Ep 8 - Our Own Backstories

I get to do that now because I used to edit the podcast versions of the show and I hated it because I would always say hi first, and I hate the sound of my own voice. But now I don't do it anymore. Noodle does it, so Hello, Hi, Hi. Everybody.

Your voice is fine, peebe, you don't have to worry. I think everybody hates the sound of their own voice, unless maybe maybe not, maybe not. No, I love the sound of my voice. That's amazing, fantastic. I get that too. All right, cool, I'll just go die in a hole over here. I hate my voice. Your voice is good too. Shut up. You all have great voices. I could listen to all of you talk, all this fantastic voices all across the board, all across the board, all around. I am. I am upset though,

because I went. I got I got my vision tests and everything this week, and I got some new glasses. But uh, I go to this place, this local place that's nearby. I used to do a lot of work with them when I was a graphic designer and uh, we just have a good relationship. They give me like massive discounts. When I go there, they take like a huge chunk off. But I have to wait a long time for the glasses, so I'm bummed that I didn't have them

for today. I'm like, it's like I'm also waiting to go because I gotta I gotta update my driver's license and I want to like take a new picture with my new like nice hip glasses and you know, and and actually not look like a slob. When I go to take the picture my most recent driver's license photo, my like, my eyes are wide open. I look like I've just seen some like a ghost or something. It's great. I love it. Sorry, I didn't mean I mean to be fair.

Peebee, you do make that face like a solid sixty to seventy? Yeah, do the hand thing? Yeah, all right, now look at the now, look at them, No, look at those all right? All right, please don't smile? All right? Great? Wait? What was that anyway? All right? I guess we're printing it. Do you have any fact because you should now that I should now and now that I do the hands, I should just I should just have one and the other flapping hands you go. However, here in this in this show, the players do that to themselves. They do that to themselves via horrible, horrible roles. But uh, we'll see what happens today. I will say that today is a it's probably going to be a really big episode. I don't it's hard

to time. I mean, it's hard to time things appropriately. Uh, when the players are just so good at doing nothing, they're just yeah, it's called man, you sound like my mind. Thanks, I'm sorry. If you guys haven't seen the show before, you're probably gonna be weirded out. This is definitely a weird show to catch if you've never seen it before. It is a it's a strange concept that I came up with quite a while ago, where the the players are playing themselves trapped in a virtual world, and uh, they are in New min Era of the Ninth World.

They've been given beta access to these virtual reality rigs called VRT rigs, and they've been given beta access to this to this world, New min Era, the Ninth World, the world that is about a billion years in Earth's future. It is Earth, but it is a very different Earth. The landscape has changed dramatically, and the damn man for Fox a PB Can I flip? Do you know if I can flip it? No, it's fine,

it's working here. It's so mind it worked fine, it worked, It was working okay, Well it's mirrored for me, so I wasn't sure so anyway before I was so rudely interrupted. The world in general is a very different place from the Earth that we know. Anything that you can imagine that might have happened to the Earth in a billion years has probably happened. There have been times where humanity has left the Earth. There have been times when

alien presence presence. Alien presences have sort of existed here on the Earth, and there's been times when artificial intelligence has lived here on the Earth, and it's sort of become a part of the landscape, a DNA in the people's DNA, like there are there are crazy automatons, and the animal classifications that

we have have sort of been thrown at the wayside. You know, you will see animals that are part robot and part mammal and part reptile, and it's all a big mix, and there's not really the same system of classification that you can go by. There are things that are incredibly strange, things that do not make sense. And there are nanomachines that exist all across this world, and there are people that are in touch with those nano machines.

