And that is right across the street from the Arena on Russell Street in Sue Falls, and that is this Sunday goes from like eight to noon. I think are the hours. I apologize. I don't have the notes in front of me. This is all going from memory, and I don't have a very good memory, but I do remember pancakes on Sunday.

It was on this day, July fourteenth, nineteen thirty nine, that over twenty four hundred observers claim to watch world renowned track and field star Jesse Owens race a horse, also race a local speedster, and try to break a record circling the bases. All of this took place at an exhibition game between the Crawford's baseball team from what was referred to as the Negro Leagues and the Sioux Falls Canaries. Of course,
many of the spectators could care less about baseball. They were there to see Jesse Owens, the circumstances of the race, or anything but positive. In a ridiculously racially motivated move by the powers that be in USA Track and Field. At the time, Jesse Owens was banned for life from competing in the Olympics. This is after winning four gold medals in the Berlin Olympics in nineteen thirty six, right under the nose and to the blood boiling chagrin of
Adolf Hitler. Jesse didn't join the rest of Team USA in a tour of Europe after the Olympics, but instead came home and did a short circuit of TV and in person appearances across the nation, being gifted small mementos at some of his events. USA Track and Field declared that because he accepted these gifts, also known as payments in their eyes, he was no longer an amateur athlete, but now he was a professional. At the time, Olympics was
strictly an amateur competition, and Jesse was therefore banned. America's hero brought down by his own countryman. As a member of TMSA, Owens had housing, males, transportation, and all of his other needs taken care of. Well. Now he needed to work to pay for these things. After a short stint working as a custodian at his old high school, Jesse began trading on his national celebrity and name recognition. He teamed up with the Crawfords to travel
the nation doing exhibition races. It would be announced that Jesse Owens was coming to town, and the baseball game that might have brought out maybe one hundred or two hundred spectators now saw thousands buying tickets and cramming together to see a national hero. Owens would then split the proceeds from the ticket sales. Many were fortunate to have the opportunity to see Jesse Owens in person here in Sue Falls. But it's painful and downright wrong. What happened to set him on
