Welcome to Spacing Out with BB and Jason this week covering Our Flag Means Death Season one, episode seven, This is Happening. Ye, welcome to Spacey. Now. I'm BB and I'm Jason, and we're going to have fun today. And that's in order. Oh my god, because we're talking about Our Flag Means Death one episode at the times spoiler free, and the series is available for streaming on the service Max formerly HBO. This is a rewatch for us, so we will have a spoiler section at the end of the

podcast where we are free to discuss any future events in the series. So if this is your first time watching and you don't want any spoilers, you'll just need to skip that clearly marked section. Otherwise we won't be spoiling anything past this episode, which is Our Flag Means Death Season one, episode seven, This is Happening. It's originally aired on March seventeenth, twenty twenty two. I'm not sure I can pronounce this name was written by zayre Ferrer.

In this episode, the crew goes to Saint Augustine to buy oranges to treat the swede scurvy. Steed Ed and Lucius going on a treasure hunt while the other pirates search for oranges. They find an orange tree in a church courtyard and meet a nun whom Jim addresses as Nana. Aluwande learns that Jim came to live with Nana after their father was murdered, and that Nana taught Jim to use knives to avenge the death of the Jimenez family at the hands of

the Siete Gios, a roving band of mercenaries. On the treasure hunt, Lucius confronts a surly Ed, calling him on the fact that Seed and Ed like each other. The treasure hunt culminates in the unearthing of a petrified orange under the Jimenez family tree, and Jim remains behind to complete the revenge. Meanwhile, Chauncey Badminton arrives at Spanish Jackies while where she and Izzie are plotting against Steed. Vibe check. Did we like the episode overall? How does

it stend to chest stuff time? Do you like the episode? Yeah? I liked it. It was fun. What did you like? I liked the treasure hunt and the Swede just running around losing teeth. That's terrible. He's like, does anyone have a baggie. I want to save the teeth so I can put them back. Oh yeah, I like the episode. I think it's really funny. It's like a very very quotable episode, a lot of funny lines in it. I was really surprised that Blackbeard hates nature

so much. Yeah, because he's wearing all that leather. Yeah, I like the leather look. I don't think it'd be comfortable though. I like that little pop of purple that he wears. Yeah. Yeah, it's a fun episode. I think both storylines are like really engaging, so it's fun to watch. Yeah, Trivia time, what facts could we uncover for this

is happening? Trivia Samba Shoot? Who's the episode? The actor that plays Roach revealed the Blackbeard bar and grill scene was improvised by Taikawa Tit and Rees Starby, And it definitely feels that way like that, that feels like a sketch out of like a Fly the Concords episode or something like, Oh yeah, well that's the guy I want. And that's who's that guy? Oh

it's me looks so funny. Viko Ortez revealed that they and Samson Kyo kiss during a take of the gym and all the Wandi scene, but it didn't make any of the final cut, as it was decided it was too soon for the characters kiss. Would you want to kiss Weko? Yeah, sure, I'd take it. I'd killy do it in my crocs Deep Sea Dive. Let's break down some of our thoughts on the episode. You can share your thoughts with us through email or social media. We may use your comments

on an upcoming episode. Right end of the episode, black Beard is preparing to abandon the ship and go on his own way. Yeah, is he's gone? Like his crew doesn't seem too present in this episode, so we're not sure what's going on with his crew. Yeah, he seems uncomfortable having hung around that long. I'm still like unclear, like where his ship is. Yeah, well he's black Beard. He can always come and dear somebody else's ship. Yeah, you would think like the two ships would be sailing

together or something. And then sweet Innocent Swede has scurvy. He doesn't know either, everybody knows except him. He just wants a doctor to verify it. He's just some smells of disease. He's like, I keep losing teeth. It's so terrible. I would be freaking the fuck out. That's literally nightmare fuel. And he thinks he can put them back in later. Yeah, and they're like, sweet, that's not how teeth work, and he's like what. And then their conversation about uh, managing their supply of oranges,

the forty orange hurries for the cake. Cake, that's just the cake, the frosty. Yeah, another ten for the cake, and then Steve said it barely tasted of oranges, and you could tell the cook was still upset. He's like a shock and off. It was good though. Yeah. In there, they're headed to Jim's homeland for Steve uncovers a treasure map because he's uh easily scammed. Yeah, and he's like a child believing these stories about buried treasure and stuff. And I think part of him wants to

keep Blackbeard around. It's like, really doesn't want to see black Beard go. Yeah, so that's what I mean. Lucius is picking up on all this about their relationship. Yeah, Lucius is very intuitive when he's watching them and hanging out with them. Yeah, Lucius is seeing their relationship and it's kind of like the audience surrogate there just being like, oh, my god, this is happening. Yeah, yeah, because you're like, at first,

it's like, what's going on? Like these guys are really friendly and nice to each other, But then all of a sudden, you're like, wait a minute, what, And Lucius is kind of clarifying things for us in a way. If we didn't see it before, we're definitely seeing it now. So it's it's different to see like these two men interacting like this

