We really appreciate it. It's listeners that keep us going.
Greg and I often say we have so much music crammed in our brains, you never know what's going to spill out on any given day. We like to pick a song we can't live without, add it to the Desert Island jukebox, and Mr. Cott, it's your turn. to take that trip. Give us a little hint of what you're going to add to the jukebox today. Jim, I'm going to play a track that connects Tchaikovsky, the beta band guru, port his head.
And? And Isaac Hayes. All right. Well, that's quite a bouillabaisse. We'll find out what exactly you're talking about in a minute on Sound Opinions. Sound Opinions is supported by Goose Island since 1988. Goose Island's been brewing beers in the spirit of Chicago. You can find 312 Weed Ale, Big Juicy Beer Hug, and so many other limited releases at either. of Goose's locations in Chicago, Goose Island Beer Company, Chicago's Beer.
With the $5 meal deal at McDonald's, you pick a McDouble or a McChicken, then get a small fry, a small drink, and a four-piece McNuggets. That's a lot of McDonald's for not a lot of money. Price and participation may vary for a limited time only. All right, Greg, I have no idea what that crazy list of ingredients is going to turn up, but you promised something interesting.
I was doing some research and, of course, you go down a rabbit hole and suddenly you find yourself hitting upon a track made in 1969, written and recorded by a group called Wallace Collection, a Belgian... pop band the name of the song is daydream and it's cool it's a really cool it's a buried orc pop classic i think initially a hit in france and belgium but not really anywhere else this is 1969 right orchestral pop right great bass line strings swimming overhead
flute, some flute accents, but not cheesy flute. And these kind of androgynous vocals. At first I thought it was a woman singing, but it's actually the band's drummer, a guy by the name of Freddie Nyland. It's a very cool track. In fact, so cool that a lot of people sampled or covered it afterwards. And they did a little lifting themselves. There's a melody line in Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.
that sort of undergirds the melody in this particular track. Those European bands of that era just loved to steal from the classics. Well, you know, and when you think about progressive rock, wasn't really that the roots of it, right? So this band was kind of pioneering in that way. was in 1969, remember. So the bass line and a similar arrangement were used by Isaac Hayes on Ike's Rap 2, 1971 track.
I won't misuse you anymore. I won't be cold anymore. And I'll forever keep you in my heart. Classic track. He was a giant in the R&B realm. But he loves this song too. And he says, that bass line's amazing. Where did Isaac Hayes hear it? That's great. Yeah. I mean, Beta Band and Portishead, okay, sure. Great digging in orc pop from the 60s. But Isaac, hmm. Right. And you know, Ike's Rap 2 is kind of the basis for not one but two classics in the trip-hop realm, right? Portishead's Glory Box.
And Tricky, as well, on his debut album. So, two tracks there. This British electronic group, I'm Monster, had a huge UK chart hit with a song called Daydream in Blue riffing on it, kind of in that electronic realm. One of our favorites, Beta Band, used it as part of their song Squares in 2001. Guru mentioned him earlier. He did a track called Hood Dreamin' that did a sped-up sample of this song underneath.
And then our Chicago friend Lupe Fiasco in that track Daydreaming that he featured Jill Scott on has a sample of that track as well. From Bahamas. So this song, Daydream, by Wallace Collection, has had this life for decades beyond its original... And I highly, highly suggest that people give a listen to the original, which I'm going to play now. A little bit of Daydream from the band Wallace Collection on Sound Opinions. Daydream from the Wallace Collection. Where in Belgium were they from?
I'm not sure. I'm not sure. Because I've been there. I wanted to see Waterloo, and also we stayed in Bruges, which is one of the most surreal psychedelic places in the universe. I would love to see if they were from Bruges, but that's the sort of thing. I usually play. I feel like you've usurped me on that one.
