I am excited to talk right now with Becky Rasmussen with Call to Freedom and Becky, you are a busy, busy lady. This time of year, We've got so many
things going on. First of all, this is Human Trafficking Prevention Month, all month long. Tomorrow is Human Trafficking Prevention Day, and you've got some special things kind of kicking off today, don't you.
Absolutely Today we will be lighting up the Arch of Dreams blue for National Human Trafficking Prevention. It'll be January tenth through the sixteenth. You can go downtown, take a picture posted on social media, hashtag wear blue, hashtag end it, and hashtag called the freedom and just build awareness. So that will be happening as well as Saturday, January eleventh will be National Human Trafficking Prevention Day. And we've done this for years where you wear blue and this is
all in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security. So it's a national movement that we're bringing locally through Calls of Freedom, and you can wear blue and then also we do the blue X and you can take a picture with yourself, your co workers, your colleagues, your family members, post it on all your social media platforms, hashtag called the Freedom, hashtag wear blue as well as hashtag ended,
and just share that awareness. Human trafficking is the second largest growing criminal activity and over forty million people are impacted by that, and so we want to make sure that we're spreading awareness through our platforms that we can and keeping that in front of our community for prevention
and awareness time. And then we also if you want to learn more about this issue, on Thursday, January sixteenth, we will have an informational lunch and and you can go to Call Tofreedom dot org and get information and sign up for the luncheon, but also information on all of these events under our events page. But that luncheon really allows you to hear the work that Calls the Freedom is doing as well as what are we seeing
here in South Dakota. If this is kind of a new topic to you, you know, we want to share some of the lived experience of those who walked through the doors have called the freedom, how it's facilitated here, and you'll learn a lot of information and data about the topic of human trafficking as well. And then we are looking at Tuesday February fourth, so we want to schedule in January didn't happen, so we're a little bit into February with some of these events. But Tuesday February fourth,
we will be downtown State Theater. This event is free and we will be doing a special screening of the movie Trapped Doors will open at six events starts at six point thirty. The producer whose name is e. JZ. Cohen, and he is actually coming to South Dakota for a Q and A after the movie, and his experience is that he was actually impacted by somebody who had been trafficked,
learned her story and wanted to make a difference. So he actually interviewed eighty one other survivors across the United States and came up with this movie that he filmed out in North Dakota because he realized that this is happening in rural communities. After interviewing eighty one people. He's like, I want to give a real, true perspective of how this is happening within small communities communities across the United States. And so it's a pretty you know, it's a pretty
close to what we see in South Dakota. And that's why I wanted to show it here in South Dakota to give people really what does this look like. And it features two young girls who have been impacted by sexual abuse, human trafficking, and commercial sexual exploitations. So there's two different storylines that are happening during this movie, but it really gives you a perspective of how it happens in world communities and how nobody's really immune to it
if they're vulnerable and living in vulnerable situations. So got called afreedom dot org to get registered for the movie. We have limited seating and so it is free to the community. So register at called the Freedom dot org
and we'll reserve vie with seats. And then at the end of the movie again we'll do a Q and a question and answer with the producer as well as we'll have two individuals interviewing people as they're exiting about their experience and their thoughts and how the movie impacted them, and those actual interviews will be used nationally to promote the movie. So we're excited about that night and excited to be able to help spread awareness in the month of January and February, and.
Again the thing that's nice the movie is February fourth, so that's out a little ways. Next week, the sixteenth is when that luncheon is, and then again tonight is when they turn the lights blue at the Arch of Dreams downtown. And if you listening to this or going, man, I would love to help somehow, Well, here's the way you can help without even writing a check. You can help by just spreading the word, letting people know, going on social media and using the hashtag wear blue Day,
hashtag called the freedom hashtag ended. Those are simple ways that you can help. Or if you're saying, hey, I'd like to help, and I happen to have a checkbook candy, you can you can certainly make a donation as well, and that is certainly welcome. I call the freedom, isn't.
It It is? We appreciate that, And you know this is every voice matters, every action counts, and together we can make a difference and I want to leave you that this isn't just a call the freedom issue. This is a community issue, and so we welcome our community get involved in John, thank you so much for covering this topic. You know, we need resources to continue this work. You know, in twenty twenty three we serve four hundred and nineteen individuals. In twenty twenty four we end of
the year of serving five hundred and thirty six. Yeah, so we are increasing numbers yearly and the more awareness that goes out, more people that are walking through our doors for services.
Well, thank you for doing what you're doing. And I know it's been a busy month for you guys, but keep up the good work. And again, thank you for taking the time to share with us what you have going on.
Thank you so much for allowing us to have a voice at the table.
