SEC postmatch show Sounders FC Sucker is brought to you by Providence, Swedish official healthcare partner of Seattle Sounders FC. The Sounders FC postmatch show starts now. Welcome back in. I sighed pretty loudly before that started. I don't think my mic was on yet though, so I think we're good. You didn't get to hear me exasperatedly. SI, um, very tough start to Leagues Cup. Unfortunately Sounders fall to Real Salt Lake three nil. I am here

with Mas Monday eight and head coach Pete Vieeling. I will always call you head coach Pete always, thank you. I know he's still with Seattle. You as what an athletic assistant athletic associate athletic associate Social projects. Thank you very much, thank you very much. But I will always just call you thank you always. I'll take it. Thanks. Uh So I started the postmatch show with a SI, how are you guys feeling? Um? SIUs SIUs, just in the way that I'm sure Brian Smetze will be disappointed.

I think that, you know, uh coach said it doing the broadcast, that you know, losing this tough on a coach what's worse is how you lose, you know, And I thought that the self inflicted wounds is what would be disappointing for this team. So yeah, and to give up a third goal late like that on a long ball, that just kind of switching off for a second. I think there's a lot of questions for this team right now. We've you know, that's it's it's been a team that's done

incredibly well in the last few years. Uh. It's a team that since two thousand and nine has more points than any other major league soccer team. Uh, you know, in total, I think New York's behind him by about thirty or forty now. But but right now there's some questions, right what where are we? Um? Where where are we going to get? Uh? Where are we going to get goals from? They've got a lot of shutouts a level and this year, but giving up three goals at RSLs

not not what they want. And I think they're trying to figure out who's going to lead UM and and you know, I look at it sometimes, you know, man management, it's very very important. They've had injuries, they've had national team call ups, they've had lots of games and short windows, um quite a bit of travel as well. And and right now, you know, they got to they've got to find a second win. They've got to find us another gear. Uh, and they've got to go make

something and they've got to have some fun. Right now. That is not a happy team, right it's uh, it's going to be very quiet in the locker room. And um, you know, sometimes in a locker room like this, you'll have guys throwing shoes and getting upset and screaming at each other and all that. Right now, it doesn't feel like they have that

kind of energy. So they've got to go find it. And there's only so much a coach can do. Um, there's there's tremendous leadership on this team between Fry, you go right down the spine Fry and Jel Paulo and Rusnak has been around a long time. Vis the roll Don brothers, right, excuse me, Morris, the roll Don brothers wouldn't put Tevis on a leadership spot yet. He's got to work into that. But I just think

even knew who's been around a long time. But they've got to look each other in the eyes that they've got to kind of have a little bit of a come to as a team and say, hey, this is not the Seattle Sounders, right, And Nicole Ladero, you know Nico his first game, It's it's been said a lot, but you know, his first game, he walked in the locker room, he turned off the music and said, we're not going to listen to music. We're gonna talk to each other.

And at that moment in that season, they were at the bottom of the table and they end up winning the MLS Cups. So they need a little bit of something that says we got to get back on track, whether it's pride, and no one wants to hear this, but I think there's

a lot of tired guys on that team, right. And yes, professional athletes, and yes they play two hours a day, but I know Alex Roldn for instance, you know when he had this five when he went to El Salvador, he was all over the US, right, three different states in the U S. And and I think he was in Asia as well

for a couple of games. So he's done a ton of traveling as well, and it catches up to him and and everybody wants to beat the Seattle Sounders, right, it's not like playing you know, Colorado, where you don't really get up for that game. Everybody wants to beat the Seattle Sounders. So they're in a tough spot right now. They're in a hole after this game. Having said that, they're in fourth place in the MLS, okay, so so we're not in you know, first world problems basically,

yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Having said that, we're in fourth place where twenty four games, I think RSL is twenty four games as well, and then first and second place or at twenty three. So so there's a lot to play for and there's still a chance in this Cup. But they've got to find that energy and they've got to come together. You know what, coach, I love at the beginning of what you were when you were talking um, you mentioned that they need to have fun. Yeah.

