But would I always help each other for high I mean this one time I got scared of hair, so he shaved all the dogs for us. It was really sweet. Welcome to cloud Night, a Superstore podcast. I'm Jason and I'm BB and we're talking about Superstore Season six, episode eleven, Deep Cleaning. Yes. This aired on March fourth, twenty twenty one, written by Hailey Chavez and directed by Ross Snoby. And of course, if you want to reach out and tell us about the episode, about the show,

about any of that, email us, Facebook US tweeted us. All that info is down in the episode notes. Yes, we are available online, Yes, on multiple platforms. Trust if you've found this podcast that you can find that as well, and there's links. If not, I'm sure. I don't know. We're getting close to the end here. Oh no, how many more episodes still? They're over. This is episode eleven, and there's gonna be twelve and thirteen, and then the last two will air together.

Oh so they're going to have a special fine finale. Yeah. I don't know if it's just like the last two episodes that they're putting together, if it's like an actual two part hour long episode. This one is a lot of stuff happening, Like a lot of really good development happened. I think this is one of my favorite episodes so far. Yeah, it really feels like they're moving all the characters around to have like a good finale, good closure. Yeah. I just really enjoyed Matteo's story arc in this.

They're giving us a lot of the things that we were asking for. Yes, they were, And it was interesting to see Jonah kind of intertwined into that because they did, like they have a dating family in common. They've dated into this family. Yeah, the Sosas, and it was cool to see the parents come back. Shoot, an order just came in for Ron and Connie Sosa. I mean, they didn't even really like me when we were together, so this is going to be really awkward. Yeah, that

was interesting. I didn't even think about the fact that they could come back without Amy. Yeah, they're independent people outside of her, And that's what I love about her not being here is that you can get other characters to develop without her because they didn't really Like I said, I've always felt that they never really did justice to the Amy character in her development. She was

very like girl Boss energy and it just was disappointing to see that. Yeah, and it's kind of cool that she still has a presence on the show without actually being there. Like that whole situation with their parents, you know, it revolved around her character and her and Jonah's relationship and her brother and all that. Yeah, I mean people have impact, which is real. And like, considering her history at the store, I'm surprised not more people

recognize the parents and said, Hi, you're bumped into them somehow. It would have been interesting to see how they interact with like Sandra or you know, other parents. I'd love to see Matteo's parents come back too, like his aunts. I think he had like a couple of aunts and cousins that came in. Yeah, and I would love to see that and them with Marcus. Oh for Marcus's interaction with the family, Yeah, because he used to live with them and now Marcus is living with Jonah. That's still true,

right? Or did Jonah move out? Implied Jonah is moving out and that Eric and Mateo were going to move into that place. Did that happen already? They never really kind of tied that together, did they Did we just assume stuff happens in the background. Yeah, I know, they never show things that happen outside of the store. It was really funny to watch Mateo quip about that with with Carol's lawyer. Hannah followed me on Instagram last week, and we've been kind of dming. Oh my god, you're dating

outside a store. I'm so proud of you. I think we were giving him shit for that too. It's still a woman that he met in the store, but I guess it's okay. She don't work for Cloud nine, she's working to sue them. Yeah, you're either with or against them. Oh that's funny. What do you think about his new romantic interests? Maybe want to get dinner this weekend? Yeah? I would all right. Now my dad only eats to tell you you and my mom is gonna want it

early, like five ish. I still think like Amy's coming back in the finale and that this is just like a sidetrack for him. Really I want that. I think she's really cute. I love this actress. I've seen her in other things and she's a really funny and strong like actress. So I would love to see more of her. And I would love to see Jonah develop outside of Amy and a relationship that's not weird or toxic to some

degree. I would like it if they could grow apart and maybe they come back from Atao's wedding and it's like, uh, they're just good friends now because they've experienced each other. But she's always going to be a California girl now because I don't I wouldn't want to come back no offense Missouri, you

know what I mean? Yeah, I just think that because they have fat Yeah, and that's kind of thing, like the show has been too much like a rom com at heart that has centered this relationship of Jonah and Amy. But don't they have to change the format a little bit to introduce or at least trans transition into Cheyenne's show. I would try to do that. I would try to do that a lot, Like I don't know, this one didn't do a lot for Cheyenne, like she was basically trip sitting.

