Come in do you live from our Elliot Avenue studios of Sports Radio ninety three point three KJRFM. This is Sounders Weekly with your host Jackson Felds. Good evening, Welcome into Sounders Weekly. Jackson Felds here, good to be with you on this beautiful Wednesday evening here in Seattle, Sounders Weekly. For the next hour here Sports Radio ninety three point three kjr FM, talking all things Sounders FC Soccer, Jackson on the Mike anders Hurst Anders It's good to say.

I don't often get you on Sounders Weekly, but it's good to have you in the priuser both today, buddy, Yeah, thanks for bringing me along. I love it. Well, we have a lot to get to here tonight. You're gonna hear a little bit later on in the show from Freddie Warez. And if you don't know that name, let's teach you about him. This is an assistant coach for the Seattle Sounders. He does a bunch of work with the Sounders tactics, a really influential member of this Sounders

coaching staff. I have the chance to talk to him for about seven eight minutes yes yesterday out at training. So good insight from Freddie Warres on the tactics that the Sounders are running right now. So he's an assistant coach who was actually the former head coach at Rail Salt Lake, who then departed Salt Lake a couple of years ago in twenty and twenty one to come be an assistant here. Goes from a head job there to an assistant here. So

that tells you something about what he thinks of the Seattle Sounders. But good to chat with the Freddy Warres. You'll hear that coming up in just about a half hour here on Sounders Weekly. We're not gonna have Ari Leanwell take us around the league today. He is away and unavailable today actually, so we are actually going to be having an extended chat with Andrew Harvey, our Puget Sound soccer expert voice of Ballard FC, because we have our eyes on

a lot of things as the moment turns. And that's kind of really where we begin tonight's show, as we kind of just have eyes around the soccer world, you know, Andrews. Is funny, we're you know, kind of just chatting a few seconds ago and just to you know, continue that

conversation on the air. It's funny We could go to a lot of directions to start Sounders Weekly tonight, we could start off with the breaking news that came off on a press release and Brian Schmitzer told a soft and I on his interview, which happens, by the way, every Tuesday five five here on ninety three point three KGRFM, the head coach of your Sounders, Brian joins us Softy Dick and I, and he told us yesterday that Stephen Fry.

What happened is during last weekend's game, he got a dislocated finger, and as goalkeepers do, they're a different breed, as Brian said, tries to reinsert the finger that apparently did not go well. So what happened today, and we heard this yesterday as well, was that Stephen Fry underwent a successful minor surgery to correct a joint alignment in that finger. Was performed today here in Seattle. So Fry's beginning the rehabilitation process immediately and not expected to

miss an extended period of time. It should be a short term injury, but still nonetheless bad news. Stephen Fry out for this Sunday's game against Monterey. We'll get to that in a moment. Also, the bad news, Christian rolled on back in concussion protocol, he will not feature in Sunday's game against Monterey and on that quickly the point this is League's Cup action. Sounders are in a group with Salt Lake. They lost to him three nothing.

That's another piece of bad news. We'll talk about that in a few minutes. They are going to be facing the second team of three in that group, and that's Monterey that's gonna be coming up this Sunday six pm kickoff. We'll have a Providence, Swedish prematch show right here Sports Radio ninety three point three KJRFM at five thirty. This is gonna be at Luin Field. So get your tickets today by visiting Sounders fc dot com slash tickets, you know.

So watch the match for free on the Apple TV app or on Fox Sports one. And as I mentioned, listen here Sports Radio ninety three point three KGr FM five thirty pre match and Spanish language on l Ray thirteen sixty. So that match for Monterey without Stephen Fry, without Christian rold On, you have a minus three goal differential. And the way that this group works is the fact that the top two teams of Sounders, Monterey and Salt Lake

will advance. Typical, as with any soccer tournament, in any sort of World Cup style tournament, as League's Cup is mushing together MLS and Lega MX, you get three points for a win in the group stage, zero points for a loss. But new little thing that they've thrown in is that if a match is tied after ninety minutes, you immediately go to penalty kicks, So you get two points for a penalty kick win, one point for a

penalty kick loss. That may not matter when we look at Sunday because of what's going on right now, because oh andres, we just get to the next piece of bad news. So the Sounders lost three nothing to Real salt Lake. Salt Lake has three points, the Sounders have zero and a minus three goal differential, which, by the way, is the first tiebreaker. Right now, Monterey is playing Real salt Lake in a big match. I'll be see if Real salt Lake win, then it comes down to Sounders Monterey.

