They must defeat Visiting CF Monterey by at least three goals to have a shot to advance the knockout rounds, and they'll lead to mind their manners as they do it, as the fair play points tiebreaker may come into effect if this match does in fact finish three nail. I'm joined by Sounders legend Brad Evans Our prematch show and Brad my first question right off the top, coming off that three nail loss to RSL last weekend, right, Seattle really put themselves up against it. The three nail win by Monterey on the midweek over RSL makes things even more dire. What does Seattle need to do differently apart from maybe everything tonight. Well, look,

I think the third goal almost put the nail in the coffin. That was one that was a little bit gut wrenching for me because it's crazy how two nothing seems manageable and then three nothing seems like this is a final that we're going to have to overcome something miraculous, and it's just bizarre that one goal can kind of change your mindset. But I talked to Andy Rose this week and he said, look, we've had one other game in MLS where we

really played poorly. Now, look, the Sounders haven't been scoring goals, but they haven't been playing bad. It's just a matter of putting the ball in the back of the net. But this Salt Late game was a game where the Sounders played poorly once again, and you can have those throughout the season, but unfortunately this one came in a tournament where you have to win at least one game to find yourself through. So the guys it was a good week of training, I know that. And the guys are going to

be hungry with this one. You see the lineup that we're fielding tonight, They're gonna get after it. Brad. You know, every player and every club goes through kind of dry patches where maybe they're playing the way they want to, they're getting the shots, which, in fact, Seattle did outshoot oursl in that loss. They played the final thirty minutes of that match up a man and still finished three nil on the wrong side of the score line.

Do you just have to recommit yourself to the process and what the plan is. Can you create too much havoc if you try to change too much? Yeah, Look, with ten games left in the season, I don't think it's time to completely pull the parachute and see what's gonna stick. I think the guys have been pretty stout this year and how they want to play. Now it's a matter of just putting the ball in the back. Then, yes, did we outshoot Rail Salt Lake, but they weren't high quality

chances by any means. The past couple of games of Sounders haven't created high quality chances. I can't remember a game where I've been in here and I've heard the crowd ooing and awing for you know, twenty minute stretches where the Sounders were just doing everything right and peppering the goal. That it's been sparse

to say the least. And so I think tonight, if these guys don't come out hungry tonight and they don't show this crowd that they want this game, they want to win this game, then guys have to start making a different decision on how they see the last ten games of the season being played out with this veteran lineup that we're gonna feel tonight, just from your idea mentally, in your perspective on coming in again pretty much already down against it

two nails, so to speak, you need to get to three nail to make this a game and have a shot of going forward. Does that ramp the pressure up? Does it take some of it off? Can you play a little more freely knowing you just have to go out there and throw everything you got at them? No, Look, if we were playing a lesser squad, yes, but a matter of fact is is this a really good Monterey team, and it's a team that we've beaten here at home in years

past. We actually do really well against Mexican League teams in Seattle. So you have to score early. You cannot leave three goals to late. But we've also had games here where we've gone down one nothing and then scored two and three really late in games. I don't think that this Monterey squad is gonna give you that late in a game. They're just gonna sit back,

bunker and they know that they're through. We're just gonna throw five six guys in the back and make life miserable for the Sounders if they don't get one early. I don't think that the team can play freely in that respect because they will get caught by this Monterey team that has some fantastic players on their roster. And well, let's turn our attention now to this starting eleven for

both teams obviously will begin with the delta. Starting eleven for your Seattle Sounders, Brad Evans grinch Metzer has chosen a pretty familiar looking starting eleven for the night's Matt Yeah, Stephan Cleveland, and goal from left or right knew who Reagan yamar Alex rolled on the two sixes tonight, A Rusnak and shal Paulo so Obed getting a break, Morris Laedero Chew and Ruy Diaz up top.

So about as strong as a lineup we've seen all season. With the absence of Obed, obviously, you're seeing Rusnak as more of a true number eight that's gonna have to get forward and he's gonna have to imprint his game and be involved with Nico and Ruey up top. Joel Pollo wearing the captain's arm band tonight. Obviously this starter like eleven for the Sounders as kind of notable for who's not there as opposed to who is. Christian rolled on back into

concussion protocol. Obviously, we wish him the best, the speedy recovery at the club, not going to rush things. Stephen Fry underwent a finger surgery in the midweek to replace a dislocated finger that he's suffered in that match against RSL. Not expected to miss an extended period. Yeah, he'll be fine. Step will be back. I mean goalkeepers, you know, yeah, you use your hands, but the pinky you use a pinkie really, you

know. Actually I have seen Nick Romando's pinkies and they sit about ninety degrees to the left and right on his hands, so I guess they do use them quite a bit. But obviously the biggest glaring misk is Christian rolled On and it's it's it's just a it's a bummer to see him go down because he just brings something else to this roster that no other player does. I think he truly plays for the badge every single game and he leaves everything on

the line. If you want him to play right mid, he'll do it. He'll score goals, he'll provide assist, he'll cover. If you want to play number six, he'll play a number six at ten. He'll do anything for this club. And to have someone like that missing, someone on this roster is going to have to step up and provide that spark. Speaking of stepping up on the bench, we have a number of young players.

