first place. Right, And I'll like, this is the time of year that it does bring in a lot of people because you know, we have aches and pains, we overdated gardening or yard cleaning what not. But then we talk about, you know, maintaining your health because when your new things shows up and it kind of compounds out the old stuff that you have gone on, you know, typical back pain, headaches, neck pain, that kind of stuff, it's all compounds. It makes it a lot longer to
get better. It takes forever you're not feeling so good. Versus we talk about, you know, maintenance care. We've been getting rid of your older existing problems. So when it's something new shows up, like straining your back, raking leaves or something like that or bought in your head that too. You know, your body gets through it so much faster. You're got to heel much faster because you're not having to deal with all the old normal aches

It was on this day May tenth, eighteen seventy eight, that demanded by the name of John E. Colton comes to Sioux Falls. He hires RF Pedigrew to help him claim a piece of land north of Sioux Falls, and works with Pedigrew long enough to help raise money
to bring his family here and to build an estate. When his family arrives, John E. Colton, his family, and a few neighbors, including John Goodard, built the community of Taupie. The community was named after American Indian chief Taupie, who refused to abandon his newly established Christian faith and attack settlers during the Sioux Uprising of eighteen sixty two. Taupe instructed his warriors to protect settlers and used his influence to try to bring peace to the region.
There's so many pieces to this story I find absolutely intriguing. We're taught by the history books that pioneers and American Indians, especially the Sioux, were bitter enemies in the late eighteen hundreds. Somehow, not much as said about Tappy, and those who like him were focused more on peace. On the flip side of that coin, our histories don't often mention men like John Colton, who made such an honorable gesture in naming his new community after a man that
history might tell us would have been the enemy. Unfortunately, many years later the community of Tape would be incorporated as a city and it would be changed to Colton, South Dakota, and the story of the original name is mostly forgotten. I think we owe it to Chief Taupy and to John Colton to remember the sacrifice, bravery, and respect both men showed to each other. That was long before any of the history books were written or the official town's
