Episode description

Alreeeet! Welcome to Speak Up Sunderland!

Join Betty Ball & Stevie B for this weekly podcast, proudly made both in and about Sunderland!

Last week, for the first time ever in its history, the Roker Pier and Lighthouse opened to the public.

Originally built between 1885 and 1903, the lighthouse had fallen into disrepair, until restoration work began just six years ago, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Sunderland City Council.

Eager to find out more, we spoke to volunteers & visitors alike - including the grandson of one of the lighthouse keepers!

  • Phil Tweddle - Chair of Roker Heritage Group
  • Claire Purvis - Pier Project Coordinator
  • Anne Hoik & Peter Connor - Tour Guides