I think that that's a great point, and I think it also sort of speaks to your second point about, yes, they're professional athletes. Yes they get to play a game for two hours, you know, that's their job, blah blah blah. Like uh, but I feel like if they just remember to have fun and remember they are professional athletes and they get to play a game, yeah, you know what though, it's so stressful you of

course it is. I didn't do it. Yeah, You're only as good as your last performance, really, right, And that's that's the mind. That's why it's so intense and so competitive. So when it's not going well, you really the mind starts to play some tricks on you, and um, they've just got to get back. But the fun where does the fun come? Goes when you score goals. It comes when you defend well,

joy right, they exactly the coach. I think you said something to Qually into a point as well that there's a little bit of searching that needs to go on here, right, is is what what? What? Who are we? What are we? And I think part of that has to come

from accountability on two on two fronts, right, accountability of self. Maybe I'm tired, maybe, and you tell the coach, you know what, my leg is hurting a little bit more, and so it's best you put somebody in the But it's also that accountability in terms of that we can have that talk, you know, and you receiving it, and also me having the curers to do that and then somebody else saying that to me as well, and then we remember, oh yeah, we are a team, we're

our family. Oh, we like each other, this is why we do this. So I think you need a little bit of that right about now. And to your point, it's not about to screaming anything about that, right, it's loving each other up in a way that you know we can bring the best in all performances. Yeah, you know two words that come to mind as you're saying that too. I also think about Pete Carroll with Doctor Duckworth grit, Right, they got to get some grit, and they

gotta get some accountability and they got to push through. So these are all guys. Most of these guys have rings on this team in some capacity. Right. So whether it's the Champions League or or MLS, right, most of the guys have experienced that. They know what it looks like, they know what it's supposed to look like. But they've got to go back and they got to look themselves in the mirror and and uh and I bet it is quiet in that locker room, but they have got you know, Stephen

Fry is not going to be happy right with this. Uh, Christian rolled on, it's not going to be happy with this. Nico I'm sure is at home saying, Okay, when they get back, I got a light of fire under him. We gotta get going again. So um, you know, and and again I think it has to come from players, right, But I can also see a guy, you know, I could see a coach like Precy, you know, getting after him saying come on, he's a three time MVP of this league, right, and getting after him

and saying, come on, you're better than this. It's time, you know, get your head up and let's get going. So they need a little grit, a little bit of accountability and m and as we said, the fund comes when you're winning, so losing's awful. Well, if any of our listeners need a life coach, um, both of my analysts in here right now are giving some great life coach advice and um, shoot them a DM on Instagram, guys, but you don't kill it. And then

what's interesting coach? On the positive if that foul is called, right, I mean, you know I'm making excuses, but it's that's another thing. You take a look at the film, right, you say, it's not making excuses, but it's taking like a moment and seeing when momentum can shift or when you know there's pivotal moments that you can go back to and be like, well, if this had happened, and I think that that's totally

fair. Yeah, and we're not saying they would have scored right, but the game would have stopped right there, and then then you don't get the bang bang bang on the two goals. But that was a pivotal moment right there, and that's something did look back that was on the second goal? Correct? Yeah? Yeah, you're right, by the way, I missed both of those goals because I was going to go get pizza. Then our amazing broadcast assist in Hannah brought for us, so that that's how quickly those

two goals were scored. Unfortunately, um Delta Airlines. Yeah, sorry, he's on the first goal forty seven minute mark. Delta Airlines. It's proud to donate one soccer ball for every mile ran by Centers FC players this season at three re Foundations one mile, one ball program. When we come back more on the second in half and looking ahead to July thirtieth, I keep almost saying June thirtieth. It it's definitely July July thirtieth match against CF Monterey.