Yeah, but I don't know. Yeah, I would. I would say, like as a writing group, you know where you have to kind of tie up some loose ends you can give characters like redemption arcs and like, it'd be really cool if we found out more about Brett in an episode or he said words, what do you mean Brett's He's icon? Right. I love this episode because there was a lot of Brett in this episode. Did

you notice that, I mean they pointed it out. Yeah, no, but like it was more than once that Brett was like a little bit of a feature. He was cleaning the the conveyor belt. Yeah, so that was like Brett just being a boss doing like a job the machine. But he was basically standing there like holding the rag to the conveyor belt. Right. It was good. It was good to see Brett doing like menial task as he does. And then he was dressed as a fucking pilgrim. People

seem to really like the party. Yeah, I know, look at the look of childlike wonder on Brett's face. It was fun to see Sandra and her son in this episode two. They had a lot of good chemistry happening because she is being a little too honest. But her edible underwear. Yeah, Jerry and I never even got to go on our honeymoon. I had to freeze my edible lingerie. Mom, that's great. And then they were both confused about how to use that floor cleaner. Yep. Do you think

they were assigned to work together. I think they choose, or it might be Sandra being overprotective mom because last time he worked with other people, Jonah like stabbed him or whatever. I don't remember. He was bleeding. I don't remember. There was blood involved and Jonah was standing over him, so

I can't remember everything. You were not a reliable narry. Yeah. So, like, I mean, what we were talking about with Mateo kind of came the fruition and it's like he's gonna be getting married and trying not to think about my future just because it's so up in the air with my status and you know, everything being held. But I'm just sick of putting everything on hold. So yeah, I whant to marry you someday. Not not that even know if that's something you want, but I'm just it is.

Yes, I love a wedding, oh my god, but I'm so tired of shows ending with weddings between the traditional heteronormative like man woman, and this show has set it up like in one of the first couple of seasons, Mateo and Glenn work together to put make a whole gay wedding like display.

Yeah, and for me, that's like full arc for the show where it's like this store has always been about this, and we're going to be about this, And I'm like really excited for Matayo to fucking get a green card at least because it's true, like you know it, I've seen people like really have to make a decision that normally they would be allowed to think on more, but they have to hurry up and do it in terms of marriage because there's real fear of being detained and deported. And then with COVID,

this is something that was very prominent in this episode. They acknowledged the existence of COVID and the fact that we've been in a lockdown for a whole year. That was like, yeah, the theme of the episode that tied everything together in terms of like everybody's experience, Oh, how has it been a year already? But also how has it only been a year? Oh?

Year wasted? Yeah, the way they were talking about how they missed all the holidays, I think there's also a part of that is, like we missed those holiday ups episodes of the show, Like we didn't get a Halloween episode. It's going to be so nice, it almost makes I wish we could celebrate the other holidays amiss too. Yeah, like Halloween, I was dressed in full headed tost Shrek makeup in my living room for no one, so we got a bunch of costumes at the end. Yeah, it was

fun to see that because that's like one of my favorite episodes. I think I've talked about this in past Halloween episodes where I'd love to see characters in costumes because they're people in costumes in costumes, so it's like double costume. But it's also really I don't know how many other shows have come out where

they're dealing with COVID. Not many, not that I've seen, right, And it's I don't know, what do you say, Like I want to know what other people think about like having COVID in television, Like do you want to see that? Because I've heard people say they don't want to see that because it's like I don't know, escapism, yeah, and television can be that. But like I think I've said this in the past about this

