Episode description

“One and one-half wandering Jews returned to their natural coasts,” Paul Simon wrote in 1983. “To resume old acquaintances and step out occasionally…and speculate who had been damaged the most.”

Here Paul Simon was undeniably singing about Carrie Fisher in his song, “Hearts and Bones.” The ex-Simon and Garfunkler had been on-and-off with Carrie Fisher, best known for her role as Princess Leia in Star Wars (but we love her most for When Harry Met Sally). In fact, Carrie and Paul broke up and got back together repeatedly for twelve years

How many times is too many times to break up and get back together? That’s one question we ponder in the love story of Carrie Fisher and Paul Simon.

Oh. About this losing love is like a window in your heart.

Everyone sees you're blown apart, everyone sees the wind blow oh, can't you relate to that? But yes, today we are talking about Paul Simon the singer, the 1/2 of Simon and Garfunkel and solo artist in his own right and Carrie Fisher. Yes, we are still on the the family tree of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor and that whole thing. But Carrie Fisher and Paul Simon have their own love story, you know, that deserves its episode even if they weren't related to them.

And Carrie Fisher of course is an actress. She was Princess Leia and Star Wars and is also a writer and and many other things. Paul Simon and Carrie Fisher. This is this is random, but I started feeling like this couple, it was reminding me of Jack Antonoff and Lena Dunham. Oh, I feel like that's their modern day counterpart because OK, first of all, Paul Simon and Jack Antonoff, both musicians, both Jewish, both from New Jersey originally, I think they

both look kind of similar. And the women, Carrie Fisher and Lena Dunham are both very funny and they both have dealt with mental illness. Oh, you're right. And rehab and things like that. And also both writers, both very talented writers and comedic writers. And then there's also a Lorde connection because if you guys remember, Lorde showed up in the You know, I'm Jack Antonoff episode. Rumors of how she connects.

She connects because in her song Loveless, there's a short clip of someone saying, what is this tape? This is my favorite tape, and it's Paul Simon. Oh yeah. What is this tape? This is my favorite tape, so it's kind of a stretch. Oh, I was getting that that confused with the Billie Eilish one where it's like Steve. Carell, no, But yeah, So, So keep that in mind if you want. But if I had to describe this couple in three words, as we do, I would say indecisive.

Oh, oh, yeah. Laughter and troubled. Oh. OK, you gave us this. You gave us a little sandwich. There Yep, this is an on and off again relationship, so I'm going to want to pull up that poll again where we asked people about. Yeah, let's see how that. How many times it's OK to break up? We'll look at it later when maybe when they start to break up spoiler, but that does happen. Wait, he really did look like Jack Antonoff. He's young. I'm looking at it now. Yeah.

He's a really cute. I think he's a little bit better looking than Jack Antonoff. He is cute. Wait, I think. I could have fallen for him. Oh, me too. Wait, I think Garfunkel's pretty cute too. Yeah, he's got that like, wild hair. Yeah, but he's a really cute face. I mean, OK, I I want to hear about this. OK, so who is Paul Simon? He's 1/2 of Simon Garfunkel, the folk rock duo from the 60s if you forgot who that was or something.

He he's short as well. He is even shorter than Carrie Fisher's father, who we have talked about recently, Eddie Fisher. Paul Simon is only 5 foot three. What? I never realized that. Me neither. Wow. Well, he stands tall because. He's he's little he is AI think very cute New York accent. He was born in Newark, NJ but his family moved to Queens. So that's where he grew up when he was little. And he was born October 13th 1941. So he's 82 today I think.

And his parents were Hungarian, Jewish. His father, Louis, or Louis, you never know how people pronounce that name, was a professor of education at City College of New York. But he also was a double bass player and dance band leader who performed. So that's probably where Paul got his musical influence. And his mother, Belle, was an elementary school teacher. His young and Queen's baseball and music were very important to him. And he met Art Garfunkel when he

was 10 years old. And Paul said his relationship recently, he said that his relationship with Art is the longest relationship that I had in my life. And they began singing together at age 13. And their first song together as teenagers was called Hey Schoolgirl, which came out in 1957. And it was apparently a neighborhood hit. So Paul had learned guitar and started writing songs. And they were, you know, teenagers already recording music together, which is pretty cool.

But then Paul went to Queen's College, where he majored in English, and Garfunkel went to Columbia to study mathematics. So I think during college, they kind of stopped recording music together. They did graduate from college. Paul graduated in 1963. I feel like often on this show, people don't graduate. So, yeah, impressive. But during college, Paul had continued writing songs all

throughout. And then he did one semester at Brooklyn Law School, but he didn't continue, thank God, because probably wouldn't have his beautiful music if he did. So him and Art Garfunkel got back to recording music together, and their debut album came out in 1964. Called Wednesday Morning, 3:00 AM. And it wasn't a hit. Initially, it really went unnoticed. But then about a year later, somebody remixed the song Sound of Silence, added like, drums to

it and a bass, whatever. And then that became a hit, and then people revisited the album and from there on they became famous. All right, I will have to stop the episode right there.