We will be right back. Welcome back into the postmatch show. Following he disappointing League's Cup three nothing lost to Real Salt Lake at America First Field. Guys, I'm gonna just take a you know what, Actually, let's do the eq EQC play of the match first, UM, let's play that. We're gonna be a little bit homary for this one. UM. No goals unfortunately to play for you guys, because no one wants to hear at

norisall goal. So here is our EQC play of the match. Pet Zara Sella now working in the final thirt years and Nelly and Nelly on his left foot shot stay Steven Fry, Brian diving off of those up back to Mazowski and Gomez ANDREI will step into that one. Another big save from Stephen Fry in the forty first minute, his third big save of this half and keeping this match zero zero. So Steph and Fry had quite a first half. I'm looking at the stats right now, eight shots on target RSL had the

entire game, three goals obviously given up. During the break, we were sort of talking about the defensive and sort of Fry's performance. What do you guys think from what you saw tonight, well, I thought I thought he was good. He came up with some big saves to keep it at zero in the first half. For sure. I don't think you can be faulted on any of the goals. I think those go in on most goalkeepers around the world or major league soccer. So I think he's going to be frustrated

that there were that many opportunities, that many shots on goal. But I look at it and I don't think he gave up anything or misread any shots or crosses or anything like that. I thought he was pretty darn solid. It. Certainly most three goals against, it doesn't sound like a great goalkeeping performance, but I thought he was good throughout the night. The goals, I don't think you could have done anything about him. Yeah, I mean, as coaches, you know, when you evaluate the goalkeepers, you know

they come out when they needed to. You know, when they're in their line when they had to, did they shout that out? And now we you know, we don't know, you know, to communication the back line. But he was, you know, he looked he played the party,

was positionally sound. He had a couple of saves and we talked about that and I and again on the goals, I think we talked off there a little bit that it looked like it's the center backs, but it's really, as Brian always says, goals are breakdown in the team goal and and you know, I mean by the team, and so that's what I think. Really, despite the breakdowns in front of him, Fry was pretty stellar. And again it's weird saying that when you know three goals went by him,

But but that is the that is the truth. Yeah, sometimes these games, men, they're maddening right to your point. If a fouls called or a foul's given, you know, it can change the complexion of a game. Uh, when you give up a goal and then you switch off, and then you give up one three minutes later out of place that you've only won one time in all those years, um again, things start to creep into your brain. And we do have to give RSL credit. You got

to give Pablo Mastrihani credit. I thought they were very good. I thought they were on the front foot attacking all the time. They did have joy in their game, right, got rewarded for it with the three goals tonight. So that's a happy locker room. And uh and that's a team that that's their eleventh win of this season, you know, ten in MLS and and now one in this U in this competition. But you got to give

them credit. You know. Wade whoever, when he was doing the analyst position, he used to say all the time, you know, soccer's hard, he used to cut. He used to quote a guy Doug Morrell, who went to Stanford, played for the Sounders a long time ago and a lawyer, right, and Doug would say soccer is hard, and it is. It's tough. RSL wants to win. Those guys are trying to do something for their club, get their paychecks, do their job, play a game they love. Um Seattle, you know, it was just on the

wrong side of it. But like I said, Seattle's got a regroup and they've got to throw up behind him. But they've got to make some changes. You can't just throw it. You can't just say, Okay, we're gonna throw it behind us and then move forward. You gotta say we're gonna throw this one behind us, and this is the new route we're taken. So if I just went out there and just said to score more, it

wouldn't work. It's what you're saying, probably not the best. Well, honestly, you know, it's like we used to say all the time. You know, what's the key to the match is score first. And that sounds so obvious, right, but yeah, no one ever says let them get up to nothing. So we played an NCAA tournament game my second year at Clue at Creton. They've been to two final fours in a row.

