Today on Spikes Car Radio, we have two, count them, two BMW M5 Tourings. A green one. And a blue one. And we're going to tell you what we think of them. I think they suck. Yeah. All right, welcome to Spikes Car Radio. As I said earlier, we have two BMW M5 Tourings. Two, count them, two. We're both going to do dueling reviews. I'm very excited to talk to you about this because this car is bewildering. And we won't get into it. We won't get into it.
get into it now but did bmw remember how porsche gave us the 911 gts's together the opposite this is the opposite we had to fight so motor trend we're doing a video on This car and the Audi RS6. And BMW, for whatever reason, I wasn't involved. I'm a freelancer now. They didn't want to give us the car. We had to fight for it. Right, right. You...
texted me and said, like, basically, like, I don't, you said I'm perplexed by this car. Yeah. But we'll get into that. Yeah, yeah. But I hadn't driven it at all. And I had the upper, I went down to pick up the car. I could take that or the Audi. And I'm like, I should.
Drive it so I know what Spike's talking about. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I've driven it. We'll get into it. I've been driving it all week and I have a lot to say about it. But before we get there, I was on a fashion photo shoot today, Zuckerman. Checks out. Yeah. I know. It makes no sense. The magazine is Nobleman Magazine. They're a premier American men's ultra luxury magazine uniquely crafted for the modern gentleman. I went to their site and there was...
Robert De Niro, Jim Carrey, and our friend James Marston. All noble men. All noble men. And they were asking me to become part of the noble man crew. He's a noble man. I am now. We're an ignoble man. Yes. I think I'm the same way.
But Rod took some amazing pictures. It's really amazing with someone. He came in here and the first thing they did, Zuckerman, was they looked at your Jaguar and they went, we have to shoot with that car. It's the most photogenic car in here. That's true. And, you know, a very. original opinion good yeah well you know here's out you know i was not excited about getting my picture taken like i think many of us are not excited and then when they said when they said men's fashion
I went, oh, you know, there's nothing fashionable about me. I'm barely a man. Right. That's true. Right. Well, we're going to shoot with cars. So I'm excited about that. So we took a couple pictures and Rod said, hey, check this out. I could not believe what this guy can do with a camera, Zuckerman. I couldn't believe it. I looked human. Really? And the cars, you know when you just shoot a car with a great camera? Right. And it just looks that much better.
You get the angle. You get the angle, right. His shots, and I can't show them right now, but there'll be an upcoming issue. It's a thing on us, by the way. It's about us. I'm glad we're not here. It's about us. You would have had a hard time.
the man should we should have you in a kilt or with a codpiece and a crown maybe we can do that somebody somebody was snapping some pictures we shot here here's me in the zagato that's on on my street there uh very fashionable well look yeah man come on show us another picture there look at yeah look now again this is an iphone picture this is not one but look at how beautiful that car looks go to the one in the you know there's one at the airport just show the
The one without me in it. Look at this, Zuckerman. I shot that shot. This is just a little appetizer for just... how amazing these cars are going to look. We shot the ST. We shot the Zagato. We shot your Jaguar. And I think that was it. Is that our car? Which one? The ST? Yeah. Yeah, I haven't seen it in months. I didn't know it was in the hangar either. And your yellow car was missing, by the way, and I don't know where that went. Whenever it comes back, I'm fine. Wow.
He sends me his yellow SC. What is that? Super 90 GT. Oh, right. He says, store that in here. I go in there and I'm like, oh, this is great yellow car. It was gone. So somebody has, I think Jerry has it. Gianni. Gianni. Gianni has it. Anyway, that's pretty exciting. Also on today's show, you know, we talked last week about the 963 RSP. and uh porsche street legal leman hyper car road car and there were a lot of opinions where did my phone go
I wanted to read. There was a lot of negative feedback directed at me and I'd like to read some. It was good. It was solid. I missed it. No, there was a ton and it was all really. Is it about the cup holder? When I was putting the show together about the cup holder, I went, am I prattling on too long about this? And you guys knew it. You saw it.
And then I went to the editor. It's fine. Just let it go. You know, people like it when the show's on. Well, apparently they did not. They did not. I love the show. I've never missed an episode. But the coffee cup part was so irritating. Spike, do some research before questioning a journalist. Wow. That's someone sticking up for you, John. Finally. Sonic Death Monkey said, good grief, Spike. Get over the goddamn cup holder and do a show. You're right.
It was too long. I made a mistake there. Let's see. A lot of folks talking about trashing the electric G-Wagon, which I didn't care for. I mean, they should drive it. It's really good. Cup holder jokes, cup holder jokes, Fisker sucks. Yes, we know. Mitsubishi sucks. Wait, there's a good, I won't, I'll skip the Trashing Johnny comments.
You're a perfect kind of person for a podcast because people either love you or they hate you. Polarizing. Polarizing, which we like. I have some really good anti-Semitic comments I got. I can read those. I try to delete those. Oh, no, no, please. I like those. These you'd really like. But listen up. So this guy, Rich Archambau, messages me. He's a Concord judge for PCA Northeast Chapter. Represent. Whatever that means. He writes this. Look.
