Thirty-six-year-old Andrea Yates who had history of mental illness and postpartum depression was a stay-at-home-mom, home schooling her five young children, 7-year-old Noah, 5-year-old John, 3-year-old Paul, 2-year-old Luke, and 6-month-old Mary. Throughout the years of having children Andrea was treated for her severe postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis, and schizophrenia with anti-psychotic medications and antidepressants. On the morning of June 20, 2001, Andrea made a 911 call, stating that she needed police officers dispatched to her home in Houston, Texas. When officers arrived, Andrea confessed to methodically killing all five of her children by drowning them one at a time in the bathtub at her home. In 2002, a jury would convict Andrea of capital murder and was sentenced to life in prison with a chance of parole after 40 years. However, Andrea’s defense attorney would appeal her conviction on the grounds of her lack of mental stability during the trial. At her retrial in July of 2006, Andrea would be found not guilty by reason of insanity. The court would have her committed to the high-security North Texas State Hospital in Vernon, Texas where she received medical treatment. In January of 2007, Andrea was moved to the low security mental hospital, Kerrville State Hospital located in Kerrville, Texas where she remains today having spent a third of her life institutionalized. So, were these heinous drownings of young children committed by a sinister mind or was Andrea Yates truly suffering from mental health issues that led to her drowning her children.
