And how can we pull out all sorts of decorations for Saint Patrick's Day? And we don't do anything for Juneteenth. Leprechauns were never slaves, except to the wrong greed. Welcome to Cloud nine, a Superstore podcast. I'm Jason and I'm bb and we're back, back back again. New episode. This aired on January fourteenth, twenty twenty one. It's called Hair Care Products, written by Dioetta Soakin and directed by Charles Stone the Third, whoh the Third.
You have any thoughts about the episode that you want to share, you can reach us at Superstore podcast at gmail dot com or find us on Facebook or Twitter, and we'd be happy to include your comments in the podcast. Yeah, it was a long break, it was, and a lot's changed since we last recorded. We're the new apartment again, so hopefully it's not The sounds not too different. Yeah, we're sitting a lot close to each other and we're not looking at each other. We're like looking the same direction.
Yeah, we're at a bar. Yeah. Then we also we got some news to cover. I think we'll probably do that at the end. Okay, yeah, but hair care Products, how do you want to jump into it? What is the phrase. It's like not with a crash or a bang, but with a whimper. They had Glenn's away because he had COVID. He's quarantine. Yeah, and so Dina's doing morning announcements and they're not in the warehouse or their breakroom. I'm assuming we're in health and beauty
because the raccoons finally claim the warehouse. I like it here. It's well as like confident Women because corporate is doing the bare minimum and unlocking the black
hair care products. That was pretty cool of corporate to fix it. Oh yeah, it takes a lot of courage to make a gesture this small, this late in the game, which, to be honest, I didn't know was a thing in like stores because I go to, like, if I'm gonna be encountering black hair care, I usually see it out in the open, or I'm going to like a beauty supply store that caters specifically too black hair care. So I'd never noticed anything like locked up. Usually they locked
up the wigs because those were like expensive. I think it's because they think black people are going to steal them. Yeah, we have to ask for the key. It's like a walk of shame. Every time you need Argona. Well, but yeah, they they're doing the bare minimum. And I believe that they would do that because they do that with a bunch of random shit at the stores, like things they think people will steal or have been known to take. I didn't know hair care products were on that list,
to be honest. I think hygiene products in general do get stolen a lot. I know I seen razors, but I thought it was because people like sharp objects. Well people do. But yeah, they were doing the bare minimum, and the black employees were like, about damn time, rightfully, so dialogues. Well, the white people were like, we fixed it. We saw racism in the store. Yeah, and Garrett. This was a very Garrett centered episode, which was exciting. Yeah, so Garrett is kind
of forced to lead this movement in the store. They push him into it. Yeah, for sure. He gets pushed in by Dina and Jonah, his two white friends, and they're both well meaning in their own ways. It's kind of fun how much Jonah was like not centering himself. Centering the fact that he was not centering himself has been weird and annoyed all day, but at least he's tried to help out without putting the burden on me. Oh wow, yeah, well thanks. Decentering takes a little practice, but
I think I'm getting better at it. You know, I just have a tendency to make things about myself. He's trying, he is, that's a this is a Jonah. I don't mind seeing it kind of harkens back to his original persona when he first started. So that was kind of nice to see that kind of like self righteous social justice warrior kind but doing the most well, saying that you're not doing anything to try to take away like people's like space. Like the interaction he had with the new lady Nia, Nia,
Yeah, he was like trying so hard. He like kept looking back, Oh sorry, Nia, did you did you want to say something? No? Are you sure? Because I don't want to make this about me. If if you've if you've got something, I don't want to make it about you either. But I don't have anything. And then the other lady was talking about supporting black businesses. I got on it about that. It's like, uh, that was good. I don't know. I thought it
was funny because a lot of well meaning white people do that. They're like stepping on their own toes trying to get out of the way. Yeah, what else. Glenn's also trying to be well meaning throwing that pizza party for so Glenn is being well meaning by bothering somebody. And like the thing is like with Garrett getting in charge of this, like why didn't you ask to be paid for that labor? Because that should have been the first thing.
