back and resume the MLS regular season tonight. You're a Luminfield against Atlanta United and a few old friends who will certainly talk about momentarily here on the prematch show as the pre match for cities go on here at Emerald Queen Casino Pitch at Lumanfield. But welcome into the Sunders FC Prematch Show presented by Providence Swedish, official healthcare partner of Sounders FC. Jackson feltz here alongside Brad Evans. We are in the booth, a very smoky booth as we is smoke filled

stadium here at Lumenfield here in Seattle, Aqui. It was Danny Jackson and I just looked up a few minutes ago, sitting at one seventy one. Right now, it is a very very smoky night here in Seattle. But we will talk about that and the elements of that. The Sounders lineup Atlanta United lots ahead here on the prematch show. But if you're just joining us, and you know it has been a very long three weeks, let's step back, let's reset the season. Let's remind everybody what's going on. Sounders

right now sitting at fourth place in the Western Conference. Ten wins, eight losses, six draws. Great start to the season, out of the Club World Cup. Then things kind of hit a turbulent stretch and then here in the last month or so, one one and one in the last three MLS games before the League's Cup, we're in League's Cup. Back to back losses to Real Salt Lake and CEFF Monterey knock Seattle out of the tournament very early

on. But as we mentioned, still very much looking towards the top of the Western Conference, four points up on fifth place Austin, five points a first place Saint Louis the expansion side that has shocked everybody this year. So the Sounders as they begin the final ten games this season, sitting in a good spot. We just need to keep going and hopefully get better. But Brad, as we bring the in here three weeks off. This three weeks

has certainly gotten the team healthy in some ways. Christian rolled On still out with his concussion protocol, but most of the team is healthy. And you gotta think with three weeks off, the rejuvenation and all the three weeks comes into it, this should be a team raring to go here with the final

ten games. Yeah, I mean, we'll talk about this starting lineup, but it's about as strong as you could get and hope for coming off a long break got guys healthy, and I think they were healthy for the entire three weeks. I think they had a number of days off to kind of reset and get back at it. But for these guys to now train for three weeks together and kind of rebuild that relationship that we need to see. We want to see those connections, I don't I don't think they had that

this year. I honestly think the preseason this year for the Sounders was three weeks heading into the Club World Cup. It wasn't long at all before they had to go all the way to Africa to try to get a result. In a one game showdown. So it almost feels like a second season. And I walked in here today it had been so long and it actually did feel like I was walking into a new season. Yeah, the air qualities bad, but you got ten games left to prove it, and with this

lineup it's as strong as you could get. Save for Christian rolled On. Let's really quick GUI to the Telta. Starting eleven for the Seattle Sounders, it is Stephen Fry in goal. Should be mentioned for Stephen Fry tonight he is passing Azzi Alonzo, who is also here, by the way, passing Ozzie Alonzo for most appearances in club history at three hundred and forty. Ozzie will pretty much hand over that top spot here coming up in just a few

minutes. You're back for that is unchanged. It is the same back for we have gotten a custome Alex rolled On on the right, knew who on the left. Jackson Reagan and jim Mar Gomez Andrade are your center backs. The Albert Russneck sitting next to Jul Paulo in the holding midfield, Leo Chew on the left wing, Shordan Morris on the right wing, Nicholas Ladero as you're a center attacking mid the number ten spot, and Roll Rudy as up top and and Brad. You know that is a very very good line up

for Brian Spencer. No Christian rold On yet, we expect him to come back soon, really quickly. I'll just quickly dive into the Providence Swedish team health reports out Dylan Tabez he has left hamstring strain, Kellen Row out at the right quad strain, and then Christian rold On was questionable. They're in

concussion protocol. But Brian Schmitzer said on Tuesday he could be available for this match, so we know he's close, but still Brad Aside from that, and by the way, the night's team health report is presented by Providence Swedish official healthcare partner of Sounders FC. Apart from Christian Brad as you mentioned, this is a very very high level starting lineup who should be able to put a good performance out there tonight. Yeah, well this is it, I

mean from guards here tonight. Award Craig told us this that and Schmitz too that this is how he was going to play these last ten games out He's gonna give these guys the opportunity to get it done. Yeah, they have to have. Some of them not been performing as well as they should, especially going into contract years for a number of them. No, but we've put a lot of time, effort, loyalty into a number of these guys