Winner of that game Sunday goes through to the knockout round of League's Cup. We are not seeing that, not remotely close. Twenty five minutes in in salt Lake between Monterey and a real salt Lake, and it is two nothing Monterey. So very simply what this sets up three points for Monterey right now plus two goal differential, three points for salt or three points for salt Lake right now plus one goal differential, zero points for Seattle minus three goal

differential. As things stand right now, the Sounders would need to win in regulation. I hate saying this. This is just you know, five nothing on Sunday to go through to the knockout round. Five nothing gets you through on Sunday as things stand right now, So no, things are not good. Oh and can we just add another piece of bad news? The United States women's national team currently playing in the Women's World Cup down and I believe

that's New Zealand right now, the Australian New Zealand Women's World Cup. Right They're losing one nothing here at the halftime to Netherlands, and there's I don't know where you want to start. It just felt like bad news on top

of bad news on top of bad news. It's frustrating, man, But like you know, it just it just feels like we're coming into the house and the house is on fire and we need some firemen to come extinguish this, because there's just a lot right now not going against both Seattle Soccer and US Soccer. Yeah, and you know how much of a meme connoisseur I am. I sent you on right before that segment started, and h it's one of the dog with the burning house, and he's just like, everything's

fine, this is fine. Yeah, no, no, not a lot good going on in the world of local soccer in Seattle and the United States here. I think I want to start with Christian rold On because I'm glad you started somewhere because I didn't know where to start. Yeah. No, to me, I think the first, especially with concussions and someone who has a concussion history, I think about his health personally, and that's not something you want to have a history with and continue to have issues with going forward.

So I don't know how long this makes him be unavailable, but it's something that I'm gonna keep an eye for the rest of the season for sure. And we just now going to the team how important he is to this group and how much he kind of fills holes where it seems like they all kind of happen at the same time. He just kind of plugs them all because he's just kind of a doing everything midfielder. I'm interested to see how

this works because seeing him kind of come off right at halftime. I believe it was right after half time, because he started feeling the concussion symptoms at the five minute mark, and we are told it got progressively worse than at halftime. They made the call to make not only the swap for Dylan Tevis for Christian rolled on, but you also had the swap of Leo Chu coming

out for Jordan Morris. Yep, you're the swap of josh A Tensio for oh Bet Vargas in the holding midfield Bryan Schmenter three swaps, but Christian was absolute one of them and a big part of why the Sounders weren't looking right because he started feeling those symptoms early in that game. Yeah, you could kind of tell he just wasn't the same player that we're used to seeing him

be. It. I think it's the first time I've seen Brian make three subse at halftime, to be honest in myself, his whole career as a Sounders coach. Souh, Yeah, he could tell there was not the best team or they weren't playing up to the standards that you know, the Sounders usually have. So you know, I just look towards, you know, the future of him as a player. I hope this doesn't kind of derail his career because we've seen that happen with the concussions before. But I just

wish for the best for him. That's where I wanted to start off, kind of get that out of the way before we kind of get dive into the weeds of what is wrong with his team. Right, Well, I think you're absolutely right, and you know, obviously Christian Roldan's long term health

is paramount and the absolute number one thing. So you know, we hope that you know, he is okay, but obviously the team and he will will take care and I know Brian Spencer and his press conference earlier this week was saying, you know that he was in the building and he was in good spirits, so you know, ultimately, it's just kind of a wait and see approach. I mean, listen, this is a guy who was

out for two months with a concussion just a little bit ago. Yeah, exactly exactly, So you gotta make sure Christian Roldana is okay this time because it's very, very scary for him. But that's the situation from Christian Roldannas. And as we kind of continue that conversation, you know, and once again Sounders Weekly Sports Radio ninety three point three KGr FM, Jackson Felts here

we got Ander's first on the board. You know, the conversation. I also want to get into, by the way, Lionel Messi because oh yeah, oh my gosh, that you know, of all these bad things happening, you know it just as an American soccer fan to see, you know, what he's doing to the pop culture world of the United States right now, not even sports world, pop culture, lebron Serena Williams, Kardashians, they were all there in Miamijk it was there last night or yeah, two

nights ago, right, yeah, it was so it's so much fun to watch him. We'll get into Messi in a few minutes, but let's let's talk some Sounders for a few because three nothing lost at RSL And this was a game. I mean, I was say and right here, you know, calling the game beside Pete viewing, and you know, throughout the first half we're kind of just wondering can the Sounders escape their own half of the

field. They just keep getting pressure, pressure, pressure absorbing, big says from Stephen Fry, one after another after another, And the question was, Okay, can you break out of this, can you get something going? And they never did. And then at the start of the second half, so they go and score two back to back goals and then it kind of just devolved from there. So the topic of the Sounders attack right now and what isn't working, I think really kind of anders starts for me in the

ability of possessing the ball. That certainly, and you're gonna hear Freddie Warris talk about it in about twenty minutes. That was not happening for the Sounders. They weren't possessing the ball well, they weren't advancing the ball well. A big part of that, you'd think, is because of what happened with Christian rolled on. But ultimately, that entire midfield, the cohesive unit,

I mean it even drew Rol Ruy Diaz to come back. Basically it is a midfield of the entire first staff, but it just isn't keeping possession. And ultimately, when you're playing at one hundred degree temperature in Sandy, Utah. You know, just under pressure the whole time, you know, I guess it's it's sort of the dam was going to break at some point,

and it did at the start of the second half. Yeah, it's a domino effect too, because you talk about keeping possession, you're obviously exerting less energy when you have the ball because you're not like running to try and get it back. Obviously you're trying to move off the ball to create options for you're the person with it to keep possession and then create chances after that.

