Speaker 1

Welcome to the Sounders FC postmatch Show. Sounders FC Sucker is brought to you by Providence, Swedish official healthcare partner of Seattle Sounders FC. The Sounders FC postmat Show starts now to.

Speaker 2

The final here from Starfire Sports Stadium. It is LAFC one, Sounders zero and Seattle. He has been eliminated from the United States Open Cup here in twenty twenty four. LAFC moves on to the final where they will be hosting Sporting Kansas City.

Speaker 3

But for Seattle, this is the end of the road.

Speaker 2

Jackson Feltz, calen Roe, Pete Fewing here for the postmatch show. We'll have you for the next half hour to talk about this loss, and we'll get into the game. We'll get into the dynamics and all that, and then the full ninety Let's just start with the penalty.

Speaker 3

The LAFC penalty kick. It came.

Speaker 2

It was obviously called in the eightieth minute. Bowonga hits in the eighty third. I'll let you guys jump in here a second, but let me just say this and leave preface sit with.

Speaker 3

I haven't gotten a perfect look at it yet.

Speaker 2

We've always seen the replay that they had showing on Apple. We've all kind of gotten a little bit of a look very quickly at what happened. It hits an elbow, it may have hit a hand.

Speaker 3

Let me just say this.

Speaker 2

For the thousands listening and a thousands watching, and the thousands and thousands here in this stadium, nobody.

Speaker 3

Deserved for a game to end like that.

Speaker 2

Nobody deserved to have a game end one nothing on that kind of a soft penalty. And regardless of if it hit a hand, if it hit an elbow again, you know, we'll see the slowest, slowest, slowest version and see if it is indeed a good call or not.

But regardless of of of that, the fact that we do have to look at such a slow version, such a you know, we we do have to look at it ten different ways in ten different times to see if it was a good call, That in of itself makes it very questionable and very soft.

Speaker 3

Just based on that.

Speaker 2

So the fact that this game is decided on that is such a shame. And I feel for all of the thousands of Sounder fans who are walking out of here, whether it's a smile or a frown on their face, and for the thousands watching and listening you had to watch and deal with a result tonight that comes on that kind of a call. I am, it's it's I'm disgusted inside that that game had to end like that calen Roe Pete viewing. But them's the breaks in soccer. I suppose h and this is what we have. It's

a one nothing l AFC win. But I just I feel bad for every fan who had to take in this game.

Speaker 4

It's it's a it's a tough, uh, tough pill to swallow.

Speaker 3

Everyone knows that. You know, you don't want to lose in a pen. We're playing very well.

Speaker 4

The Seattle was, uh, we haven't gotten a look at it.

Speaker 3

It's in our time.

Speaker 4

Refs have made millions of bad calls and probably we've also, you know, disagreed on many calls that were probably right on their end as well. So it's not a it's not a way you want to end the game, just like you said, But the fact that he made the call before and then had to go to the v R. If it hits a hand, it's got to be a pen. That's the problem is he made the call first for a penalty. When he goes to var if if he sees a hand, it's it's gonna stand.

Speaker 5

You know.

Speaker 4

If he didn't, maybe he doesn't call it. If he didn't call it, let it play out. Maybe he doesn't go back to VR and see anything. But it happened, and to be to be fair to Andrew Thomas, he almost got a hand to it.

Speaker 5

What a great pedal drill drilled it.

Speaker 4

I mean, I think it hit the side net and Andrew's finger was right there. But you know, on the positive side, it was one I'm joking here, but it wasn't three zero. But it didn't look like it didn't feel like any of those past games. It looked like we were on top. It looked like we were dominating the game, that we were controlling the tempo. And I'm gonna take, you know, the field out of it. The intimacy,

the starfire. I think this group learned how to from their mistakes and how to play against this LAFC team that front three fail didn't have much.

Speaker 5

Yeah, there's there's progress in that regard.

Speaker 6

There was more fight and but LAFC, you know, on the penalty kick, the quality to strike that ball as hard as he did, he smashed it. Uh and Alex's response to me was he knew he hit in the hand, but gosh, the ball. It was an absolute rocket and Alex wasn't more than three or.

Speaker 5

Four yards away. I don't think so.

Speaker 6

I saw it and I thought he had to call a penalty kick. And it is unfortunate Jackson. It's it's one of those things you know, as a coach, as a player, I've been on both sides of it where you just get you're gutted. These fans are gutted by That's the way the game is determined is on a penalty kick. It was a great penalty. Andrew did guess the right way. We did have chances. We score a goal,

Jordan Morris. It's a good goal. He's off he's in an offside position, comes back on side and then gets the header and it's a great header.