There's an actual type sort of similar to a class in this game, but still different nanos, and they they can sort of interact with the with the nanomachines that make their way across the world, and people see that as a sort of magic. It's their interpretation of magic, seeing nanos interact with these nanomachines and seeing them create all kinds of wondrous things. The people see as magic, and the world is littered with devices known as a New min Era,

a combination of technologies that are beyond the people that live here. Imagine sort of giving an iPhone away to someone in the Middle Ages. It would serve as a flashlight. It wouldn't really serve as a phone or you know all the different things and apps that can run on it. It would it would be a light until the battery ran out, and then it would get discarded, maybe used as a paperweight of some kind or an impromptu hammer. It's not going to be used the same way, and that's the way that

a lot of these devices function. They'll get one shot, one use, and then they're kind of discarded or taking apart and reimagined into other devices by skilled people. And that's the kind of world that we're living in. that world or the outside world. this world, are visible on Twitch. They still have Twitch dreams that are going and Chat is sort of role playing from the perspective of watching their their Twitch dreams. So they've seen everything. Uh it was described what was described to you was that they've seen what was going on. I'm gonna vomit, so Sam, we will uh pop back into things chat. We're gonna start with Pumpkinberry today, have fun later. So players, if you can Okay, your headsets and close chat bye, pe me good luck you think you thank you? Okay. So when we last left off with Pumpkinberry, uh PB. Yes, you had just left the ship where you had a pretty horrible experience in general with the person known as Fang who had kidnapped you and had threatened your life. Yeah, you had. You had done everything that he had kind of asked of you, and it didn't

look like it was going to work out. Well, you took things into your own hands and you stabbed him when he was asleep in his neck, okay, killing him. The ship still had a day worth of travel that

you had sort of stayed awake through. You powered through, kind of guarded the door, and you snuck off of the ship in uh probably anticipation of them finding Fang, and well you uh getting in trouble for that, I'm assuming made your way off in the city of Bridges and you were heading to the area known as high Port. One of the fish vendors in town had sort of pointed it out towards you and again just to just to reminisce a

little bit here. The city, as you can guess by the name, is made up of bridges and sort of a lot of buildings sort of stacked up on top of each other. It's very large. There's a lot of small shacks and houses and things that are all kind of built up on top of each other. There's a lot of salt damage, you know, from the from the ocean and such. From the map, it looks very like it might be covered in rust, and everything's made of iron and things like

that. It's very cool. There's also a lot of places that aren't rust damage, metals and things that you've never seen before. Maybe they should have they should be covered in rust, but they're just not. And uh, it's it's fairly busy, and it's it's right before night. It's probably right about dusk at the moment. And I really wish that these sounds would be

playing, but they're just not working right now. Let's try and reload World twenty see if that fixes it, because I have some great Harbor sounds that I uploaded and they're just not working. I hear them, I don't and the stream doesn't. And uh, no offense, but I want to. I just was trying to help you troubleshoot. Okay, Okay, there we go. Harbor sounds are playing, so uh, you make your way towards the area known as high Port, which is a little bit more built up

than a lot of the rest of these places. You Uh, you can see there's a bunch of docks that are sort of down. You kind of have to climb some stairs to make your way up into this area, and you can hear there's a few people that are just trying to sell the last bit of their wares before it goes before it goes dark, there's lights that are starting to get illuminated, you know, kind of like street lights. As soon as dusk starts to happen, they sort of kick on in various

places around the town. And you were, I believe, looking for some kind of in this fish vendor sort of Yeah, I had. I had asked him and he had pointed the way, and so that's I kind of went to the inn and yeah, I probably would have just I don't know if I would have slept right away, I would have does food come included?

I don't have to rp this part out if you don't want, like, I'm happy to uh curious, Uh, the the it probably would have cost we can say three shins, okay, and they maybe would have given you like a meal and that would be for the night, okay, okay, So then I definitely would have very nervously like counted out my shin and had them help, you know, kind of like make sure that I was doing it right, or and then I would have I would have eaten because

I'm starving. I would have bathed because I'm filthy and I smell terrible, and then I probably would have just wept on the bed for a while, and then I probably would have fallen asleep eventually, Okay, wake up with a headache. Do you think he can fall asleep? It's tricky. I do have a past history with insomnia, and sometimes the weirdest thing will keep me awake. But I imagine I was actually crying pretty hard, so I

do think I probably would have fallen asleep. But I probably wasn't paying attention enough to drink a glass of water before I went to bed, so I probably wake up with a headache. And yeah, I probably was able to sleep, considering I spent like two days not sleeping because of the high pressure. And now that that high pressure situation is over and I'm in the inn, i'd be thinking about. You know, I feel like I know the logical thing to do in that situation. You know, he'd stabbed me,

he threatened to kill an entire ships worth of people. He was going to sell me into slavery in an unknown world. I feel like, logically that was definitely the right thing to do do. I think I could have gotten out of there not taking advantage of the fact that he was sleeping. Probably not. I don't think I can. You know, I'm smaller than him, I can't best him. That was my best option out of there. This is an MMO. I it's a game, but what if it isn't?