picular show. This show takes place today and it's tackling current events, like it's always try to stay current to the capacity of how writing works in show running, and it's done that for the most part, and I think COVID has to be part of it, especially considering that it's in a place that was very front line facing with the workers. Yeah. I don't know. I've kind of been on both sides. I know, I said on this

podcast, I don't really like seeing COVID on TV shows. Part of that is like it's going to like really date these shows, like cement that this is twenty twenty, twenty twenty one, maybe twenty twenty two. Yeah, well, you can watch earlier seasons of Superstore and there's topical stuff on there that relates to current events. But it's also in some ways a little like

fluid. It's timeless and you know it clearly happens, you know, in this decade or whatever, but it's not so like that like this year, this era, and the fact that the show was ending in the COVID arc is, I don't know, it's kind of distracting in some ways. It's

like an added thing to kind of keep track of. Yeah, what if they did like a full fantasy and they're like, no more COVID, We're all vaccinated, and it's okay, But I'm glad the show is does take it seriously like other shows have like did a little bit with masks masks and then kind of abandoned it. Yeah. Well, like I've been watching RuPaul's Drag Race. I missed the last episode because I don't have access to like

shows like that all the time. But they they're a reality show and they had to deal with COVID and they even had like a COVID special and some people didn't like that too much because they don't want to see like the struggle. And I think that's fair because we're living in it and reality is really really harsh. But I think when you're looking at scripted shows, it's like a whole nother like type of tension and aesthetic, and I think it's important

and I can see how it dates things. But I feel like all documented media is dated, whether we like it or not. Whether you want it to be timeless or not, there's going to be something about it that's gonna be of its time. Yeah, it's just like this like really like specifically nails it in at this point in time. I think that's exciting because like not everything that is done in that way, where like this is specifically done in this time while it's happening is done in a way that includes so many

voices like what was the name of the director and the writer? Like those people like I've never you know, if we're talking about a show in the nineties about things that were happening in the nineties, it was all white dudes talking about it, you know what I mean. So it's just like this

perspective of this time is so unique and telling. I don't know, I really want to know, Like I hope that they do a special series of like anybody who does consultating for this show, like who are they consulting through this time about like how these places these workers are actually spending their time, because I feel like it's accurate in a lot of ways, and I think it'd be really cool to spotlight the consultants and the people who are inspiring these

stories in real life. I don't know, I would like to see more of like the background because this show is so unique and diverse. Yeah, do kind of pick up on the patterns of how they're filming now, Like you know, obviously they wear masks when they're out on the floor, but then they're setting so many scenes in that eating area so that they can have their masks off and have something to drink or eat. Yeah. I was a little, uh, I want to say, a little weirded out when

the lawyer came up without a mask. Oh yeah she did. Uh huh. I caught that, mm hmm. And she's a stranger and those people are older, Like I kind of got why Mateo might have been without a mask with them, because they might be in the same COVID bubble because like maybe well, no, that's the first time being in person together. Yeah, but maybe like they're all tested. I don't know, like, you know, there's no explanation and it sucks. But when the strange lawyer woman

comes up, that kind of freaked me out. And jonah, yeah, seeing those two white people without masks really freaked me out. I don't know. I was just like, where's your mask, lady? Anyway, Yeah he has legs, he sure does. You're going to move on to Dina. Oh you want to talk about Stone or Dina. Yeah. So she was just like creating chemical baths and huffing. Yeah in that closet, pouring all these chemicals. Whoa, it reeks of chemicals in here. We shouldn't

air this out. Oh yeah, good idea. Oh, that fresh air feels nice on my face and eyebrows. And she was super awkward with Garrett right before that. Yeah, and I think there wasn't much to her little story here, but I think it's that awkward interaction with Garrett and then at the end when I I think Cheyenne's face really shows it that, like how Garrett is genuinely interested in her experience. Oh uh, Yeah, everything was great. Dina was especially normal. It's okay, it's Garrett. I was