But if you don't have the ball, everyone's working as a team to get it back, right, And I just feel like right now the Sounders when they are almost kind of hit with their own medicine in terms of a team that likes to keep possession of the ball and put pressure on you when they don't have it, they can't really break the pressure. And I think I

used talked about the midfield. I take it one step back. Even with the defense and how you build out from like goal kick situations and how you build out from right after an attack from Yale Salt Lake, right, you have to keep possession, you like, I see so many long balls and up to a player Rowry it is is amazing, But he's not the type of guy that's going to be running in behind defenses challenging for balls in the year. That's not who he is, like he like that's more of a

Jordan Morris style. And it just seemed like we were not connected in terms of how we were trying to break the pressure, whether it was going along, playing it over the top or going through the midfield to try and get through with some shorter passes. But yeah, I just I just feel like they are in a little bit of a funk right now in terms of just getting it out and breaking that initial pressure when they have it in their own

defense. That's exactly right, and that leads to kind of the question of what needs to happen. You know, you know, Christian rolled on now, so as you kind of think about what Brian Spencer and his coaching staff can do, you naturally kind of put the pieces together of okay, well, you know that it's gonna be Nicholas Laderrell probably joining the mix now. He was out with an adductor Payne. He stayed in Seattle for the game

against Royal Salt Lake, so that was a short term thing. Seeing him work out at training, he looks fine, so you think him normal back four I think can stay the same. Knew who Alshall Donna is your fullbacks, Gomez Andradi and Jackson, Reagan, Stephan Cleveland behind him for this game. The midfield is interesting. You know, you think Nico is in there, so Nico, Albert, Joel, Paulo, Leo Chiu, Jordan Morris could obt Vargas bump one of them out. Those are the interesting questions that

need to be asked you. I think that's that's kind of this group of six to find five spots and then roll. Rudia is up top unless you wanted to start Jordan Morris there. I mean, like for a home game Anders And that's the interesting question. Is for a home game, knowing that you're not going to be sitting back and playing in transition saddle, Seattle will try to play on the front foot. They'll try to play, you know,

very direct, aggressive soccer. With that being said, you would think that maybe this lineup does call then call for the role Rudiez and you find that group of six and find the best five to go in that midfield fivesome. Yeah, and Raoul operates best when he has more chances and people to create things for him behind him. Right. He's not the type of forward that you know you're just gonna want to kind of leave isolated and like lob it up to him and hope he does something with him. He's a flea.

He's always there. He poaches goals, he's a fantastic in the box that he does so well when the Sounders are dominating possession, creating lots of chances, and he's gonna get on the end of a few of those, right, And that's that's kind of how we've been successful in these last couple of years. But lately right now, it's been kind of a tough time creating chances for the Sounders. So I think it's, like like I said,

it starts one level back in the midfield for me. And I don't think Albert Rusnack had a bad game, and necessarily he was one of the only ones that I think was not culparable for the performances as a group. It was more on the defensive side, maybe a little bit on the wings too, that they just were not keeping the ball when we were trying to

get it up to them sort of situation. But yeah, no, I like the idea of getting Jordan in there just to have an outlet, you know, whether it is on the wing, maybe you play two up top, maybe you switched some things up a little bit. I don't know. That's that's something that obviously is up to Freddie, who were going to chat

with him a little bit, and and Ryan. But I want to see a little bit of a shift because this team kind of looks like they are out of ideas right now, at least with the system that they're playing. Well, it's a great then kind of jumping off point that we're going to talk to Freddie Warres in about fifteen minutes and talk to him about the tactics. I straight up asked him, have teams figured out your system more this year and and sort of do you need to make a shift in that.