And that's probably what's keeping me up and upsetting me so much, is that if I am stuck here and we do feel the consequences of our action here, then I I potentially killed a like, you know, thirteen year old kid, which I find incredibly upsetting. But I think what I find more upsetting is that part of me probably was like, but you don't know if that's actually the case, and the odds are that this is still just a game and he got logged out after. But what haunts me is I

didn't actually know for sure and I still did it. I still took the risk, and that's what's fucking me up. I think, Yeah, your room in general is pretty small. I think it's a little reminiscent of the

room that you actually had aboard the ship. Oh A lot, A lot of the construction around here is kind of similar, similar to like materials, some metals and things, and it has that sort of jewels varnish kind of vibe to it that's sort of ten thousand leagues under the sea kind of look, I think, with a sort of brass colored metals, and that's almost

steampunky kind of aesthetic. And there's you know, there's a there's a window like out out and outside, you know, sort of and you can you can see it's it's gotten dark probably before you can even really think about it. How much shin do you have left? I had twenty five, so the room was three Okay, so not a lot. Okay, I'm assuming literally everything costs more than what I have. And this was mostly his money, right, I don't know what I rubbed from him, actually, So

I didn't roll for that or anything. You found that you found that device on him, that name and era, you tried to sort of understand it. Do you take any more cracks at that before you go to sleep? Not before I go to sleep, now, probably in the morning when I'm

feeling a little bit more refreshed. But to be honest with you, it's you know, I know how I am after a very stressful, fright night when I'm playing a scary game, and afterwards I just need to shut down and then I and then I usually sleep like the dead, So that's probably exactly what happened. I spent two days stewing in my own sweat and vomit

and blood, in the smell of a decaying body for two days. I think I would eat, I would bathe, and then I would just cry and sleep, and then in the morning I would probably wake up and go my friends don't know where the fuck I am. I am lost, I am alone, and I don't know what I'm gonna do. And then I would probably play with the device because I have no idea what I'm going to do at this point. Okay, you go to sleep. There's a sort of sound of harbor that wakes you up. It doesn't even feel like you

slept. It's one of those nights where it's just the sleep happens, and then you like wake up. It feels like you just woke up right away. Okay, there's a large sort of like foghorn kind of noise out from the harbor and lights pouring in. I sit up, I look around the room. I remind myself that I'm oh, yeah, that's right. I'm

trapped in a fucking video game. There's probably a small amount of hope that I'll wake up with a VR headset on in my chair, and every day that we wake up and that doesn't happen, I just probably get a little

more depressed about it. And then I would sit there thinking about how I was taken by this fang person and how we traveled across the sea for days, and my friends probably have no idea where I am, and I am alone, and I don't know how to get out of this game, and I don't know what to do accept slowly starve to death because I don't have a lot of money to get food every day, and I don't even know

how I would earn money to make food so or get buy food. Just like all this stuff, I would just be thinking about what I would have to do to just survive here, I guess, and yeah, then I would probably pull out the device and give it a shot and see if it's see if I can get it working, and if I can't get it working, then maybe I can sell it. I don't know. It looks pretty

complicated, so maybe it's worth something. I don't know. Okay, your recovery sort of resets back to normal and Cora Ali, you are trying to understand the piece of new Minerra that you have. Is this correct? Yeah? I mean what does it look like? Nol. I'm literally moving it around and hoping lightning strikes. Please try to understand a new Manerra using your intellect. The difficulty is six. I'll use some effort as well. You

have rolled a natural twenty. Not only do you understand that this is a communication device, but you understand how it works and you're positive you can reach out to the rest of the group. Yes, absolutely, I will do that if I understand this device instantly and how it works. Are there consequences for reaching out to my group? Is it going to put them in danger?