Like if you really want to talk about, like, oh, you want me to do this project or you want me to make this thing that's outside of my job description. And he literally tells you what his job description is. It's not my job to call out every racist thing I come up against. It's my job to announce sales and pretend not to notice when people return you swimsuit. So if you're gonna make me do that, you should pay me. And I wish they would have touched on that a little. And
I think they kind of tried a little, but not really. They didn't really because I think sometimes things need to be really spelled out when it comes to that. Yeah, And I thought it was funny when that one guy thought he was Dominican because he could be Dominicans are black. That so funny when he said it the I don't know. It was a funny episode to me just because I saw like white people sweating. Yeah, and it's it's true what Garrett says, like it's not his job to keep track of all
this and point it out all the time, like being exhausting. Yeah, he has a job that he's paid the due. Yeah. And then when he does the meeting where everybody's there trying to like add things to the list, which he should have done that. I think the second meeting he had with just the black employees was a lot more productive for everybody there. But in the first meeting, like it turns into him just sharing stories of like the black struggle and like all the way people consume this is so toxic,
and that's illustrated really well in this. I like that. That was his friend's suggestion, Dina was like, tell us a story about how terrible it is to be a prison of color. Then everyone really wants to they scoot in during a pandemic, it's a murder podcast or something racist story time gather around. Everybody would go oh well no, no, no, don't actually
scoot in. What did you think about that meeting? It was it was a lot they do a good job in these big meetings of having like every character like coming at this from their own perspective, and it's usually pretty funny. You know. You got Justine and her black voice. Oh my god, they called out Justine. It was funny. How about Justine trying to sound black and when she talks to black people, Oh, that's how you're going to do me. And you've got Isaac and Earl that are very much
like toxic white guys. Yeah, Isaac really wanted to touch what was her name, Janet Janet? They are Janet. Yeah, he really wanted to touch Janet's hair. He was. It was just awkward. I couldn't imagine to have to work with that kind of shit sometimes. But yeah, there was no Marcus. That was interesting. Yeah, maybe he got sick with the rona too. He already did though, Oh you could get sick again.
Or maybe he had something else. Yeah, I don't know. It's hard to think of what to say about all their discussion, but like it
was, it was a good episode. Like it was a very good They brought up a lot of important stuff and it was really like, because we didn't have this other plotline, it like strictly focused on experiences people of color having in the workplace, and they even included Cheyenne, Mateo, and Sandra in the conversation and how their Asian features or whatever caused them to experience a
different type of racism in the store. And then it was funny because they had this other subplot with Cheyenne and Matteo and Sandra, so there's even like a little bit of like tension in there. So when Sandra was talking about being Hawaiian, they they had a little bit of something to say about that too, which is funny, like engaging, and like, obviously she's not
Asian like them, She's Pacific islander or whatever. You know, people are different, they come from different places and that's okay, And that was kind of a cool way to include like some of the things that are happening to people who have those features. Though, but then everybody wanted to go to
the pizza party, okay. So yeah, Glenn was like, how can I make it so that the black employees that my store feel like I care about them and I don't want them to have a bad time at work, and obviously to show them that I'm not racist against them, And his solution for all those problems was to buy a buttler to pizza. Yeah. I decided to buy pizzas for all the black employees as reparations for the hair care
products. You got us pizza. Pizzas bettered than nothing. Honestly, that feels really on point without corporations or management think about how you can like pacify this group or reward them or feel like, you know whatever. It's like that's a go to thing to like reward people in a corporate environment. Yes, it's pizza. Yeah, we hit our quotas, we were doing great or you know, our customers are being real dicks this quarter, so they
give us pizza. We made millions of dollars, We're going to spend a couple hundred on pizza. Yeah. And so it was supposed to go to Garrett to decide who gets in and who doesn't. So make sure that every black employee gets some pizza. And if there any borderline calls, well you get final set and it becomes like the Oppression Olympics for people of color and those with disabilities. Even so, it was interesting to see like the diversity
