Welcome to the Sounders FC postmat Show. Sounders FC Sucker is brought to you by Providence, Swedish official healthcare partner of Seattle Sounders FC. The Sounders F scene Postmatt Show starts now.
It's a final from women field, your Sounders beating Sport in Kansas City two to nothing. It's the one hundred and thirteenth career regular season shoutout for mister Stephan Fry. Let's go down on the field. Michelle Lutcke is with Steph right now. Thank you Jackson.
First of all, Steph, so glad to see you back out on the pitche I'm glad you're feeling better. Congratulations on the win today. What did you like from what you saw from your team?
I think we created a ton of chances. We scored some beautiful goals, even though when they got called back on all side. I mean, that's like a really nice set set piece looks out of out of the training session. He looks like so it didn't work out, but still it's very encouraging to see all that, and we had so many good chances. I think we were in a good mid blog today when we had our interceptions, it gave us a little bit of space to play in
behind and utilize our strengths. You know, we have some guys who have wheels, and I think it's very dangerous for opponents when there's space behind, and today we found a really good medium to exploit that.
How important was it to start this final stretch, not even just final stretch in the season, but also this stretch of three matches at home at this point in the season off with a win in a big three points.
Yeah, big, and obviously also against the team that always is up for it against us, so historically speaking, it's always been a fight, so very good performance. We said the same thing when we had the last three away games. You know, we wanted to start that on the right notes. I think we were in Minnesota and we did and then you know, we were able to get six out.
Of nine there.
And it's the same thing here. You got to take every game one at a time. You can't look too far ahead, but it's important now you do well at home, and today we got the three points, great performance, clean sheet, a lot of positives.
Moving up in the standings too. Now in fifth place, got to get up to that top four spots. In the standings to get the home game in the playoffs. Obviously you're taking on San Jose on Wednesday. They've been eliminated from playoff contention. How difficult is it to come up against a team like that who will come in here essentially with nothing to.
Lose, nothing to lose, and everything to gain in terms of they're playing for contracts, right, you have guys who might be like, you know, I don't need to defend. I'm gonna cheat a little, and so those games are very, very difficult. You got to be switched on at all times, and especially I think a team like us that we like to be in possession, We like to be in control.
You cannot be a lol to sleep and forget about the guys that are maybe cheating a little bit and are waiting for the opportunity to show that they can score goals. That's what we'll expect. And you know, there's parodie this league. And just because the team is eliminated, as I mean that they're a weak team, every team can win at any given moment, and we're gonna have to give them the utmost respect, that's for sure.
Absolutely, And as we wrap things up here, a huge congratulations to you. And I know you don't ever like to talk about yourself and your performance, but I'm gonna make you right now, because today you moved into second sole possession of second place in the all time shutouts with one hundred and thirty. There'll be plenty of time in your life and your career to reflect on all the amazing milestones. But right now, in this moment, what does that mean to you?
Ah?
I just I'm blessed, you know, to have been able to play for so long and obviously be part of good teams. You know, I think when you're younger, a shout out is great and all, but as you get older and you're starting to climb in those numbers, you realize how fragile these things are.
You know.
Even today, I think we're playing a really good match. We're in control one tiny thing, and that shoutout's gone and and so it takes a whole eleven plus players to truly buy in and fight until the very last whistle to achieve these little things. And so I've always been blessed to have have those great teammates. I think early in my career when I had a really bad injury you know, I took it to heart when people said I was injury prone. Look at me now playing
at thirty eight. Still I'm trying to prove people wrong. Keep playing for as long as I can.
Oh, we love cheering you on, Steph. It's always a pleasure talking to you. Congratulations on the huge milestone of the win and the big three points today.