I think your understanding of the new min Era would tell you that the way that this works is that you picture the person that you want to speak to and a the nanomachines in the world will pick up on the signal that you send out from this sort of spherical device that has almost like one of those mountain climbing grips on the back, which you figure out you kind of have to like squeeze and pull to make the to make the device kind of

like start the connection, and you basically like just push the push the piece back in and it'll stop. And does it work infinitely? Like I can continuously use it? No? You can communicate with that device for up to five minutes maybe, yeah, but with one target. And then when that's done, can I do a different target or only the one target? You can switch targets for as long as the devices were, which is five minutes? Okay? No? Does does a major effect happen here as well?

If I turn this on? Can I save that? Or does it have to happen now? Can I bank that for when I use the device? I think? I think null possibly responds shortly after. This device is a cipher. You unfortunately will only get one use out of this device. However, as a major effect, the time that you would normally get out of this device being five minutes will be extended to ten minutes, and I have to use the ten minutes all at once. Correct, I turn it on.

We switched scenes. Take off your headset. Let's get the other players back. Hello. Okay, so you guys, you were all kind of getting ready for bed. You had set up a you had set up like a watch for the night. And who was on the watch again? I believe I believe that Ulrich was sort of ready to pass out right. It was taken last. I know, I think I was first, so then I was I guess I would take a second. Yeah, okay, okay,

you were your friends. Coda and her two children, uh Sam and Donnie were obviously very upset at what had happened the previous night, just like all of you, and they were I don't know if they were able to try and sleep. I know that they definitely tried to huddle up by the fire, and I don't know how how Coda is sort of reacting beyond the fact that she's trying to protect her children. I think she's generally probably pretty wound up, and I don't know if she'd actually be able to sleep,

even though they're probably very tired. So I'm sorry. First watch was techno. Yeah, okay, techno. Please make a perception check based on your intellect difficulty to Okay, you have rolled a nine. Your watch goes by without really any problems. The planes in general are just not really very active tonight. There's a little bit of wind, beyond beyond that, it's really

not a lot going on the Are you stoking the fires? Yeah? Okay, so yeah, I think uh, I think you can probably see that the Dannie and Sem have sort of passed out with Coda after a few hours. They just kind of collapsed in a heap by the fire. You're all kind of like leaning on each other. Just absolute exhaustion from them knock them

out. And uh, as far as the rest of the group goes, you all some of you have like sleeping bags or like a like tense I don't think really all of you do, but I know that you're all probably trying to sleep on the ground. It's a it's not the most comfortable sleep ever. You know, there is a lot of grass, but there's a lot of sort of rocky parts. It's hard to find like a nice wide area that's just soft and comfortable. Are you walking around are you like patrolling

technome? How are you doing this or you're sitting I would say, like, just like in the fire area, I'm not going to go into the darkness at all, okay, m m. Yeah, so it's uneventful, it doesn't nothing really seems to happen. Does that make you feel worse or better? Uh? I think I'm happy as long as nothing happens while it's on my watch, since I'm not necessarily a brawler by any means, so I wouldn't say I feel worse. I think by the end of my shift,

I kind of feel relief that nothing happens so far. Okay, I mean after what had happened taking this watch, how did that like make you feel? You volunteered for it, so I'm assuming you knew what you were doing, But was there like a lot of terror involved in that decision? I mean there'd be anxiety. I'd be anxious about it, like, you

know, this isn't something I necessarily like, I don't want. I think it'd be one of those like I would start to get tired towards the end, I'd be anxious and like even the slightest mo I'd be like, what was that like, oh, I'm ready. What was that like? Just like on guard, I'd say I'd be guarded. I wouldn't be like terrified or anything, not particularly in this instance, because I'd have people with me. So that always makes me feel a little more comfortable, even if it's

false security. So okay, well, the the time goes fairly slowly, but it is uneventful. A few hours pass, and uh, you're ready for the next shift. I go up and I I go up and I I I lean down and I like shake Jay's shoulder. I got wake up. It's your turn your watch. No you're not. I'm really good. Okay, sure, Yeah, anything happened, No, nothing, I kept the fires going. I didn't. I didn't see anything. There's some like maybe some animals and distance. That's it. So what kind of animals anything

to worry about. I don't know. I couldn't see them. I didn't go out there and check. If you want to go out there in check, you can which direction? Nope, I don't go out there. That was I want to go, but like which direction? And I just kind of point around like all of the directions. It's like there's animals everywhere. Man oh man, Yeah, go to bed. I'll go over. I'll start to stoke in the fires, but I'll check on everyone first. I just want to take a take a look, see, make sure everybody's doing