Andrew Thomas and Jacob Castro both available as reserve keepers. A Cody Baker, Read Baker, Whiting, Josh Tensio, Obet Vargus, Freddie Montario and a Bear and so Brad. You know, a pretty young looking brench We were talking to Brian Schmetzer yesterday after training and he was saying, you know, he wants to rely on the veteran guys and see if they've got the juice

to make something happen here at Luminfield to night. Yeah, Schmidtz said that a couple of times, like I'm gonna field a veteran lineup, and he said, this is your team right. Wherever these veterans go is where this team is going to go. I don't think we can rely on young guys on this roster to come in and play up top or play out wide and really provide the spark that this team needs. So it's going to have to come from veterans now. But you look at the bench right, young guys,

but not a lot of attacking young players at all. It's really up to Freddie and a Bear to come in and make a difference up top, or you start rotating guys in that front four, in the front five, depending on where this game goes and where the team is at after thirty forty five minutes. Brad, it feels almost silly to ask, because every soccer match ever hinges very critically on who scores the first goal. But it feels

like that somehow is amplified for tonight given to or line necessities. Yeah, it's massive to now you you that's the first thing I thought about when I went into the production meeting, which men said you have to score first when I saw him training yesterday. You have to score first. And we've come out here and scored early, and if you can, the crowd's going to be on your side, and that's the difference maker. To get one early takes the pressure off. Like you talked about, right now, you have

eighty seventy minutes to get two. That's that's doable, that's manageable. We know that this team in the Sounders is really good defensively. They've been very good defensively all year. They can keep possession. Now it's a matter of if you get one, can you get two and three? We haven't seen it too many times from this squad this year. That'll be the biggest test

for the Sounders coming forward. Well. Taking a look very quickly at the Monterey starting eleven een goals, Esteban Andrada, the back force, Bashi and Vargus Hector, Moreno, Victor Guzman and Erica Garay, the midfield, Joal Rojas, Omar Govea, Jonathan Gonzalez from Looking up Top, Maxi Meza, Jerman, Bertram and Rogeliounes More. We'll talk more about Montere in or next second, but they are a formidable side and his historic side as well.

Some street there between the sounders as well, Brad you we'll be able to speak to that as well as anybody on this club. But you know, always a great atmosphere. Welcome back in live here at Louman Field and on ninety three point three KJRFM, we are counting you down to kickoff. On our Sounders prematch show, Andrew Harvey alongside Brad Evans. Well that first segment we talked about Seattle coming into tonight's match backs against the Wall, just to recap the overview again. Because of the three team group stage nature, you only

play two matches in this group stage. The Sounders know what they must do to advance and at the moment that is win by at least three goals, and if they do happen to win nail, then this will come down to the fair play points tiebreaker. The good News Sounders currently slated to go through, So as long as they can kind of mind their manners and keep it relatively clean out there, if they happen to beat Monterey three nail, they're

going through the knockout rounds. Yeah, I think tonight is a bit of a numbers game, but you must play a clean game, and that'll be in the back of everyone's mind tonight. But the job must get done early. They said it in the first segment. They must score early tonight. And to have this group of veterans on the field, it's it's it's up to Nico, right, he didn't start the last game, so I hope he plays with a chip on his shoulder tonight and says, hey, this

is my position, this is my role. I must get the job done tonight. And we've had some fantastic matches against Monterey in the past, right, we beat them in Monterey one nothing might have been the biggest MLS win in Mexico at the time against the best team in Mexico at the time.

So we've had some classic matches and ones where you know, you think you're playing well and then all of a sudden, you know, Suazzo comes on the field back in twenty eleven to whatever it was and scores, you know, two or three goals in the snap of a finger, and they really show why this is one of the best teams in Mexico. Yeah, I'm onna ray it's such a historic squad in Lega mcki's history. They're one of the oldest out there, certainly the oldest in their part of the country.

They're in the north, also called Rayados, the striped Ones, and they were certainly convincing and looked almost historic in that three nil win over RSL on the midweek. They wound up getting outdueled, outshot out possessed, but they still found themselves up two goals to nail inside of a quarter hour. You know, they just came in. They know how to put pressure on you and Brad, as you've alluded to on several occasions, when they get a

window, they execute. Yeah. What I think is different about Mexican League teams and what we've faced here in Seattle. I think the turf was always the biggest difference maker. They always had a problem. There's only a couple of teams in Mexico that play on turf, and when they come in here, no matter how good they are with the ball, they're technically probably better than almost the whole roster of the Sounders, right because that's just the way

that they play. But the balance of the ball is way different. It's a different ball that they usually use in their club play. So we usually have the advantage. But where we don't have the advantage, they've already come in. They've gotten settled into playing in the US, right. They already even been here for eight or nine days they played in Salt Lake. They

seem calm, collected. Now can they come out tonight and if they start connecting passes, it'll be it'll be a long night for the Sounders and this team with the three up top, they will provide this Sounders defense with a

lot of problems things. Looking at this chart vision opponent outlook Monterey right now, they're currently second three matches played in the APERTUREA there in League MC, so it's early, but that's right in line with where they were last year finished top of the table in the Clause Era and they spent the final twelve

weeks of the season in that top spot. No one could dislodge Monterey at the top of the League MCKS table, but they lost in the semi finals of the playoffs against their arch rivals T Grace, who went on to win the Clause Era crown. They've got two just real stars up top, one who's been with the club forever and one who's been with the club for a little under a year. German bartser ramis the new arrival from San Luis and

twenty two ten goals, five assists and thirty one matches so far. And then funis Maury I mean as a talisman over two hundred and fifty appearances for Monterey, one hundred twenty goals. He had sixteen last year. Like you said, the Sounders defense is gonna be busy. Yeah, when you talk about their mount rushmore right, He's gonna be on it along with a couple other players. Suazzo one that we played with, and he shows his class

every single time. He plays a physical presence. He's just his ability to hold the ball, make the right run and that's what you find. You don't find too many players that play two hundred and fifty three hundred games in Mexico all that often, especially at big clubs, because they'll look to sell you. But it's a guy who's who's state disclaim in Monterey, and he shows why he is one of the best strikers, if not the best in I mean obviously other than Genyaki in t Grace, but how how good he

is and consistent he is. I'm excited to see Jackson Reagan specifically tonight, go up against him because I think Jackson can be and will be a top defender. And if you can come in here tonight and show him some problems, that gives him confidence moving forward to with the Sounders. So there's there's games within the game, right. We have this bigger picture game, but you also have the one v one battles that are going to happen on the

field. So I'm excited to watch that one tonight. Reagan was a guy who specifically talked about by Bryan Schmeetzer in our conversation yesterday as a guy who starting to try to learn a little bit more sort of the legacy of Chad Marshall here at the Sounders and how could he take the steps to become one of those defensive grades, although, as you alluded to, the real way to become a defensive award winners to score a bunch of goals on set pieces.

