Episode description

The United Nations have called climate change the challenge of our generation. A growing body of environmental storytelling is bringing clarity to complicated climate conversations by casting a vision for a better future, and providing compelling, actionable climate change solutions. In this course, students have the opportunity to contribute to that conversation by creating a 10 to 15-minute narrative podcast episode that entertains, challenges, and moves your audience.

I feel like this class could be compared to the journey of a butterfly. It's a very creative outlet. You start first with this idea, a caterpillar, which is like an idea. It starts getting bigger and bigger. You're getting all the research, all the interviews, and so you have to really learn to highlight what is important and be able to take those risks. How to be less of a perfectionist.

You can work a little bit each day on something and throw out imperfect ideas, like it started out not great. You know, it's a really difficult thing to do. There's a lot of fear, like you have no idea what's in front of you and it feels like you're never quite getting there. It's this huge thing that you spend a lot of time on, but eventually it all comes together and it's in a cocoon and it's baking.

You'll get to some sort of end goal that you are happy with becoming better and better, and it's quite a beautiful thing to see the amount of progress that you've actually made. I've learned so much. You end up with a really nice product to where you can see how your skills have improved. Since day one, making podcasts is kinda like life. It's iterative. You gotta repeat things a lot. You learn so much in just this short amount of time. You get to learn so much. It was amazing.

And you learn how to tell meaningful stories that actually stick with your audience skills that we didn't have before and are so useful. Not only in podcasting, but storytelling in general, communicating how to work with a group, how to take feedback. We improved a lot along the way. Having the skill of storytelling is very important in any job you go into just being a good communicator. All these skills that now I realize are essential to everything in life.

If you put forth the effort, then you are gonna feel accomplished at the end. And then in the end it comes out as this beautiful butterfly that can go out to the world and tell a powerful story. I feel like I've grown as a public speaker and as a communicator because of this class. I definitely recommend this class 'cause it's been. Just so fun learning how to podcast and tell a story. It's one of the classes I actually am excited to go to. I would really recommend this class.

I've learned so much, not only about myself, but also about working in a group, making a podcast, making content in general, and the ability of stories to impact people and starting movements of social change.