Thanks so much for the time. Thank you very much, Jackson, Thanks Michelle. Congratulations to Stephen Fry one hundred and thirteen all time. He's forty one behind Nick Rimando for first we may never reach that mark, but second in a milestone mark for Stephan Fry here shut out number one thirteen in the MLS regular season. It's no surprise tonight's Toyota Man of the Matches of course, Stephan Fry reaching
that epic milestone. Your local TOYTOA Dealers are probably to present tonight's Man of the Match, and we welcome you into the postmatch show, Jackson felt Coleen roe Pe viewing here for the next half hour to celebrate a Sounders to Nothing win over Kansas City today. Callen Pete, Let's just get some opening thoughts here. We'll let me opening thoughts.
How do you follow seven fry thereat pressible?
Yeah, isn't he such a guy? He's so good. Congratulations to Steph.
I've played against him, He's made some incredible saves and kept that shut out against me. I have called him any names for it blocking me from scoring in my hometown a few times now. But you see his quality. His existence on the field just brings guys together there, his leadership on and off the field, there's a reason he's still playing it there, he says.
You know, he takes care of his body. Obviously he's a very good professional.
But his sense in the locker room, his sense in the field, his quality and leadership everywhere in this league is well known and well seen. So congratulations to staph. Number two is nothing to be you know, scoffed at number two on the on the paper, but number one in our hearts. Right.
Well, I'll tell you what, he's a leader and I love that interview. Michelle did a great job bringing that out and then his honest answer, because a lot of times guys in that situation will deflect and say I was lucky, but we all know he's worked hard. He came up a real nasty injury when he came just before he got to us from Toronto.
And then he's right at thirty eight, you know, to still be.
In this kind of form is very impressive.
And he understood.
Here's what I like. I think he appreciates the moment. It's not about him in his mind, and it's about going forward as a team. But Michelle, like I said, did a good job, but asked him the right question. But that's a huge milestone. And Nick Romondo, I loved watching him play over the years. He had about a twenty year career and and that's a that's a.
Great company to get. You know number two too, So that's great. And look at the game tonight. It could have been five or six.
You know, we got four against Columbus, and I get it they had a field player that yeah, I get that, but uh, but there was a lot of great chances. We talked about the wing play being important today before the game, and I thought both sides, right and left were very dynamic and dangerous. And you are a big
fan of Paul Rothrocks. That's the fourth time he's make somebody in the corner and you know, the first time he did it Uh, you know, I kind of thought, oh, he was just kind of lucky there, But I don't think that anymore.
He's tried that on me once.
How did it go?
He was on the floor.
Good for you, but so was I.
That's the problem.
It hurt me more than it hurt him.
Yeah, but don't take that from those young kids.
But but he but he is so dangerous and the goal and you know his celebration after this gool you know it's the second goal, right, But he's maturing in front of us, which is really fun.
I mean, he wasn't freaking out because he scored a goalie.
And I love it though, was with Georgie, right, Georgia I got for getting his first start. The guy that just came into the team. He can already see him bonding with some of the guys, and I love that. The fact that he was going over to Georgie to have a celebration, Yeah.
That's terrific.
And you know it's great because people did that for Paul when he was coming in a Paul I don't know, is he a regular now?
Can we call him a regular?
Well that's a good point of the conversation. And because obviously you know, Paul Rothrock finished off a really good team goal in the fortieth minute, and listening to your kid just keeps being a big contributor to this team. Whether he now has just a locked in starting spot in terms of what our play of the matches. Two good goals for the Sounders today, we will have to go over those, Watson continue talking about how I think Pete's right. This game could have been much more than
two nothings. So we have a lot to talk about here to on tonight's postmatch show. We're going to continue all the way till seven o'clock tonight and continue talking about this win. That kind of sets the Sounders up nicely as they have two straight wins, two straight clean sheets in this final stretch of the regular season, five games left. They're in fifth place right now. We'll of
course talk about what's next. A lot still to get to here on the postmatch show, I will also tell you that Sounders e f C Soccer is presented by Providence, Swedish official healthcare partner of Sounders FC. Moving right back here for the postmatch show on Sports Radio nine to fifty KJR AM.