So you'll hear from Freddie Warres, the Sounders assistant coach, coming up in about fifteen minutes. You're also going to hear from Andrew Harvey. We'll get an update on the United States Women's World Cup and the should say the national team who were playing right now down one nothing to Netherlands in the fifty fifth minute, so we'll talk to Andrew Harvey about that, and I should mention

Ballard FC moving on to the Western Conference Finals. I believe semifinal final over in Flint, Michigan, so I'll have news there on Ballard FC coming up here later on tonight as well well. Sounders FC and Boeing are teaming up the support the Washington Youth Soccer Community Corner on match days this season, Judy's in stadium as we welcome Washington youth soccer players and coaches to cheer on the

Rave Green courtesy of Boeing. All right, Anders, let's shift give you Shift Shift gears here for a few minutes and talk about I think the one piece of really great news when it comes to both local and national soccer,

and that's the fact that Lionel Messi is now in MLS. And in case you've been living under a rock, you know that is the kind of the big news of not only the soccer world, but if I think the American sports rule is that the greatest soccer player of all time, I mean one of the greatest athletes of all time, Lionel Messi has joined Major League Soccer. He's joined into Miami along with a couple of his buddy Sergio Skets, who's looking fantastic as well. So Messi came onto the field last Friday in

his first game for Miami in the fifty fifth minute. The game was one one going into added time of the second half, and Messi in the ninety fourth minute hits a free kick Galozzo to win the game two to one for his first goal in MLS in his first game in MLS. Oh and then to follow that up just a couple of days ago yesterday, actually Miami hosting Atlanta, and this is all in league's cups should be mentioned. They hosted

Atlanta, Lionel Messi got a brace. That's two goals in twenty two minutes of bousquets I think assisted one of them, and Lionel and an assist as well. And Lionel Messi in a four nothing win, has just completely I mean anders like, in just barely over a game, game and a half, the guy has three goals, one assists. I mean, listen, I am absolutely willing to get down on my knees on this carpet right now, bow down to my lord Lionel Messi and tell him you are God.

You tell me what goes. I mean, this guy is unreal and he's doing everything we thought he might do an MLS, which is just destroy everything he touches well, and you mentioned how good it is for American soccer. I cannot think of anyone else that would be able to come in and just light this league up and make kind of the casual, not even soccer fan, the casual sports fan like tune into a random League's Cup game between CRUs

Assoul and Inter Miami, the worst team in MLS. I might add that he walked into any won four zero against Atlanta United, who has some firepower themselves, So it's it's crazy how much of an impact he's made. There's celebrities there. It honestly feels like with the people that are showing up to those games, it feels like a Lakers game where you see all the celebrities

on the sideline. It's the same kind of vibe. Man with Lebron James is there, Serena Williams, Kim Kardashian, their kids, You saw djklled, you saw a couple other sports icons, pop icons. Everyone wants to get a piece of Messi. Right, you think about what the Showtime Lakers did for the NBA eighties, right, And if Messi in Miami, and

obviously more big names are gonna come. Yeah. And as you and I have texted about roster rules and Major League Soccer, yes there are regulation You can have three designated players, that's players who make over one point five million. There's a cap for targeted allocation money, we call it TAM. There's a cap for how much TAM you can spend, and that's players between five hundred thousand and one point five million. And there's a cap for general allocation

money that's all players under one under five hundred thousand dollars. But there is no cap for designated players, so you can spend as much as you want if a player is one of your three dps, so Messi obviously is one of those. How Miami gets all of these players in Jordia Albas now joining Bousquets, as we mentioned, you know, does I mean if they somehow

get and load up with all of the fomer Barcelona stars. Well, Louis Suarez R rumored to wanting to come back, like if they somehow got everybody and manage to make it work under the MLS guidelines, that would be incredible, But it is sort of becoming showtime lakery in the sense of, like, you know, they're building a super team, a team that you have to watch it all times because they're just gonna roll the competition. Yeah, and I there's some you know, people who don't like it as much that

are like, oh, you know, they bag on the MLS. It's a retirement league. These players are kind of past past their prime a little bit, which they are I kind of understand. But what's awesome is that like Messi, of course, after winning the World Cup, the thing he wanted to do most is past winter. He's kind of feel like he's he's done everything he's wanted to do in his career. So he's just kind of playing soccer for fun at this point, and that's what it really looks like

to me. And he's enjoying himself. He brought on boost squets to play along with him. He's gonna bring along Jordi album, maybe Luis Suarez one more like all of his buddies are just coming to play soccer with him in the US, because that's the way it goes so um, and they're gonna tear it up. Man, it's hard to see like they're already tearing it up, I know. And they were like they were the worst team in MLS. I cannot stress like usually with these sort of situations, like Beckham

came to La Galaxy. I think La Galaxy was actually coming off of MLS Cup if I remember correctly when he came. And then Landon don have enjoined, like Ibrahimovich joins La Gallaxy. Yeah, they were always good, like it was these good teams and big markets, but Miami brand new team. Obviously David Beckham's now their owner, but he they were they weren't good. They were like last place in the Eastern Conference standings, I think the last

place overall. So it's amazing to see how much one player can make that much of a difference. I think it will though, because they have so much like youth in that team, and I think that's one of the reasons they were struggling. And to have probably the goat of all time just come in and just teach everyone how to do things. And now he's the captain