They thought they were going to kill us or the first time in the NCAA tournament and they're Creton got a free kick on a pass back that our goalie disagreed with, and he dropped the ball and turned his back. The Creton player put it down, played a square ball and they tapped it in And that could not have been any scripted any better. It was snowing, it was nineteen degrees and Creton thought we're going to kill these guys. We end up tying it up one one and then we get a goal, and I

think because they scored early, they took their foot off the gas. That's the only time I've ever now did I tell the team in the locker room before the game, hag an idea we're gonna let him score. No, we didn't do that. So no, it's score first, score often, and get a clean sheet. You know what game that actually kind of reminds

me of. It's the Usaint Ghana game from twenty fourteen when Clint Dempsey scored so quickly and Ghana was all over us as soon as that happened, and it was kind of like, well, of course we want to score early. But yeah, now they're like all on top of us. Yeah, it's a funny game. I mean, it's a different game. It's not like basketball. You know, the better team is gonna usually win in basketball,

right, and tonight oursel was the better team, no question. But but the lesser team can oftentimes pull something out and and and it's like you're climbing up a mountain. And it was a tough one for Seattle today. And whether it was the heat, whether it's all you know, all the games they've been playing, but they just really never got going in the way. They weren't clicking right. And a lot of times that I've been hearing this from others as well, that you know, some of our penetrating passes

were not finding the seams. Mas you said it before the game about combining down the middle of the field getting crosses in. It took a long time for us to get across. I think in the first half only had down that two had one crossing and uh Alex Roldn had one cross So uh, no crosses, no shots, no goals. You got to get those crosses in. And then Ruy Diaz comes further and further back. Why because he's frustrated he's not getting the ball. You need him next to the goal.

Go ahead. No, I'm just gonna say to you a point. I think that in soccer, the team that on the office that has the is more committed, is more daring, is more courageous, and that is in their play, in their passing and their attacking and sitting there and you know, and defending that blade of grass and as you know, ziggi right, gold dangerous, right. And that's what's really been missing right now with the Sounders and and that commitment. I mean, the players want to win.

I don't you know. It's not that, but but it's about Okay, what system are we playing? Coach, This is to you in terms of reality. So look, they know after when they get the ball they know that we're going that way, We're gonna look that way that way real quickly and make a pass get down there within what the sounders. I'd like to do that with five seconds, six within six seconds kind of attacking, and so I think that's what they just have to get back to the sounders and

they'll be fine. They'll be if you if you looked at all of there's about a three minute clip of Lionel Messi. Every one of his touches. Almost all of his touches are forward and looking to probe and looking to create and the way to the past. I thought some of our passes today went off the field. They should have been clipped, they should have been curled.

There should have been some spin on him, that little detail. If you're pitting a ball to Jordan Morrise and you just ping it and he's not going to catch up to it, but if you clip it, he can, he can get on the end of it. So but if you watch Messi's little highlight video of his all his touches last night for Miami, they were all oftentimes looking forward. The majority of the passes were forward, and they were splitting scenes and finding pockets Sounders FC Soccer is presented by Providence,

Swedish official healthcare partner of Sounders FC. And I know that we're running a little bit late, but I do want to ask you guys one more question sort of before we move on to previewing our game in the next segment. We actually had a moment tonight where a lot of, if not most, of our attacking players were on the field at the same time. A Bear was on the field, Role was on the field, and Jordan was on the field at the same time. And Ruse Knack, thank you and Ruse

Nack, what did you guys think? I mean, we obviously didn't get a chance to really see that firing at all cylinders tonight tonight it might not have been the night, but how did it feel sort of seeing all of our attackers on the field at the same time. What did you think of that move by Schpenzer when it happened. Just very curious about your thoughts there. Well, I think it's the right move. You gotta get goals,

so I think you kind of throw out the kitchen sync. But I think then do they know how to do they know how to play together and they do know how to play together. But they haven't been playing to give that much. So who goes where? Rauld kind of came back a lot, but that allowed you Once when he would come back, you'd see Rusnt go up and get higher up the field, and Jordan next to him, and so I don't know that, you know, and they all are want the

ball, right, So I don't think it was as fluid. But I think there was a lot of talent out there and on the field, and I like to see it, to be quite honest with you. And that's a good moved by Brian. Get everybody out there, you know, So the little bit hungry said that way, when he goes back and looks at it, then he can just you know, figure out exactly how he wants to do that. I non coaching year, I think they should go to

