Episode description

This is a teaser for a bonus episode. You can listen to it in full on Patreon

Did you know that the host of Survivor, Jeff Probst, dated a contestant back in 2004? During season 9 on the islands of Vanuatu, Jeff fell for the Survivor player Julie Berry, a 24-year old from Maine. Jeff emailed Julie after the season ended, and the two enjoyed a “love affair” that lasted four years.

We’re joined by Kel’s sister Shannon, a Survivor expert, to look back at the early seasons of the show, recall Jeff’s iconic catchphrases, and tell the unusual story of Jeff & Julie.

You know what do you know the show Survivor? Do not yet? Have you heard of Survivor?

I think you have. Probably you probably know Jeff or you can imagine who he is. Yeah. So today it's an episode of when Jeff Probst met Julie Berry but you can instant contestant Survivor. So you can simplify it to when the Survivor hosts, Matt a Survivor contestant and then they fell in love. Yep. And We're calling all umi's, I'm Kel. And I'm Mel and today, we are joined by my sister. Mel's cousin Shannon. Hello, s, Shannon in a row on the podcast.

Oh, wow, Shannon. Is a Survivor expert. Seriously Shannon has seen every single season and she knows all the players. She knows everything. So we had to have her. I feel like we couldn't do this show without About you. So thanks for being on the Pod shape. Thank you so much for having me. Yes, this feels so special. You guys are even doing this. Really? How you asked me to be here?

I would kind of feel some sort of way if you didn't have me on this, I'm just so happy that you both love Survivor. Probably not as much as I do. But you still, we're getting, love it, and watch it and we all appreciate it so. Well, yeah, we is for everyone out there. Ever seen it. We grew up watching Survivor. Yes, we watched even like season one with our parents.

Mm-hmm. And I actually got involved in the Scandal at my elementary school because I came up with the idea for a bunch of us kids to play Survivor and we would actually vote each other out and we would do challenges we were to like jump off the top of the jungle gym and people got really carried away with it. Like they started eating puddle water eating bark mulch and I was a Actually homesick when it got really crazy, like, at the game kind of took over without

me. I was kind of the Jeff Probst. I guess you could say, well, they come home. They call their parents to say, like, did you know this was going on? And then again, for a little, just the cultural impact the show has. Yeah, don't you feel like when we were younger and watch Survivor, it felt, it still does feel, but it felt so intense like Tribal Council. I just remember thinking it was like, the most intense And also very like adults.

Yeah, it was crazy. I mean, it really was sort of the only show of its kind back then it's really paved the way for competition reality TV shows, since then true, true. So, it really, it did matter more. It was more dramatic because it was so fresh. So new. But it was also like early 2000s drama. I was shopping film.

And that makes everything more dramatic style of film Yeah, I can't stand how oversaturated television has gotten where, yeah, nowadays, you don't have those experiences where everyone is watching, like, the Sand Shell week to week and like it's such a big deal and everyone's deeply invested in. Then, you know, the reunions, they show the hometown and like whole town has like rallied behind some contestant.

Yeah. Because, like, like the art of doing that with your families, with everyone's kind of lost, like everyone used to watch American Idol. So many other shows, but that's why I still love Survivor. I'll never stop watching it cuz me and all my friends. We still do that, we watch it every single week and text each other and we have reactions. And will you know talk about it? Ask who do you thinks gonna get voted out?

It's really is like an activity outside of watching the show because you're like constantly, like thinking about it, disgusting it. It's just so much fun. It is is and I love the old, like I've been what were you watching the old seasons? And that's what this is about today. Talking about an old season Survivor when Jeff Probst fell in love with a contestant. Yeah. So Shannon's going to help us out with some knowledge. Wait Survivor wasn't Survivor first created by a different country.

So it's based off of like another one show I shout out Netherlands. Yeah, I don't remember what it was called it. Doesn't like the same exact format but the guy who created it like Mark Burnett. He think British guy and he's like created so many different shows. Cool. So knowledgeable. Okay. Should we get into it? Yeah. All right yeah I just want to say this was an idea of ours we've been talking about because isn't it so interesting. Like the host of Survivor dated a contestant.

It is, I feel like I so kind of unheard of. Yeah. And I want to do it but I didn't think this was right. At time, I thought maybe when we're at like episode, 70 or something, but Mel was really encouraging it. So thank you. I mean, this goes back to coincidences because Kelly just so happened to be watching this season and our whole thing with this show, is the couples that we pick.

They kind of pick us, right? And I think that's a sign from the universe that there's a reason why you gravitate towards certain episodes. Like, sometimes, I don't think I've always picked, like, the best one that I probably should have. But I think that, you know, when There's something like that. Like coincidental. Yeah, gotta go with it. And also we're coming up towards the end of a current Survivor true season.

I don't know if anyone's watching season 44 right now, so it's kind of timely in a way to was a crush on Danny if you're listening. No way. He's married such a good season. All right, I will have to stop the episode right there. Thank you so much for listening to the teaser. If you want to hear the full episode and many other bonus episodes you can find them on patreon, you can search significant lovers on the website or download the patreon app.

It works a lot, like, regular podcast listening apps. We have tons of other couples on patreon to listen to. So thank you so much for listening and supporting the show. Oh, and we'll get back together next week. Oh, and we'll get back together next week.