And this is the only nice message I got. The only nice comment. So I'm reading it. Okay. And keep in mind, there were 50 negative comments directed at me. And then this one nice one. Spike, I agree with your take on the 963 RSP. If you look at what Aston Martin did with the Vulcan. 24 were produced and one became a road car version. Then the Valkyrie was produced with a total of 275 road cars between Coupe, Spiders, and Pro Series.
And they were production hypercars. Then he goes on. Entering F1 in 2026. My guess, and it's his guess, is Porsche might be right behind, so maybe there is an application to be considered. They were offered to take over Sauber in 2025, but opted out. They may be producing a version of the 963 as a Le Mans car with a homologation.
for a road car. Boy, that's a lot. That's why I do not hang out at PCA. This was the Northeast chapter. Not national. This is North. Oh boy, just passing out. Well, look. We also have journalist Henry Ketchpole who's coming on. Ketchpole? Oh, yeah. Don't you know him? Yeah, he's a buddy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's fantastic. He's Zooming in from London and he just drove the car. He did. He's the only one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's one of four.
That drove it. But we have an exclusive. Who are the other three? You're looking at him, buddy. We all drove it up here. Oh, just a catch pole. Yeah, yeah. But he actually drove the car. You know, there's that moment where he pushes the button and he starts it and then it roars to life. He's going to come on and tell us what he thought of it.
Answer some questions about the cup holder. Nice. Did he drive the 917? I think he drove the 917 as well, right? These are all great questions. But I've driven a 917. No, I want to know how he fit because he's about 6'4". That's right. with that great sidebar yeah i don't know you've sat in that car too at 917 right i don't remember it being too it's not like a 910 or a 906 i i sat in 917 and like if i had a helmet on i couldn't get the door shut it was really tight
Yeah. We witnessed Jerry and another guy jam him. So two guys in the 917. We did? Yeah. stereo got in the car with jerry and they went with the fake the plastic seat that wasn't attached to the floor right yeah that was safe yes no seatbelts at 917 is just a very safe vehicle yeah yeah It's an amazing car. Oh, sure. When I sat in it, and where did I drive it? Vegas, maybe? You're just thinking about, all right, don't blow the engine with a misshift. If you downshift from four to one.
That's it. The engine's going to explode. The car could explode just on its own by itself. Your knees are pretty much in front of the axle. So if you stuff it into a wall, you might, you know, lose your legs. Let me ask you a question. Because you were one of the few people on earth who know the answer to it. I had the opportunity to drive either a 959 on a track or a 917. But with the caveat that in the 917, I would have had to have a helmet. And when I got in the car...
The only way we got the door shut was actually this way. And I said, you know what? I've always loved the 959. I cared about that when I was a kid. 1917's cool, but did I make the right decision? No. No. No, you did not. All right. And your head's already kind of like this. Good point. Having driven both cars, the 959 was a little bit of a letdown for me when I drove it. Just the suspension? No, only that.
And modern supercars were so much better, and this was such a primitive version of one. And I was on PCH, and I wasn't really at speed or anything. And it was cool, don't get me wrong, but it just... There were so many more new cars that do what it does better. So it's an interesting study in the beginning of a supercar, but not really, for me, a great destination.
So I was on Sonoma Raceway, whatever they call it, Sears Point, and I was following Pat Long around. And so he was going for it. So I got to really push the thing. And it was fun. I had a really good time. The 917 is one of those experiences you don't forget. Yeah.
Because of everything you just said. And I drove it with a helmet. I had to have a helmet and a racing suit on. But it's the danger. It's the sound. It's actually pretty easy to drive, you know. But it's the sound and when you know what you're doing. Like Steve McQueen sat in this seat. Yikes. The one I was in was not Steve McQueen's, but I enjoyed the 95.9. Okay, good answer. So anyway, we'll find out where this, whether or not.
You know, here's another thing. Let me just, I want to get into the motive of Cupgate because I think. Cupgate. I have a comment about Cupgate that I really like. What's that? It's not nice to you. Well, no, there were many, but go ahead. How do you manage not to punch Spike when he goes on about things like the cup holder? He often comes across as an utter twunt, but that was next level stuff. Yes. Yes. They're not wrong. See you at Pebble? Look.
They're not wrong. All right. I know I made a mistake there and I'm going to freely admit it to you guys. However, let me tell you what's driving it a little bit. It's frustration. And I think you know about what I'm going to say, Zuckerman, is where is this halo car? Where is this Porsche hyper car? We were all geared up to hear some sort of announcement. Then we find out it's just a one off. But it's late. And by the way, what are your theories on this, guys?
We thought it was going to be announced last year at Pebble, if you recall. I mean, if we go back, Carrera GT is what? 2003, 2004? Yeah. And 1918 was 14. 1914, right. We're late. We're late. We're 15. I mean, they're on. Like, I mean.