Speaker 3

It's the classic coaching move.

Speaker 4

Right you're offside and they think they're gonna forget about and he steps back on and he may have been just I mean, it may have been a tow. It may have been a heal like I even got to look at that either, but it may have been you know, and watch call it. Yeah, if they call it it has to be clear and that's the thing, right, and that really quickly and for accountability purposes.

Speaker 2

Our referee to night was Ricardo Fierro. The var official was Kevin Stott. By the way, uh but to that degree, we we did get a nice slow mo look at that. Jordan's off. He does come back on from my eyes and I sent this out. People seem to disagree with me. It looks like he's on when he steps back, but they rule him off.

Speaker 3

The problem with with the whole.

Speaker 2

Situation is they took a good two minutes to take a look at the handball call. They took the time to figure it out. It didn't feel like they took the time to actually take a deeper look and if Jordan was off or not, or if you got back on. That's the frustrating part for me. Take the extra time, take that two minutes, because you just add it on later. Instead of adding seven minutes, you can add nine minutes.

Take that time. Sure, of course some time, man, No, I can't just keep adding Take the time actually looking to see if Jordan's off or not, because I'm still not sure.

Speaker 5

So isn't that interesting?

Speaker 6

I mean, that's what it comes down to it's two calls, right, and one goes but against us and one goes to goal against us.

Speaker 4

But but if you're in that if you're in that locker room right now, you got coach, right, You got right your coach.

Speaker 3

You're not telling the guys. Hey, look, it's the two calls, right. You're saying we had chances, we had opportunities.

Speaker 4

You're looking back and saying, how could we have stopped You know, why did they get a.

Speaker 3

Corner not a throwing right? Did we clear that out?

Speaker 5

You know what?

Speaker 3

What what was the chance of you know? Why wouldn't we taken shots?

Speaker 4

We really only had what one or two the goal that got called out sides and a few long distance shots that were fairly close to Laris.

Speaker 2

And that was a big discussion point coming in was how to solve their back three.

Speaker 5

And we didn't.

Speaker 6

I think we could have been a little more direct after the goal. I think there was a lot of sideways or uh uh and back around the perimeter in our half when we played balls for it. Georgie is a spark, no question, and causes problems.

Speaker 5

He he's so active that.

Speaker 6

He draws players and even if they I think you said at halftime, killing Even if they don't win the first ball, if they win the second ball, then they've got a chance at it. So but I think if you're in the locker room and you're the coach, you say, hey, Alex, that's not your fall.

Speaker 5

That's one of the that just happens.

Speaker 6

You're flying at somebody and he rockets the ball and you know you can't move your hand quick enough.

Speaker 5

I mean, he could not move his hand quick enough.

Speaker 3

That's a tough one.

Speaker 6

Certainly not intentional, but yeah, that's it's just but that is the way that this is why we all show up, you know, this is why everybody comes to watch the games. You know, sometimes you're on the right end of it and it's awesome, and sometimes you're on the wrong end of it and it does.

Speaker 5

It gut you.

Speaker 6

This whole group, everybody who shows up today, they want to beat l AFC.

Speaker 5

Except for that corner. I was impressed how many.

Speaker 6

LAFC fans were over in the corner, supporting their team, traveling up here for it. But yeah, and you got to give credit to LFC because you have to find ways to win. It was not a pretty game, and Killen's right, there were times where Seattle had the better the play This was like this was a playoff game and that ball was bouncing all over the place. It had to come down to one little bit of mistake

or magic, right, And yeah, yeah, tough, super tough. That's but again that's why you know, you start with, however many teams in the US Open Cup.

Speaker 5

Yeah, fifty sixty seventy right before.

Speaker 3

And the quality and the quality will always shine through.

Speaker 5

Yeah, yeah it does, and it did, and you earn your luck. You earn your luck.

Speaker 4

I mean when I think about this and that that penalty, right, look at us back in twenty two we were in Pumas.

Speaker 3

Yeah right, we're at Pumas and.

Speaker 4

We get too late penalties right, right, and our life one of.

Speaker 3

Them was questionable. Both of them weren't questionable. They're fairly questionable. One of them was, right.

Speaker 4

It's a great at the very end of the game, that was our good luck. That's a great I'm not saying that, you know, it's not going to come back around or anything, but you know, we've we've had our fair share of that kind of luck.

Speaker 5

That's a great point. I mean, it doesn't help too much, but it's an example. See.

Speaker 2

Okay, so I feel like the first ten minutes of this post game show has been very reason we've actually, you know, been very calm with ours. Let me let me just for everybody who wants a postgame show that does this, let me just give you the thirty seconds here.

