I have Marla joining me and we're going to talk about an event called Light the Night and it's sneaking up towards the end of this month. Thank you for being here. I appreciate you joining us.
Thank you so much for having me. I'm excited to be here and talk about our event here in Sux Falls.
And the event is coming up later this month. So what is the night of the event.
It is so Light the Night this year in Sioux Falls is on Saturday, September twentieth. It is an evening event, so gates will open or park will open about six o'clock and then registration pick up your package about six point thirty. We do a ceremony, a walk around the park, very short little walk, and we finish with fireworks.
Nice and this is happening like at Falls Park?
Is that right? It is? Yes, Falls Park and beautiful location in the evenings so the falls will be lit up. A wonderful opportunity to come out and support blood cancer patients.
And the thing that's really nice about this, this is a great way for people to get together and you've got I thought it was really neat the different colors that represent different things when I had gone to one of the meetings. So let's talk about the different colors because there's people in different stages, and there's different people that are going to be involved, and I would hope some of the people listening would like to get involved as well. We'll chat with them about how they can
do that. But let's talk about the different colors and what they represent.
Yes, absolutely, so our walk is unique. We are the Leukemian Lymphoma Society now Blood Cancer United. We can talk about that later if you like, but we are an organization that supports patients and caregivers who are going through a blood cancer diagnosis. So for the event, we have three lanterns. They are very unique to our event, and we have a white lantern. If you are a survivor, and by survivor, I mean you are surviving from day one of diagnosis, you are considered a survivor in our book,
So you get a white lantern. Red lanterns are for support, so anybody who is a caregiver, a community member, anybody who's there to show support for somebody going through a blood cancer diagnosis. We also have a gold lantern. Gold lanterns are to honor those we have lost a blood cancer And like I said, it happens somewhat close to dark. At the end of our event, we light those lanterns.
White lanterns will light first to show that they are surviving and they are strong, and then we have our gold and our red lighting and we use those lanterns to walk the park. So it's just a beautiful display of community and support and survivorship.
And it's called Light the Night because you literally light the night.
Absolutely, and then we continue to light the night with those fireworks. Don't forget that.
Absolutely. I'm excited for that part too. It's this whole event and I was invited to come and be a part of this, and I'm so excited that we get to do that. It's a beautiful event. It's a really nice thing. And we were talking earlier Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is what this has been known for for years, and now there's a name change, and I think that it's a really positive thing. Not that that was a bad name, but a lot of the time people don't
even know what that means. So now it's Blood Cancer United. I know what blood means, I know what cancer means, I know what united means. I mean to me, I think this is a really smart thing. And again, anytime you do a name change of anything, it can be a bear to do that, but I think this is going to pay off big time because now more people will understand, oh, that's what you do.
So Rudoly, yes, so very intentional. We realize, well, number one Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is quite a mouthful, Like I have to stop myself every time I say it. It's hard to spell. But it really didn't accurately represent who we serve.
So are people that too.
Absolutely, there are over one hundred different types of blood cancer, not just leukemia and lymphomas, and so this name really just more accurately represents who we serve, every patient, every caregiver, every family member that's been touched by any blood cancer.
And again, the event is coming up here. It sounds like it's a long ways away, but it's almost here.
It's less than three weeks. We're heading into two weeks here from the event. So yes, a lot of different ways you can get involved. One is registering and coming and registration is free, so you can go to Lightthnight dot org and sign up and show up. You can sign up as a caregiver, you can sign up as a survivor, you can sign up in memory of someone.
The other thing we offer is you can form a team, so if you have friends and family that wie want to come and join you, you can form a team and come out together and again showing support and celebrating. The other thing we do is fundraising, so if that is something that you are motivated to do, when you register, you have that option of setting up a fundraising page,
send a couple emails, get some support. We obviously are a nonprofit organization and do rely on fundraising, so that's a big piece of our event as well.
Again, the event is coming up here in just a few weeks. Lightthnight dot org is where you go to sign up to be a part of it. And that's also if I want to make a donation, can I do that there as well.
Absolutely, you can go straight to that page make a donation. You can make it directly to the Seux Falls event and it'll go right through.
And what is the night once again for the Seux Falls.