You're listening to the home of Sounders FC Seles Sports Radio nine fifty KJR.
Welcome back to whom and Field where the Sounders took care of business tonight against Sporting Kansas City a two nothing win here tonight win that the SA goals from Jackson Reagan and Paul Rothrock. Who gets it sound for armond Quin Casino Play of the match. It's going to be the second goal that came off of the kid Paly prime time scoring in the fortieth minutes.
Those on the right inside hits the back of Rothrock's able to retain possession. Has it now one of the eighteen rolls towards the endline towards rolled On, who clips it towards Russ that top of the box throws a tee up a short this left foot brings it down to Quistion, rolled Off flips it back sweat headed.
Fuis walcome back to the nan assistant where Priest Black is not up.
Sounder cele pray and it's.
Ross Rock who adds again to his tally for the season.
Continues to impress and he puts the Sounders up to nil.
And the play of the match is presented by Emerald pin Casino, the betting capital of the northwest, and he says the flag stays down because sixteen minutes earlier there was a little bit similar play where it looked like the Sounders had scored, but it was ruled off side, and thus, thankfully the second one was not and poly prime time scoring again. And I think that the question that leads us into Calen Rowe is Paul Rothrock just continues to, you know, get cold contributions and be big
parts of these results over these last few months. Is his spot in the starting line and now completely solidified.
Kellen, I'll start with you, I think going forward it is at this moment it's his to lose, right. I think he hasn't had a bad performance. He hasn't had his best performances every game, but he hasn't had a bad performance, and that's what's going to keep you on the field. And what I like about this goal was started from him too. It started and ended with his work. Polly made a good run down the line, he found a way huff of his back to bring it down,
continued to play. As the quote unquote big stars were making their part, he was making sure to follow it up. And that is something that a role player, a player like Paul, a player that is going to stay in this lineup has to continue to do. If he doesn't continue that run, he doesn't get the goal and he's not on the field anymore.
Yeah, I think he does keep the job. I think we know what you're gonna get. He is going to really work hard, never give up on plays.
I think Brian Schpenzer said, you know that that this this season, when you're you're going through and doing a history of this season, Paul Rothrock will be one of the bright spots. And I think when the time the team was in the doldrums and struggling a little bit, Paul Rothrock's zest and energy and and never give up attitude kind of lifted other players around him. Young Christian rolled On was like that in his early years. A bit of nihativity maybe, but but still.
In a great way.
Relentlessness.
Yeah, that's a better word. And I think I think Brian appreciates what he brings. Now if all of a sudden, Peter de la Vega goes on fire, I think Kellen's right, it's it's Paul's jumb to lose, right, But he is certainly and what I love about him is whether his role is starting or coming off the bench. He's gonna come in and give everything he's got and he contributes.
He's he'll draw foul. I think he's got drawn two fouls for penalty kicks this season, So.
It's it's not even just a bright spot anymore. In the season, he was a turning point.
I think, very good season.
He was because a good point when he did start to play, we did become that bright spot of the team. You saw the team lift and all of a sudden go through that summer run of what was it ten or twelve games without losing. That's that's something that brings the team together and also pushes them from a non playoff position now to fifth place.
Right, And you're seeing that a little bit with Georgie, right, and that everybody gets excited for that kid on the field because he brings some energy and it does not quit.
Let's talk about Georgie because he does get the start in this team and he does go sixty six minutes before being taken off for Pedro dala Vega.
Big got opportunity for the kid. What do we think of his performance going overall? I think he's gonna be happy with his performance. He created a lot, He did some good things. He's got a lot to learn, still still a raw young player. But I thought he did well. I mean, I remember my first five minutes the ball, first pass I ever had underneath my foot, and I didn't remember the first five minutes of the game. This
was actually in San Jose back in twenty twelve. Don't worry about the year on that coach, But I think Georgie came in to himself a little bit. He started to get used to the physicality of having someone on his back and receiving the ball from a ya Mar with multiple players around him. And then you saw his bright spots when he got towards the box and he didn't.