They don't really have a schedule they have to stick to. Do you remember when they announced the 918? Did they announce it a year or two ahead of time? They announced it like months ahead of time. That was one of the quickest developed thing ever. The Carrera GT was the same thing, right? It was the Paris Auto Show.
I don't remember. But it just came out, and it was a surprise. So they could. Maybe they do surprise us at Pebble. Maybe, but they've got it clamped down pretty tight. We haven't heard anything. Look, I heard it was going to be the Model X, and then basically... saying, hey, give us millions of dollars for an all-electric vehicle and everyone who has millions of dollars to spend. Mission X. Mission X, sorry. They said, no, thank you.
They said, I'm just not interested. That's what I think, that there's been a delay because of that misfire. And they said, all right, back to the drawing board. And I don't know. But I don't know. I don't know anything. They're very tight-lipped. I don't know anything. Put that on, assume so.
There you go. I don't know. You said it. I liked it. It was a good line. Thank you. Let's talk about our friends at Raystack. It's summertime. Are you opening up that garage? Are you looking at your crappy garage with your MR2 in there? Guess what we're going to do? We're going to help you out with some race deck. Look at that floor right there. Self-graining. Self-graining like Zuckerman. That's right. Get you decked up. You know what? In this photo shoot for Nobleman Magazine.
They shot my floor. The fashion shoot. We were supposed to shoot in the aisle of the airport. And we opened up the hangar door and he goes, boy, it looks great in here. This floor is great. And I went, wow, race deck.
there's your ad there you go and we shot the uh st we took the cover off we put the covers on everything else the st on the race deck guarantee you those are going to be the hero shots noblemen prefer race deck noble men why ultra luxury how do look at the three of us what do we have to do with those words we're ultra slobs it's like dubai though like five-star hotel
Seven stars. No, if you look at the Marsden photo shoot for Nobleman, he's all duded up in vests and fancy man suits and all sorts of things. And you go, all right, he belongs there. Marsden belongs there. He's the prettiest person I've ever seen. Let's put him in three-piece suits. Me? Yeah, yeah, you. I cleaned up. There must have been a deal with the devil to get me in there, but that's okay. We'll take it because we want to spread the word about Spike's car radio. Anyway, you know we love...
Racetech. They manufacture 24-7. They're made in the U.S. You can shop at Racetech.com and use code SPIKE911 for an exclusive 15% off and free shipping and make your garage. This is the time of year. Make your garage look great. You'll be happy.
I'm having a good experience. Zuckerman is having a good experience. And the wife and I are very close to calling the junk hauler to take everything out of our garage. So I'll actually have a floor. The second the junk is gone. What are you going to do? Race deck.
What kind? Zuckerman head. Oh, good. They'll do that. I know. Will they? Yeah, they will. They said they were going to make that. Oh, I'm doing Zuckerman head. In fact, it might even be made. Remember that delivery of race deck that came? I haven't opened it up yet, but I'm pretty sure they said there's something very special in there. Yeah. Really? Yeah.
You didn't want to put it here. You didn't tell me. The landlord said you couldn't put it here. I don't know. You didn't tell me that there was something special, that it was my head. I think it's your head. I'm going to park. What if I ever get my Porsche back? Park my Porsche right? Does that look right? On your head? No, it doesn't.
Everything's wrong, particularly with leaky cars. Are you like Mike Tyson? You want to have that in your house, a picture of you? Yes. With a tiger. What about the picture I sent you this morning?
That was our friend that was at the Porsche of Santa Clarita. He zooms in on the Porsche. There's a picture of my head and Zuckerman's sticker on the front windshield. Perfect. It was really funny. I'll send it to you, Cameron. Anyways, we got to talk about these M5. So let's get the cameras over there. The BMW M5 Touring, high performance. What do we call this? A station wagon? An estate vehicle? Call it a station wagon. In America, it's a station wagon. The Brits call it an estate.
Germans just can't think of anything other than like touring, shooting break. They use all the wrong terms, but it's a station wagon. It's pretty, you know, based on how the world has been reacting to me driving this car, which is pretty big, especially teenagers, kids in their 20s are flipping out.
The fact that we have two of them here is monumental, right? Are these cars here in the US yet? Yeah. They're just going on sale, I believe. And I had the same thing. I had more people stop and just come over and be like,
Tell me about it. Right. Like many. Let's talk about specs. 4.4 liter V8 engine with electric motor because it's a plug-in hybrid. I don't think you can charge it by driving it, right? There is a way. There's like energy mode or something, but if you go into the M. I tried to find. it m hybrid menu it's the bottom selection e-commerce or something 717 horsepower 063.2 seconds and uh a dedicated electric driving range of 25 miles uh
Mine was about 130, I think, right? Sticker. Mine's 140. 140? Yeah, on the nose, pretty much. And what else can we say stat-wise about it before we get into our opinions about it? Weighs 5,200 pounds. That's something. that we can talk about right now. So this car has, I've had it, I think for six days now, and I have been so confused in it from the beginning to end.
