And I'm not calling anyone out. And I'm like and then there's some people who who don't do these things and they stand out. Do you and you want to stand out. If you're listening to this podcast, you're Keener Central.
Do you think that you've you've committed any of these? Now that you're doing the interview and be like oh
So I have... Okay, I've...
And then you can share yours. An anecdote. Nice. But I will say I
My family in general is a very Etiquette is a very So I definitely And so I feel like I in some ways that was actually Blessing'cause I really got it drilled into me. Um but at the No, and they just may not know.
¶ Professional Interview Attire
Tip number one.
Tip number one.
To dress and The rule of them Should never ever read. Dressed up. Overdo it. No low cut text. You know, you because that's That is something you can do. No toes in the Just When you look better you feel better. I'm not saying just I'm not saying you need to wear that forever, um but for like People stand out when they dress professionally. And not Right away you're like wow this person.
Yeah, they're they've put some thought in the right. That's a really and that's a and that's a really good one. It's such it's such a valuable.
Oh I don't know if I should don't wear it then.
Oh jeez, don't wear it. Just don't. Like play it.
As much as we like to think Especially if you're meeting some. Yeah.
Professionalism matters.
Yeah, send out a message.
And I think it matters.
¶ Optimizing Your Resume for Success
Another thing, you guys, this is so easy and some people do it, but not a lot of people.
Is this tip two?
Yeah.
Okay, tip two.
Yeah.
I didn't know if this was like a bullet point on tip one.
Not not a subpoint. This is like
Maybe I'll throw one in.
This is something that can so easily set you apart and because not everyone's doing it. I My sister bigger. So I was so lucky'cause she told me my first interview, she's like, You have I'm Shannon, don't you frickin' forget it. Resume paper.
Quality paper.
Yeah, like we're getting full blown cardstock. Because I would show up to my interviews, you guys, and underview. And I would. Whoa. Like, you know, this they're like, this girl's not messing around. Like this girl you remember in Legally Blonde?
say that. Yes.
Yes, when when when Al Woods gives the resume and they're like, Oh my gosh, it's scented
On pink paper.
Be a keener. We love keeners, okay? Have some resumes printed out, be prepared. That looks so good when You are you know what I always say? Eliminate work. If it's extra work for them to pull up your resume, eliminate the work. Make life easier for them, you know? Do everything Make life easier for them. I am like all about making life easier for people. I'll make try to make life easier for my clients. I'll try to make life make So that is just like a Highly record.
Whoa, like you're old school and I'm here for it. Here
That makes so much sense. Sword through all this nonsense.
And the resume said You leave it on their desk, now they have it in their room, they're gonna see your name.
Quick little question about a resume. How long is too long of a resume? Because I know I know most people, they do a resume and it's like, oh.
If your resume is not a little bit of a And I'm gonna tell you No, you gotta get this. I I'm I'm also seeing some of the And then other resumes I look at I'm like. You know, an extra set of eyes can make all the difference, but no, the rule of thumb and once No one has over two pages. And I remember No one can.
Yeah, yeah.
Another thing and I'm not
Fun, adventure.
Like photography. Like no. If you can't prove it in a court of law, don't put it on your resume. So if you can't prove, yes, I did this at work, yes, I have proof. Because then everyone else can say it.
And people skim it, they don't even look at it. It's a waste of space. And when I see it, I'm just like, okay, next. Not next applicant.
No, you can't prove it. It's just fluff. Yeah. Yeah. Um okay, anyways, yeah. Resumes is a whole thing. Exactly. I have done cementing on But we're like, whoa because I am cutthroat on resumes and I will
And you have a unique ability to be blunt. But at the same time. Nice about it.
I try. Sometimes I feel like yeah.
You can tell some you you I've I've seen you do it and you've done it. You can tell someone that what they're doing sucks, but they don't get it's like I don't know, you have a good skill.
Yeah. In a positive way. Because feedback is so important. And I think that it's such
It is a sensitive.
To deliver.
Nobody likes to be told.
And it's so different to the first.
¶ The Power of Follow-Up
So let's recap so far.
Yeah.