that they actually have in store. Yeah, and it was interesting, No pun intended but like how it's not black and white, and like the black people are getting pizza, but like do these people count, like or who are you including in this group? Yeah? What does oppression mean in the space in this environment? And I don't know. I think they kind of weeded themselves out for the most part, for if you didn't like you'd know, you don't get pizza, like obviously, But then there were like Isaac
and what's his bucket? Yeah, earl, earl, Yeah, those two guys wanted pizza and they complained about wanting pizza. So Glenn gets them pizza. And that really, like I think that Shakescaret up to actually speak on how he feels about things to a point where it's like good that he released all that, because it would have been bad if like they didn't have any sort of release from him at the end of that day. So that was really interesting. And then like at the end they had their little Kumbaya moment
where like the white people were like, here's pizza. It's just like okay, so you're just trying to reinforce that the white people at the superstore are terrible, thank you, Like they're trying they're well meaning, so there's no bad guys here. It was that for me anyway. It's also funny because it's like, no, Garrett loves pizza, yeah, I mean yeah, like he loves snack foods and video games and like, yeah, I could see so for him to call back for the pizza at the end, Siddy
was never about the pizzas. Okay, so it's still not about the pizzas, but he would like me to grab the pizzas. So I like that. That was fun. It was a good episode. Yeah. I think Superstore does a really good job and it's probably gotten a lot better at handling these big issues like systemic racism in the workplace and still being a sitcom that's funny. Oh yeah, I laughed really good. Making light of health seriously issue is at the same time, it's like it's a crazy thing to have
to and the writing and performance and they do it well. I think they understand a part of it where it's like if you don't laugh, you'll cry, and that's where comedy kind of sits. It's like on the edge of tragedy so many times that's when we seek to laugh a lot of us and so I think it's a because it comes from the truth as well, Like you can tell that there were diverse voices sitting at the table when this conversation
was happening, and that was good. Like they talked about microaggressions and they talked about like issues within the communities sometimes where like we disagree on like what black traits are here, like that fucking onion sour cream with onion shit. Well, that one affects me and my brother because I hate sour queen in onion. Yeah, but that's more of a you thing, not a black thing. I'm pretty sure that's a black thing. I think it was cool,
like and it was interesting to watch and I liked it. I also really like the Sandra and Matteo and they're business about having like a social distancing get together that they weren't going to invite Sandra to. But then it turns out to be a thing that only Sandra gets to go to. Sandra and Matteo nice. So it's just gonna be me you Sandra outside your apartment watching her be fully loaded. Yeah, oh shoot, I forgot I have something
on Friday. I like how she called them out though, Like I was wondering about that where she's like, your mask thing is not very tight, so I'm not going to go there with you. Yeah, because that first scene where we saw Sandra or Jyanna Mateo, like they had no mask on when they're in the middle of the store. Yeah, and I was wondering about that, like, Okay, they're just playing fast and moves with the rules on the show, I guess. But then Sandra calls them out.
Yeah, so that was nice. I noticed you guys are pretty cash with your COVID safety us WHOA. So yeah, I liked that episode. Is there anything want to say about it in your notes and stuff? No, not really. I think it was good. You should watch it. Yeah, and I really like it. Without Amy, it would have been a very different episode with it. She would have centered it around her. She would have been the white Latina or the beige Latina. I'm sorry because she's
not white. I know that she's never gonna be white, but she would have really a lot of like, well, guys, I don't know, she's Yeah, it would just be a lot of that. And then like because she yeah, I mean, okay, she wasn't there. She's just not my favorite. Maybe I'm painting her more racist than I should. But a Latina who's dated so many white guys in Missouri, what would her experience be with like, because she was probably right there, like being very passive
about the hair care. Yeah, I think she's holding the keys too, you know what I mean. She would be very hesitant to take action or to to believe that there's actually like racist things happening and not just coincidences. Like think about when she went to apply for that job and it was all Latina women and she was like in denial that that's what they were doing. Yeah. Yeah, she would be ghost lighting the law or whatever it's called.