I saw it. I thought, I'm really going to like this. It's a dad mobile. I've got dad lifestyle things to do. But the second I got in it, the very first thing I observed was it doesn't feel like it looks. Does that make sense? Like you look at it and you go, all right, this is a really fast little estate wagon. And then you get in it and you go, I don't know what I'm in anymore. The shape is it's very wide. It's very long and it's very heavy. Right? I misspoke. It's 5,400 and...
54, 56 pounds. Two and a half tons. I've heard it kind of gamed out in grand pianos. It's seven and a half grand pianos. But the long and the short of it is it's too heavy. What's interesting about it... For me is, I've never really connected with this car. I still haven't quite yet. But like you said, every word that I took it, people loved it and got excited about it. And, you know, someone pulled up next to me on San Vicente in Brentwood.
Hey, Spike, is that the new M5 Touring? And he goes, yes. How do you like it? And before I could say anything, he goes, that's my dream car. I'm getting one in a month. And I said, okay, well. Enjoy it. Enjoy. It's going to be great. Cameron has a funny picture when I was there at the tennis court. I don't know if you can throw it up. Check this picture out. Ingram can put it in. This is three kids, high school students, who went down the long driveway, saw the car, and came racing back.
went oh my god yeah the new m5 touring yeah how is it yeah could not have cared that it wasn't my favorite car and said this is their dream car really they said can we sit in it And I said, sure. These are kids. Like I knew, I knew two of them. I had seen them high school grads, but they were just like. Tongues out, freaking out. My son James really likes it. He was freaking out. Inside Jack, I don't know if you can open the door and show everybody what happens. It's...
Many, many computer screens. Mission control idea of technology. The blue one's open, but lots of leather. Lots of orange leather. Yeah, yeah. Look, as much as I love BMW, I found there were too many modes in this. There was too much tech in it. Right. There were issues with physics of the car. and the way the computer systems kind of handled those ideas. And then...
You know, moments where I really enjoyed it, you know, but it but it's kind of a mixed bag for me, you know, and I was excited to ask you about it. I immediately went and just started watching everybody's videos. Doug DeMuro, you know, the Top Gear. Just anybody who had reviewed it. I think it was Throttle House, guys. And I could tell people felt a little like I did, which is I know I should like this. And I'm excited.
excited about it, but I can't quite connect to it. Did you have that experience? So, no, but I had a different experience. But two things. One, I picked it up in El Segundo and drove it back, and it's a normal luxury car. on the road right for in fact for a fast modern bmw it's very softly sprung
I've driven. And it's very fast. Yeah. That goes without saying, but I've driven countless like X4Ms, X5Ms, X6Ms, and they're brutal. The ride quality is brutal. Right. This is the opposite. This is very subtle, supple, and it just rides really well.
the next morning I took it up Angelus Crest because it's an M5 and push it. My opinion of those cars is if they had said this is the new m7 touring right we'd all be doing backflips there you go everybody would just do a fucking backflip i knew that's exactly right we've been waiting our whole lives for an m7 we've been waiting for bmw to bring a fast wagon he's having a moment he this is your twilight zone moment this could be his first brilliant moment on the show you're exactly right
And that explains it. That explains it. There's a lot of baggage tied to the M5 name. And again, like it's never going to be an E28. It's just that ship is sailed. No one makes cars like that anymore. But this thing. It's so silent inside. I was over 100 miles an hour, and I'm like, oh, the back of the seat's creaking as I'm being moved around. The brakes are incredible for as much as it weighs. oh my god it stops giant carbon ceramic brakes
The handling's incredible. The steering, like BMW used to have like the variable rate racks, which always drove me crazy. And the weighting would change based on how you're driving. Oh, I like that. Linear, direct steering. The rack, it's great. So it's an absolute. Absolutely fantastic car. And again, if you go back like, okay, the last M5, the other thing I'd say is the last M5 came out and it was okay. And then the M5 competition came out and it was like too much.
If it wasn't on a racetrack, it kind of sucked. It was great on a racetrack. Then the M5 CS came out. And that's the holy grail of four-door performance machines. That's it. The best ever. Well, this is just the first M5. So we're going to have a competition. We're going to have a...
I think they're going to get great. I think this one is they really erred on the side of luxury. And they're like, hey, we're making a station wagon. People are going to haul their kids around in it. We don't need it to like. Beat them up. We don't need it to be super shouty and loud. That's the competition. That's the eventual CS. They'll lighten it.
I would say I hate plug-in hybrids as a category. They're just stupid. Why do I want to go 25 miles all electric? I've driven the Electric 5 Series, the Electric 7 Series. They're brilliant. They're better than the gas cars. They're faster than the gas cars. Just make it. Make two. One with a V.
V8 makes a lot of horsepower. Another one with an electric motor only that makes even more horsepower. Give people a choice. Problem solved. V8 one will be nice and light. The electric one will be heavier but faster. It's great.
I'll disagree with you with the plug-in hybrid. This car doesn't need it because it's not all that loud to drive out of your neighborhood. But I love using electric to come out of my neighborhood. He argued his way into heaven. For his whole life, he's going to go to hell. And then he gives a brilliant summation of this car. He breaks it down and they say, okay. Yeah.