Even look up.
He's going, I'm going at this guy, and that's what he's on the field for. Create something from the outside. Can you take a player one on one? If another player comes, can you find that open player? And I
thought he did a really good job of it. And as we continue to watch Georgie grow and you continue to see the players around him, every time he messed up, they were always on him like, hey, good job, do it again, yeah, no fall from us, do it again, Yeah, and I think that's something that's going to bring a young player into this team and create more possibilities.
I think he's not afraid to take anybody on, and he's proven he can beat people running right at them and getting in.
You know, he can tight rope along the touch line.
He is very strong physically and then with his pace, it's another dimension that teams will have to look at and say, hey, if this kid like Jordan Morris, right Jordan Morris, if he can go over the top if there's a high line. So it's just a little bit more quality in the final product, the final pass.
But I think he's going to be a bright spot for us.
As well well, sounder fans. Sound Transit would like to remind everyone to obey all signs and signals went around train tracks, light rail trans ait quiet and come in both directions, so stay aware and play it safe. Learn more about safety and security. I'm sound Transit by visiting soundtransit dot org slash ride dash with dash us. We'll say one more another break here on the postmatch show.
We have still lots to get to, including taking a look at what's ahead for the sounders, which we'll be coming up back here at LUMAN on Wednesday, I will continue reacting to the nothing win over Kansas City and looking ahead next on Sports Radio nine fifty KJR.
AM, you're listening to the home of Sounders FC, Seattle's Sports Radio nine fifty KJR.
Welcome back to the postmatch show from Bloomenfield, where the sun is setting on the stadium in Seattle tonight and the Sounders have won a game to nothing over Sporting Kansas City. Can I make any other words with while in this sentence? It is a very good evening here in Seattle as the Sounders move up to fifth place in the Western Conference with three points five matches left
in the regular season. Will of course spend some more time talking about what's ahead for the Sounders in our final segment of the postmatch show coming up in a few minutes, I will mention that this season, when the Sounders win, they have won today and you had to win tomorrow. So you can downlo the McDonald's app and redeem your free nick Chicken tomorrow with any purchase of two dollars or more at your local owned and operated at McDonald's restaurant. Down to the McDonald's up today and
check out the deals waiting for you. I want to talk about the midfield for a couple seconds, and for Albert Rusnak, I mean we were talking off the air. You know, this is the last year of his contract. Hopefully we see him back here next year. That would be great because twenty one goal contributions in Major League Soccer this year, he obviously has added quite a few more through the league's Cup action. He's been great and
today gets another assist on Rothrocks goal. Albert just continuing every single it seems, having a goal contribution.
Hey, look, he's a top player and he's what he's brought in to do. He was brought in to take over that number ten if and when Ladero was to leave, which he has and now Albert has fully stepped into that role. And you see it continuously throughout this year. He is the guy that people are looking at when they well, we need to score a goal.
Where is Albert? How can we find him the ball?
And when he does have the ball, you see Jordan Morris running off, you see Paul Rothrock running off, even sometimes Christian Rolldon from a deeper position running off. And I think that's the quality that Albert brings and the trust and the respect that he has from his other players.
You know, it was said by whether it's coaches or players, he finally gets.
To be in the position that he wants to be.
When Nico was captain and was here, he had acquiesce to Nico taking that spot right, And so now we're seeing him playing in his best position for his highest use, and he's he's now Nico's holds the club record of sixteen assists rusnecks on thirteen Mars all this in twenty eleven, twenty twelve, also at thirteen. I think he can tie and surpass Nico in the regular season, but we're seeing
him being so much more dangerous. Whether it's restarts, it's unfortunate on the penalty kick today, we could have used that. Timing wise, we could have used that as well. But now I like what he's doing and I think he looks to find Jordan Morris. He looks to spring wingers right. He can be selfish as a player and he can be selfless as a player, and I think he's kind of coming into his own this season like.
