Episode description

We’re getting into the Halloween spirit with this truly gothic, spooky, and surprisingly non-monogamous relationship from the 1800s. You may know Mary Shelley as the writer and creator of Frankenstein, but her love life really was stranger than fiction!

Enter Percy Shelley, the devilishly handsome poet and advocate of ‘free-love.’ Percy’s already married when he meets young Mary, and they declare their love for each other in the most fitting of places: a graveyard.

Welcome back to Significant Lovers. We are your hosts, 2 cousins. My name is Mel. And I'm Kel. And next week we will be 3

cousins. Three cousins. Kind of it's so we will be joined by a third Co host who is Kelly's sister. So in a way it's like 2 Sisters and a cousin. My sister Caitlin is joining the podcast full time. If you didn't hear it last episode, this is our big announcement. She's being promoted because she's been doing our YouTube and listens immediately. Every time I send it to her, she listens right away. And she's so into the podcast.

She's even come up with like, poll ideas, you know, she's just randomly made a video for us once or twice. So she loves significant lovers. And we love her. Yep, Yep. Caitlin, we can't wait for you to join us and we are very excited about your episode next week. But. Today, Kel, who are we talking? About today We are continuing our countdown to Halloween. Caitlin's episode is going to be

Halloween esque as well. It's spooky season, and this episode in particular, I might add in some Thunder, some spooky church bells, some crows kind because this is a gothic couple. This is Mary and Percy Shelley. Mary Shelley is the novelist best known for writing Frankenstein. Heard of it I've. Heard. Of it, Percy Shelley was also a writer. He was a poet, philosopher, article writer, and believe it or not, Percy Shelley used to be more famous than Mary Shelley

back in the day. Is it 1 of? Those that much recognition. In her life? Like is it one of those jewels where she became more famous after she had died? I would say so, yeah. But I think even after she died, for a while, he was still more famous for his poetry and he was also friends with Lord Byron, so he was just like this notable figure. I didn't even realize that Frankenstein didn't make it on to college syllabuses and syllabi until the 1960s.

Like it wasn't really recognized as like a classic literature until pretty recently. I think I. Remember hearing that in high school when we read it. Yeah, that's crazy, I know. Did you ever read Frankenstein Mill? We did, Yeah, I think. I think in my English literature class we read it. Cool. Yeah. I also read it in college. I was trying to remember what the class was like, what the theme was, but I couldn't remember. But I actually cracked open the

book just yesterday. I should have done it a while ago, but I was revisiting it. I think I'm going to keep reading it. But yeah, I mean, Mary Shelley created one of the most influential gothic stories in history, I think you could say. I mean, she created a new horror creature. There's been so many Frankenstein movies. He's just like a type of mythical creature now in a way, like a reanimated body.

There's so many. Like there's Bride of Frankenstein I saw this year and I love Lisa Frankenstein. It's a great movie. I really recommend it. It's written by the same woman that wrote Juno and Jennifer's Body. It's so good. Oh, wait, yeah, you were telling me about that. Yeah, I love Lisa Frankenstein, so I'm excited to talk about

this. And yeah, there's actually recently there was a movie called Mary Shelley starring Elle Fanning about a lot of things we're going to talk about today, but I haven't seen the movie. I didn't want it to, you know, influence me too much because I'm sure it's not like totally historically accurate, but I do want to see it. I also didn't realize there's a movie called Haunted Summers starring Laura Dern about this relationship and things that happen in this story.

And there's also a movie starring Hugh Grant called Going with the Wind about this. I need to watch them. I feel like because of this podcast, I have so many movies. I'm like, I need to see that. I know. Yeah, but I'm the same deal. I'm, I'm working on research for a couple right now that has some form of media made about them. But I'm like, I don't like to watch that stuff when I'm researching and let it influence me.

Yeah, cause a lot of times it's not really accurate, but then you get kind of attached to the way it was portrayed. Yeah, but it also is sometimes nice to compare like, oh, in the depiction I I feel like in walk the Line I that was a helpful one with the Johnny and June. Right, right. And so we should watch them to tell people what is right and what's. Yeah. It's fun to see after though. Like, I remember I saw the Priscilla movie after I did all that research, and it was really

satisfying. I was like so pumped. Yeah, yeah, to see. You come to life. But yeah, this, this is a pretty dark story. There is gonna be a lot of death in it. Oh no. By the. Way, I mean, I feel like a lot of our episodes do have mentions of death, 'cause we're talking about people, but. Yeah, exactly. And everybody has a. Lot. Everybody dies. Yes. Unfortunately. It's true. Let's talk about it. Well, not right now, but we will, I guess.

Before I get into the episode, I do want to thank our new Patreon subscribers. Thank you to Gabby, Jennifer, Dara, Benita, Agne, Asha, Leanne, Emma, Becca, Gavin, Niadi, The Lovely Bones, and Lauren. Thank you so much. Happy to have you. OK, Mary and Percy Shelley, 3 words I would use to describe this couple are intellectual debaucherous. Oh. And cursed. Uh Oh yeah, because I was thinking even though she writes a Halloweeny story, is the actual relationship kind of

spooky as well? There are spooky things in this story besides the fact that she wrote Frankenstein, so you'll see. So Mary Shelley, who was she? Ray, I will have to stop the episode right there. Thank you so much for listening to the teaser. If you want to hear the full episode and many other bonus episodes, you can find them on Patreon. You can search significant lovers on the website or

download the Patreon app. It works a lot like like your podcast listening apps and we have tons of other couples on Patreon to listen to. So thank you so much for listening and supporting the show, and we'll get back together next week.