All is forgiven. Keep the camera still, Jack. All is forgiven. Yes. All is forgiven. He brilliant. One thing, Jack, put the car back on the shifter in the console inside. Johnny, did you? have this experience and i wasn't going to talk about it but it happened five times all right i reach for my iphone on that left side of that charger and my arm hits the shifter and puts the car in neutral
No. Five times I went like this. It was just a design issue just because of the proximity of that shifter. But I go to go at a light because I had reached for my phone and I'm in neutral. I think I'm about a foot wider than you. So I had a different but similar problem. And that is the iDrive dial. Yes. You can write on it. So if you want to do character input for Asian languages, right? So I would go to move it and I'd like accidentally.
go over it or maybe grab my phone and then something would change without me wanting it to. Right. And that happened about five dozen times. Yeah. But look, you know, I think you're right. This should be the BMW M7. It's the M7. The greatest car ever made. It's the greatest car ever made. You're going to love it. If you're an aftermarket BMW guy, start making M7 badges. Right. And touring badges, and you've got a great car. Yeah.
We noticed we were getting a little carsick in it just because of the longitudinal weird movements of its length and weight. It was school bussy in its execution. It's soft. I wouldn't say that this is a comfortable, soft car. It feels like a soft suspension. suspension car with noisy tires. And again, like I thought, well, I'm in a bad mood or something's wrong with me. I'll eventually kind of co- What's that?
All true. All true. But eventually, day two, day three, I'll like this car. I didn't cotton to it. Have you taken a canyon run in it? No, I don't want to. It's too long and too heavy. You should. It's just not right. It'll surprise you with how capable it is. No, look. So, look. One thumbs up. One. Medium for me. Cisco. Ebert. Let's talk about Sonic Power, gentlemen. Yes. Let's.
Guess what? Sonic Power just checked in on Amazon. That's right. Sonic Power, the gadget superheroes of your grimy kitchen, your crumb covered couch, your mystery goo bathroom. Now just a click away. So go to Amazon and boom, you're cleaning like a wizard. because with Sonic Power on Amazon, the only thing easier is than cleaning is buying their products while laying on the couch. Get off the couch, you bums. If you see Sonic Power, oh, look, there they are. I have that electric spin scrubber.
That's the one that I was using in the shower. Remember, Zuckerman? You made fun of me that I like to clean my own shower. I got to get one of these car vacuums. Search Sonic Power on Amazon or scan the QR code if you're watching this on YouTube and thank us later. I'm actually... considering firing my cleaning service because of Sonic Power. Thank you, Sonic Power. They can write anything and I read it. Yeah.
She's crying. You're cleaning ladies listening. Sonic Power, Sonic Power, Sonic Power. Go buy Sonic Power cleaning gadgets on Amazon now. Check them out. I like that ad, Sonic Power. That's a good one. I enjoy that. The cleaning force crying. No, I like that they're putting in little phrases that I have to read that aren't true about my life. Right. They're fighting back. Sonic power is fighting back. And I like that.
What else do we have to talk about here? Oh, this was a story that I caught. Oh, yeah. We've got Henry Catchpole coming up in a second to talk about him driving the 963 RSP, which I'm super excited about. We're going to be at the Pebble Beach Concord. There are a couple of tickets left. We've been selling tickets like crazy, Zuckerman. Look at this. And I didn't get to it. Zoom in on the photo. Why do you look funny in the upper right? Hold on.
First of all, it looks like I'm wearing comedy glasses and a fake nose right there. That's a very fake nose. Novelty nose. That's Zuckerman's high school graduation picture. That's how we look there. Stephen Miller's copy. Why does Matt get a recent photo? Matt.
I think because he's the only one who cared, who said, hey, I want to put in a better photo. Yeah. We should get worse photos. But it looks like he's leaning into his own chair going, hey. That's weird. That's in his office. Where is this picture of you? Me? Yeah, that's...
What's that from? A couple years ago. I guess that's pretty representative. Yeah. I mean, I had long hair. I cut my hair off. And the shot of Jerry is like, why am I in this shot with these idiots? I am. I'm not authorizing this. That's unauthorized, Jerry. I don't even ask him anymore. But I love how it's like Lieberman and Jerry Seinfeld. It's like, you know, puppet show and Spinal Tap. Well, that's in movie credits, the and, the ampersand, the and is more.
very important. So he's, he gets separation from all of you and is a big deal. This guy. And he, by the way, he's the only guy who can show up or not show up. We just won't know until the last minute. I'm going to try that. I heard he'd reserved a room and he's going there. And it shouldn't matter, everybody.
because all of the tickets, money goes to charity. Right. It all goes to charity. So come and see us. You have a good time every year. Last year, he did miss out the year before he was there. I get the feeling he's going to be here this year and that'll be some fun too. But should he not be, there's some other folks right behind him who I will not mention that we're working on. We're also going to be Audrain Concord, which is? October.
