In 1948, the lifeless body of a man dressed in suit and tie, would be found leaning against the concrete seawall of Somerton Beach in Adelaide, Australia. The well-dressed man had no physical signs of trauma, no identification, and the tags of his cloths had been removed. The mystery man’s cause of death and identity eluded local police. An extensive search was conducted hoping to discover his identity including having newspapers worldwide publish the man’s face. As the police deepened their investigation, the mystery of the dead man did as well. The few possessions belonging to the man offered few clues to his identity, but investigators would find a torn piece of paper on him that read “Tamám Shud,” which is Farsi for, “it is finished.” To date, his identity and origin has never been officially identified, remaining unsolved and filed as a cold case. Over the decades, several theories have emerged suggesting that the mysterious figure could have been anyone from a spy to a heart-broken lover. After more than 70 years, The Tamám Shud,”Case or The Mystery of the Somerton Man might have a new lead on the identity of the mysterious dead man. The biggest development was in May of 2021 when the mystery man’s body was exhumed and Derek Abbott, a professor at the University of Adelaide claimed that his DNA analysis and genealogy tracing has identified the Somerton Man as Carl Webb a Melbourne-born electrical engineer. However, it will take years of DNA testing to confirm this claim. So, was the mystery dead man of Somerton beach a spy, heart-broken lover or simply and electrical engineer with a dark past.