high today. What are you serious? Well, I want to everything contexts, embarrassing, anecdotes, the whole nine yards. Okay, so it all started first thing in the morning. Yeah. I love how they're like letting Cheyenne be us a little bit where we recognize what's happened, Like she's kind of our reaction. Like m and Hianne looked really good in this episode too. I really loved that little sweater that she was wearing with her like acid

washed jeans. She's always looking so iconic, a little referential to the eighties to YEA love it. Yeah, that's all I really had to say about Dina. Yeah, do you want to talk about that deep clean? So what now we have to do a deep clean like every year. Yeah, one deep clean a year during a pandemic does sound a little excessive. You ever done a deep cleaning in a store? So the way we used to do it, yes, a little bit, but I specifically chose jobs that

were like not as scary, but eventually you had to do it. So we worked. I'm just having to flashbacks. So the way we had to do it was we had to take everything off of the shelves and clean, and you start from the top all the way to the bottom, and once you get to the bottom, everything you accidentally pushed back too far would just

fall down all the way down. Because our shelf systems were just racks and there was like a little like dead space in between the two racks, and they were put together with like two by sixes that we would just cut in house, because I worked at a hardware store that's like a big box hardware store. So we would just move the boards and clean them. Sometimes we would also check if the boards were like warped or messed up, and we would or if they had knots, we would replace them. And everything was

always so dusty and dirty. The worst ones were in hardware and electrical and then the kill wall, which is what we called the pest control wall. Yeah, there have been animals that have been dead found in there, and you had to make sure to wear long sleeves and gloves because you never knew what you were going to find. It was just yeah, terrible dusty work, you like, and they didn't provide a lot of ppe, like you

had to be smart and bring your own. Yeah, So it was nice, Like it was nice to see everybody kind of geared up, and it was weird to just see them do superficial things because it would have taken them like taking out all of the product and doing everything one by one to do a deep clean. So that's where I would be like, I don't know, it's like half clean to be but that's just because again in my experience, we'd pull everything off the shelf and then but we were also doing inventory,

like we were double duty. We were cleaning and doing inventory, and every department had to count every single item in the store and that was done yearly. Yeah, I think that would be just difficult for stores to do during a pandemic, but it would be nice if they could do it at least once a month and hire a special crew, not people who already worked there, but literally, like unless you want to pay them hazard pay. I don't know. That's what I would wish to see where I would think

would work in a perfect world. Have you ever done a deep clean? Well, I was. I worked at a custodian where in a dormitory, so like when students left for the summer, we had to clean this whole building of almost a thousand rooms, and yeah, so they'd be pretty gross. Sometimes it's like, oh, here's a year's supply of their fingernail clippings and paired. Oh that wasn't fun. It's like on a personal level, but right, like you would hope not to find that in a grocery store,

right. Yeah, this is people living on their own for the first time and then more recently working at a pizza place. Like after just a few weeks of working there, kept hearing that we have this corporate cleaning inspection coming up, so we have to do extra cleaning stuff. And that was just annoying, especially because they kept saying like it's this week. So every time I'd go in the work, I'd assume like, oh, I'm glad that's finally over and not to hear about that. And then but it's like

it's still coming, it's still coming up. Yeah, And then it turns out it was like Friday at seven pm. I'm like, that's the worst time you could come in, Like that's the busiest time for us. Yeah, And why is a corporate person coming in like after hours on Friday? Like that sounds like the least corporate thing. That is weird. They would do that to us too. Corporate would always be on their way to do a walk. Oh my god, corporate's doing a walk and we would have

to end. Like if you were doing everything perfect, then your stiles should look open day ready is what they would call it. And that's like nearly impossible when customers are actually present, Like there's so like to have the cut, that's like to me, that was like the coolest thing to see that they redirected everybody to do curbside and that they got to be there without customers.

That is a dream. Like how many times have you ever had that moment where you're like, my job would be perfect if there weren't no fucking customers here at the theater all the time. If we can just do this show without having Yeah, yeah, that's that's the life of a retail worker. Like I would have this place looking great, but people were fucking bitches.