Speaker 3

It was a crap call. We got screwed.

Speaker 2

This is you know, every yeah, I hold me back, hold me back, all the things, right, anger and frustration that we can't beat l AFC and all these things. There's so much anger and it feels like we got screwed, and it feels like that penalty was completely soft and it was it was crap and all this things and yeah, okay, all that is in our hearts is certainly we've been very measured so far. But don't take that to mean

we're not very upset about this. Obviously, Sounders losing here in the US Open Cup going out that angers all of us.

Speaker 3

So yes, we're happy with the run.

Speaker 2

We're happy with the three wins that got the Sounders to a semi final and Brian Schmeenz's first run to a semi final as head coach, and for the job that this team has done I mean, gosh, this is only the second regulation loss in the US Open Cup. Uh, non penalty loss in the US Open Cup at Starfire

for the Sounders. So it it's been an impressive run, but it doesn't have been and it's very frustrating, and I'm very angry at the penalty and I'm going to go home and probably try to find every tiny little angle on that to see if it is right that it did hit the hand.

Speaker 5

Alex's response, he knew, because I don't.

Speaker 3

Want to hear that right now. No, I just want to be angry right now.

Speaker 2

I want to be angry that it was a bad call, and fans certainly want to be angry that it's a bad call.

Speaker 3

But we'll all kind of go and we'll.

Speaker 2

Do the homework and we'll see if it really was. But yes, the anger is there. I think we've been measured, but the anger, the frustration is there. There is an entire game we got to kind of break down because for ninety minutes, well for eighty minutes, the Sounders played LAFC ridiculously tough. It was a tremendous game. It looked like it was going to go to one hundred and twenty minutes. It was just turning out. I think you know how we thought it could have coming in before

that penalty. We should spend some time to talk about how well the Sounders played in that eighty minutes, especially on that defensive side. A few quick things before we move on well. Welcome back to the postmatch show from Starfire Sports Stadium, where, unfortunately, tonight LFC has eliminated your Seattle Sounders a final score of one nothing in the US Open Cup Semifinal. LAFC will now move on to host the Fire against Sporting Kansas City on September twenty fifth. Sure wish that was happening at Lumenfield, but a last LAFC get that soft penalty as we talked about, and they are moving forward.

Also, Delta Airlines is brought to donate at one soccer ball for every mile ran by Sounders FC players this season through Ray Foundation's one Mile, One Ball program. We do always have a Emerald Queen Casino play of the match, and you know we won't have I think there was

a great clearance off the line by Jackson Reagan. I think that might be the play, and that kind of leads me into the conversation, and really quickly, I should say, before we have this conversation, I will quickly mention that the play of the match is presented by Emerald que Cassino,

the betting capital of the Northwest. And that header off the line that came right before halftime, it's indicative of a defensive performance by the Sounders and the midfield too, that kept the Sounders in this game for eighty minutes. We were going into the eightieth minute feeling like, Okay, this is there for this team. If we can just get one breakaway, we get one breakthrough, rolls on, Pedro's on,

it's there for us. And I think the defensive effort is a big credit to why this was still such a game in the eightieth minute.

Speaker 3

Well, you said it.

Speaker 4

You said that the Sounders played a tough game, and I think tough is the right word. They ran around, they got into tackles. They were good in that sense, but they didn't necessarily have a good game. If you're with me here, the quality of the Sounders did not shine through today. It was very hard working, it was tough.

Tackles are being thrown around, there was some patience, but the final ball, the last decision, the runs in the box, the quality didn't shine through as much as I had wanted so to call that a good or great game, I don't see it.

Speaker 3

But played them tough.

Speaker 6

That was the game, the way the game went, because you could say the same thing for LAFC. Correct What we saw in the last two with LAFC was very different than what we saw tonight.

Speaker 5

There wasn't a rhythm for either team.

Speaker 6

Again, it's a smaller field, it's a tight confined you got the crowd all around.

Speaker 3

You felt LAFC getting twisted by that for sure?

Speaker 5

Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 6

I mean it wasn't kai Kamara didn't get his way, Belonga didn't get his way right, and so it.

Speaker 5

Wasn't a pretty game. It wasn't a pretty game for either team.

Speaker 6

As a matter of fact, Steve Chileandelo the LAFC coach, might walk in and say, hey, you know what, that wasn't pretty, but we'll take it. And I've said that a lot in a locker room before, you know, And I've also said in a locker room, hey they were a little better than us today, but we found a way to win. So it wasn't a pretty game for either team. I don't think coach s Metzer will say that.