Yeah, you have to be that presence, and he's Jackson's working towards that. And I think it's we've talked about this on halftimes and post games, is the Sounders set piece play with these two guys in the back, with Reagan and Yamar, there's no reason why they shouldn't at least have between them ten goals a year from set pieces and just play off of each other. I think there's too much of just lofting the ball in and hoping,

Yeah, Jackson's tall, he's gonna get to it. But if you watch Chad Marshall's goals, they weren't because he was just so tall and he's jumping up above someone. He always made this extremely hard and sharp run. Right, he just bounces, he thinks you're asleep, and then he'll grab you by the jersey, rip you to the side, and at that point, if the service is right, he's attacking the ball at full speed and smashing the ball into the back of the net. So I don't want to see

too many lofted balls go in there, hopeful balls. I want to see good driven balls that Jackson can get on the end of and work with Yama as a pairing because they're so big, there's no reason why they shouldn't be getting on the end of crosses. Well, like you alluded to, Brad Seale's face Monterey on four occasions, all in the Conkey Calf Champions League, the last time over a decade ago, back in twenty eleven. They've never actually beaten them at lumin Field, but like you said, they beat them

on the road. You were on the pitch and the starting eleven for that match, And I'm just wondering what you can tell us about matches against especially Mexican opposition. Do they bring their own energy. It's easy to get up for a league rivalry when you know the guys and you really don't like them, But but is there something different about the energy that comes with starting one

of the lease Yeah. Well, first of all, it's it's a battle between MLS and Lega MX right now, and it wasn't there back in the day. So I think that MLS players, especially that team that we fielded to win one nothing down there. That was not a full strength lineup for US. There were a lot of guys absent from what would have been our full strength lineup, but their their lineup was one, they went for it.

We still won one nothing, and so I think we played with that chip on our shoulder going into those matches, and now I think we're in this battle right now where we're very very even. You know. I talked to Omar Gonzalez the other day and he's a guy that played in Mexico US national team and the Galaxy, and he faced timing. He said, look, I think top to bottom MLS is better now. The top four in Lega MX are are better than Major League Soccer, and we're talking about the

top four. These guys have been in the picture for the better part of a decade, so tonight'll be a massive test. But there is something about getting up to playing these teams. They seem very cohesive in the style that they play. Everyone's on the same page. And when you look at the Sounders right now, yes we keep good possession, but can we turn that into something tangible? And that's what Monterey has been able to do to be you know, first place in both Clusro and Apertura in Liga MX, and

so the gap is closing. But I hope that the guys still come in and play with that chip on their shoulder tonight again, a really really good Monterey side to night's opponent. Out of the starting eleven, who do you have your eye on? Yeah,

Nico Laedaro tonight. He's back in the starting lineup, back as your number ten. He's a guy that needs confidence and he needs a good game to finish out the last ten games for the Sounders, and this is a great starting I honestly think win loser draw. If Nico plays well, that bodes well for the Sounders moving into the latter part of the season. And if he doesn't have a good game, I think you probably see his head head

go down and dip a little bit. Because anytime you take a player in the lineup out of the lineup, oh, he's the captain He's not the captain that can kind of in your mind. As a player, you kind of get into your own head. So for me tonight, Niko's got to have a strong game for this Sounders team to push forward the remaining games for the MLS season. The great choice, Bratt, I'm gonna go with Steph Cleveland getting the nod to start in goal tonight. We know he's going to

be tested at some point as a keeper in a big time match. Can you come up with those one or who big time saves to give your team a chance to stay in it. We are counting you down to kick off here on ninety three point three KJRFM and live at Loumanfield Andrew Harvey alongside Brad Evans as the Sounders get set to play against CF Monterey fifth time in club history. They're one and three against them all time, and they must win by at

least three goals to have a chance of advancing. Here in the twenty twenty three Leagues Cup to the knockout rounds Brad right off the bat, right, we know that this is probably gonna be an electric match. The fans who

turn up for international matches for the Sounders have historically been rewarded. I'm thinking actually in particular of a penalty kick that a certain someone I know converted down at the north end against ceed Olympia, that that caused a bit of a hullabaloo, and just always always a great atmosphere here in the stadium for these

games. Yeah, look, I mean I go back to that moment, of course, the favorite moment of Champions League, but also you know, watching DeAndre a score from distance against T Grace here, watching Jimmy Triora hit a bomb from distance as a center back, and there's always something special about these games. We talked it, talked about it in the last segment. What does what does this bring? How did the guys get up for this? All you have to do is watch some highlights, and I hope that

Schmitz brought out highlights from previous Champions League games here at home. Just some fantastic goals and great results. Now one and three isn't isn't a tremendous record against this Monterey squad. But again, we're talking about two perennial powers and they haven't been real blowouts save for one game, and so we've we've always been in it, and so I think tonight is a chance for for the

Sounders to prove, especially coming off that last result against Salt Lake. They just did not play good and to know that they still have a chance tonight should provide this team come out a fast start. Like Schmidtz said, right, we have to get off to a fast start, and that's going to be the key for the Sunders tonight bred any other particular keys specifically to that

first quarter hour twenty minutes. What do Seattle need to Do they need a goal that early in the match, or do they just need to start generating chances? Yeah, I think ideally you get a goal in the first fifteen twenty minutes. If you don't, then then Monterey is going to be happy to sit back and see out that first half until halftime. Right the game

within a game, it's forty five minutes at a time. If the Sounders don't get any high quality chances, Monterey has got to feel good then they can go in a halftime nil nil, change some things tactically, and then they'll probably come out even more defensive. But like Schmitz said, we're gonna come out and fly from the beginning, so expect this Sounders team to go

and go and go. At the same time, he said, we have to be very good defensively, so it's up to new Who and Reagan and Jimar to sit back there and provide that cover, which they do really well already. But have they faced a group like this in Monterey? I don't think so, although Salt Lake did punish them. But if the Sounders play well tonight, I don't see any reason why this group can't score within the fifteen or first fifteen twenty minutes of this game, and they cannot lead themselves

exposed at the back while doing that. In your mind, how early do you think you might see Monterey starting to close up shop? Because the Sounders know what they have to do, but so to Monterey, and all they have to do is not lose by three goal. Looks, every single ball that goes out of bounds they're gonna walk to. Whether it's the first minute of the game or the ninety first minute of the game. They don't care. They're happy to slow the play down. They're gonna put their foot on

the ball every challenge. They're gonna sit over the top of the ball, They're gonna roll around, They're gonna waste time, right because all those little moments add up to five to six minutes probably throughout the entire game. And if you can get rid of that. The way that the Sounders do that