and it's now time for them to step up. If I think if he gives them four or five games and they're consistent, they stay healthy, and they get the job done, you'll probably see next year multiple guys staying on board. But in four or five games that the Sounders find themselves with maybe a win, maybe two wins, I don't think that's good enough heading into the final five games to get this team into the playoffs. Some changes are going to have to be made, and I think the guys will feel that

tonight. And if if they come out motivated like they did the first you know, twenty thirty minutes against Monterey, that's the Sounders that we know, that's the Sounders that we want to see, same lineup right that we know that they can get the job done, We know that they can attack. Now it's just about that complete performance and I think we're very very close, and if it does click, we're going to be off and running into the

playoffs. Forgetting about this mid season run and early exit from League Cup. It's absolutely right. Seeaff Monterey made the final four of League Cup. They're obviously outstanding soccer club, and for thirty minutes, the Sounders played as the better team. They rocked him here in the first thirty minutes in that game, where yes it ended four to two, but Sounders had a two nothing lead, scoring two goals in the first six minutes and they were on fire.

If they can capture that energy and then continue to build on that, that's where this team can can really hit it hit it off. You know. Overall, I think Brad is you know, we'll talk about the Atlanta more in the opponent a look, but facing a team that's coached by Gonzalo Panada is an interesting factor in here. That's something I want to talk about a little bit later on here on the prematch shows. We count you down

to kick off to Sounders in Atlanta United. But we gotta spend a few minutes here talking about the conditions because right now, a few minutes ago we looked at the Aqui of one seventy one. We can see it and you can just smell it. Every fan in this building right now is breathing it in. It is extremely smoky. I mean, your long career, have you ever played in any conditions like this? I don't remember ever playing in a smoky game. It seems like all these fires started right as I kind

of exited twenty seventeen, twenty eighteen. Yeah, I don't remember coming into a game where you know, you're looking at the lights and the rafters and you just see smoke bellowing in. And I was in Idaho yesterday and it was a two sixty and it's just it's it's not good. But you know, MLS says, play on and they'll get the job done. But tonight, tonight, it's going to be as much about the Sounders playing well as

it is that mental toughness. And I know Schmidtz will be saying in the locker room, like, hey, both teams have to deal with this, right, Whether it's a field that's not good, whether it's you know, rainy conditions windy, both teams have to deal with it. And it's who is going to persevere and push through that that's gonna find themselves on top tonight. So mentally obviously, it's a factor of pushing through that. Physically.

Do you have to do any sort of different preparation as a player, do you have to sort of I'm not sure if they're gonna have an expended a hybrate hydration break mid first half and mid second half, but you have to do anything physically differently to prepare for this. Yeah, I think it would

be different if it was hot out. But a matter of fact is most of the staff is wearing long leave and pants right now, so it's it's a cooler night here in Seattle, and I don't think there's there's any preparation that you can do. Maybe they have the oxygen tanks in the locker room to get these guys some some fresh oxygen at halftime, but there we don't have stops, we don't have you know, set plays where guys can just come over to the bench and get a break. There's nothing you can do

at this point. It's it's mental. It's who can grind the hardest through conditions like this that Yeah, should they be playing maybe not, But a matter of fact is we're on tonight and these guys got to persevere it and push through it. And almost get it in the back of your head. It's one of those things where you can get caught in your own thoughts about oh am I breathing right? And am I able to catch my breath here? You just have to put your head down and get it out of your

mind. Yeah. Absolutely, So it is rough conditions, but they all got to play through it and we will see how it shakes out. Tonight. old friend Brad Smith, who currently plays as a fullback for Houston. So he sending the Portland Timbers a nice little friendly mess. They're just lovely scorked. Ot'll love that. Now, let's take a look here at tonight's sharp

vision opponent. Al can talk about Atlanta United. This is a team coming in that a little bit like the Sounders in the sense they're nine seven eight, seventh place in the Eastern Conference with thirty five points and a bit of a log jam in the East where they're just five points back of Philly for third and five points up on ninth place DC United, and that they have the final playoffs bar right now. Like Seattle, Atlanta failed to make it

