Episode description

Ciao! Buongiorno! It’s fashion week for Significant Lovers!

Did you know Dolce & Gabbana isn’t just a fashion brand? Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were real-life lovers before becoming world-renowned fashion designers. Today, we may think of D&G as a status symbol of wealth, but the real Dolce and Gabbana were scrappy, struggling, aspiring designers when they first met in 1980.

Join us as we piece together the love story between Dolce and Gabbana. D&G are known for saying controversial things, so please don’t shoot the messengers! Just grab an Aperol Spritz or Negroni, settle back, and imagine it’s the early 1980s in Northern Italy…

This is a bonus episode and I guess I should also say Ciao and Bongiorno because today is a

very Italian episode. We. Are talking about the couple which is the duo behind Dolce and Gabbana. Did you know that they are real people that dated? No. We didn't until. You bought me? Yeah, until we played that game. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I got Mel. I actually got one for myself. I don't know if you know this. Yeah. I got one for myself too. I but I got my oldest celebrity couples matching card game that is so significant lovers.

It has a bunch of the couples that we've covered, like it has Elvis and Priscilla and Kate and William and John and Yoko, probably more lots of people. And I actually emailed them asking if they would want to sponsor us, but they never answered. So I'm not going to say what the game is called. Because. Pay for that. But one of the couples in this matching game was Dolce and Gabbana and all of us, and we were playing it were like, what? I didn't know that they were a

couple, huh? So that really planted the seed, planted the seed in my mind to cover them someday, and now we're here. I'm so intrigued. Again, Lovers is going international. OK, we've covered other countries before. I know. But it is going to be very Italian. I know nothing, absolutely nothing about them. I thought they were like, new. They're real people, but I thought they were friends or I don't know, just like. Lovers. That's crazy. Just really great friends.

So if you remember some, I didn't know that they were real people. I don't, I mean. Actually, all those fashion brands usually. Yeah. Name. Yeah, I. Knew like obviously like Tom Ford and Ralph Lauren and Versace, but for some reason I didn't think Donatello, wait, what am I talking about? No, I didn't know. I honestly I. Don't own any Dolce and Gabon oh me. Neither, I've never even stepped into one of their stores if they have sleepers. You don't belong there.

You know, I actually went on their website to peruse their current collection and there were some things that I thought were really cute and I was thinking, oh, I want this, but there are thousands of dollars. Dolce and Gabbana are high fashion, but they're not like the highest. I think that their pieces will typically be like, I don't know, 3004 thousand dollars or something, which is a lot, I mean, way outside my price range.

But I think some of those brands can get up to more like 10,000, you know, so. What do you think is like the highest high fashion? I don't know. I know I don't know either, like sometimes I watch the occasional fashion YouTuber like Hot Couture or something, but I'm really out of my death depth when it comes to that. So well, it's Fashion Week for a significant lovers. All right, well, let's let's discuss the story of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. Yes, let's.

I just wanted to to set the mood, I wanted to read a little quote from the Italian fashion magazine Mommy. I think that's how you call it, how you pronounce it. And I actually got a lot of information from this magazine. But they wrote there is no Dulce without Gabbana and vice versa. A destiny written from the first pages in his youth when Stefano Gavana and Domenico Dolce meet, fall in love and create together one of the greatest made in Italy empires.

Sometimes the translation in this episode is a little iffy, just saying. I noticed in that paragraph it said like in his youth but it was about both of them. Sorry I'm just being nitpicky but I think they meant there you've but that's OK. Yeah. Yeah. So if I had to describe this couple in three words, the first word, OK, I know this seems really obvious, but the first word would be Italian. I just had to say it because they are so proudly Italian.

Almost every time they're describing a collection or a piece that they've designed, they always bring up Italy. Every single time. Like I saw this interview where Stefano Gabbana was describing a dress and he was like, it's sexy, but not overly so. It's sensual, it's Italian. The next thing he goes on to describe, he's like, it's this, it's that, it's Italian. They're just constant. I think every single video I saw with them they mentioned Italy, so. That's sweet.

They're just obsessed with their their motherland. Yeah, their heritage and their culture. Yes, yes, and I even saw, you know, the phone knows what you're doing creepy. I saw on Instagram.

I was recommended this video of a couple that was doing this thing where they were like walk in the door and they were dressed in different designers clothes, like basically showing the essence of different designers like Chloe or Ralph Lauren. And and then when they got to Dolce and Gabbana, they showed one of them like shaving Parmesan onto a bowl of spaghetti. And like they're acting so Italian.

Like, they're just, even though there were other Italian designers in that video, like Versace and Armani and whatever, for some reason, theirs was the one that was like with the spaghetti, you know, they're just obsessed with being Italian. Yeah. But my second word would be argumentative. Oh. OK. But my third word would be eternal. OK, Italian. Argumentative.

Eternal. This is one of those couples where not a lot is known during the 80s and 90s, yeah, but later on we get a lot more information. So just kind of like, bear with me. That's. The Dark Ages. Yeah, yeah, I feel like it might sound like the episode is over really soon, but just just stay with me because there's going to be more to learn about them. All right? I will have to stop. The episode right there. Thank you. So much.