We are here for the next ninety minutes to break this thing down and hopefully be talking about a Sounders win of three plus goals and Pete. That is where we start today. The daunting task after what happened Wednesday between Royal saw Awake and Monterey where Monterey picked up a three nothing win over the team that beat the Sounders three nothing. Now leaves the Sounders in a difficult position. Well, they know what they have to do. That's it's very,

very clear. And the energy in the stadium today is great. Monterey certainly has great backing. We were on the backside of the press books when Monterey came out and there was a great roar. So the energy the crowd. I see a nineteen seventy four banner in the in the ECS end zone, which is just great to see. So the stadium looks terrific. Sounders know what they have to do. I talked to Sounder legend Tommy Jenkins today and he said, Seattle's got to score first and get the crowd behind him.

We need to get that energy in the building that we've seen before in the Champions League Final or the MLS final. The crowd's gonna play a factor and putting this team forward, and we've got the guys on the field to do it. We've play a factor from both sides. We see the visiting fans from Monterey and they are here in large numbers. With t fo's with about I don't know about two dozen banners. Yeah, there is a large contingent

of Monterey fans. This will be a loud match from both ends, both from ECS to the northeast corner of the stadium where all of the Monterey fans are lined up. But we spoke to Brian Spencer yesterday and he said exactly what you did. It's about emptying this tank, you know, it's about making sure they go forward, but they're not reckless. And with that, let's take a look at the delta starting eleven for your Seattle Sounders tonight.

It is Stephen Cleveland in goal tonight. Cleveland is starting because Stephen Fry is out. Earlier, or I should say last game, he dislocated his pinky finger. Try to put it back in himself, didn't go in properly, so it was forced into a procedure that happened earlier this week. It was a successful procedure, not expected to be a long term thing for Stephen Fry,

but he is out after that pinky finger procedure. Stephen Cleveland, the six two twenty nine year old from Dayton, Ohio, starts in goal for your Sounders. The back four stays the same from it was last week knew who of Cameroon? Is that your left back spot in Alex Roldan of Seattle University at the right back spot, Jackson Reagan next to Jamar Gomez Andrade.

They are your center backs. You're holding midfielders today Albert Russnach next to Jual Polo and should be noted Dual Polo as the captain's arm band for tonight's match. You're attacking midfielders from left or right. We have Leo Chio on the left, Nicholas Fladero in the center, and Jordan Morris is gonna be on the right side tonight with ral Rudy as up top and Pete viewing. That's about as good of an eleven as you could wish for in a game where

you need three plus goals. Well, here's the deal. We need that service from the flanks, and we certainly have that possibility with Morris and Chew and if Realidas can you find those gaps inside the box, inside the six yard box, if he can be lurking and Nico can come underneath them, there's great opportunity. And the guys know, you know, I'm just talking to Brian earlier in the week, and he said, oh, we need our big money guys to play well today. There's a lot of talent on

this team that has, in their words, been underperforming. This is a great opportunity games like this, like you said, all these tifos out here in the great support that Monterey has brought with them, beautiful day in Seattle, the shades over the field, so it's not sweltering hot. It's a great opportunity for our Sounders to really get a jump start in this competition, but also for the rest of the MLS season as well. That's absolutely right.

As we see the Sounders and Monterey taking the field, Sounders will be attacking the North end here to start this match, which means they will be attacking the Prome end in the second half. As we get things here underway in just a moment, the referees making their way out to the center circle, and you know, we look back at the history between these clubs. You know, obviously Sounders have great history against Mexican sides here at Lumen Field.

We talked to Prian Schpenzer exactly sure why even he doesn't know why specifically the Sounders effect such success against Mexican sides. Here at Lumanfield, but that has been the case. We look specifically to Monterey four times these clubs have met all in CONCACAF Champions League. We go all the way back to two thousand and ten and two thousand and eleven where these teams matched up. We look back in twenty ten, Monterey took both legs two nothing in Seattle,

three two in Mexico. The following year they split them. Sounders won a leg one nothing, but then they lost also two to one, and the Monterey moved on in both of those rounds. It should mention though, the two to one game that they had in twenty eleven. Freddie Montero scored the Sounders goal here in twenty eleven. He is on the bench for Seattle today as we get things going here in just a moment, we have Rodrigo fu fumes more over the ball and he kicks things off as we are underway from

Lubin Field. Emerald Queen Casino Pitch playing host to this league's Cup group stage match, where the Sounders need to win at least three nothing or at least by three goals in order to move on. Here. In the two thousand and twenty three leagues upcause Rollo Udias is taken down just outside the boxing, that will be an early foul long ball the Rolluidias, and that will be

a yellow card. Instantly. We are twenty five minutes seconds into this match and we've already seen a yellow card come down as roller Rudia has taken down Pete Viewing just about a yard outside of the box. A great header from Alex Roldan right to Ruidiaz and he was certainly taken down and it's a great chunk start a gets everybody going. Rollo took it right in the ribs. You can see him holding his ribs right now. But we're just on the

right side of the box, maybe twenty one yards out. Could be Nico, could be Rui Diaz. But this is a good start for Seattle. I like nest of header from Astrol Don and write two real ideas going right at the back of one man to beat and the yellow card was justified. It was indeed, and as we take a look at this, both were both the Albert Russnach and Nicholas Ladero standing over this ball. We'll see who takes it here. Only just over a minute into this match, here as

Varoli Diaz went down and threw himself at yellow. This is the aggressiveness that Brian Schmitzer wanted to see early in this match. Here we go, will be Nico, will be Albert to take this one from just a yard outside the box. Sounders look for an early goal. Here, here's Nico over it. He takes it. It's a lobby shot. He ends in the back of the act. Nicholas finds money in the beach and the second minutes and the Sounders, who need three plus nights, get an early one.