What do they call it? Gaslighting? That one? Ghost lighting is when you shut the lights off in the theater and it's just the ghost light. What I didn't know that. Okay, well maybe she wouldn't gaslight all the way. But that's the thing, Like it's when she's around, it's always about her and her journey. Yeah, and it's just like and I'm glad Glenn wasn't there for that either, to be honest, because his journey
was boring too. So yeah, it was a good episode. Do you think back to season one when they had that episode with the salsa they're trying to sell No. I was also thinking back about like all the really shitty jokes they made about sexual assault too, like oh yeah, yeah, they just they've grown and it's a good growth and it's nice to see what And I'm sad if I hope they can get like more episodes with this cast because I really like Kim. We're almost a Yemma, the new one, the
new girl, the short hair, Nia Nia Nia. I don't know why I can't remember her name. I swear she's the lady from the MTV YouTube series Decoded. She reminds me of that lady. I think her name is Francesca. You can check me on that if I'm wrong, then if you're wrong, I'll cut it from the episode. But yeah, but it's cool to see this cast. I like them. Yeah, the show has definitely grown and is able to tackle issues in a much better way than I'm interested
to see what other things are going to come up with. Well, you want to talk about some news, Yeah, let's do news. Show's canceled. I figured how many more episodes because now they're just like fuck it, we're canceled. We're gonna take it on. But yeah, they announced this is going to be the last season of the show, and season six is only gonna have fifteen episodes, as opposed to the usual twenty two, which you'll give us a total of one hundred and thirteen episodes of Superstore. That's
a lot of episodes, it is. So, I was a little surprised at the cancelation, but not that surprised, I guess. Yeah, I mean, yeah, I like it. I'm sorry. I'm sad to see it go because it would have been cool to see more pandemic episodes. Well, it almost makes Amy's departure like not as meaningful because it's like she's gonna be gone for a few episodes. I'm sure she'll come back for the finale.
You think, so, oh, that's so annoying. I'm sure she will, and there'll be some sort of conclusion of like her and Jonah's relationship. So yeah, it's a bit of a bummer. But at the same time, I'm like, we got six seasons of the show and six seasons in a movie. Oh, I don't know about that. What you don't think there should be a Superstar movie? Maybe? Yeah, So, I mean, anyway, six years of the show is a good run and it's it'll be fun to watch it again, and it's not like a short thing,
you know, you get a lot to go through. Yeah, it's a good show to watch over again. I still can't believe how many people don't know it's a show or they've hurt vaguely heard a bit, yeah, which is okay, Like, fine, you don't have to watch Superstore, but it'd be cool if you did, because I feel like a lot of people would enjoy it and stick with it through the first season. Yeah,
because then it gets really good with decent two doesn't anyway. Any other news they're sure is and I don't think you know about this at all, but they have announced that they're working on a spin off what Old Bow and Cheyenne. I thought you'd be more excited by it. No, that's not the spin off I wanted. I hope Mateo comes on board since they're best friends forever. I don't know, could have been different, It could have been Garrett. Yeah, I don't know much about it, and it's still it's
like it's in development, so it's not necessarily a sure thing. We'll see. I don't know. BO hasn't been on in a long time. Yeah, it's an interesting choice because like who's the audience for this show? Like if Superstore was like doing well enough, they wouldn't have canceled it. So they've got to be reaching for more than just Superstore fans. It's probably like you know, those kids on TikTok, that's what Probably that's the only audience
you can really grab that's new for this area. Well, they're trying to do like a family sitcom with bou Cheyenne and Harmonica like Reba two point zero and then I mean you can only speculate from here, but like you know, they is she still going to work at Cloud nine? Do you think they're going to interact with some of the cast members as like guest stars are I think that's what I would do, since you already know you have a
talented pool of actors that people are familiar with. But it's having Bo every episode going to be overkill, That's what I'm thinking, because that character is just it's good when it's like like very scarce, like you know, yeah, very sporadic, very because he's like always at eleven. He's just got a lot of high energy and I know I've seen him in other shows where he's not like that, but he does have this like face that's just too
weird. Sometimes you just like can't look at it all the time. Chyanne's really cool, and I hope they make her character more developed because she has She's developed some, but I feel like there's still a lot of room to grow, which is why it's kind of that's the only part that's engaging me. Yeah, because like Bo, yeah, I don't know, he's fun. There would be a lot of room for growth on his character. Yeah.