Like you know when you go to the grocery store and you're walking down an aisle and it's like a regular like maybe it's appliances or it's like clothing or something, and you find like a tub of ice cream unrefrigerated, just

sitting there. That's somebody's job to find that and like deal with that whatever it does, because some asshole grabbed it from place and brought it to the other and didn't take the time to just at least put it in a cold place right or you know, even like stupid shit like you might find batteries in like the grocery aisle or something like that, and it's just like, you know, that person took hours taking all of the batteries from a box

and finding where the little hook is and putting them all there, and now they're like here, why why returns suck? That's all I'm saying. One day did not deal with returns lovely, But then you have to deal with all the dust and dirt and relics of the past. Okay, so that POGs magazine from nineteen ninety four. I feel like they're forgetting that this store was destroyed by a tornado a few years ago. Maybe, you know,

tornadoes are weird, Jason. Maybe maybe they left the floor that one that one shelf was like, you know, bolted down with like ten inch bowl bolts, and tornadoes sometimes they only knock out like one side of the store. Maybe that side of the store was untouched. So I feel like they would have gutted the whole store to rebuild. No, I mean, corporate would not want to spend more than they need to to rebuild if they have

a good foundation and they're still shit available. Plus, I would love to see another image of what the supposed store looks like, like how big? Is it really? Like a floor planner yes, or like a drone shot a little bit where you can see above the aisles to give an illusion of like height, because we know that they would have to use CGI. Yeah, I want I want them to do that. Spend the money on that, please, because I feel like we haven't had that in a long time

since they had the tornado. I think was the last time that we saw the scope the with and the like vastness of the superstore. I would love to see, like get a better idea of it from like a bird's eye view. Remember when the birds flew through the store, Uh, like a shit ton of them? Were they blackbirds? Oh, Dina's birds. We also saw more raccoons than we ever had. Yes, yes, I think employees have a better relationship and love for animals then they do the customers.

But we did have a lot of customers who would bring their dogs, and that was there were people who would keep dog treats in their work clothes, and the dogs knew who they were and they would look for them. That's like how dedicated people were to the pets and not the people. I never saw nobody keep a fucking lollipop or treat for no kids, dog treats. Yes, So the fact that they had the way that Glen was trying to reason with the raccoons gave me the energy of like, oh my god,

Glenn loves the raccoons. No, come on, guys, that foods for us. No. I mean it, seriously, guys, guys, guys like he doesn't want to like upset them or really like make them feel like they should really leave. But they should definitely stop what they're doing. He's accepted the raccoons and knows that there's a balance to maintain, even shared cake with them in a way. Oh yeah, yeah, I'm eating raccoon fur and I don't know. Oh my god. Glenn was really losing it in

this episode. Yeah. I kind of liked how I mean, Garrett was very negative through most of it, but then he really came to see how much Glenn has been trying to keep people happy always. That's been not even whole career here, Yeah, but specifically during this pandemic. You guys have to do the people pleasing because Glenn has been doing it all day, all year, you know what, He's been doing it since he started working here. So here's what's going to happen. You guys are going to enjoy this

weird ass little party because that's what Glenn wants. Got it, I'll put back in the punch now, that's what I'm talking about. Yeah, I think Glenn is one of those people that forces themselves into presenting happiness, like you fake it till you make it type of people, but like a whole year of it without you know, that guy goes to a mega church. Now he goes to Facebook live. I don't know how he would handle that, and then like his I don't know how the pandemic would have affected him

and his foster children too. That would have been a really interesting storyline to kind of dig into, because we don't really get those types of stories. And I'm pretty sure that a lot of social services were affected or impacted by the pandemic, and he's kind of like a social service case himself in a lot of ways. But yeah, I really liked seeing his vulnerability in a lot of ways because they were like he was putting on his mask of happiness,

but it cracked. Just get over it. There's nothing you can do to make people happy. That's just the way it is. The pandemic happened, and everybody had a fear. You don't think I know that, but I got to try to give them something. I mean, people have been working NonStop for so long, risking their health, and I was glad that