He was before we got him at RSL.
And I guess the freedom right, he's rolling around everywhere. He's finding Stott, he's coming back to find the ball off of Jackson Reagan or a Yay Mar He's he's finding himself on the wing and just creating space. But like you said, he's looking for these players that are running off and he's not one to go and beat four or five players, put the ball and chip the goalie. That's just not the roofsnack that we're used to and
that we've seen. But he's such a good quality passer, a great shooter on the ball and he gets a chance to actually pop a shot, and like you said, the service that he puts in, yeah, it's been incredible, and that's why he's had these thirteen cents.
He deserves an assist on the Jackson Reagan goal that Morris headed and then you got saved by Melia right that that service to Jordan's head was pinpoint perfect.
Yeah, and you know Fries our captain, and then I would go Christian Roldan, Oh, Yeah, but he could easily. Albert could easily wear the armband and there wouldn't be a player that would doubt that.
And I think it's the it is the respect that he gets from from the players, and that he that he also puts out on the field. You know, when he does lose the ball, he's usually one of the first guys running back. That that's something you want from your star player.
Yep, absolutely so well, we have to take a break, but I will quickly mention while we talk about the midfield, Christian roll Don in the holding mid field. I agree with our producer andrews Hurst and I we were texting during the game. He this is his best position and partnered with Obed Vargas, he was great tonight. He ran on his butt off up and down the field. Over All, those two were so good. They were very, very good tonight.
And Christian roll Don, I mean, this is where we see him at his best, when he has the ability to go both ends. And Christian had a heck of a day as well, both he and Obed and Obed of course came off the field as well in the seventy seventh minutes. So we'll we'll see what Obed Vargas could give you in a Wednesday game. Because the Sounders we'll be back right here on Wednesday against San Jose.
We're gonna take a break and talk about that, I'll quickly tell you that Talesa Airlines is probably donate one soccer ball for every mile ran by Sounders FC players this season through Ray Foundations one Mile, One Ball program. We'll wrap up the postmatch show and look ahead to what's happening on Wednesday. That's next on Sports Radio nine fifty kJ R.
A M.
You're listening to the home of Sounders FC, Seattle's Sports Radio nine fifty KJR.
Wrapping up the post match show. Here on Sports Radio nine fifty kJ R.
A M.
Jackson Feltz, Calenro, Pete Fewing here rocking, wrapping up a Sounders two nothing win over Sporting Kansas City. We're watching. It's a friends and family day here for Sounders FC and rain FC, as there is a good two hundred plus people, even only three hundred people on the field here emerone casino pitch at Loominfield, all having a great time. One hundred kids out here kicking soccer balls around, lots
of smiles. After a Sounders win today and a good time being had by all, this field will clear out again and be ready to go for a Wednesday, because the Sounders will be right back here at Louminfield on Wednesday for a match against the San Jose Earthquakes. It will be a Providence Swedish prematch show of seven o'clock and a kickoff of seven thirty. It will be right
here on Sports Radio nine to fifty am. You know, so watch the match via MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app and listen in Spanish like what John l Ray thirteen sixty and call on. That's one where I think Stephen Fries in his interview with Michelle earlier, that San Jose has been eliminated from playoff contention, but all those guys are still playing for contracts and that adds an entirely different motivation for this game on their side. But we used to do this back back in my day.