now. And then when Blackbeard got attacked by that snake, not only did he shake it around and pound it around, he also stabbed it today, yes, and then Steed comments somehow well tenderized it is, Yeah, and it could be that's what their improv was about. Yeah, that improv was really good. Like I believed it. I believed it from these characters talking

about like a fake restaurant situation. Well but yeah, so, I mean Lucius was with Steve when he bought this map, and I think it's very in tune with what Steed is trying to do to keep black Beard hanging around. And then black Beard's having such a miserable time that Lucius is the one has to step in and you know, explain to him what's going on here. Even if you're very cool and you wear leather, everyone's trying to impress

you because you are the cool leather daddy. And I don't think Blackbeard saw that for a while, Like he's not aware of how cool he is to everyone. Like black Pete was like, tell black Beard, this was my idea. Yeah, So I don't know. I think it's important that he gets grounded, and I'm glad that Lucius is the one to do it. And he would told him like, you can stab me now I know how I stepped out of bounds. Steve. His outfit reminded me of his character

in Jumanji. He's like the adventure. Do you remember Jumanji? Was he in it? Yeah? Like the newer ones with the Rock and he's in it. Yeah, He's like the NBC character that like introduces oh god, I don't remember that he did. He gave me white Man on Safari yep. And yeah, so that's that's the vibe I got from him. I totally forgot he was in Jumanji with the Rock. I literally forgot that he

was the MPC. He wasn't that big of a character. I guess he's kind of like the gives him the exposition at the beginning, and yeah at the end, Yeah, he looks exactly like that, maybe a little more modern. In Djumanji. It gave me Tarzan, like the way that they were dressed in the animated series, the other people, the white people that came to the jungle. So it's fun that he has that outfit as part

of his wardrobe. He's prepared for every kind of event. Yeah, I'm surprised he didn't have an extra one for Lucius to make him wear it. He did that white suit. Oh my god, that white suit was so traumatic when he was like covered in blood when he was digging up the treasure and he like randomly calls out for Lucius and Lucius is like, I don't know why you'd get me involved, Like, I'm the last person that should be getting dirty. I like Lucius in this episode a lot. He's got

the wooden finger. Yeah, so I'm glad we got to learn a little more about Jim, and I feel like that was a bigger plot point at the beginning of the series, and it's been a few episodes since Jim has had any real focus, So now we understand a little bit more of why Jim is on this revenge mission. Yeah, well he hasn't been on this revenge mission for long apparently, like he killed They killed one guy and they

were like, that's probably enough. Well then they had to go into hiding from Spanish Jackie, I guess put them on the revenge and then that's the story so far. Yeah, it just doesn't seem like it was a priority. No, and their adoptive non mother was very disappointed. What was her name, not Nana, Nanna, but who plays who plays HER's? She's an Orange is the New Black, and she's one of she's on the latinas

so in Orange is the New Black. She is one of the main Latina moms or like matriarchs, and she plays the chef and she is so tough in that show. And I'm pretty sure that both Jim and her are Puerto Rican. Selena Salinis Leva, Yeah, she's Cuban, Cuban, Dominican, ooh, and Dominican. So she's new She's from New York right, Yeah,

yeah, she was born in the Bronx, Cuban and Dominican. Okay, because she I'm pretty sure her character is Puerto Rican and Orange is the New black, but I could be wrong because I haven't seen that in a long time. But she's a really good actress. She really is. And I believed her as like this tough nun that was like hyper focused on revenge. And it was just like such a happenstance that the only orange tree in the whole like area of San Agustine happens to be on her property or on

her church property whatever, I don't know how to say it. And those pirates agree to work for oranges, right the way they when they encounter the nun and she like throws that knife at first. I love the way they're like trying to do the Catholic sign of the cross. Yeah, They're like, we're we're of your tribe, We're part of the group. And he's like, yeah, I just converted friend chie. She had like the laziest version of it. Yeah. I also like her as a like this judgmental

parent with Aluwandi there. Yeah, first she was like interrogating her or them about, uh, like do you live together, are you married? What's going on? And Jim is like they speak Spanish and Alawandi's just sitting there smiling. I love's ability to just have a good time. Yeah, he's really having fun learning about Jim in this episode, and he like sees how Jim's parent figure treats Jim, and he like understands the facts that it has on Jim, and he tries to fix it, Like when Nana was like,

so you're saying that six of the seven are still alive. You haven't fucking killed anybody. You're useless, Like what is the point of you? And Jim runs away and all one Day's like, well, I gotta go fix what just happened. I like how open he was about that. Yeah, and then he gets the full story of what happened in Jim's father and he says that Jim's pretty well adjusted for an orphan raised by a nun to be a killing machine. Yeah. And then right is their kiss is about

the transpire, they're interrupted by the treasure Hunters. Yeah, because Blackbeard has reignited the fun of this adventure now that he understands what's going on with Steed. So these storylines kind of dovetail together here and they dig up a petrified orange. It's truly silly, it really is. It's a pretty silly episode, even though it seems pretty heavy too, with all the gym background.