And where's that? Rhode Island? Newport, Rhode Island. Yeah. This is the first time. Do they have non-stops in Newport? What? Do we have to, like, go to New York and change planes? Yeah, there's no airports in Rhode Island. You think the plane's actually going to make it there, Zuckerman? Have you seen what's going on out there? This is it. This is it.
It's our last chance. They're going to fly you Air India through Newark. I've been seen 11A like that guy. The 11A dude. 11A dude who switched seats. Did he? He switched to 11A. He said, I'd rather sit there. Think about that. Wow. Yeah. Okay, this guy's got a money-making future. He could just sit anywhere. You could just rent the convention room and say, you can come in and touch this guy.
A thousand bucks to touch 11A. We spray paint him gold. Yes. Put him on a chair. We charge people to touch him. Yes. For good luck. That's a good. Yeah. All right. Let's do that. Thousand bucks a touch 11-8 Also Retro Automobile is up Can you click that link for Retro Auto so folks can see what this thing is? This is next year, but I'm super excited about it. Can we get to go? I sent you a link. Oh, yeah, it's this. You're right. You're right. It's usually in Paris, right? Always in Paris.
This show has always flipped me out with how beautiful it is. Can we get a ticket? Can we get flown there? Johnny's going to answer that question. Oh, have you made any progress? I don't know if it's public knowledge. People are, they're asking us to come here too. This is going to be the first New York show. This would be okay. Like the Beatles, but in reverse. We're going and taking over the continent. You were so good at... Johnny will attest I'm not.
You should handle all of our negotiations. You'll get us more money. My negotiations are adversarial. This is a friendly negotiation. So give us a little whiff of what you would say to the retro auto folks. We know they're French. They know they're French. You're going to fly us private. You're going to give us a bunch of money and you're going to like it. sounds good to me yeah that's basically what I told him
Yeah. That's not bad. But in 26, they're going to do a New York retromobile. Yeah, that's the show we're talking about here. Yeah. It's not bad. We need to go to New York. That's like sand at the beach. They need more Zuckermans. Look what they have.
But they always have the greatest cars from around the world and the greatest car parts and just the greatest stuff. Go down. Oh, that shot up in the upper left there. It's just the signage. This show flips me out. It's so good. We need to bring out.
him in ferris stand so come in all right hold up ferrari that white one cam very bottom second picture on the left yeah yeah td look at that it's a good show so you may see us there too And before we bring Henry out all the way from London, there's one last story that a lot of our viewers sent me because they know you would like it, Zuckerman.
It's that Florida story there, Cameron. You can throw it up here. Florida retiree pleads not guilty after urinating on $10,500 of canned meat. Yes. Patrick Francis Mitchell allegedly contaminated 188 bulk. units of Vienna sausages and 345 spam classic cans with his own urine at a Sam's Club in Lady Lake. Now it's gentlemen.
triggering a $10,500 loss. Store surveillance and a witness report enabled detectives to link his Mitchell Sam's Club membership and his driver's license photo to the incident. Nice work, true detectives. Urine detectives. Look, there he is. There's a picture of the guy.
How does his urine get in the can? I know that these cans are ending up in some sort of. I don't think they do. I think it hurts the label. Okay. I think there's going to be a kind of dollar store in Florida with plenty of cheap. Canned meat. Sticky cans of canned meat. Was it one urination or multiple urinations? It was one flow. That's a good flow. That's good. Zip in on the guy. Let's just see a close-up. That's some real urine.
I wonder if his family, how they're feeling about this. You know, is that his prison garb? Is that prison garb? I think so. Yeah, yeah. Shoulderless. That's it. Back is. Could you zip me up? I mean, he's 70. Like imagine making it this far in life and you're like at Sam's Club. You know what?
I'm pissing on the sock Jerry does that thing about the fuck it ears fuck it this is he just goes I don't know why he would choose this as his fuck it moment yeah I'm gonna go down to that Sam's Club and I'm gonna urinate on canned meat That's what I'm going to do. I mean, he looks guilty. I don't care how much piss he has. He cannot ruin $10,500. That's just an insurance claim, I think. Maybe.
the liquid spread to a lot of, I have no idea. That's why I asked if it was one or more urinations. Yes. I just like that the, this is what, this is where this show is what it's turned into. I get a hundred, not about the cars, not about the 963. No. I get 100 messages about this. Right. And Nobleman Magazine, this is what you bought today. This is what you bought. His bail is $3,000. He just peels off a few hundies.
Going back to Sam's Club. He's taking another leak. Is he still a member of Sam's Club? No, he's not. He's going to Costco. He's going to get the hot dogs. It's going to be an internal investigation. He'll live with whatever they decide. All right. As I understand it, Henry Catchpole is online waiting for us. All right. Before he comes on.