Nicholas Ldero, the legend for Seattle, scores it and just like that ball, Lady that it's the one we needed right off the bat. Well, you couldn't ask for a better scenario. It was messy at Miami in his first game, in the last minutes of stoppage time to put that one on the back of the net. And you know what, I didn't want to say anything when they were lined up on the ball, And for those listening at home, I think everybody was just kind of grasping, gasping for a

moment to see what would happen. What a fantastic near post and dry no chance here comes Monterey down the rough side, across coming over Morey the header and that just wide right. Oh funis Moray on the counter? That just happened right off the kickoff, and it looked like Monterey was gonna get one back, but Morey heads it just wide of the net, and we are

as we expected to be back and forth here Pete viewing. We knew this could get like this sort of a game where things are back and forth as the Sounders have to push for three plus goals, and just from the first as we see on the clock two minutes and fifty two seconds, we are seeing that back forth play. Yeah, both teams want it, you can all. I was driving in today thinking this could be one of those games that we mark on the histories of the Seattle Sounders as one of those great

games that certainly started out the right way. I'm sure Brian Schmetzers was thrilled. And for Nico Lanaro, who sat out the last one, for him to come in and you said, doesn't have the captain's band on, and that was by design. We got the little word that that was to take some pressure off him or interrupting years knew who mix his way into the final third off that left side, and he has a ball just interrupted as a Sounders will pop out and will be monerate controlling the long ball that will be

easily taken by Yamar Gomez and Drade and he stepping Cleveland falls down. Cleveland has to kick it just out for a throwing. Oh my goodness, step In Cleveland comes on trade with a simple back pass and put step In Cleveland fell down and had to quickly get back up and send that out for a Monterey throw. play. Monterey here working and looks like they will have a ball roll out for a Sounders throw deepen their own end of the field. This is currently

Here at Emerald Queen Casincio Emeral Queen Casino pitch of Lubin field where Nicholas Ladarol in the second minute hit a beautiful free kick goal Allah Messi with Miami a couple of weeks ago and the Sounders got that early goal they need in a game where they must win by three plus as Nicholas LAEDARII trying to ship the keeper from about thirty five yards out.

Just a little bit of a mistake by the thirty two year old Esteban Andrada, an Argentinian international who has been playing here with Monterey since twenty and twenty one, an exceptional six or four goalkeeper, but Nicholas Laedaro nearly chipped them from thirty five outpeats oh man, Yeah, Andrade just hit it right to him. Niko once that back and went about five yards. I holy

call. That would have been a tremendous start. What I love to see in Jordan Morris running down the middle of the field, which I think if he can come from that right side and get into the middle, he's gonna open up some things. And the Sounders now working on the left. Here's Leo Chi crossing it over. He is a back post and it's Jordan Norris. Jordan Norris catches it's and Morris gets to Sounder second goal. Six minutes

in. It's two nothing Seattle and this game just gun very very interesting as Seattle needs only one more and they are right back in this for League's Cup two and twenty three. Two goals in the first five and a half minutes Nicol on the free and then Jordan Header at the far post. My oh my pete viewing the Sounders right now have the two they needed a lot sooner than anybody expect. The Hall, no question, you couldn't script it any

better, and it's just what we want. Shoe with a picture perfect cross, Jordan Morris getting on the end of it, knowing the situation, runs and grabs the ball, not messing around with any celebration. They got to get another goal and the Sounders have possession. Right back in the midfield, there's Albert Russnack and he will take it easy and send it back to Jackson Reagan as the Sounders now have eighty four minutes to get one more. Here

we go. He's just got very interesting as news here on the left side. He's now working in the middle of the park. New now out to the left for Leo Chew, Leo Chow working down that left wing. He has Nicholas Lado Ladaro lacrosse that's cleared away by Monterey to al Paulo retains it though and able to keep a Sounders throw. Here's new to throw this ball in a Seattle. He needed to win by three plus and they currently lead

three too. What a start here tonight, a looming field as Joe Paulo will try to cross the field, but that's interrupted in Monterey taking it back on the transition. They are so dangerous on the counterpeat as we saw on Wednesday. And here we go again, the Sounders doing a good shop of getting back quickly defensively. Now Leo Chew gets in front of the ball.

Now over on the right side, there's a gear Ay from Monterey who's now kind of just working it back, playing some simple passing Jonathan Gonzalz and all the way to the back to Victor Guzman Pete viewing. But that counter that Lara is so good at just completely disrupted. A good job by the Sounders there, that's what we are concerned about. You watch the RSL game. They're very good on the counter. Right now They've got five high up long

ball here to the right side, and that's gonna read to Gearrey. He's on New and New is letting him go. Nowhere is Monterey have to bring it all the way back out again. Go ahead, Yeah, I think that you and I both talked about it. It's there. It's their counter attack. But Seattle, to your point, did a great job again. Numbers behind the ball. on that right wing. He'll cross it in it gets to Gamma, Gomez Andree and gertz Arami lays it off, fall into the box, headed to buy Jackson Reagan back out to leo Cho. That's Jordan Morris's tenth goal in all competitions, and you want Nico Ladero to be as lively as he has now as Monterey working down the left side, now looking for an option now central long shot in that is, well, why to the goal? Stephan Cleveland's able to just box that sail to the right, and honestly, if if that's their best chance is taking a long shot from Duel Rojas from

about forty yards out. Seattle will take that every day of the week and it'll be a goal kick for Stephan fry As He'll send this up ont of the right for Alex Roldan. Now Alex long balled Jordan Morris. Can he get onto the end of that one? He cannot, as kicked out for a Sounders throwing about fifteen yards from the end line. People, I like the pressure that Seattle's putting on him. Used Jordan Morris speed, Alex Roldn plays it down and hey, Monterey just has to kick it out of bounds.

