always am because to Falls is the best hitting in the world. I'm excited every time. You know what? I agree? It's a great, great place. And you are you originally from here? Is this your hometown or an a rays playboy? Yeah? I love it every time I come home, I get so excited. And you've been doing comedy now for a long long time. I remember watching you at a little place called Nitwitz, So that's spent a little bit ago. How long have you been performing stand up
comedy, Sean, I want to say like fifteen years. Didn't we do it together one time? In a comedy contest? Am I crazy? I think? So? I don't. We might have. I did a comedy contest there at Knitwitz. We did it was the very first time. It was either it was either the very first time I ever did stand up or it was about nine months in. They had two contests and they really never did it again. But yeah, you were on one of them. I
remember it well. The contest that I did, I had only done one at Knitwitz and I won it, So I don't know if that was the same one. I think you were already doing comedy by the time I did that, though I might have been. So when I started, it was a comedy contest and I won that contest. So look at us a couple of contests, winn there we go, Look at us over here. That's
awesome knowing about it, Sean is such a funny guy. For folks that haven't had a chance to see this guy, you're going to get a chance. He's going to be here for Snowjam. But you've done comedy all over the place now and I got to see you on television. I was just watching that, like, that's my boy right there. I know this guy. How cool was that to be on national television doing stand up comedy. It's amazing. I mean, I you know, that's why I think about
being from Two Falls and I talk about Two Falls all the time. I talk about South Dakota as much as I can. And it's just cool knowing that you can do it from home. I know, Like that was a big thing for me. I was like, man, it's going to be tough to do what I want to do from Two Falls, but then you stay at it and you can do it. I don't know, it was great. It was really surreal. I was so I tried to get him to let me wear a shirt that said two Falls on it, but they
wouldn't let me do it. Did you had to like wear a tie and everything, didn't you? They stayed a dressed like you're going to a really nice dinner. So I was like i'd wear a suit fall shirt to a really nice inner and where they wouldn't writing Sean, you're wearing cut off shorts in a wife beater. What's going on, man? Well, you said a nice dinner, so I dressed up, so yeah, exactly, Otherwise I'd be naked. So this is really exciting to have you here for Snowjam.
And this is happy and sad. I'm happy that we're going to have it as sad because this is the final snow Jam. Yeah, it's I've toyed with the idea of trying to start a comedy festival myself in Portland and just the preliminary process seems so incredibly daunting. I can't imagine what it's like to actually do it and execute it seems so hard, so many moving parts, and they do such a good job. I always want to come home
for it, but it's just sometimes it's just not practical. But yeah, for this one, I of course, since the last one, there's no I wouldn't miss it or anything. Well, And I was on the board for Snowjam Comedy Festival a few years ago and I was I was excited for the selection process until I was part of the selection process, and then I'm
watching this and we have to grade every comic. We're like, okay, I give them this score and this score and the score, and then you know, some of the people that I thought were the funniest, others didn't think were as funny. Everybody sends a humor is different. But the thing that really I didn't like is when it was all done, then like we
we only select this small number of people. There's like thirty comics out of hundreds that submit stuff, and I'm like, I got to be the one to tell them, sorry, you don't get to come and be a part of this. It's an interesting thing. I mean, it's all subjective. There's plenty of people that think I'm not funny. They're extremely wrong, but oh they'll feel that way. No, I mean, you don't ever have to think anyone's funny ever, It's all it's all up to your personal preference.
And I feel like one of the most fun things for me about doing stand up is that you just try to get through to everybody, because it's a challenge. Sometimes especially do take this the wrong ways to balls, But some people in the crowd can look a little upset sometimes like when you if I go home and I just see like a couple couple of big dudes, so I'm like, man, they do not want to be here. Doesn't mean they don't. They just have the look of somebody who might look like
they're not going to have a good time. So when you see him have a good time, that's like the best feeling in the world where you're like, yes, it's fun. It's always fun. You know. I just made the guy that was frowning the whole time, I made him laugh. That's a win. It's always a w baby. I will take it. And that's again one of my favorite things about coming home is just being like
being where I started doing it all right there. It's the best almost we're all grown up now, all my friends, like none of us are flat broke anymore, so we can go like hang out afterwards, enjoy enjoy the night. I love it. I love every part of it. And really it began for him on a pretty ordinary January third back in nineteen ninety seven. On that day, he started his career in Washington, d C. As South Dakota's
only congressman in the House of Representatives. But for Thune, January third is the gift that just kept on giving. The swearing in ceremony in nineteen ninety nine was January sixth, but thun was sworn in again as a congressman in two thousand and one after defeating Senate Majority Leader Tom Dashel in a tight race. In two thousand and four, John took office as a US Senator on
