And at this point, she's pretty much established as a rising star herself, so I feel like her and Ryan are kind of like at the same place.

Are these OK? Careers at this point, these are are the adjectives that have been described, but also how I perceive the person. So for Reese, I said. Ambitious, polite, vibrant, considerate, strong willed, the generous, well organized, a natural born leader. All American like, good girl like. I love it, Ryan. Ryan, like I tell me I don't, I don't know him, but I did get the sense that he is like kind of a macho guy, but like a little lost about who he is

maybe. Okay, the worst to be described as. There will be a lot, but right now it's 1997. They are young. It is Reese's 21st birthday, and Ryan tags along with a mutual friend to attend the party, he told the e-news in 1999. I went with a friend because I knew there would be food and drinks, and I was just sitting back in the corner pounding away the drinks when somebody walked over and introduced Reese to me. Then in 1998, Reese later said about their this meeting.

I don't know what came over me. Maybe the seven Midori sours. I say Midori. I don't know. I don't know either, she said. But I like it. Yeah, she said. But I think I told him, I think you're my birthday present. The day they met. The day they met. Yeah, it. Does been drunk? Yes, it must have been drunk 7. Midori. I love you. Yeah, A. Year my birthday present. So very soon after meeting, Ryan went off to film the slasher movie I Know What You Did Last Summer in North Carolina.

Fun fact, Reese actually had auditioned for this film but lost the role to Jennifer Love Hewitt. Wow. So Ryan is off filming the movie and the two of them are keeping in touch long distance during this time. Her second long distance relationship. Yes, I mean, that's not every relationship with an actor is you. Know, but hopefully there's more communication and it seems like there probably is because things move pretty quickly.

There's not a lot of information available from this time period. But years later, Reese was on Andy Cohen's show and he said like, oh, did you guys fall in love filming Cruel Intentions? And she said no, we were already living together for a year and a half before filming that movie, so they were like, serious pretty quickly. Wow. That surprises me. I thought they were on that movie so. That is. A. Surprise, but no, they were already dating when they were cast in the movie.

I'm sure you're going to get into this, but was it happenstance they both were cast in that movie or was it purposeful? Yeah, so I'll get into that now. So Columbia Pictures, they were casting for the film. And it to anyone who doesn't know, the film is about basically these two rich, manipulative teenagers in Manhattan named Sebastian and Catherine. Is it? Yeah, it's a Dangerous Liaisons

modern adaptation. Yes. And so they make a bet that the boy Sebastian, who's like this bad boy, has to seduce this good girl, virgin girl named Annette. And so Ryan, he's a rising star at this point. He got a lot of good press for that. I Know what You did Last summer movie. And he's cast in the lead role as Sebastian and Sarah Michelle Gellar is cast alongside him as his step sister in the film. And then they have to find the Annette character.

And Columbia originally wanted Katie Holmes from Dawson's Creek to play Annette, but the director wasn't crazy about that idea idea. He wanted someone with a little more character. He said no shade to Katie. And he he honestly really wanted Reese. I'm sure he like also met Reese through Ryan. He's like, I think she'd be great for the part, but she didn't want to be in the movie. She didn't really like the

character. So then Roger and Ryan took Reese out to dinner and they quote, wooed her and convinced her to take the part if they were able to rewrite the character a little bit to be less passive and like a stronger character. And so then she accepted the part. Of the I wonder what the original script looked like. I wonder if it was more like if it was more like Dangerous Liaisons, because in that the Annette character is very she very easily gets seduced.

It seems like in a way like and he's crying and like, I don't know. She literally dies. Because she. Breaks up with her and then she actually does alert. Spoiler She dies of a broken. He dies and then she dies. Yeah, of a broken, but she's like dying on her death bed because he broke up with her. Oh sorry I guess sorry I was thinking of the Uma Thurman character I messed. UP. No, we're talking about the Michelle Pfeiffer. But she. Also was on the on the deathbed.

Well, Michelle Pfeiffer's character didn't get seduced that easily, so never mind. A little. She was like in love with him from the first attempt, like she was fighting it, but she was in love with him. Yeah, even though. He was attendant, but. He was arguably way more sinister than Ryan Phillippe is. Oh my gosh, he's like literally rapist. And horrible Ryan Phillippe's character is, at least there's

something to love about him. There's something to like, and you could see why she might love him. But. I find it cool to watch that movie like in modern times because it seems like such a inspiration for Gossip Girl and it's kind of fun. Intentions, yeah. It's kind of fun. If you want some of that vibe, you can watch Cruel Intentions. Anyway, anyway, so they filmed this movie together. They were already a couple, they were already living to together.

And then in December 1998, they got engaged at a weekend away in Charleston, SC at the luxury hotel Planters Inn. At this point, Reese is 22 and Ryan is 24. At some point in December of this same month, presumably we can do the math. They also got pregnant with their first child, but I don't think I'm guessing they didn't get engaged because she was pregnant, because if you do the math from when the daughter was born, it would have been around December. So it seems like they got

engaged anyway. They're quite young, though. So then it's March 99, Cruel Intentions premieres. And soon after, Reese's pregnancy was announced to the world. And she's not really showing much on the red carpet. But like, the top that she wears has like a kind of like a ribbon over her stomach. So I think it it's like meant to show more attention to her belly. I feel like she could have kept it hidden if she wanted to. All right, I will have to stop

the episode right there. Thank you so much for listening to the teaser. If you want to hear the full episode and many other bonus episodes, you can find them on Patreon.