He's tall and smiley and one of my personal favorite automotive journalists. You can currently find him on Hagerty's YouTube channel. And guess what he just drove? So I've got... And this is when it gets loud. Really loud. Even I couldn't hear what I was saying. There you go. Please welcome to the show, Henry Ketchpole. Henry, nice to meet you.
you're in london right now end of the day for you beginning of ours exactly yes yeah it's been a good day here i'm kind of a little bit north of london so i'm out in the countryside so
Yeah, nice sunny day. I absolutely love the video. How did this opportunity come about for you? So it was all pretty last minute, really. I think the whole project had obviously been... rush exactly but the fairly sort of truncated timeline and it was not even a week beforehand that they basically went are you free on friday do you want to go to the mall
and drive a car that i think at that point they even said we can't really tell you exactly what it is because they'd only teased it at that point we knew i knew what it was but um yeah and it's one of those invites you definitely don't say no to wow um Well, you get there, you see the, I'll guess, I'm guessing they had the 917 with it and the 963 together. They did. And we literally flew into Le Mans on a tiny little plane.
and um as we landed pretty much they were arriving which is pretty cool and 917 um 917 drove in as well and the the 963 was in the back of a truck but yeah it was really cool what surprised you most when you first sat down in the car When I first sat in it, I think the surprise was actually the real difference that the interior made, because they'd obviously trimmed it to look like the 917, which had all the sort of lovely sort of light tan Hermes.
leather in it so they're done the same for the 963 and when you take out all the sort of the safety sort of head restraints and stuff that you get in the race car and you put in that light leather it it really makes it feel kind of much airier than you expect obviously it's fairly claustrophobic in some respects compared to a normal car yeah compared to what you might expect for that sort of thing and how you have to kind of you know slot your way down in particular if you're as tall as me
Actually, it feels a lot less intimidating just being trimmed in kind of lovely light leather. You know, and they call it a road car in that you can... I guess, drive it on the road. Is it even legal to drive on the road? Like, is it really a road car? You know what I mean? It has number plates. So they basically...
They got special dispensation from the French government to do the stuff that they did around Le Mans on the day. And they've got dispensation again from the EPA in America to drive it around. uh on the road out there i think as well sort of because it's a one-off and people sort of get what was going on with it so legally to that extent yes you can can do it um
Yeah. And I suppose physically it can it can do it as they proved. So, you know, you've been doing this for quite some time. You're, you know, a veteran automotive journalist. Frequently, you know, I like to go back and watch new model cars be reviewed by automotive journalists from 20 years ago. And, you know, they're zero to 60 times. 5.5 seconds. And they're going.
Wow, this thing is great. Tell us what this was like to drive. Was it really thrilling to drive? Because it, you know, the video you made when the sound turns on got me so excited. Like suddenly it felt like you were just transported into a new world. Is that what the driving experience of this car is? Yeah. And I think there's so much about it that is, I mean, I'm sorry.
to start off with there's things like the hand clutch i've never driven a car with a hand clutch so on the steering wheel there are the lower paddles there are six paddles three on each side and the lowest one on each side you can use either one for this clutch So you start it up, except you sort of don't start it up because it starts in electric only mode. Pull in the clutch, select first gear, accelerate away. Yeah. And you're still just on electric mode. The V8 behind you.
is not going at this point so already it feels sort of weirdly alien and then you reach 45 kilometers an hour it says bump start ready you dump the clutch with your hand so there's no feeding in effectively there's no sort of there's no sort of having to be gentle fitting yeah just and it just bump starts the engine it comes alive and that's i mean that is such a it's such a thrill i think there's something weirdly i don't know exciting about
a normal bump start, perhaps it's because the car generally the car's always broken down beforehand. And therefore, usually when you bump start cars just as absolute joy, you've managed to get it going. So there's something already quite cool about a bump start, I think. And then just to have it in this was really, really cool. And that huge noise coming in. Yeah, I certainly thought it was pretty thrilling. Yeah, it's super exciting.
You know, but but, you know, I write movies in television. I know I love cars, but I don't this this hand clutch you're talking about. Does that mean there's two pedals on the floor or is there a second clutch?
on the floor that you're using no and then where like show me with your hands like where where is this hand clutch where is that and is that something you've used before or driven with before is that on a lot of race cars no so it's not something I've used before it's a sort of pretty modern thing so it would be sort of down there you sort of operate it with a sort of bottom
two fingers really um to pull the hand clutch in and then you've got the sort of normal shift paddles above it and then the top is really sort of just for the race drivers yeah yeah just balance and things like that but so no there are two on the bottom you can pull either one which is quite important because
when you come back down below 45 kilometers an hour so if you are on the road in this so you come up to a junction you have to remember to pull the clutch in so the engine would then idle behind you and you'd be back on electric power the only trouble is that obviously when you turn the wheel because it hasn't got a lot of lock so you need a full lock at which point you end up sort of you can pull the other clutch paddle as well if that makes
sense just to make it easier so it doesn't matter which one um there's quite a lot to think about in quite a short space of time kind of getting used to the card definitely it is you know it reminds me of kind of joy sticking a video game where you're hitting a and b on an xbox and you have to do a lot of different things you can
get good at it but it does take a lot of time to kind of figure it out and what a big machine and a fast machine to have to worry about all of that I mean is there anything that you've driven before that it reminded you of in any way I suppose you're in the realms of things like the Valkyrie, which I've done the Eston Martin Valkyrie, in terms of that sort of jest.
well, hybrid power change to some extent, but also noise, the cramped environment, the feeling of definitely being in a race car like that, that's probably the closest. going back then there are things like the clk gtr um and i suppose from the porsche side i've had i've driven i suppose two or three times now the 98 lemar winning gt1 nylon gt1 which was obviously full carbon tub and it's sort of predecessor in some respects. So, yeah. Was there any sort of, you know, downtime chatter about...