I don't think Chilandela will say that, but to your point, we've given up ten goals against this team, and tonight we did not give up a goal in the run of play. That is some progress, something to build on, and then let's hope that we get a chance to see them again, you know in the MLS playoffs.

Speaker 4

Maybe I think it's, you know, something to build on it. We were learning from our mistakes. We watched this game and we called this game last time and it was three zero over going this just feels like it's July.

Speaker 3

Why why is this happening again?

Speaker 4

We didn't feel that today and I think that's a good positive, right which we did change some tactics. We weren't running around creating space for their midfield. We weren't pressing up high and having gaps. He sat back a little bit more when the ball get the ball got in your area. Yes you pressured, but you weren't spreading the field and I think that was a positive. And

I think you saw that toughness come through. Now when you have that and this is playing a full game, if you can then find the quality on the pass, on the final ball, those things will make Sounders the best team in the West again.

Speaker 6

Yeah, And the two thoughts on what you just said is one the physicality that Jordan Morris came out. I remember hearing after that lost Jordan said, I'm sick of losing to those guys. And Jordan is such an even killed guy. He scores a great goal and he runs the quarters. I thanks a lot of those super f on you know, everybody else.

Speaker 5

You know, Yeah, he he's just.

Speaker 6

Is not too never gets too high and never gets too low. But today he got into it a couple of times, and he got into it long, had a off the ball tackle. Jordan didn't like it at all, and you could see there was much more grit. Paul Rothrock brought some grit to the game. So that's positive too. They're not backing down to La And then the fact on the second part that the fact that they again didn't give up a goal in the run of play,

that's that's a good thing. The other thing we took away was in the last one at Luman, they were able to just hit long ball after long ball, and we didn't see much of that tonight. Maybe it's the smaller confines, but as Kellen said, we adjusted the tactics a little bit and it took away some of their strength, so there is something to build on. But that's this is this is again, this is why we show up.

These games are not that's a very very good team loaded with talent, right and you know that's but the games don't always go the way you want them to go.

Speaker 2

Well, you said you to say the LFC in the MLS Cup playoffs, I'll be the first person to say, no, I don't want to see them. LA Galaxy, please go eliminate them for us and then we'll see you in the West Final.

Speaker 3

That would be fantastic.

Speaker 2

But listen, you know a Least Cup run ended in the core finals to AFC. Open Cup run ended in the semifinals to AFC. I mean, there's ML's Cup playoffs ahead. We know that coming up here in a couple of months, and we'll see what happens there. But obviously, for tonight, the Open Cup has come to an end for the

Sounders with this one nothing loss. Speaker 2

Welcome back to the postmatch show from Starfire Stadium. Sounders have lost tonight in the Open Cup of final, score of one and nothing really quick. In that first segment, you know, of the post match, we're talking about how well haven't seen a good angle of l e FC's questionable soft penalty, you know. And honestly this is kind of for us happening in real time right because we're not getting great angles, We're not getting close up slow

moo shots. And and credit to to some folks on on Twitter, I you know, for once, Twitter is actually pretty fantastic David Fitzgerald, Brian Boland who sent me the the close up slow moo high quality angles and and what do you think now, I don't want to say it, so so here here's I mean, honestly, let's just let's just let's just say it. We can see the high

quality SlowMo angle comes off of Bogosh's right foot. It then first hits Pedro de le Vega y Nick nicks the hand, fine hits, it hits Peter de la Vega in the right hand, It hits dale Vega's right hand and then it deflects down off of Alex's left wrist. It looks like it's so not one now it's two.

Speaker 3

You're the one who said it.

Speaker 2

Yeah, I mean, like, listen, the reality of the situation is I hate saying it and I don't I want it to be all angry and I wanted to, you know, say it was a you know, you know what call and all those things. Looking at the close up high quality replay, I it does look like a penalty. It looks like a penalty times too. I want to be honest.

Speaker 3

Now we can move on. I can't move We can move on because we have to move on.

Speaker 5

But that's the game, right and it's just so frustrating game.

Speaker 2

But for for Sounder fans listening, just know, at the end of the day, that was a good call. It was a penalty. It was well struck by Bolonga on the pk No on the Yeah, it was what it was and it makes us angry, but it is what it is. As it looks like the Kilio is also frustrated by the ending as well.

Speaker 3

It is cold, Yes it is cold.

Speaker 2

We'll finish up here, but we can't finish up before talking about what's next. As the focus shifts for the sounders. It focuses focus shifts for all fans. Because it is the Portland Timbers coming up this Saturday. It's gonna be a seven to thirty kickoff, seven o'clock pre match show right here Sports.

Speaker 3

Radio nine to fifty KJR AM.