Bring three resumes.
So you can hold white. On very nice. Love it. Okay. A follow-up email after. Yeah. Even if they say like just always that is I have heard from You know like Really important.
But that evening perhaps.
Don't send it weeks later. Send a follow up email. Thank you so much for your time. And even if say, okay, say you interview and you're like, I don't know if that's the best fit for me, you can say thank you so much. Thank them. Speech with all your life. And that seems like such a So it's like if you're coming, you're dressed super professionally. You're already so far ahead of time. All these little things were Because these are things. And they make a big difference. So
Honestly, talk about this forever. If you want to just dive in more, like if you're having bad luck at an orange. I've also got to be able to do that. I got the job. She's like it was so helpful. Um so anyways, um I'm happy to talk all about interviews and but I just felt like I gotta I need we need to chat.
You're you're in it right now and you've learned I think people need to know this.
Yeah.
From what I'm gathering the overarching theme.
And but I wanna end on a positive note. Like when you know better you Because I just thought of a time on the other.
Let's let's hear.
I rem I still remember it. I was so nervous. And they were like so tell us a little bit.
Like what made you choose this company? That's I've come to learn. That is always a question. Yes.
I literally looked at her. Maybe advice guys. Try to lie. And I Like I don't I literally I think she knew I was like. She gave me advice in the interview. She's like, You need to I think But she was like, And I thought that was such a valuable lesson, and it's pretty obvious now I've got So I have a lot of empathy'cause we've all been there where we just genuinely And your intentions are
Just didn't know and it didn't even cross your mind. So it's like I don't feel like if anything, that's why I have this podcast because it's like I and the mentorship meetings, I I want to help. Yeah. People be the best themselves and thrive. Like I wanna help you, but like when you don't know, you don't know. And so anyways, I'm that's I'm trying to just share like I've been there. Yeah. I learned that mit in undergrad and
Well that's the thing, it's these things that they seem so like common sense but they're not
They're not
Once once you do it you're like, Oh that makes so much sense. But like yeah, like you said. You don't know, you don't know.
Yeah.
¶ Research, Authenticity, and Confidence
It's another t tip for ya. Um, do some research and like have some because that's another thing. People stand out when you can tell that they've actually like
Yeah.
They know they have like things they say, examples to say. And like make it genuine. Like I would because if you can't genuinely say a few things while you actually want to work at this specific place and it's not some general statement. It's kinda like why are you even applying there? Okay, but I wanna end it off with
Truly, after
I love when I can tell when someone has
Yeah.
And I'll take on the any day over them sharing that they don't know an answer, over them sharing that they are like confused about. Over the I will always take honesty over anything. Just be honest and be yourself because you are so much more appealing when you are your own self rather No one is this. So just genuinely that should become a big Be yourself.
I've seen so many different personalities shine through and I like love getting to know But there's some people where I can tell they're not going to be able to do that. yourself because honestly you'd all be better off just being yourself and owning And like no one is Are you able to take feedback? Are you kind? Are you If you are taking a chance on interviews for speech pathology jobs, you're definitely twenty million steps ahead. Like a hundred percent.
Yeah. And I don't like when podcasters say things like that'cause it's like oh give me a break, but I genuinely You are literally choosing. So you're already like that's
Yeah, you're good. You're you're being very proactive.
Very proactive. Gosh, I've had all these interviews and I never did that. It's fine when you know better, you do better. It's like Just helpful advice that I can. Forward just to know. And if you already know that, like maybe it's hell friend. You know, it's how I just tell like talking to my mentee, and I'm like, you should share these things with your friends because sh you know, not everyone knows, and not everyone has an older sister or has a parent who's all on.
So that's my thoughts. Do you have any final words for everyone Robin?
I think that advice is Job interview.
I hope it's helpful and Um Follow at Rob T.
Um
And yes. Oh my god, that's a whole nother world. People on this podcast are like, Who is that? Okay. Anyways, um thank you for joining me, Rob. I didn't really want to talk to myself today, so appreciate it.
I love talking to you and all your SLPs out there are doing
I respect the heck out of it. So keep doing what you're doing.