after one game, which is the smart decision. As much I as much as I would have loved to see DeAndre Yedland the captain aside with Lionel Messi in it, which he did the first game because Messi came off the bench. But no, Messi's the choice for that team to beat. So yeah, it's just I think it's so awesome. I mentioned to you via text that, like you know, admittedly I'm not the biggest MLS supporter of the

league. I love the Sounders and I try and catch every Sounders game that I can, but I probably haven't watched any MLS non Sounders game that wasn't like an MLS Cup final or a big playoff game or something like that. And I've watched two of them since Messi's been here, and they were League's Cup. And I think that impact is going to have, like it's gonna

reverberate throughout the entire country. I mean, there's a reason this contract for Messi reportedly has a piece of the Apple TV pie because think about the subscribers and how much those are increasing because Lionel Messi is now part of Major League Soccer and ripping it up within our Miami Well that's it from I mean, listen, that's that's the fun. Stuff. You know, we had to eat the vegetables and talk about the bad news before we got to have the

dessert. But now it's back to veggies, but some interesting veggies because as the Sounders try to figure out what tactics they need to run and how they can turn this thing around. And I should mention I just saw the United States women's national team has just scored in the sixty second minute. It is

one one game on with the Netherlands. We'll talk to Andrew Harvey about that later on tonight, but coming up next, we're gonna talk about the tactics of this team right now, what needs to happen, What is happening with the tactics with assistant coach Freddie Warres. That comes up next on Sounders Weekly Sports Radio ninety three point three KJRFM. Now back to Sounders Weekly on your home for Saunders FC, Seattle's sports Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.

Welcome back Sounders Weekly, Jackson Felts Here Sports Radio and ninety three point three kjr FM talking all things Seattle. Sounders FC Soccer and Sunders FC Soccer is presented by Providence Swedish, the official healthcare partner of Sounders f seem. We'll talk to Andrew Harvey coming up at our next segment about the United States women's national team currently playing in a one one game against the Netherlands. That's in

the sixty eighth minute. We'll get an update on that from him coming up later on tonight. But turning our attention and staying with the Seattle Sounders situation. They are in League Cup action right now, and as we look at what's happening between Royals Salt Lake and Monterey Monterey leading to nothing at halftime. As things currently stand, Seattle would need to win five nothing against Monterey on Sunday five nothing in order to advance out of the group stage. If they

don't advance, then they're off until August twentieth. So that is the current situation. But in terms of the Sounders tactics right now, what's going on, what needs to be fixed, how can they fix it, and then also just how they're working around the tactics. Had a good chance to catch

up with Sounders assistant coach Freddie Warres out at training. We talked about all that tactic and in depth stuff right there, but we started the conversation because I noticed that he was off doing some individual work with josh A Tensio, who came on in the forty fifth minute of last Saturday's three Nothing Lost RSL.

So we started the conversation with josh A Tencio. Here was my chat with Sounders assistant coach Freddie Warres. You know, josh Is is still a player that's Steve Elkin in many ways, so you know, we've made it a point this year to really focus on, you know, the individual development um and so for josh it was just seeing some things that we saw against

RSL. He was coming receiving a little bit too shallow instead of receiving and you know, behind the back line, as a pivot, your first job is to be in position to eliminate that first line of defense, and when you receive with the ball, you have to affect the second line, meaning with your control, you got to draw people out so we can open up space to play now against the back line. So we were working on his first touch m receiving on a good angles, good body shape, and not

letting that ball rise. So because in the game there's there's actual pressure right exactly, and I think that flows really nicely into the conversation of what happened in that RSL game, right because it seemed like keeping possession and building and then getting possession then into our selves final there just wasn't happening. It wasn't. I think we all, we all, you know, you know, with coaches, look at ourselves first, and that we prepped the guys around

with the right We had three very good games in possession wise. I'm talking about um in that three game week that we almost took it for granted and thought it was going to be the same against a very hot team in the league right now and maybe even a little extra motivated because there you know,

it's League's Cup and there's prize money, so um. But yeah, we weren't the sharpest there and that's that was part of what we saw of Josh and wanted to work on in with speaking of heat one hundred degrees there kickoff, Sandy Utah, when you're designing tactics, does the fact that it's going to be that hot ever go into it? There's discussion, for sure, there's discussion sometimes you know, you you stick to your game model, um,

and then there's other times maybe maybe if we reflect back. Maybe we could have been a little bit more conservative in our in our approach because of the heat. But more importantly, it's not even really the heat, to be honest, I think it was more maybe we didn't really gauge us as a coaching staff. You know what, what the what? How much fatigue came from the three games in a week? Could we have dealt with the weekly training a little bit better as as a coaching staff and design sessions that

maybe we're a little sharper but less in duration. Maybe here was Freddie Warres out training. Let's talk a little bit about the tactics overall, just on the whole of this team. You know, this season we've seen the movement of Altroldon coming way up on the right side and how it shifts in an attack to defending. You know, does it feel like other teams have maybe defended that better as the season has gone along some Yeah, you know,

some teams defend some moments a little bit better. Other times we're doing everything we're asking, but maybe just the final piece, the final pass. You know that we're not It's the hardest part of the game, that final pass. But also well, if you're not as sharp then you've got to create more of those moments so you can make it one out of ten you score right or something like that. It's opposed to only creating six or seven opportunities.