out of the League's Cripps Leagues Cup group stage. Seattle was in one group of death with Royal saw Lake and Monterey. And meanwhile Atlanta, who was in the other group of Deaf Cruiser Zool and also into Miami by the way, into Miami. Congratulations for winning League's Cup and Brad the work that Lionel Messi is doing with ten goals in League's Cup one obviously MVP of the whole tournament and was a top goal scorer and led them to their championship win their

in League's Cup. It is just amazing to watch him cook MLS right now? Is it amazing? I mean, yeah, it's expected, I think if he is. I don't think I set him to be this good, though, but he's done it everywhere he's been. I know he did it at Barcelona PSG was you know, he still did it at PSG, but that's a you know, a tricky league on a on a weird team there. But I just think if he was anywhere else in the world, if you sent him to Mexico, if you sent him back to Argentina, if

you said any league, he's gonna do the same exact thing. And you're, oh, and a guy like that in a league, any league, they're gonna they're gonna take heat for it all the league's not good, they're they're not good enough, and it's just okay, sure, but he's going to do it everywhere and anywhere that he goes. And if he were to play seven aside for the rest of his life, he'd be the best player on the pitch. If he was going to go play footsal he'd be the

best footsall player in the world probably too. So that's what we're witnessing right now. I came into the league with Beckham in two thousand and seven, and he didn't do that with the Galaxy. He didn't turn them around right when he got there. They were terrible. It took him a while till they got the other pieces and they got landing back on board and motivated that, you know, a new guy was coming into town. They had to get Robbie Keene to be really successful, and so I just think what he's

done is fantastic. And the guys that he brought over with him, you know, and Chris Henderson's there too, they're going to make the right decisions. They knew that this was coming, you know, three years ago too, whenever Inception was that they were going to take their lumps, not unlike what the Sounders are doing now. We knew that we wanted to push for

Champions League. We knew we had to sign these guys for the long term to keep that consistency to win that trophy, knowing that we could possibly take our lumps, you know, the following year after that year. So it's a similar position. But what he's done is unreal. It's the only player I've watched where I'm actually blown away that he's actually playing here. What you know, I was seeing Gerard, that was my favorite player growing up.

You know, Lampard, you've seen Tierrynri the bet one of the best to ever do it. This is just different. I got to play against Sonri and I still I have only been able to watch Messi and I got chills. I've never done that with a soccer player before, and so it's it's impactful, beyond beyond words. It's really unreal is a good word. Just the fact that he is in our league, ripping it up, winning leagues, got scoring in the final ten goes overall just sensational. I congratulated him

and obviously Chris Henderson, our girlfriend DeAndre Yedln too. There was a great moment after the title win where where where Yedlen is saying here's here's the trophy and Messi saying, no, you're you're the former captain. I just joined the team. Here you here, you raised the trophy any too. Messy took his captain's armband off and gave it to DeAndre and Deandre's like no, no, no, and he's like, no, you're taking this. He's

just he's just good for the league and good for the team. And it's one of those guys where you have to for even though he's you know, playing within your league. Just spectacular. Well that's what's going on there with Miami. We'll see if we face them in twenty twenty four. But for the game, tonight here against Atlanta United. They lost in the group stage there to Miami, and here they are now trying to do with Seattle is doing it and get a good start to their last third of the season.

Coached by our old friend Gonzalo Panada and Brad looking at Gonzo and looking at not only his traits as a coach, but his traits as a player. What do you expect out of a a Gonzo Panada led soccer team? Yeah, well, look, there's there's no there's no moaning on that squad. I can tell you that much. It's it's going to be a hard working, tactically sound team. Now, does he have all the pieces that he

wants to be successful? I don't think so. That's a tough part of becoming a head coach in this league, no matter who your GM is salary cap rules, you kind of have to have guys that the previous coach brought in. And so I think in the next couple of years he'll find all of his pieces and they'll be once again a formidable force. But like you said, they're still finding their way this year. It's a team that has

just console up and down. I mean, they have a World Cup veteran two in Almata's played with Messi's a fantastic player, but just hasn't had that same exact impact. He's been really good, it's been really good, but just not the same impact. And so I think it's a team where they need to figure their identity out. But I know that they're going to come in here and be tactically sounding. Gonzo is gonna want this one more than anybody on the pitch. Speaking of people we know very well. As we

look down right now, we see what's going on on the field. Ozzy Alonso right now standing beside Steph and Fry. As of this moment, right now, the two men are tied for most club appearances all time in the MLS era at three hundred and thirty nine. The moment this match kicks off and Stephen Fry takes the moment in goal, Stephan Fry will eclipse that and

reach three hundred and forty. So we see right now Ozzy Alonzo standing next to Stephan Fry and Rad What a amazing honor here as we see Azzy handing over a goalkeeper jersey to Stephen and I mean we watch club history in this moment Yeah. What what's really cool about these moments and watching them is it makes you very nostalgic, right, and it just shows what this club has done in terms of consistency. And it's so weird how things line up that

