Episode description

Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.

The Vancouver Whitecaps continue an epic 2025 with a 2-0 win in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup over Inter Miami in front of a huge crowd at BC Place. Brian White and Sebastian Berhalter scored the goals for the Whitecaps. White has established himself in my opinion as the best option up top for the USMNT right now, while Berhalter is pushing hard for inclusion in the squad for this summer's Gold Cup. You can't count Miami out going back to Ft. Lauderdale, but they will need another huge 2nd leg performance at home in this competition to get to the final.

In Orlando Saturday night, Atlanta United will look for the response that has been lacking at times in 2025 as they face the Lions. Neither team has scored in their last two matches, Orlando has had three straight 0-0 draws, we'll see if either can find their shooting boots for this one. Pregame coverage starts at 6pm on 92.9 The Game and the Audacy app with Abe Gordon and Madison Crews from our Colony Square studios in Midtown Atlanta, Mike Conti and I will take over from Orlando ahead of the 7:25pm kickoff.

Evander will try to score in his fourth straight match for Cincinnati as they host Kansas City this weekend. Charlotte will try to keep pace with Cincinnati and win their 9th straight at home as they host New England. LAFC hosts St. Louis in Sunday Night Soccer, Denis Bouanga has scored in the last two matches for LAFC and even Olivier Giroud scored for LAFC last time out in that wild 3-3 draw with Portland. Andre Blake could join 8 other goalkeepers in the history of the league with his 80th shutout if he can achieve that against DC United on Saturday.

World Sevens Football, a 7v7 women's competition that will see 8 teams compete for a $5 million prize pool in the first event next month in Portugal. Ajax, Manchester United, Benfica, and Bayern Munich will send teams to play in the event.

Auckland FC could clinch the regular season title in the A-League this weekend with a draw, they would be the first New Zealand club to achieve that feat in Australia's top flight. Teams have won the regular season in their first season in the league, but no one has done the double with the Grand Final. Auckland FC will be trying to change that.

The Copa Del Rey final is Saturday with Barcelona favored over Real Madrid. The rumors about Brazil's interest in Carlo Ancelotti continue to heat up, with Jorge Jesus seen as a clear second choice to the current but maybe not for long Real Madrid manager.

FA Cup semifinals this weekend will see Nottingham Forest try to defeat Manchester City for the second time in as many months while Aston Villa tries to find some success at Wembley against a struggling Crystal Palace side.

The finalists will be determined for the UEFA Women's Champions League this weekend as well. Barcelona have a three-goal cushion going to London to face Chelsea, trying to reach their 5th straight final as they go for the ThreePeat. Lyon's late winner in London in the first leg gives them the home advantage against Arsenal 2-1.

Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso on the SDACH Network. I'm Jason Longshore and this is brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. Vancouver white Caps. They've become a soccer powerhouse, especially the season under Yesper Sohwordnson. They lead Miami to nail after the first leg of the CONCA CAF Champions

Cup semi finals. Goals from Brian White and Sebastian Berhalter have given the white Caps that lead going to Fort Lauderdale next week. Jasper Shortensen's team, playing in front of fifty three, eight and thirty seven at BC Place, put on an incredible performance keeping Miami off the board. Crowd was rocking the whole time. Brian White gets the goal, his tenth and fifteen games for Vancouver in all competitions this season. That's your starter right now for the US

men's national team. Sebastian Burhalter, he set up the first goal, he scored the second. That should be a player in the US men's national team right now. Incredible work from Jasper Sorenson the Vancouver white Caps Miami can't count them out, not with all that talent, not in the second leg at home, but the white Caps have a great advantage going on the road for leg two. Let's talk about MLS This weekend. Atlanta will head down to Central Florida

for a match against Orlando City. Pregame coverage will start at six o'clock on ninety two nine the game and The Odyssey app a Gordon Madison Cruz from the Colony Square Studios, Mike Contia and I will take over in Orlando. Kickoff is set for seven twenty five PM, a little bit earlier start time. Game is also being broadcast on FS one, so a little bit different setup here. Seven to fifteen for the broadcast, start seven to twenty five for the kick. Will we see goals? Atlanta hasn't scored

in their last two. Orlando hasn't scored in their last three. Three straight scoreless draws for Orlando. Pedroc aless has been great Atlanta. We've got to see a response. It's been the word of the season so far, is response. We haven't seen it enough in side of matches. We need to see it here in a response to a poor performance in Philadelphia last week, Will we we will all find out together on the radio. Hopefully you can join us. Miami. Coming off of the two Nino loss of Vancouver, they're

still unbeaten in league play. They'll return home to host Dallas on Sunday. What do they have left in the tank? Dallas very good on the road this season two oho and three. They have not lost away from Frisco Texas Vancouver. They got to go to Minnesota to face the Loons on Sunday. Minnesota is unbeaten at home so far this season.