The left back Vegas just gets rid of it. So that's the kind of pressure they want to keep applying. Rowan goes to roll and roll back to Jual Paula working on the right side. Dual centrally now and Dual Paulo looking to get some help. He'll have to send it back to Jackson Reagan just at the edge of the center circle has help with new and new crossing all the way to the right side for Alex Roldan Alex, he finds some space for a cross. They'll come inside to Dual Polo working in that right

pocket. Now back out to the right. Rolex rolled On tries to slip a ball into Albert Rusnack, but it's cut out from Monterey and they'll be on the counter and a foul called on Jackson Reagan. I'm not sure it was much of a foul, to be honest, but I like that he's aggressive. I like what this team is right now, everybody's sharp moving the ball quickly, knew who changing the point of attack from left to right.

Well, don try and hit that penetrating pass. It's good or after the great start when we talked about and especially with Grime Smezer talked about how they need to be aggressive without being reckless, and we have seen that in the first ten minutes of this Matches into the box from Monterey looking for a shop and his lost wildly lost there from midfield there from Monterey and the Sounders get it back. He has three appearances of the Mexican national team just this year. Ladaro sends it in again once again, that's cleared away from Gouzbon, back out to knew who here on the left side where he will have a throw in at fifteen yards from the halfway line.

Chu will get that, but Che just touches it at a bounce and now Monterey will have a throwing from deep in their own n beat RSL had a lot of good chances in the game. They hit the post several times. Arango was very, very good, and that one Reuben was good Savoino. They had chances. It was not just a three nothing thumping from Monterey and Seattle is putting them under tremendous pressure, relentless in going forward. It's wonderful to see they just built

out of the back as well as I've seen them do all year. The Sounders take the ball away and throwing from Monterey was controlled, and then quickly a takeaway from Jackson Reagan and Seattle back in possession. Now with the game a Gomez Andrade Sounders leading to nothing. Here, I'm a cre Casino pitch at lewin Field, the match where they need to win by three plus goals. There are already two thirds the way there a second minute ago from Nicholas

Ladero and Jordan Morris. Soon after its bo choose now attacking down the left side, cross comes over, not able to get any foot behind, it will go all the way to the Monterey left back at Sebastian Vegas, and Vegas will be able to keep possession. Now from a moment with Monterey as he gets sitting into the middle of the park with Jonathan Gonzalez back down to

Espanatrata, I think Monterey Peteeing certainly want to settle this game down. From the wild first ten minutes that we saw, Yeah, they have not gotten their bearings at all and then they certainly are better than the way they're playing, but that's stude to Seattle's pressure. The ball movie now off onto the left side here for Monterey, essentially now coming back to the front. But a good defensive unit for the Sounders are packed tight and they're not letting any

holes through. Let's see if Monterey can find a lay Burt's arame over on to the right wing here for a gear Ay. Geary cuts in on new hoop and sends it all the way to the other side of the field. Now a little chip from the middle of the park, and that's from Omar Govea, and Govea will hit this one. Yeah, it's about Chuck wille nowhere close to goal and the Sounders leading two to two to nothing here fourteen minutes into this matchup in Fueling. Yeah, it's a good layoff in Govea

probably once that one back, but he's skied it. No question. You could tell that there was anticipation of a much better shot than was coming. Stephan Cleveland will send this ball along to Alex Roldan on the right side. Go on with some space, we'll keep this in. Great ball from Cleveland, Uh, great ball from Cleveland and a lot the Monterey players. We're calling that that ball went out, but Alex did a good job to keep

So, for my money, stay healthy the last month of the regular season, last couple of months, and if you're healthy come November, this team is going to be a hard, hard out for any other squad, including the top teams like an Lafcat or a Saint Louis City. Any team is going to have a very hard time with a healthy Seattle Sider. Yeah, there's a DNA in this program that has

won some very very big trophies, big Cups. But they will have to read group, They will have to look at themselves in the mayors, and they're gonna have to as as a whole as players and coaches, they're gonna have to say, Okay, how are we gonna effectively use this next twenty days? Twenty days won't make them better unless they put the work in it. You know. Sometimes in the college game, you see a guy go from sophomore to junior year, they don't get better just because they're a year

older. So these twenty days are going to be very important, some serious soul searching. You are correct, though, this is a team that has talent, experience, leadership, but it's just got to get back on track. They're do indeed, So we'll see what the health situation is a few

And then unfortunately it just unraveled and giving up that goal, the second goal right before the half was a bit of a difficult a bit of a dagger right, and then to give up an early goal the beginning of

the second half to go down three two. They made it an uphill applying the entire way. And so again I'm I'm curious what that locker room is going to be like because this is very very disappointing for the squad. They've wanted to do better in it. Having said that, they've got to throw behind him after a couple of days, they've got to use this twenty days wisely to get healthier and get better and come out ready because that Atlantic team's

going to give Seattle all they got to ask for. So tough night for the Sounders and disappointing because they want to do better in this competition. As so be feeling great to be with you. It was a rip roaring start for Seattle Sounders FC tonight against CF Monterey in the final match of the group stage of the twenty twenty three League's Cup, but unfortunately Sandle came up on the short end of the stick four to two overall agains. Seattle needed to

win this match by three goals just to advance. Welcome into our postmatch coverage live here from Lumanfield on ninety three point three KJRFM Andrew Harvey alongside Brad Evans, and it's time now for the Emerald Queen Casino Play of the match, and there's there's little surprise. It was Nico Lodero's magic moment. Less than sixty seconds into the contest, Sounders look for an early goal. Here here's