Ozzie's here to give this this step tonight. Ozzie and I both got our two hundredth on the same night, I think, And it's just serendipitous how things line up, right, and it is so cool to see. And this is how you build tradition and this is how you build culture, is that you have guys that have been here for so long and that ingrained themselves. Steph's the guy who was going to be here forever, no matter what I mean. He might he might have a vacation home or two, but

he'll be here for the long term. And you love to see these moments and it just makes you feel prideful to be a part of something like that, and to see guys that have committed to this team for such a long time. It fills me with great joy to see, well, the amount of time it took Stephen Friday to perfect his house over there on Bainbridge Island. It took so long you'd think he's going to be here and for the long haul and have plays out there on the island. It's beautiful if anybody

caught the King five Special from a few weeks ago. A beautiful home Stephen Fry has out there. But yeah, Atlanta, not of here playing coming to town. You mentioned Thiago Almada really Atlanta's brightest star there with eight goals ten assists on the season on the Argentina national team player. They also have a Greek striker that Danny Jackson's gonna say it's name probably a number of times tonight. Your goals, uh he Yakuma Gee, I think I was where

I said that right. My Greek is a little bit weak there, Bret. All together, he has ten goals this season after coming over from Celtic in February. He is an outstanding striker there from Greece now with Atlanta. But this is a very very talented Atlanta team. But Brad, turning our attention back to Seattle, let's get it to our players to watch you. You got tonight for Seattle. You know, I haven't gone with this guy the whole year. He hasn't been a pick for me. But tonight something

is clicked in my brain that Raoul has to be the man's night. And if you're going to be the highest played player on a roster, and you're gonna be, you know, the guy driving all the fancy cars and doing the thing and wearing all the fancy clothes, and you better be the fanciest, you know, best player on the field. And with ten games left in the season, he should be hungrier than hungry tonight to make a statement. And I think a lot of guys get lost in thinking that they can

just go anywhere after this. It's not that easy to just you know, go get paid in another league. Yeah you might. Do you want to live in China? Do you want to live in Saudi Arabia? Maybe maybe you do. But I know a lot of guys that have gone over there and said, hey, I want I want to come back because I want to be here. And I think, hopefully in the last three weeks something clicked that said, hey, I want to be here for the long term. Maybe my kids are in school, and you know, he's a quality

player. We've seen it over the last you know, five seasons. He's got to be the player tonight to put the team on his back and put the ball in the back of the net. You referenced Craig Wibo's comments from earlier this week, and he said, like we pay. This is an exact wording, but it just was we play a number of players a lot of money. It's time for them to earn that pay. And for ral

Rudiaz, he is one of those guys. He is one of the designated players for the Sounders and he's paid at a lot of money and it is absolutely time for all Rudy has to get going and help lead this team to a high playoff spot. I'm going Ju al Polo for the simple reason of Thiago Almada is a brilliant, brilliant midfielder for Atlanta and when he gets going in the attack, Sounders are gonna need somebody there in the defensive midfield. And whether it's a center backer, I think JP is gonna be kind of

the number one guy. You gotta make sure Almada doesn't find those channels and doesn't find those lanes to pass, create opportunities ten assists this year and also score himself. So I'm watching joal Polo for that sense. But we are just about fifteen minutes away from kick here at Emerald Queen Casino Pitch at Luminfield. And for those of you who have been Sounder fans for all, you know Garth Logerway, former general manager,

president of soccer with the Sounders for many years. Eight years he was here. Two MLS Cups, four Western Conference titles, one Conkercalf Championship last year, a League's Cup final couple of years ago. He also won the Best Executive Award at the World Football Summit last year. So this is a man who is certainly, I think, perhaps undisputably the greatest American soccer GM of