I wonder if Vancouver heavily rotates. They've rotated a lot this season, so it's not crazy for them to do that, but I wonder if they heavily rotate to be as fresh as possible for the Conka CAF semi final next week. LAFC they host St. Louis in the Sunday night soccer match in LA four points in their last two matches for the Black and goal Denny Bwanga has scored in both of them. Olivia shar Rude has finally scored for LAFC. Now Saint Louis haven't won in their last five. They've

been great defensively this season. They've only conceded six goals, but they've only scored five. Does that change in this one? Can their defense keep them in It is going to be really the question, And can they steal something? I'm thinking no. With the form that LAFC is in right now. Evander for Cincinnati, He's going to try to score in his fourth straight match. They host Kansas City in one of the early games on Saturday. Kansas City did win

their first road match last week in San Jose. In their last twelve attempts, they won a crazy five to three game out in California. Tied with Cincinnati. At the top of the East is Charlotte. They host New England Saturday night. Charlotte's five and zero at home this season. They've won eight straight at home dating back to last September. Incredibly confident team right now. They should be able to keep that confident train rolling on against the Revolution. Columbus

they host San Jose on Saturday night. San Jose's trying to bounce back from conceding five goals at home to SKC last weekend. One other thing to keep an eye on Andre Blake. If he gets a clean sheet against DC United on Saturday, he would become the second fastest goalkeeper to reach eighty career shutouts in MLS history, trailing only Brad Guzanne, who reached the milestone in his two

hundred and fifty first career regular season match. Blake would be the ninth goalkeeper in league history to get to eighty clean sheets. DC's coming in after a really good win last week. Philadelphia's coming in after a really good win last week should be a fun one on Saturday. Other news from around the world, The New World Seven's Football Series got your first four entrants. We've talked about this the Espresso before. IAKS, Bayern, Benfica, and Manchester United

will participate. The first event is going to be May twenty first through the twenty third in Portugal. Games will be seven aside, two fifteen minute has on fields half the size of a regulation pitch. You guys, a lot of you have played seven aside, so you kind of know what that'll look like. Eight women's teams are going to compete in this. You've got four already with IAX, Bayern, Benfica,

Manchester United. It's not exactly the same as Unrivaled, which was a huge success in its first season, but it's kind of along those lines in terms of a smaller sided version of the game outside of normal league competition. I think the difference in this is you have your established teams and brands that are participating in this. I think there's a lot of potential to it. It's going to be fascinating. Dezone will stream the tournament globally. I'm

very intrigued. I will want to check in on this and see how it looks. For more women's teams to be announced joining that term, and then there's going to be more events all over the world. The Friedkin Group, which owns Everton, they've added and new investor Jason Kidd, Dallas Mavericks head coach, huge Premier League fan, was previously involved in a bid to buy Crystal Palace. He's now part of the ownership group at Everton, Liverpool and Byron.

They can clinch their league titles this weekend, as has been expected for a while. Maybe the bigger surprise in teams that can clinch a trophy this weekend is Auckland f C. They only need a point to win the A League regular season title in their first season and will be the first New Zealand side to do that the league does have a playoff structure, and we have seen teams come in in their first year and win the regular season, but then they didn't win the grand final.

Can Auckland f Se get that done? We watching I'm intrigued by this one. Games this weekend Copa del Rey final Barcelona and Real Madrid is going to be at four o'clock on Saturdays. Won the super Cup earlier this year. They beat Real Madrid five to two in the final of that one. They're in charge with a four point lead at the top of La Liga over Madrid. Real Madrid have lost their last three meetings with Barcelona in

a competitive competition, so everything pointing towards Barsa. With that in mind, Carlo Ancelotti his name keeps coming up about other jobs. He's once again the front runner for the Brazilian national team job. According to ESPN Brazil. We've been talking about this for weeks now. He's the number one candidate. The federation is not ruling out Jorge j Zeus as a contender either, though formerly at Flamingo, he is now

at Al Heilal. He has a contract until after the end of the FIFA Club World Cup, but he could leave early to take Brazil. Brazil wants somebody in place for their qualifiers in June. They've got a cushion in terms of qualification for the World Cup, but it's not a big one. They want somebody in place for those June games. They're trying to get Ancelotti or Hey, Jazus is the backup plan. FA Cup semi Finals this weekend.

Crystal Palace and Aston Villa Palace enter the fixture with a four game winless run, but they're unbeaten in four against Villa. Villa have won five of their last six, but they have lost six of their last eight trips to Wimbley. I have no idea what those numbers tell you. That game sounds very strange because of those streets. Nottingham Forest in Manchester City is the other match. The first

ones on Saturday, City and Forest is on Sunday. City are on a six game unbeaten run in the Premier League. They've only lost one of their last six league encounters against Nottingham Forest, but that loss was last month. So we shall see if Nuno Espirito Santo's interesting style that we talked about earlier this week, a different way of playing low possession but not high pressing football that has been working. Can it work against City did last month?

We'll see if it works again this time around to get to an FA Cup final. Also UEFA Women's Champions League semi final second legs this weekend. Chelsea trailing Barcelona for one going into the second leg in London. Barsa are trying to get to their fifth straight final and win their third straight title. Leone, who has been to a whole bunch of finals. They host Arsenal. They are leading to one. They got a late winner in London last time out. Looks like it will be Barcelona and Leon,

which would be an epic final. If you get an epic comeback from either Chelsea or Arsenal, that would add to the drama for that upcoming final next month. Looking forward to all of it this weekend, looking forward to heading down to Orlando with Atlanta United again. Broadcast starts at six o'clock on ninety two nine. The game in the Audyssey app kickoff is at seven to twenty five, and we will be telling you the whole story from Inter and Co Stadium. Thanks for listening and watching and