Speaker 2

If you can also watch the match via MLM Season Pass on the Apple TV app. Listen in Spanish language on l Ray thirteen sixty. But for us here on nine point fifty again the Providence. We just prematch show. We'll begin at seven o'clock. Callan row, the hated Portland Timbers. We went there in May. We got that awesome two to one win where Ruiy Diez hit the winner at the start of the second half. That was in the early stages of an amazing summer run for this club.

And we would love to see the team take the frustration from tonight, go down there and kick their butts again.

Speaker 3

They have to have a shorter memory than you do.

It's they've got to kind of put this game behind them, learn what they can, but now they've got to focus on the league. This is something one of the hardest things to do as a pro going through the league all of a sudden, having the Open Cup in the summertime, which is usually you're the hottest and hardest time to play through. Then they add the League's Cup, which is

a full month off of the actual regular season. So your brain is kind of going all over the place and now having to focus back on what is you know, really really important of the league and making sure you're stay in the playoff position, which coach just pointed out it is in fifth place. But then to go and have to transition after this kind of loss and go play you are crossing down rifles.

Speaker 3

I mean, this is this is.

Speaker 4

A game that needs to be mentally every player needs to be mentally strong. Yeah, and we need to see the physical aspect that we did today as well.

Speaker 6

Yeah, and it'll have the intensity of this game that the crowd that Portland puts out, they're in your face. And every game at Portland or Portland here, it is the best rivalry in the league, no question.

Speaker 5

And this this is a Portland team at home. They're pretty darn good.

Speaker 6

There are seven wins, they only have two losses and I think four ties, and then they've scored a boatload of goals, but they've also given up. They've scored fifty four and they've given up forty six. So it's a team though that you know, they've finally figured out how they're gonna play. And you're right, Kellen, the we're here, we are Wednesday, and there it's Saturday. There's not a lot of time. You got to put it behind you.

And right now that's a crushed Seattle Sounders locker room and they've got to they've got to go home, get a meal, get the legs up, and then tomorrow morning do a region and be ready to go again.

Speaker 5

But they're gonna go into hostile waters.

Speaker 3

It's hostile waters. And I'm looking at the standings right now and Portland's three points behind us.

Speaker 4

This is this is a pivotal game staying because they're on the bottom there, they're in seventh place. This is a pivotal game to stay above Portland, to stay above Vancouver who's also creeping in with two games in hand from us right just only two points away. So this game is not just a right read anymore. It is a staying above the line. It is making sure that we uh pinpoint our Cascadia Cup. It is this is this is an important game going forward, and it's mentally.

One of the hardest ones to get up for after a loss like this.

Speaker 6

The you tell us that once you walk out on that field, does everything that's happened the adrenaline kick in.

Speaker 11

Right.

Speaker 4

I'm from I'm from here, and I hate Portland anything Oregon.

Speaker 3

My sister was a duck and I get.

Speaker 4

I still give her crap that she was older than me, so she gets she picked first, she picked wrong.

Speaker 6

It's okay, but I step.

Speaker 4

Over that line and my life goes away. Coach, you're a different person on that field. You've known this and and it's the best thing for me. Was the Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan right there. They shake your hands off off the field, but the second they step on that court, they are different people.

Speaker 3

And that's what you need to do here.

Speaker 4

And I think a good example of that is actually a Christian rolled on when he gets angry.

Speaker 3

Or jump all up.

Speaker 5

Yeah.

Speaker 4

These guys are so good at that, and I think that needs to happen. But in a place like Portland, it's I'm I'm on the bus now and I'm thinking I'm gonna kill someone there.

Speaker 5

Yeah, yeah, good, that's good, because you're right.

Speaker 3

That was my mindset r.

Speaker 5

It is tight right now.

Speaker 6

In the in the standings, Uh, Vancouver's a couple behind us, Portland three behind us, and there's not you know that there's eight games to go.

Speaker 5

There's not that much time. There's not that much time.

Speaker 4

So these frunch time positives though, is the last time we lost. We lost l a f C to get out of the League's Cup. The next game was Minnesota and we went and got to win, right.

Speaker 3

We played well, good goals. Again. Let's you know, they know.

Speaker 4

How to transition after a loss. They've done it before. They've done it a few times. So the fact that we can con The whole goal for me is to make sure that losing is not a habit. You know, can you can you come back? It hasn't and it hasn't been for the the end of the season. But once they had that run in July and August, you kind of see them bounce back every time they did

get a loss, and they bounced back with authority. So let's see if they can do that again coming Saturday off a short turnaround to make sure that this is you know that their focus is now turning into the league and then looking forward.
