This is such a fun episode because we are going to the moon.
We. Literally out of this world, we are going to walk on the moon's surface and wow, get to know the famous man who the first person to ever do that, Neil Armstrong. He's honestly, I didn't know anything about him. It's so funny. I told my friend Tess, hi, Tess, that we're doing this episode and she's like the biker, like Lance Armstrong. That's Lance. But yeah, I didn't know anything about Neil Armstrong as a
person. There was a movie that came out four years ago, five years ago called First Man with Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy. And I watched it actually to prepare for this, because this is a very private couple, so I'm going to be piercing together things that I can. But it was. I love those episodes.
Yeah, it was. It was fun to cover because I also think there's something so romantic about space and you know, there's so many phrases like I love you to the moon and back or written in the stars and just the vastness of it. The idea of your spouse being. So far away. The furthest away you possibly can be as a human. Oh my gosh, yes. Like, you know, there's this song, Rocket Man, you know, that that whole idea of being so far away. Yeah, it's a it's a romantic idea. Oh my gosh.
I'm excited because I feel like he's one of the most famous Americans, probably. But I don't really know anything about him, so I'm intrigued. Yeah, he was a man of mystery. Yeah. And no, it really is crazy. Like the fact that your spouse can be not on this earth yet still alive in a way. Like that's that. Is crazy crazy and I. Can't even wrap my head around that. And I was looking at quotes
about space to get me inspired. There's one by this astronomer named Carl Sagan, which I really liked, that's exploring the cosmos is an exploration of ourselves, a journey to unravel the cosmic mysteries that have shaped our very being, which I really like because it reminded me of this podcast in a way, is like, we're exploring people's relationships because we're
trying to understand ourselves. And I just think there's like, there's such beauty and space exploration because at the end of the day, it really is just trying to understand what does it all mean? Like, why are we here? Is there anybody else out there? And, you know, that relates to love in so many ways, I think so. It's pretty cool. That's so deep, Mel, and so true because that is. Kind of falling in love too, is that question of like, is anybody else out here?
I mean, yes, there's millions of people in the world, but billions of people in the world. But it sometimes feels like you're all alone. So to be able to connect with somebody that's so true. Yeah, Like, it's literally like, in a way. Like the search for aliens. It's similar to the search for your soul mate, because it's like doesn't exist, you know? Yeah. Does it exist? Yes. But how did you decide to do this besides all the, you know,
comparisons to space? You know, I was listening to the song Rocket Man actually, and I was like, I just, I love that song. It's one of my favorite songs. And then it got me thinking of doing a space themed episode. So yeah, Neil was just the first one I thought of since he was the first man that walked on the moon. But I guess I could have done Buzz Aldrin or another astronaut, too. So maybe someday. Maybe. Someday. Yeah. That's a cool wow.
And this is our second Neil. We did another Neil recently, so yeah, I just realized that too. Neil I also just love doing that time period to the 1960s like Janet. So Neil, this is about Neil's first marriage to his wife, Janet. And like, she had this short Pixie cut. She smoked cigarettes like she wore 1960s clothes. Obviously, 'cause that was the time period. But I just. I like going back in time and putting ourselves contextually
in history. Yeah, I looked up pictures of them and I did watch the trailer, but that's all I know, so. I'm ready. It was a pretty good film. It's no Apollo 13, but I I really liked it. But yeah, so. Well, Mel, what 3 words would you describe this couple? Oh my gosh. I would say I I'm doing this on the spot as always. I'd say distanced, complicated and committed in a way. Got it. Oh. Nice, I would say. All right, So Neil, who are? They who are they?
So Neil. He was born August 5th, 1930 and Wapakono Wapakonoda, Ohio. His mom, Viola, was a stay at home mom and his dad, Steven, was an auditor for the Ohio State government and for some reason that caused them to move around a lot, as they do. Oh my God, move around the state. So just different towns. He lived in 16 different towns. All right, I will have to stop the episode right there. Thank you so much for listening