I just wish that they could, like, yeah, find a way to like show how they could be sustainably goofy, because I don't want to be worried about them like not feeding their baby, yeah, or like having their lights shut off or you know, oh, we don't have a toaster because it became a fire hazard because of some stupid shit that we were doing
because we're too stupid. I don't like that. I would rather see like Bo trying to do something like maybe he is trying to do TikTok for like an income, because that's what some people are trying to do, while Cheyenne is like trying to like be doing something else. I don't know, because she was doing horror movie makeup for a while. She was really good at that. What was that one episode where she was just really good? She
was like in a leadership position. Did not happen? She's the floor supervisor, that's it. Yeah, So like if they developed that here, that would help transition into a show too, where she's like figuring out does she want to be a floor supervisor or not? Are they going to keep the set? I don't know, like are they going to show or at the workplace. It's all just wild right now, and I feel like we're being
really critical of a show we know nothing about. No No, But I just thought it was interesting that those were the two characters they decided to follow in a spinoff. Yeah. Well, I would have loved a Sandral. I mean, they're kind of the young family, I guess. I mean, what about Sandra and Jerry, though maybe they'll be neighbors. Could you imagine that'd be great with their adult high school son. Well he's not an adult, but he's like seventeen pushing eighteen soon anyway, So that's I mean,
something to look forward to after the show ends. Hopefully, hopefully they get some wings if it sees it. Hopefully it'd be like next television season. Yeah, that'd be cute, and I feel like we would definitely be covering it on this show. Then yeah, we'll see it if it comes out for sure. Do you have any thoughts on cancelation or the spin off show? Let us know, email us or hit us up on the social
media is Yeah, tell us your speculations because I have so many. Also, like a lot of the cast put out statements about the cancelation of the show and kind of how much the show meant to them, especially like some of the characters. We're talking about how nice it was to have representation. Yeah, yeah, it is really nice, and it is like, that's what I'm going to miss about the show, is like seeing all the different people working because they were working. But I think that's all we have for
this episode. Unless you have any final thoughts, read a book and shut the fuck up. That's all. Next episode is called Biscuit, Biscuit, that's all. It's fun. I love biscuits. I hope it's about a horse or something. Though. That's going to air on January twenty first, twenty twenty one, and there are only ten more episodes wow a countdown. Indeed, I really hope they just literally like just go super hard with their
like social justice agenda, like they just like keep drilling things there. Fuck yes, Like if you know this is this is the platform, Like you're gonna go out regardless, so might as well go out real strong. I just hope the sensors don't catch them or you know what I mean, like people who edit things down or water it down, because I feel like this could be like the best ten episodes the show will ever have, Like this one's already starting strong. Yeah, and I don't know. I hope they
do get to ring me and Jonah. Let them leave Bartley, I'm just done with both of them. Or bring back Kelly. We are bringing back Kelly. I know she better come back next episode. I'm ready to see her. It's not next episode. I think it's the one following. Oh yeah, how do you know? Oh my gosh, are you like Clairoyant? Yes? I was there. I secretly work for Superstore. Oh my god. Okay, now people are gonna believe that, But if you want
to hire him for the other show, he is available. At the end of this podcast, I'm when revealed, I'm actually the creator of the shut up. I'm going home, I'm bye. That's a plot twist. Bye.