Can we maybe multiply that by two, be a little more aggressive there so we can make sure that we get one or two of them, because like the Dallas game. The Dallas game, there were so many opportunities. I mean, I want to say, four team corners in that game. So much so it seems like it is just coming down looking past the RSL game, not focusing on that, but before that, it really is just not finding that that ball is just working on training and working on finishing drills.

Is that how to solve that problem? There's there's there's many ways you can look at it. When I as a staff, when we look at it, and it's hard because you know you're you don't get the wins that you want, and you know it's always hard. People always are more pessimistic after a loss and forget to look at the overall picture. Overall picture, we're a better possession team that we were last year. We're getting too good areas I think more often than we were last year. We have eleven shutouts

as a group, so we are a better team than last year. We are right now currently, we've had injuries, we have people to leave for Gold Cup. We haven't really had continuity with a starting group, with your Rule, with your Outbert, with your Nico, with your Jordan, with your Christian. We haven't had that, you know, or leyl choose. So like it's been constantly like week from week, Okay, sweet, this

guy's out. Now, now how we're going to try this, And now it's Christian and now it's Chris, and so I think that's been the biggest, the biggest problem because you need that to really click in final thirds. You need the rhythm and understanding, like you're never gonna lose that with Alex and Christian. But then when it's Albert one weekend there maybe Nico or Jordan, then they need some continuity to get a three man combo or whatever it

may be. You know, especially when we talk about that in the attack, when you're working on that right side and it's been whether it's Niko in the pocket or Albert in the pocket or Christian in that pocket is an ever changing spot and changing again this week. So I imagine you then have to with the coaching staff going and figure out how tactics maybe just alter a little bit with a different guy in that right pocket. Yeah, yeah, that's

exactly what I'm saying is it's a different profile. So we don't have three guys are all alike, they're all you know guys that we've tried there. They're all different. They're all different. So one may be more powerful and strength, the other one and be more agility and has the like a Christian can give you that half space run over and over and over. And then you maybe have like a Niko or Albert who are more technical, a little

bit more receiving in there and continue possession. So overall, we can't lose Grass. With all the good that we've done throughout that the players have done this year, goals are gonna come. They'll eventually come. Drop it up with thoughts on Monterey coming to town and you know league at ex opponent that you guys certainly had success against lygue Go at mex In CONCACAF last year, So how do you replicate that success and try to get through this group?

Yep, Um, that's the idea we've just I've been watching video j our Video Analysis gave us all the clips today four for two in defending from them. Very expensive in attack, much like a real Salt Lake I actually kind of they mirror the same. Outside backs are high overload in the middle of park, a lot of fluidity. It's gonna be a tough game. They're a team that has been in the last ten years, the two mount teams have been financially really backed up by the club and they've been you know,

spending a lot of money and bringing in some of the top players. This team is supposed to be, if not the best, one of the best in Mexico. So it's gonna be a fun challenge for us. So that's Freddie warres Soners FCS sistant coach, and that comment they're on Monterey. I shouldn't one once again mentioned. They're currently leading Salt Lake by a score of two nothing. As things stand, the Sounders will need to win five nothing

on Sunday against Monterey to advance to the knockout round of Lease Cup. I'll quickly mention in terms of looking at Monterey, will will know more about them when the game comes around. But each week to a sharp vision opponent Alec with our friend Ariy Lillian Wall of mlsoccer dot com. He's not on the

show this week, so listen. In terms of Monterey, I would say loosen to the two premium match show coming up at five thirty on Sunday Right here Sports Radio ninety three point three KJR FM for Sounders and Monterey will have more on Monterey and tonight's opponent, Atlick was presented by Sharp Vision, Modern

Lasic and Lends, the official lasic provider of Sounders FC. But to go back to those comments and to bring in our producer Andrews first again, my name is Jackson Felt here Sounders Weekly, talking all things Sounders Soccer here on KJR anders the comments he made about the tactics I wanted to get if it is somebody who's who's extensively played soccer at a high level, you know, are you seeing the same thing where we're just we're getting the build up,

We're getting your better possession this year, he said, but we're just not getting that final ball, the final pass, the final goal. Are you seeing that as he is about what's going on with Sounders tactically right now? Yeah? I think he wor did it pretty well there. Like the final ball is the probably the hardest thing to have in the offensive game and have it go right for you. That wasn't in case in the RSL game.