Nico over in. He takes it the lobby shot, he finds money in the back in the second minutes and the Sounders, who need three plus tonight, get an early one. Nicholas looked out the legend for Seattle stores it and just like that call, baby, it was the one we needed right off the bat Let's play the matches presented you by the Emerald Queen Casino,

the betting capital of the Northwest, and Brad. It really felt in that moment this club has done so many magical, almost impossible things over the years, and you could really feel the energy that people were ready for that to happen again. After that first yeah, I mean, the crowd came out tonight and they were on fire as well, and I think that start should have signified a Sounders win through and through. We don't exit this game without

a victory. I don't care if it's one nothing, two nothing, three nothing, or if it's six to five. But the Sounders needed that win to push them into this break. And to see them walk off the field at halftime so dejected of all the effort put in in the first thirty minutes of that game is really disappointing. And you saw them walk off the field after the game shaking their heads, trying to figure out what went wrong and how did it go wrong so badly tonight. I just feel that that start

should have set them up for success tonight in every facet. The crowd was

behind them, the players were energized. You get another one after just a couple of minutes, and then the crowd is even more into it, and so credit credit to the fans for sticking here and sticking it out, and it's unfortunate to leave them again with another loss, leaving the stadium with a third of the season gone and now a twenty one day break until this team will play again here at Luminfield. Well, you mentioned that that second goal.

Just moments later, Jordan Morris gets on the end of the cross from the left alley from Leo two makes it too nil. All of a sudden, Seattle's pretty much just a goal down in this contest, and then from there it takes till the half hour mark for Monterey to find their first. Bert Haram had a ball in on the inside, close shot, rebound, follows it up, taps it home stoppage time penalty kick. It's a close call, but it is the right call to give the penalty for that there.

Bet Arami puts it away, no question. He finishes it hat trick for the fourth goal of the game. But really you have to feel like that dagger is Jordy Cortizo, the second half substitute, coming on two minutes into the second half and just putting one in to make it three two in Seattle at that point, you know, needed to get four goals back. Yeah, at that point the Sounders were out of it, but you're still playing for pride at that point. And I don't think that they put all

their effort tactically in the second half that they needed to. I think guy's heads were down, and you know, it's hard as a player to know that you're probably not going to score four goals in a second half and come out of here and win this thing. But the effort should still be there, the passes should still be there, and playing the way that you're supposed

to play the game should always still be there. And you make a sub with Leo, two comes off, and then you kind of move some guys around, and at that point you figure, okay, we're gonna play all of our young guys from here on out. We've thrown in the towel.

But on both goals in the first half, that withdrawn striker as he plays pert rome really cause you know, the two center backs from Seattle problems tonight, and it happened on multis happened on the third the fourth goal as well, and the third goal too, where Ortiz comes in, there's a withdrawn striker. Both of the center backs just keep dropping, dropping, dropping. He picks up a ball at the top of the box and smashes at home to make it three two. And that is a big question mark for me.

As good as this Sounders team has been, who's going to be the guy back there that's gonna step up and make a challenge. I don't care if you fall him on top of the box and you take a yellow card. I'd rather have that than him run free top of the box. Both of our center backs are three yards deep in our own eighteen, and at that point it's it's you know, it's one against the keeper. At that point, he's got a free shot from the top of the eighteen. He

smashes at home. So some questions to be asked about the defending tonight, you know, and then the Sounder's effort in the second half. You know, you're probably not gonna Roel hits the post, and things just weren't going the Sounders way, and so it's it's it's just an overall disappointing night.

And what do you say to the guys in the locker room. It's you have twenty one days off to Schmidz, go in there now and light them up, or is it okay, I'm gonna play this one cool and say, okay, you guys are gonna take four days off, get your minds back. We're gonna come back in the second third or the third third of the season and say we're gonna have a second preseason for two weeks and we're gonna work you guys, and you're gonna be fitter than every other team that

we play, and you better. You're probably gonna feel a veteran lineup, and if you guys don't get the job done, then we're gonna have to start making some changes. Brad, I'm sure over the course of your career, whether it was with the Sounders or not, you've played in matches that maybe started to feel a little bit like a lost cause. Tonight, the Seattle had a long way back to go, even as soon as Monterey pulled level going into half. I'm mentally, what is the sign of a championship caliber team that's able to ride through the brakes and even if you're not able to get the result you need? What what do you

see out of those teams? Did you see any element of that tonight? And what can the Sounders try to take away from this? Yeah, you know, with a championship team, things just tend to go the right way. Right. Raoul shot at the end goes in. Nico has one from distance that you know the keeper's caught off his line in years past, he might, you know, somehow find a way to loop that ball into the back of the net. Defensive plays, you're often making the right decision in

the back. You're making crunching tackles, You're you're making a statement. That statement wasn't made by Jackson until he picked up a yellow card in the seventy fifth minute. I'd rather see him pick up a yellow card in the first five minutes of the game and say, hey, we're here to play, and I'll take a yellow card now, because I know I'm a good enough defender and I'm confident enough in my game over you know eighty plus minutes that