If you're eliminated from playoffs early, or you had that extra time, you would take two weeks after the season ended and that would be your time to either lose a contract or get a contract. And those practices were I don't know. If you went to any of these coach they were mayhem. It was chaos because everyone was going as hard as they can. They knew that their life was either going to stay here or their career
might be done. It was one of those unknowns that everyone kind of just put a little extra into it. And that's what this is going to happen here on Wednesday, in every game that San Jose plays. Now, on the flip side of that, if you get on top of San Jose quickly, similar to what you saw here was the eighteenth minute, nineteenth minute that we scored the goal. Here you see the deflation of this has been going
on the whole season. But for me, this is now that I don't have to be playing and think game by game and I'm up here and I can actually look at the whole next five games that we have around. Everyone is around us in the playoff position. I think San Jose is going to be like a last preseason game before you need to hearn it all the way on. I want to see not ten chances that are on goal and should be goals. I want to see ten shots,
ten goals. You need to have make sure that this is a final tune up before going into almost a playoff season. This has to be the last bit of the little rust that is continuing to go on. Because we're five games left in the season. These need to be goals. These need to be good at better tackles, These need to be easier saved. I mean, they needs to be a well rounded performance continuously, especially against teams that are no longer in playoff position.
Yeah, a shutout, jumping on them really early and giving them no hope that they're going to play, They're gonna play loose. Yes, I agree with Steph and with Killing that guys are playing for their contracts, their next ones. But there's no pressure on them for this game, right, So there's also they come in and sometimes that can
make them play better. Right, But if Seattle jumps on them, and I'd love to see a four nothing game, I don't even like saying that, because the Sounders have to get one goal and then they can getting a second goal. But this is really a game based on how many goals San Jose's given up.
A little more clinical in.
There and complete would be a great way to get ready for the next one.
So, but you can't look past them.
And as as Steph said, there's such parody in this league, those guys are gonna come in.
There's pride.
You're not a professional soccer player and not have pride, You'll have a lot of pride when you come in and you know Ian Russell's coming here.
He's the interim coach.
He's a West Seattle kid, played at the University of Washington. He's gonna want to do well for his team right when when he's come back home. So he played at Emerald City, right, and so you can't look past him.
But it would be great.
A Scale insays that just have a complete performance, get the goals, get a shutout, and then keep going and then and then if you can.
Get enough players, get enough goals, you can you can use your five subs to rest some bodies.
Number professionals. I don't like winning now. I don't like losing a pickup game. We're shuldn't like losing a co ed Monday night. Yeah, I still get angry about that stuff. I mean, you think these guys are coming into Lumen, you think that they're coming into Loomen. I know they're out of playoffs, but there's so much to play for because that that little bit of adrenaline, that little bit of a boost, that competitiveness of being a puresonal athlete being here.
You don't want to get embarrassed. And so the thing that that happens is you make sure you go Speaking of getting embarrassed, we totally said it's friends and family night. Brian Schenzer was just trying to defend what might be a four year old. The four year old just went right around Brian. Uh, Brian's lost a step.
He's sat on that fence for too long.
It's maybe he's because he's wearing a suit, but it's it's a tough moment. There is a four year old just took a ball right around him, and he can't keep up with the two year old and the catch right now running down the middle of the field. He just can't keep up.
Let me be honest with that runs like his father used to run.
You want to expand on that beat well on the other way around was running around. Oh here we go. Can you can Brian get by him? Brian one on one with the two year old. Ten bucks of meghem on the right foot, goes on the left. Bran gets around him. Oh but it's a heavy touch and the ball is given away to the two year Old's smart, two year old smart, he's making him run. Good tire tire the old man out.
Yeah, that's I'm disappointed. With it to be honest with you.
Tough scene, tough scenes for Brian Schmitzer. Great scenes for Brian Schmitzer on the field tonight as his team gets a two to nothing win over Kansas City, and it will be a challenge me two straight clean sheets? Can he? They make it three against San Jose? Coming up on Wednesday once again Providence sweetish premat show of seven o'clock kickoff of seven thirty. We'll have it for you right
here Sports Radio nine to d KJR AM. We will wrap with tonight's badcast by telling you that Brian Schmeenzer was just scored on by the four year old, So good job, Brian.
It does not affect the clean shoot, It doesn't.
Thankfully. I thank you and congrats to step and Fries second all time for ML's regular season shutouts one hundred and thirteen.
