse and leave from my secret faults above all. Keep your servant from presumptuous sin.

Let them not get dominion over me then shall I be whole and sound and innocent of great offense, but the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Oh Lord. My strength and my Redeemer,

Dr. Risica

A reading from Paul's first letter to the church in Corinth. The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God for it is written. I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and the discernment of the discerning. I will thwart. Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age?

Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world for, since in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom. God decided through foolishness of our proclamation to save those who believe for Jews demand signs and Greeks desire, wisdom. But we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. But to those who are called both Jews and Greeks Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God for God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom.

And God's weakness is stronger than human strength. The word of the Lord. Thanks. Be to God.

Fr. Craig Swan

Our gospel him is hymn 455. The love of God, how strong and true. The Holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to John glory, be to thee Lord Christ the Passover of the Jews was near. And Jesus went up to Jerusalem in the temple. He found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changed. He was seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords. He drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle.

He also poured out the coins, the money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, take these things out of here. Stop making my father's house, a marketplace. His disciples remembered that it was written. Zeal for your house will consume me. The Jews then said to him, what sign can you show us for doing this? Jesus answered them, destroy this temple. And in three days I will raise it up.

The Jews then said, this temple has been under construction for 46 years. And will you raise it up in three days, but he was speaking of the temple of his body after he was raised from the dead, his disciples. Remember that he had said this and they believe the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken the gospel of the Lord praise be to the Oh, Christ. in the name of God, father, son, and Holy spirit. Amen. This morning's gospel is one that often confounds and confuses. Many of us.

We so often think of Jesus as this meek and mild person who is filled in love and never had a harsh word for anybody. And that was the case of my father until 20 years ago, when he finally decided to take his first Bible study. And during that time they studied this same gospel. And I can't ever forget when he called me with his astonishment to say, Craig, I always thought of Jesus as kind of this. Nice friendly kind of guy, but I'm beginning to realize there was another side to him.

I remember laughing to myself because there are many times I tried to explain this to my father and he just couldn't seem to comprehend it, but there was another side to Jesus. There was a side to Jesus that became frustrated with the temple authorities. And where the faith of the Jewish people had gone to over the centuries no longer were the laws that we heard. So wonderfully earlier today use as a pathway to find a relationship with God.

But we're now being used by the Pharisees as a way to control. And to strong arm, the Jews into obedience. It was a way to pass judgment on those who could not live up to the law and the temple itself. A building originally started 40 years before this date in Jesus' life. Was begun by King Harrot, as one of many building projects that King Herod started throughout Israel, they were built as great in mighty monuments to his memory. And here Jesus enters the temple.

What is the most Holy of Holy places in all Jerusalem and perhaps even in the world. The place where ancient tradition told us that God resided within the confines of the most inner most part of the temple, but what does he find there? Does he find people who are being led towards deeper relationship to God, or instead is he finding that.

The temple is no different than the marketplaces, which encompass much of the streets of the old city, a place where commerce was taking place and not a sense of teaching of who God is and a welcoming to all into the inner sanctum and into the joys and love of God.

In that little angle, the late Madeline Lango writes that the difference between an icon and an idol is that an icon is designed for us to be able to see God as if looking through a glass and idol blocks us from being able to see God and what we find in this morning's gospel. And in our old Testament, readings are. What were at one time meant to be icons, buildings and laws meant to help us see God and be in relationship with God more easily.

But instead over time had been turned into idols and they themselves became items of worship in Paul's letter this morning. We T we hear him say that the cross. Is foolishness to most of the world that which people value and worship, whether it be power or wealth or wisdom as the Greeks did are not what is taught to be valued in Christianity. But somehow what is valued is what the cross itself symbolizes humility, compassion, and uniqueness.

If we listen to the stories of Jesus, what confounded the people most often is that his command to them to let go of what they believe, provided them security and identity, and to grab on tightly to the message of the cross, to the young rich man who seeks deeper relationship. He sends him away sadden because he tells them to find God fully, give up all that you have a command that he just could not bear to do. And for those who heard the beatitude, he speaks and teaches about a life in a way.

That is counter to our understanding of the world itself. That it is the lowly who shall inherit the earth. It is those who mourn, who shall be comforted. It is those who hunger and thirst for justice, who will be fad. Jesus has offered a gift to the world, to the cross. That most did not understand whose own idols block them from seeing the very incarnate God in front of them.

But as through the cross, the icon of our faith that Jesus demonstrated and showed us with the love of God truly is about. And how valuable it is and how badly needed it is by this world in these 40 days of lent, as we journey with Christ to Jerusalem. And then finally to the cross itself, allow ourselves to gaze upon the love of the act of Christ's sacrifice for us as the icon to understanding. All that is valuable and all that is pure from God.

As we look away from that, which blocks us from fully seeing God himself, all the elements of this world, whether it be the temple and its glory, the commandments, or even liturgy or building, maybe we focus through on the true icon, the cross of Christ. Amen. let us affirm our faith with the words of the Nicene creed. I believe in one God, the father almighty maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord, Jesus Christ.

The only begotten son of God, be God and of his father before all worlds, God of God, light of light. Very God, a very God begotten not made. Being of one substance with the father, by whom all things were made, who for us men and our, and for our salvation, he came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy ghost of the Virgin Mary and was made man and was crucified also for us under punches pilot, he suffered death and was buried.

And the third day he Rose again, according to the scriptures, he ascended into heaven. And sitteth on the right hand of the father. He shall come again with glory to judge, but the quick and the dead whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy ghost, the Lord, the giver of life who proceeded from the father and the son who with the father and the son together is worshiped and glorified who has spoken by the prophets.

And I believe in one Holy Catholic and apostolic church, I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Oh man,