I think it was just breaking that initial line of pressure. That's like the first phase of the game you have to do to keep possession of the ball, and they just kept giving it away and then you have to keep it and like advance it to the offensive third, and then once you're in the offensive third, you have to create something out of it. And it just

seems like to me they're kind of out of ideas at this point. We've seen so many times where Alex would get into deep, deep positions, put a good ball in and there's people battling in the box for to finish it, and we don't really have the guys to do that right now. Ral Ruydiez is not going to be the most aerial threat in the MLS or on

the team. He's He's a shorter guy that's going to kind of feast off of, you know, little chances created by Nico or Albert, you know, beating one or two guys and then feeding him through or a wing or beating their man down the outside and then playing it back into the middle for Raoul just to tap in, you know. So it just doesn't seem like

that is all of They're all on the same page for that one. So yeah, I think there's a little bit to point on the forwards, but I definitely would point it more towards chance creation as what we're seeing with the offensive struggles for the Sounders right now. Well, no Christian rolled on coming

up this Sunday. He is back in concussion protocolf, So Sounders will have to generate some chances and generate right now, they'll have to generate five goals against Montery coming up on Sunday. I'll tell you that twenty and twenty three Lease Cup tickets are on sale now. Support the Rave Green as they face off with CF Monterey of Lega MX at EQC Pitch at Luminfield this Sunday, July thirty if at six pm. This is the Sounders chance for regional domination.

Andrew good to have you on the show tonight, my friend, how are you,

Jackson? I'm doing fantastic all things considered, despite having had reconstructive knee surgery last two get outside of that in the soccer world, everything's great. Absolutely. I've been kind of telling viewers listeners over the last couple of weeks that you've been putting in shifts on this program while you've been playing hurt. So thank you for doing that and continue to rest up and feel better.

But man, there's a lot to go over here. As I'm mentioned throughout the show, we're watching a one one game between the USA and Netherlands and the Women's World Cup. Will get to that in a few moments before we also get to Ballard FC. As we always do, we ask you to take a look around the sound. So for Tacoma to finance so we don't rain is obviously off right now because the Women's World Cup. But what's Tacoma to fine stup too before we move on anything else? Yeah, absolutely,

Jackson to Cooma Defiance, just plugging away there. In MLS next Pro suffered a two one setback on the road against LAFC two, who are debutants. I should say in this season's MLS Next Pro. Some of the teams did not have reserve sides last season, so again two one loss for them last Sunday, but again Defiance in a good spot right now. They're currently third in the Western Conference and first in the Pacific Division. They're back in action

this Sunday. They're hosting Vancouver Whitecaps two at noon on Sunday at Starfire. That should be a good match. Whitecaps are in second place in the Pacific Division right now. Can't make it down to that match then it will air live on MLS next pro dot com. Great Andrew Harvey, our guest put sound soccer expert and also voice of Ballard FC joining us. Andrew I had the pleasure to be out at the playoff game last Friday where they were able

to get past not Onlytown. Onlytown was the game on Sunday where they won three nothing but New Mexico United U twenty three's our friend Ari Lollian walls. But Ballard was able to get past the U twenty threes of New Mexico to move on to the playoffs. And now they're all the way through I know, heading off to Michigan, so you know it was awesome to be out

there at InterBase Stadium. I would tell everybody for the twenty twenty four season, make sure you head out the InterBase Stadium for these amazing, you know, local soccer atmosphere plays. It's just such an incredible atmosphere out there, and they make it a lot of fun for fans. The beer guard and opened all ages now so much fun. But but Andrew tell us about everything

Ballard has going on as they advanced in the playoffs. Yeah, really exciting weekend last week for Ballot FC. I want to give a big shout out to Peyton Barons for stepping in and doing the play by play for me while I was recuperating from that surgery. Peyton's great guy and a longtime co broad

task red mind down at the Tacoma Stars. So thank you for stepping in on that one Ballard, you know, like you said, Jackson, big three nail win on Friday night against the unit of the New Mexico United U twenty threes, who are the affiliate side of the USL Championship i e. Second division New Mexico United, So a big win for them, and then

they rolled right back around and take down Olytown three nil on Sunday. That avenged their lone loss of the regular season, which actually came just a few weeks ago at Inner Base Stadium. Jackson, you were at that match as well. Yeah right, so thank you for thank you for staying home. I guess for this rematch against Oli Town. Maybe it was all you. I don't think that's the case. You can't believe in that stuff if you're in our line of business, Absolutely not. But you know, it's another

fantastic season out of Ballard. They are the Pacific Northwest Division champions, which earns them at twenty twenty four US Open slot birth. I'm sure we'll talk about that a lot more in the year to come. But now they're back in the Western Conference finals and wouldn't you know what, they're squaring off against the same team they came up short against one nil last year, then Jury