Hey, we may make this and sell a few more of them. you know we had the carrera gt we had the 918 we've been waiting for porsche to go hey we've got something new we can't tell over here like is this the thing they're going to make? Or is this just like so we can bide some time until we announce the thing we're going to make? What do you think is going to happen? Are they ever going to make another Halo car?
I think they're going to make another helicar at some point, but this isn't this isn't it. I mean, I think we all hoped it might be sort of when they started teasing it. Yeah, yeah, I think to keep it as well, because there's only one of that original. 917 built for Count Rossi. And now there's one of these. It's the sort of the perfect pair. I don't think they'd want to do it again. And realistically, driving on the road, you would.
i'd love to drive it on the road i'd love to give it a go because sort of going up and down the taxiways i thought it would feel so totally race car that you couldn't really conceive of ever having fun in it on the road but the steering is so nice yeah so just giving it a bit of a sort of you know weave imaginary slalom down there and sort of actually
It feels so underneath you and there's actual steering feel through it because a lot of race cars you get into, until you've got real load going through it, they can feel a bit light and remote. But this was proper Porsche steering, basically. And that was...
was pretty pretty cool so yeah i i kind of could see driving on the road in some respects and the electric bit of the powertrain would make kind of maneuvering i suppose and low speed stuff easier because you don't have to juggle a really difficult um clutch or anything like that and
Yeah, in some ways it would be good, but the turning circle would make it difficult. There was still a man standing next to the car with a laptop when it was started up and you kind of can't take him with you everywhere. What are you doing? You could. It's just a new kind of thing. You bring your laptop man with you when you're driving the car that'd be all right i really related to when you first uh
You know, when you sat down in the 917 and, you know, I know you didn't drive that car, but you got behind the wheel and you just felt that history and that heritage. Describe that feeling because I've done the same thing and I've had those feelings. Yeah, I suppose. I love the history of something like that.
it's been restored fairly recently. But they've kept all as much originality in it as possible. Yeah. And whenever you sit in something like that, just just thinking of, you know, other people have held that steering wheel, what the car has done, what it's seen, and all the sort of even bits
the sort of bits of chip paint just inside the the door that lovely sort of little door goes up and it's obviously silver it's martini silver but underneath you can see the blue from um you know previous life of things that it had done because it raced in austria originally and then i think it did abs testing back at the factory for a bit um before it became this this famous road car so yeah there's just
When you can really feel the history in a car like that, I think it's amazing. It just sort of gives you goosebumps. Yeah, it is just amazing. And I remember the first time I saw a 917 coming around the corner up at Willow Springs, I got goosebumps. I just went, oh my God.
sound and the look of it and uh it was the mcqueen car i'll never forget it tiny sorry sorry i didn't just gonna say i kind of can't believe how tiny it is as well i think because it's that sort of it's it's very much one shape so it's quite hard in in photos to tell in isolation actually how big it is but you get up next to it it really is tiny it's kind of tiny i know it's huge huge flat 12 behind you it's a huge tiny car like the new bmw m5 touring
Well, no, that's actually a huge, huge car. Just a huge car. Yeah, yeah, that's a big one. Now, I noticed, and maybe, did you put any thought into the watch you were going to pair with this drive? Or do you always wear the Omega Speedmaster on the NATO? Is that what it was? It was, yeah. It was an Omega Speedmaster, which I've had for about 10 years, about so now, on a grey NATO.
i i've worn that watch a few times in sort of really big momentous cars i think i i drove when i drove the mcmurtry um and there's a channel there's another podcast called a hairspring podcast and he said yeah it's a land bound spaceship this car so it seems appropriate to have yeah have a speed master on and that's kind of kind of how i felt i suppose well the mcmurtry would be a whole different which is more insane mcmurtry or this car that you drove oh um i mean
The momentary is just ridiculous. It's mine. I mean, it's even more claustrophobic because it's so much smaller. Yeah, yeah. And with that downforce that kind of you can experience it kind of any speed, it's absolutely. It is totally nuts. So, yeah. Well, Henry, it's been a pleasure catching up with you, man. When you're in L.A., will you please call and come on the show and sit right here and chat with us?
Definitely. I'd absolutely love to. That would be great. We'd love to have you. And if you want to catch Henry, he's on Hagerty's YouTube channel. Not just reviewing the 963 RSV. He's got a lot of amazing videos. Henry! Thank you. You can go to bed now. And we'll see you next week on Spikes Car Radio. I'm very scared.