Okay, how the rest of you think you're sleeping? I am curled up into a ball in the fetal position, kind of hugging my own knees to my chest and trying to to lay my head at an angle like that, just trying to make myself as small as possible. Okay, what about you, Alric? I think Alric's probably laying down, face down and like a log like, probably snoring. Actually yeah, it can't be snoring, but yeah, he's probably starts coughing because there's dirt just inhaling into his into his

mouth, and I roll over and then I start snoring. He's out like a light. He spent the last night awake. It was probably hard to fall asleep, but once I was able to, I couldn't really turn my mind off willingly. I had to just give into exhaustion. You know you ever had that where it's like you are so tired, but you can't sleep because your mind's racing about something. It's kind of what how he is starting to how he would fall asleep, and then I guess just maybe a breath

or so, and then finally just gives in and passes right out. I feel like that's one of the things that would get me, you know, just sleeping somewhere else and then there's different noises at night that's like a that's a trigger probably for me. I live in the city too, so I'm just used to fire trucks and sirens, that's that's it. If there's silence and it's weird. I've lived kind of in a lot of different places personally, so I've wherever I

am all adapt to it. But it's just kind of like a you know, if you live in the suburbs around in the woods or something, and you're used to the sound of like some crickets and whatnot, and and then you just hear this like strange bird robot creatures the distance. Alien noises are probably the scariest. Frog cows too many. But otherwise several hours pass and there doesn't seem to be anything that happens. Everyone's sort of sleeping soundly.

Just start to fiddle around with the tablet, kind of flip it around, see if there's any buttons, Try and understand whatever this is. And I am making my anxiety so much worse by thinking about it over and over and picturing all of the ways that something bad could happen on my watch. I feel like I reacted as quickly as I could, and I should have taken the time to pay attention to where I heard her shouting instead of just being tired and going on instinct and running in the completely wrong direction. And I am absolutely terrified that something's going to happen to someone else, and that the exact same thing's going to happen, and I'm not going to react fast enough or I'm going to do something wrong and I won't

be able to help. Did you how far away are you moving from the fire? Just in general, not very far at all, Because I'm super afraid of being caught in the dark here. it would be ratcheted up like ten times. Is that why you ran? So yeah, there'd just be like little like m kind of noises that maybe freak you out a little bit. And there's the strange sort of animal sounds that happen at night as well. But as we get closer to the end of your watch, you can see that the that dawn is approaching it's starting to get a little bit lighter out. Do you feel safer in the daytime

here? I feel a lot safer in the daytime. The nighttime really freaks me out, especially so soon after what happened to Katie having happened when it was dark. Okay, as we're sort of like approaching dawn, the the campfires are starting to die out unless you're constantly like stoking them. There's probably just not enough fuel there in general, but they're starting to die out. If you, if anybody here has a fireplace, it takes a shit ton

of wood to like keep the thing going like all the time. Just you know, you need like one of those Dura flame logs or whatever to make could like last for a ridiculous amount of time, but it does. It takes a lot of fuel, So they'd they'd be dying out probably halfway through your your shift or so, and dawn is approaching. You make it through your shift and everything seems okay. You weren't really interrupted by anything at night, just kind of your own thoughts, which can be their own monster to

deal with. Dawn hits everybody probably right in the face. I don't know about the rest of you. But I can sleep as long as no light is smashing me in the face here in the middle of this field. Wam. It's uh, it just blinds you know. It hits you right and square in the face. As soon as dawn starts to pop up over the

horizon, I'd be up. Oh, I am like the worst kind of person to try and wake up. I am like like waking up a sleeping giant, Like I am just a giant grouch, and I'm one of those that I'll just take like a piece of my clothing and just pull it over my face and then I'm good to go. I'd be waking as well. I'd probably

do the same. I'd probably grown and be sluggish for a bit. But I think I think my brain would wake up a bit and I'd remember where and what is going on, because I feel like that's what would happen to me. I'd probably be like, yeah, oh, never mind, all right, I know what's going on, and I'd wake up and I'd be alert and ready try to make some breakfast or something, or or at least