County Fusion, who went on to become national champions. And that match will be played, like you said, over in Michigan from Point City Bucks are hosting. It'll be played at noon Pacific time. Broadcast details on that are still forthcoming, so stay tuned to at go Ballard FC on Twitter and Instagram and of course Go balladc dot com. Did we still call it Twitter? Is it? I think it's x x x X. Yes. I feel

like I'm not going to stay on the airline. Absolutely not. But okay, well, well we'll stay tuned for the broadcast details and once again at Go Ballard FC on all the social media's and then go Ballard FC dot com that'll have all the details. But yeah, good luck against Ventura. I mean, that is a certainly rematch that you know they wanted, so hopefully Stas and Peter Kingston and the crew that is a talented, talented roster they have there at Ballard, So we'll see how they do out there in Flint,

Michigan. Andrews. We wrap it up tonight we look to what's about to wrap up United States women's national team facing the Netherlands. It's the second match of Group E here in the FIFA Women's World Cup twenty and twenty three in Australia, New Zealand. Andrew, we've seen the one one game where US went down early but they were able to equalise here in the second half. Have you seen so far tonight? Well, Jackson, I think this

has been kind of a wake up call for the women's national team. In particular, it seems like the Dutch came in with a very specific game plan. They were in very defensively that opening quarter hour, and frankly, they

were kicking the US up and down the pitch. A relatively permissive referee didn't bring out the yellow cards very early, and it seemed to get inside the head of some of the US players and really rattled them there in that first half, which allowed Jill Roard the opportunity to score was a really great goal talk through traffic in the seventeenth minute Jackson. That was the first time in

seventeen matches the United States has trailed at a Women's World Cup. It's been an impressive run of dominance for them and was the first time they trailed at the half since twenty eleven when they were eliminated by Sweden. Rose Lavelle came on. That's ol Rains. Rosevel came on at the half and has kind of changed things up a little bit for the US out there, But overall they just seemed to have rebounded pretty well and clicked the big moment two minutes

past the armac. Lindsay Horan just after being hammered along the touch line by Van Dunk Vanda doinkin ahead or at the near post off a corner to make it one one big moment for the US. They've kind of they've kind of looked like the active team back in front of it, and we're seeing now they're gonna play five minutes of second half stoppage time. I'm sure won't be

around for all of that, but Jackson a draw here. On the whole, considering the first half, I'd say it's a good result for the United States, good chance to remind themselves that they've got to bring kind of a higher level as they start to look at their final group stage match against Portugal. And that match all we played at midnight, so on the morning of Tuesday the second or Tuesday the first of August rather right, so midnight there

on that Tuesday. That's that's an early hour for us out here on the West coast for sure, even more on the on the East coast is three a m as well. Um, you know, Andrew Harvey's our guest,

our Puget sound and soccer expert. Really quick, Andrew, because we have just about a minute here, I think, you know, It's funny when when Netherlands went up one nothing, the discourse on Twitter and you know, the just looking at how people are reacting, looking like yes, sorry x not Twitter, thank you Anders. You know, the discourse was all about how, you know, oh gosh, the sky is falling and this is the year that the US are finally going to you know, not win the

title, et cetera, et cetera. And I think it's kind of interesting, you know, the element of as we're literally watching perhaps a US winner that didn't work, but you know, the interesting discourse Andrew over the US team and how any loss is immediately a disappointment, especially considering this Netherlands team

is what ninth in the world. So I just think it's interesting right now, the narrative that this team is created for US soccer fans of anything less than a win is is you know, kind of the sky is falling mentality, I think Jackson right, you know, the United States has four World Cup titles and if they win this, they're going for their third in a row, right, and you know, and a host of Olympic gold medals to go along with it as well. Although Canada was the team to claim

the top prize last time. For so long, people have really just expected the United States to just kind of show up and roll over everybody that they play, and you know that that's what a lot of people grew up with, and I think they're maybe not accustomed to the fact that now there are other countries that are putting resources, education and development towards developing women's soccer.

And my opinion is that that it's good for the game. If the US deserves to be the best soccer nation in the world, it will remain there because it's going to continue to invest a pretty good chance inside the box here. I'm sorry the nearly just scored as we're talking, right, but it's it's going to take work and effort to be up there, and the fact that they're starting to find themselves in more close protests and having to dig deep

and come up with some big results. A lot of people forget the fact that they had some nitty gritty moments over the years in World Cups past too. It's not like they always just showed up and rolled their way to the trophy, although that was very much the case back in twenty nineteen. Well, this match against the Netherlands in the final and match against Spain in the knockout rounds. So I just think, you know, there's some short term

memory around that that doesn't quite account for it. All right, I think it's good for the game that they find themselves in more of these neck and neck contests. I agree. I think it is indeed, how Andrew will talk to soon, my friend. Thanks so much for spending some time to night. Always a pleasure, Jackson. I look forward to talking to you too at s Andrew Harvey, our Puget Sound soccer expert. Great stuff there.