all time. He has done an unbelievable job at building Champions took obviously Real Salt Lake to a Conkercalf final, and then he won it there with Seattle and Brad. As we see here, Adrian Hanauer is handing Garth Logway right now a box that contains a Conkercalf Champions League ceremonial watch that everybody with the organization got after winning Conkercalf Champions League last year. And a great honor for

a man, of course, who then departed Seattle in the offseason. He went to become the president and CEO with Atlanta United, a big chance for him. But what a job that Garth did over his eight years here. Brad, Yeah, look, I mean it was a guy I didn't know much much about coming into the Sounders organization. And to have a guy like Adrian who was here from two thousand and nine, who trusted you and built

the team into you know, obviously he was amazing too. Right, we had open cups, we had you know, everything that went into the first year and building that team that set the tone for where the club is at now. And then to bring in a new guard that kind of had a different view on how things should be played, and that can be tricky, and so you kind of you talk to yourself in your head, like do

that Danny. They want to be a little higher up the field. As we see three forwards right now defending thirty yards away from the Atlanta goal, and I like to see it, and I like how direct they were right off the bat. They've got to do some things, create some things to get their confidence back. But right now, that was a terrific play wide and a good opportunity. We were fortunate to not be down to zero. It's certainly Atlanta introducing four new players in this summer

transfer window. Two are out there today, My Yamba playing in the middle of the field and I've mentioned Silver as well as MLS debut. Both players looking shot as Rozetta cuts the ball out rolls the bull d answer, We'll scare on the fast side the right cuts it in sign to the MLS debut

But again it's so set piece all. Marta certainly is a set piece specialist. Again, he's a good delivery to Yakomarcus. And Brad, this team was off for three weeks and I've kind of left after these three weeks feeling the exact same way three weeks ago.

Really disappointed after what was a lost by two goals. You know, just very clear the team didn't have it tonight and they lost by a score of two nothing, a goal in each half for Atlanta. Let's just open the postgame with with your thoughts on what you saw from the ninety minutes. Yeah, I think Atlanta from the start the far superior team. They looked like they had a game plan. And what I like about Atlanta is when Almada gets the ball, he's so unpredictable that the Sounders had no idea what

to do, especially in the midfield. And I think that's what we're missing right now when I watch it. It felt like the Sounders did pattern play and set plays for the last three weeks with no creativity, no inside out runnings outside end. There was no variety in our game tonight. No nobody out there's trying to say, hey, I'm gonna try something different, to

try to solve this problem and do something different. It was almost like beating a dead horse with the same thing over and over and over again for sixty minutes until we made some subs. Obviously that changes up some things. But

you see it right now. It's Andy Rose and it's Stephen Fries still on the field talking about what happened tonight, what needs to change, And so we see it now that there's people asking questions on the field, and it probably does have to come from Steph at some point, because you know he sees it all from behind, like what do I need to do to get this team on the right track as a captain of this team. So overall, just a disappointing night. Look, lackluster, smoke both team, We're

dealing with it. It's not an excuse tonight. So one of those games where the Sounders what down seventy seventy percent to Atlanta on possession? Yeah, tonight. You don't see that very often. So lackluster tonight, a lack of solutions, just not able to solve the riddle tonight. I want to go back to the comment you make because I think you nail hit the nail on the head and that's that you just kept doing the same thing over and over and pounding her head against the brick law and I go, I go

to the definition of insanity right doing the same thing over and over. And I think what frustrates me too is for that first sixty minutes of doing the same thing over and over, we this is that that was the same thing that we saw a month ago in the games against Dallas, and the league's

got It's funny. I guess it kind of thought that in that three weeks, maybe there's some creativity and maybe there's some changes, Maybe there's something that can can get in into this team and and make them unpredictable and a little bit different. Here for the final ten games of the year, and it does still look the same, and it is frustrating Brad in the sense that it just it's not working right now. I don't know what the answer is.