And uh there's like a couple of foothills around here, and it's a very modest looking sort of place. But Coda, Sem and Donny would have sort of like signaled to you

and said, that is our home right up ahead. It's beautiful. Yeah, wow, it's it's probably a combination of stone and thatch. It's it's it's a it's a weird thing because the the house is partly like in the rock. It's it doesn't look like it's been carved it kind of looked like it like almost like it's been built into the rock and it juts out a bit. It's there's a bit of a foothill, so it's it's kind of like an incline. It's not really like a Hobbit home, but it's kind

of close. There's a rough shot chimney that's that's a sort of on an angle that's coming out of the of the ceiling and part of the thatch, and you can see there's like like a pen for some gallon and some money in and just kind of like a few like like a like a garden that's around the home, just kind of like fenced in with some some wooden planks

and whatnot. All around the end, there's a there's a just like a metal, uh sort of wire that's kind of keeping the fence together that's running along, and there's like a like a a wooden sort of door with a latch on it. How many gallon are there? Seven? Okay, I guess we would dismount whenever Coda kind of announces for us too, but I would call for everyone to kind of come to me whenever we do dismount. Whenever we do sure and if we If we do, then I would huddle

everyone in and go, we can. We can. We should ask for this gallon we can ride? Do you think we should? It's not red, but it has this sort of same suspension, I forget what it's called, but the same suspension aspect to it. Distant future, the Golden gate Bridge becomes this City of Bridges. just goes on and on. This is like the first time that you guys have gotten a good look like at the ocean since you've been here. I mean, it's it's kind of like a very sort of beautiful site. So if I can't remember Bossco, then I'd be weird to know. Is it just that we can't remember faces from outside the game, or is it that we can't remember faces from our past? Like can we remember what Pumpkinberry's character looks like? Like CORALI do we remember what she looks

like? So you can remember When you think of Myth or Pocket or PB or J you think of their characters first, their faces in your head, and when you think of them, you can remember things about them outside of their characters, better than people that you were very close with in real life. I think Myth, you probably noticed this when you were talking to Coda especially, Yeah, And then I think also just in that moment, I see the I guess the moment a day ago or no, a moment earlier

in the day. No, yeah, a day ago with Koda's kids just being kids and adults or being kids and being mischievous and thinking about my siblings and thinking about my brother, my twin, and not being able to remember his face. And that's crazy. And I think that's probably also why I stay super silent a lot of this when you think of him, And I mean, he looks like you, right, you see your character's face, I see my characters. I think, Yeah, that's odd, but I

guess it'll have to do. But yeah, it doesn't. It doesn't change my stoicism. I think I'm probably still going to be very quiet about a lot of this. Okay for the most part. There's some parts of this place that are very rusted, and there's some parts that are made out of metals that you've never seen before that apparently don't oxidize. And uh, it's it has a very similar sort of feeling to some of the ships that you saw when you were in Kefford. It has a lot of that sort

of same look to it. Almost it almost looks like a lot of like jewels varnish, you know. It has a sort of steampunk kind of look. It has a sort of feeling. It's like ten thousand leagues under the sea kind of look, you know, sort of bulbous shapes and like spherical glass and whatnot. So you're able to find the high port in you see the I guess there's a place to tie up your gallon outside and there's kind of like, uh, there's a there's a woman uh at a at a

I don't know if it's the interaction so much is the time limit that we spend here, Like if we spend more time to find or resurrect her, then we might just be better off getting immediately to the creator

seeing what she can do. Well. I mean, if what if we resurrect her and then she comes back into the game, like what if she got out? We don't know. We don't know what happens when when you die in the game, like what if she woke up? We kind of know what happens when you mess around with someone's body, right, I I don't. I was you know, I was temporarily uh disconnected, and I don't remember anything. But these guys actually got to talk to chat briefly,