Garrett got to be the one to kind of see it. I like that Garrett signed up for the party because he thought it was going to be less work, and then it ended up being a party about all of the fucking holidays. Don't forget about Thanksgiving? So on with the turkey. Don't forget about Thanksgiving? Man, you know the one with the Pilgrims and a turkey. Yep, No, I know what Thanksgiving is. Motherfucker wanted Maud. I love that guy so much. I think i'm him. That's why I

aspire to be at work. That was fun. I really enjoyed that. And then at the end, it's like, it's snowing. It's been snowing for months. Motherfucker. Yeah, it was cold. That was so relevant. I thought that was like, yes, this is what this is twenty twenty one, we are here like that. I love that. It's I don't know you, I don't see this in other television shows at all. Like you can almost put the day on it. Yeah, and that's that's fucking iconic in my opinion. Hey, everybody, it's snowing. It's an

all a day miracle. Close the door, Jesus Flynn, what do you got for for us next week? Or we done with this episode? What's going on? I just want to mention that Garfield float what the hell is that? Oh that's Garfield. I made him. Cassandra was really missing seeing him in the Thanksgiving Day parade. Well, now she'll see him every time she closed her eyes. Dina thought she was fucking stoned. And who saw it first? Was it Garrett? Yeah? Garrett, he was like horrified

by it. I kind of thought it was cute. What was your opinion on that, Garfield? I think it was kind of terrifying. Really. I think it's the way that balloons like that just kind of like drift in. I think they're fucking balloons. I don't know, maybe I haven't watched enough it. It's when they have like the perfect amount of helium where they don't like drift away that it's kind of hover and no, I know what you're talking about. I understand they're creepy. Yeah, and then has a

face on it. I thought it was funny. I thought it was cute too, and I thought it was clever that it did look like Garfield. So you can't hit with like copyright if there is any on that motherfucker. Yeah. So Glenn fucking did that like he was doing that party, like he made fucking cast roles and pies and all the shits and the raccoons aid it all they had a feast. Is that it. Are we good next episode? I think that's it. One thing I saw in the news was

that they'd filmed the final episode, so it's in the can yep. Wow. And there were a lot of a lot of like tweets or Instagram posts from the cast members being all nostalgic. Yeah, they've worked on the show for so long now yeah. And there was one from America Ferrera that was like congratulating them on their last day of filming, and it was kind of implying that she wasn't there. Thank god. It just means she might not have been there on the final day. She might have still filmed the episode,

she just couldn't deal with all the cleanup. Did you hear about her directing some movie now? Yeah? Yeah, Yeah, that's pretty exciting. I'm glad she's doing other projects. I want to see what other projects come out from all of the talented people that are involved in the show, and maybe we can kind of keep up with that in a way if we see updates, we'll keep y'all updated. So next week, on March eleventh, the episode Customer Satisfaction will air. That term you saw that a fucking customer

satisfaction such bullshit. You know what, the only people who ever do those customer satisfaction surveys are people who are fucking assholes and who want to rant about

some quote unquote shitty experience they had. You probably caught somebody on a shitty day, or they had a shitty customer, or you're the shitty custom to her, or you know, somebody really fucking sucked your dick at that fucking store and they told you to do the survey at the bottom of your receipt, and you're like, you know what, Jessica, I'm gonna do that. Thank you, You're so nice. Like nine times out of ten,

they never do it even when you do all that. Yeah, but every once in a while you'll get somebody who said, Jessica was really great. She helped me a lot in this department. What a great person. Five stars, And if you don't give five stars, it doesn't count for shit. Just an fyi, anything below a five star rating is technically a fail for that person. So fuck customer satisfaction, go to another store. Leave sorry, Yeah, have a heavenly day, asshole. Attention Cloud nine shoppers.