Yeah, yeah, well balanced, very well balanced. Well, just we end with co captains, We end with co captains and then it cuts back to Spanish Jackie's. Like the last episode we ended at Spanish Jackie's, so something's building up here. Yeah. That was also just a really funny scene where Spanish Jackie is like, he broke my nose jar and they killed my favorite husband. And then the British officers like, I'm not following any of that. Why do they call you Spanish Jackie? I don't know. Are

you Spanish? No? No, and nothing, no answers Astoral Queen, who was the standout character in the episode for me, ucious same Lucius did it for me in this episode with that little oh my god, this is happening. It awakened you in that moment to like, what is happening? What is going on? And then he breaks it down for Blackbeard because those two are fucking oblivious. Yes, and it's so good. It's so good. Yeah, I mean Lucius sees it. I'm pretty sure like their whole

crew probably sees it. He saw it, Yeah, and he thinks it's brainwashing? Is he is very threatened by it. M hm. So yeah, if Lucius wasn't there to steer them in the right direction, they'd still be lost and they wouldn't be co captaining. Yeah, black Beard would be moving on to the next one and having like a feeling of something that's probably missing because it does seem like their kindred spirits. So that is why Lucius is the winner of this episode. Yeah, he won the episode. Sorry

to everyone else, you're all great. You are all really good, especially Swede. Honorable mention four teeth losing dude. All right, that wraps up the main part of the episode. We will go into the spoiler section and talk about some things coming up, I presume if we have anything to say, But if you don't want to be spoiled anything, now is your time to get out of here. Go on, get The next episode is called We Go Way Back and we will see you next time. Let's put our

living stereo stylist in this group. Brace for impact. Spoilers ahead. If you haven't seen the whole series, now is the time to say goodbye. Remember you can contact us at Spacingoutpod at gmail dot com, find us on social media, share your thoughts and be a part of the discussion spoilers in five four three two one. I don't know if I have any I feel

like we're on track here for everything that's gonna happen. The only thing that came to my mind was they're talking about opening that restaurant, and the series ends with them opening like a bed and breakfast, isn't it. Yeah, a bed and breakfast the queerest thing in the world. Yes, So yeah, I think I think Blackbeard can be a chef. He can be anything he wants to be. Yeah. I love that attitude. I'm glad he

believes that. And then Jim. I'm pretty sure that Jim goes on to kill like one other person and it's a Fred Armison, and I think that's like that's it. They're like, a there's probably all sad, yeah, because they kind of set it up here, like Jim's got six more heads to hunt. Yeah, but I feel like they're in an arrow where people are fucking dying of scurvy and shit, like more than half are probably already goners. So I'm excited to see the next episode. What's the next episode

about. It's the one with that fucking guy I hate. Yeah, Will Arnett. Yeah, he's the jack then just threw everything up. Yeah he sucks, which is part of the plot that is he is doing sending him the fuck everything up. Yeah, all right, yeah, Otherwise I don't I'm really curious what becomes with Jim and Pauluwanda, and I'm they get together, they like separate, and then all a one day hangs out with the like Queen of the Seven Seas. Yeah, I remember that, and I

don't remember how that all resolves. Well, so I'll get there. I think they all get in a trouble or like a like a four way like friendship relationship thing. They're not clear, but it's like everyone gets along and they're still all fucking or something. But Jim hooks up with a with like a pirate lady, like a rogue, and they don't give her too much

backstory or anything. It's kind of sad because Jim, because when when all the shit between Steve and Blackbeard goes away, black Beard takes some of the crew with him. Likes Jim. He likes Jim because Jim is tough, and no what happens is Blackbeard maroons the shitty part of the crew on an island and Steed somehow finds them. But the part of the crew that he keeps are like Frenchy and Jim and I think another guy. I think the cook, like the tough guys, the smart ones. Yeah, and I

think Lucius and black gets separated too. Oh well, Lucius gets like pushed off the boat by Izzy, so that sucks, and Lucius goes through hell in high water. It's really sad. Think him and Izzy have some of the darkest timelines, in the darkest like things that happened to them in the series. Black Beard too, when the love of his life leaves him, abandons him in their journey to escape, the way that he copes with it is like really sad, like he's just fucking tormented, Like how could he

do that? Steed really screws us up for everyone. Yeah, well, he's like feeling guilty because he but he does to Blackbeard the same thing he did to his wife and their high moment where they were maybe on the good terms, he leaves to do something so self centered and selfish. So it's like a pattern. All right, Well, let's get out of here. We'll be back for we go way back next episode. Thanks for sailing on the revenge and remember to use your citrus and moderation, but use it please.
