our guest today is from one of those organizations. We have Heidi joining us right now from Midwest Street Medicine, and I bet you would like them to pick Midwest Street Medicine. Wouldn't you hide, Well, yes, of course I would. Now we would. Let's talk about Midwest Street Medicine. How long have you been around and what does it you guys do. We are a new or a new nonprofit. We started in July last summer. We are mostly volunteer based, started by doctor Shannon Emery last summer, and we
provide healthcare services, addiction services, social services to those experiencing homelessness. And this is something that we've seen a bit of an uptick in our community recently, so it's a good thing that we've got an organization like Midwest Street Medicine there to help. Yes, Street Medicine is a concept that's been around since the nineteen nineties and it is we are bringing it now to the Midwest.
It is new to the suit Falls area. We have over four hundred and your five hundred folks experiencing homelessness just in the sup Falls area and that's our primary area of focus at this time. And if somebody listening would like to get involved for they're going, Man, I've never heard of this, but boy, I would like to help. Are you looking for volunteers right now? We are and you can go to our website at Midwest Streetmedicine dot org
and fill out a form there if you're interested in volunteering with us. We are primarily volunteers of physicians. We have physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, community members, social work, and just a variety of volunteers that are helping provide medical services, addiction services, wound care to those experiencing homelessness.
And Sioux Falls has been blessed to have two of our largest employers in the community, our healthcare systems, and there's several other healthcare companies here outside of those two as well. So there's a lot of people in this community that have the background that have maybe done this for a long time or maybe are still doing this, but would probably find a lot of comfort and also just be really happy to be able to give a little bit of time to help
Midwest Street Medicine. Yes, I would agree. We do have a pool to pull from. I'm actually down in Vermilion and come up to two Falls to help out up in the area. But between Avera, s Handford and the area, we have quite a few volunteers that are able to come in and help and so that's a pretty cool thing. It's a great team. Absolutely well.