I'm going to set the tone for this one. Guys are gonna follow my lead. And it goes back also to Nico. I mean, he's the captain, He's the guy who needs to control the pace of the game. The Sounders go up to nothing, now the third goal doesn't have to come for another seventy minutes, so we don't need to go a million miles an hour and try to get it in the first half. Put your foot on the ball, play it back to the keeper, because I know the flip

side of this. If Monterey is up to nothing, they're gonna put their foot on the ball, They're gonna play it to the keeper. They're gonna knock the ball around. Really control the tempo and then wait for the right moments to attack. I think we got a little bit ambitious in the first half, thinking we had to get the third one before the halftime break, and we sent too many numbers forward and then we got caught because we know

we talked about it pregame. Monterey is such a good counterattacking team. How many times you see their goalkeeper pick up the ball, throw it thirty yards and a striker or a midfielder's dribbling it and they end up in our own eighteam. You don't see that very often, and that's a sign of a

dangerous team. And it just happened too many times tonight, while you're listening to the Sounders FC postmatch show, again they wind up on the wrong end of a four to two result against CF Monterey here in the twenty twenty three League's Cup. You know, outshot pretty level on possession, managed to get

five shots on goal against Monterey's nine. Passing accuracy looked pretty good on the border of eighty six percent crosses. You start to see the differential twenty one to six in favor of the visitors from Mexico duels one forty four to thirty seven. Obviously, the stats never really can tell you the full picture of a match, and I think you mentioned it perfectly, where with great teams they just have a way of getting things done, and the Sounders seemed a

little snake bit out there. Yeah, I think I think Raoul is a little bit behind the eight ball right now. I mean, if you look at the chance in the first half where he's put in by by Nico and he decides to cut the ball back instead of taking a strike on goal, maybe putting it through the keeper's legs, and then the Sounders are in a

pretty good position going into into second half. You know, I finally got to watch the replay of the fourth goal, and what I mean by effort is I think it's a set piece for the Sounders and there's a ball cleared and Yamar is ten yards in front of the eventual goal. Scorer Brits Rame and he outruns him the entire field and it's just pure effort. It's worst case scenario at that point. And that's what I can't stand is I want

you in this. I don't care if you rip your hamstring off the bone, but you need to be on a flat out sprint if you have a ten yard advantage on someone to get back there and make your defensive play. And that to me is effort and heart and playing for the badge, like I'm gonna do everything I can as a defender to keep that ball out of the back of the net. And so that kind of signified the mental state

of the team. And that's only the sixty seventh minute, sixty eighth minute, maybe even earlier than that, and at that point they probably weren't going to score four goals again, but that's the effort that you want to see and the fans want to see at the end of the day. And to see someone outrun you for the entire length of the field that and you have a ten yard head start on him, that's unacceptable to me, and that's

got to be addressed in the locker room. Was there a moment in that first half where you saw something switch or shift, because again, it was such a picture perfect start for Seattle, you couldn't have dreamed of it better. Right, two goals up to nil six minutes in, and then it just felt like something change. I'm curious if there was anything you noticed. But Montere started getting on the ball and starting building up those attacking Well,

look, Monterey is a really good team. They're not. They weren't in first play in the Clouds Tour and winning that title last year. This past season for no reason. They're not in first place right now, for no reason. They didn't win this group for no reason. They're a really good team. But the Sounders showed that at home under pressure, that they could score goals, and you were always going to have to have a massive defensive

effort. Schmittz talked about it yesterday. We have to be so solid defensively because they are so good, this Monterey team and clinical. And there was a shift when I mean it was only when they scored. I'm okay with them taking shots from you know, twenty five thirty yards out. I think

Steph can cover those, but it was that one cross. We're not tracking our runner into the box, and then it's a deflection and we're not turned around and in the right position to clear that ball, so it's a fortunate goal for Monterey. And then from everything there, you know, your mental state as a sounder is like, oh, you're so deflated at that point. You put so much effort into the first thirty minutes and now you have

to fight back and score, you know, another three goals. At that point, we're here looking at the aftermath of Seattle's two to four loss against CF Monterey here in the twenty twenty three Leagues Cup. loss tonight to CF Monterey in the twenty twenty three Leagues Cup. As they look, it's about three weeks out down the line, so that upcoming match against Atlanta Braden As you take a look at this one you've been on you know the right side of results, the wrong side of results. The wrong ones can stick with you, especially one like you said that that went as wrong as tonight feels like it went at times for Seattle. Coming into such a long layoff as a player, how do you manage this? Do you

sit with this one for longer than normal? Do you try to get over it faster? I've never had a layoff this long enough. The only layoff this long I've ever had is probably the off season heading into a national team camp. And the reality is of being at a good club. You always played late into November, sometimes the first week in December, and then those camps start January first. So the only thing you can do now I've never

experienced this is put your head down and work. If you're going to be at this club for a long time, it's okay to take four or five days off here, but then you better come back and be, you know, extremely fit and be doing double days for the first week heading into the final part of the season. So hopefully this allows guys like Jalpolo specifically to get a break right. It's a guy that we have to give some credit to and kudos because he's probably not playing as well as he wants to right

now. But he had a traumatic injury, right He had an ACL injury, and then he had an early start to the season, really an expedited preseason heading into Champions League and then straight into the league. So this give him a time him some time to get a break, and the other guys to, you know, really look back and evaluate. You can't hang on this loss too much, but you can't look back, and maybe you watch some tape and some games from earlier in the season and just sit down and

force yourself to watch yourself play. That's the hardest part about being a players, is just watching yourself play when loser draw right, It's it's always a tough one because every time you watch it's, Okay, I should have done this, I should have done that. But hopefully the guy's taken opportunity here to sit down and watch some games. What they did well, what they didn't do well. You can't dwell on this one too long. You know, it's a new tournament. The guys put in effort tonight, not the

effort in the second half that I wanted to see. So they'll have to watch themselves play and at the end of the day. That's that's how you get better. But it also maybe it's a captain saying, Hey, we're gonna have a barbecue at our house. Everyone's coming over to the house. Don't think about soccer. Let's just all hang out and take our minds off. Right with my high school season this year, we had a big break. We had two and a half weeks off, almost almost nineteen days,

and the guys came back and they were bickering at each other. We had two bad results. Craig and I said, hey, we're not going to go to practice today. We're just gonna watch a movie Step Brothers, and we're gonna eat some pizzas. And then we went undefeated the rest of the year. Sometimes all it takes is one person to bring the whole group in and say, okay, let's get back to being a collective unit here, and then the guys are back on the on the right page and where they

want to be ultimately. Well, like Brady, as you said, it is going to be a long layoff for Seattle Sounders FC. There next back at home against Atlanta and night it on Sunday, August twentieth.