I don't know if it's about individual players stepping up or coaching stepping up and changing some things. IM not sure there. It's a big pie. You can split up the slices anyway you want, but but something needs to change our feet. Yeah, I think it's just personnel. I think if you if you have guys that have played together for a really long time, it's it's hard to expect something more than what they already do. And if they were producing, you know, three or four years ago, then why

would a player say, oh, I'm gonna change my game completely. It's it's just a personnel issue right now. And so the guys that are playing on the field are not jelling and not playing together right now. They don't seem to be playing like a team. A team and So for me, it's it's about maybe making one or two or even three changes. But the problem is, when you look down our bench, I don't see many game changers on our roster that are going to propel us into the last nine games.

So I think we are relying on these guys and saying, Okay, we're gonna do it again. We're gonna roll it out next week four two, three one, and we're crossing our fingers that you know, he's gonna get into the right spot, whether it's Leo, whether it's the ball to Jordan, whether it's defensively finding our markers on the back post. We're just waiting because I don't think that the guys on the bench, save for you know, offensively. Maybe Freddie can step in. I think he provides a

little something different. Maybe it's at Bear finds his foot, But other than that, I don't see anyone on this roster coming in for the last nine games and really taking hold of that position. And that's a real real game changer. The one guy is Christian who's coming back from the concussion, and

we hopefully we can get him back. Maybe he's the answer, But right now I completely agree they just it doesn't feel the cohesion, doesn't feel like there and it was not good tonight not good at all, really not a good time. I think sometimes inside of a locker room there needs to be a change. And maybe that was Schmittz's way of saying, Okay, I just want you, Niko, to focus on soccer. I just want you to focus on yourself and getting

back to the player that we know you can be. Don't worry about, you know, moving pieces on the field and being the guy that's telling you know, talking to the ref or moving players around and trying to really solve the puzzle. Just focus on yourself. I remember Ozzie had the captain c or something happened in the locker room where he was given the captain's arm band. And before the game he didn't want it, so he just threw it to me, and that's how I became captain of the team from then on

out. So, you know, I don't know what went down in the locker room and what made Steph, you know, ultimately have that arm band. But maybe he was a guy that was being more vocal in the locker room. He's the guy that's been here for a long time. I remember that bad run we had in twenty sixteen, and you know, we had lost the game and I went in and Jovin was kind of like on his cell phone and he was okay with us losing. And I think I said in the press, like, we don't lose here, like it's not okay

to ask you that question, and that's right. And so I think maybe that's what happened, is Steph sees something and smells something from behind that was there before that isn't there now. So maybe it's his responsibility to take it by the reins and turn this thing around, you know, being that leader. I remember that in twenty sixteen. It's just a little bit off in lackluster right now because I think I was right here that was when it was one nothing. Still he scores that. As we look ahead to the road match a week from today, you know, after a match like this too, nothing lost to Atlanta, do you switch anything up in the week of training ahead, whether it's higher intensity, shorter sessions,

you know, et cetera, et cetera. Do you change anything about the way that you treat this next week after a game like this. Yeah, I think that's a great question. I don't think it's it's like any punishment to the team, because I think effort was was was there for the most part. I mean we were closing plays down. Now it mentally will reall there. No, So I would say they come out and increase intensity

this week. Let's make it a whole competition week. I'm sure they did that for the past three weeks, but they weren't in a game rhythm. So having a tournament day, right, maybe there's a champion of the tournament day. You still love playing that throughout the week. It wasn't part of our normal routine, but we usually did it when we needed a little bit

of explaining that help in our steps. So it's basically a day of either you know five, five sixty six or seven by seven and you play a giant round robin against all the teams, maybe it's two games each, and it's competitive. It's short, it's tight. It's about putting the ball in the back of the net from short distances. So it's smaller fields. You're right in front of the goal. It's basically the eighteen yard boxes. You're halfway line, so tons of shots, tons of goals. You're sliding,

you're showing that extra effort in those games, and it's competitive. You stay with the same team the whole time, and maybe that's what we need right now. It's just that extra competitiveness and maybe that you never know, it brings out something in someone that inspires them to head into Sunday's game. That's going to be a massive game against Minnesota. That's flying right now. I'm playing really well, and sometimes that's what you need, because I think they

had the time off and away from the game. They had four days off right as we left that Monterey game. So that's not an excuse anymore to get away. Now. It's about competing and fighting and getting that passion, get that energy, and we want to see at nine games left in the season. Right now, Sounders fourth place in the Western Conference, but with a lot of teams on their heels, including Houston, who picked up a five nothing win over Portland tonight.