a four four two. Get as many, to your point, get as many offensive players as you can on there, because they are talented, but they just have to figure out the familiarity and the commitment in terms of how they're attacking. Yeah, I agree with that. I think I think it's maybe time now to try that. I think that's gonna become part of the conversation. Do we switch the lineup? Oh, bet, I think does admirable job in their JP is two central midfielders who can be holding. I'd

like to see JP hit a few more of the long balls. He hit one to Jordan Morris before he was subbed off the field, and Jordan gave him the thumbs up. That was the ball that wasn't clipped. But and it just went too far too you know, too far, too fast for for Morris to get to. But I'd like to see a little bit more

of that. I always love to win. Ozzie was hitting long diagonal balls and he would hit three or four a game, and it would just kind of open things up when you got pace like two, or when you can get Christian rolled on higher up the field or Morris, you know, or even a ball over the top for Ruei Diaz. He's got the strength to hold somebody off. But it's a good point, Keiley. We got all

our all our attacking guys on the field. We didn't get any joy out of it though maybe next time, and there will be next time coming up. On the next segment, please stick with us. We are recapping a disappointing three three two nil lost to RSL in the First League's Cup group stage match. Uh stay tuned, Welcome back into the post match show. I am Keeley Dunning here with Mosvita Monne. Oh my god, I just I got I made it through the entire show and I messed up your last name,

Oz. I am so sorry. Oh wow, I made it. I got a ninety darn it, gosh darn it. And I am also here with former Seattle you men's soccer head coach Pete viewing um. Before we sort of finish our recap of this three nothing loss, I will remind everyone League's Cup continues. Sounder's Face CF Monterrey hosting them at Luminfield Sunday, July

thirtieth at six o'clock PM at the Emerald Queen Casino Pitch at Luminfield. Get your tickets today by visiting Sounders FC dot com, slash tickets and watch the match for free on the Apple TV app and Fox Sports one, or listen right here on ninety three point three KJR FM or l RAY thirteen sixty am in Spanish with the Providence, Swedish prematch radio show starting at five thirty. Guys, considering the next League game is not until August twentieth. Is there

such a thing as too much rest? If, gosh forbid, the Sounders do not advance out of the group stage, which, by the way, it's one game whatever, But is there such a thing as too much rest? Or is it really important that they advance so that that game in August twentieth doesn't quite so far away? Yeah, it's easy to get out of match condition for sure, right, I mean you can, so they will be playing. If they didn't advance. I would imagine that there would be

some inner squad games. They probably bring up the Defiance guys and make sure they replicate. But yes, it's it's a double edged sword. You want a little bit of rest, for sure, but then you don't want to get out of your rhythm. They've got to They don't have a rhythm right now. I bet they would say that as well, and so they want to get that rhythm. And the only way to get that rhythm, the

only way to stay match fit is to playing games. Having said that, this team has been doing a lot lately, so they're all gonna, you know, I don't think they. I would be very surprised if with the week's rest if they change the lineup too drastically or uh, you know, rotated squad rotation, um, because I just don't see them doing that. I certainly don't see him sending that message. Um. But if they had

twenty days off, it's a good thing. But it's also something that they have to manage as well, meaning they've got to replicate some kind of games. Yeah, I think you live in a moment. I think as soccer players, you know, you know, they love this, This is this is their dream, right, So what they're trying to do is get right, you know, and then when you come back the next Sunday ride, you you know, you win that game. Now, if you don't, then that's when you begin to say, okay, now what but right now

we can all of us can speculate and all that. But those players, you know, as coach said, that's a quiet locker room, and what they want to do is get right, play well in front of their home fans, you know, and show who they are. And then then after that you have that discussion that I don't know if I said anything, but I think that's the best word you can really, you know, take that thing. Welcome to radio. You know, if you've actually said anything,

I'm not quite sure or I'll just trying to get through it. Um and the Sounders are just going to try and get through this three, this unfortunate three no loss. But again, like we said, they will be hosting a very exciting and very thrilling match against Lina MX side CF Monterrey at Loomanfield on July thirtieth. We will be back on at ninety three point three FM. Thank you guys for listening and please tune into the next Sounders match.
