Welcome one and all to episode 398 of Signals for Mars. I'm your host Victor and this is the first solo show in a very very long time. Yeah I like to be surrounded by my friends talking about all types of music and different things but this was an episode in the making for some for quite a while. I'm stumbling over words here. It is my vinyl hall. Here we go. I used to do a thing on Patreon where it would be a vinyl album of the week and
it's kind of like this episode but what I would do is just showcase one album. I would read down all the details where it was recorded, who produced it, singles off of the album, what it was known for and I'd show off the vinyl. I know that there's a lot of people out there that prefer the standard black vinyl because supposedly it sounds better, so on and so forth. Listen I love music, I love vinyl, I'm not an over-the-top audio file that's gonna sit there and say yeah this
one that's black. Here you can hear these frequencies that you can't on the colored or pictured disc. Not me guys, sorry. I'm sure that exists, I'm not gonna doubt people but my hearing is so messed up that it's funny being somebody
that's been using hearing aids now for six months. Hearing stuff in songs I'm not talking about remastered and remixed things, I'm talking about mixes that I've heard all my life and hearing things for the first time or the first time in a long time thinking wow why'd they mix that out of this song and it turns out no your ears are so messed up that you weren't hearing that. I also don't have the setup. My hi-fi lovey is not as luxurious as what other people
may have. Yeah my setup isn't all that great. I'm hoping to remedy that soon but fact of the matter is I don't have a great turntable, I don't have a great amplifier, I get by with what I have and I'm not at the point where it's gonna make that much of a difference for me between the standard vinyl and the color door picture disc. So yeah so essentially what I did here, originally I was just gonna do the vinyl albums that I picked up in the States. I was
like well can I get an hour out of that? And then I thought okay well I bought a bunch of stuff before I went to the States okay but as I'm opening that stuff up for the episode I'm like wait a second but I have this other stuff as well that I bought a few months back maybe I should show that off as well. So there are things that I picked up in 2003, things that I picked up this year
as well. I just wanted to share it with you. I know that there are a lot of vinyl lovers out there, collectionists, people that like picking up all this stuff and I hope you guys enjoy. This is again the first solo episode that I've done a long time. It was pre-recorded so I didn't do it on the fly live like I used to do a lot of these episodes for various reasons but nonetheless again I hope you enjoy. Shout out to all my patrons thank you so much for your continued support.
You can join patreon for as little as two bucks a month. You can also pick up merch or there's various other ways that you can help support the podcast and live show. Alright guys thank you so much again for your support. We're gonna hop on in to this episode. Enjoy! Welcome one and all to the first live Signals from Mars episode in a very long time. I'm your host Victor and most of these episodes I've been pre-recording since May up until now. I don't know that I have done any live shows since then. There is another live show scheduled for next week with some of my patrons. We're gonna be doing a countdown of what you guys have voted as your favorite albums
of 1988. Got the old man hair going here that's slightly better. Alright anyway yeah so tonight's episode the vinyl hall will be me discussing some vinyl that
I've picked up throughout the year 2024. We're close to the end of October almost to the end of the year and there are some things that I'm gonna show you guys that that I picked up throughout this year some from last year perhaps and yeah there will be there will be a little of everything going on here so hope you guys enjoy it there's gonna be different styles of music in here stuff that's new stuff that's old some stuff that surprised me some stuff that I haven't
opened up until today actually and there will be a box set that that I've had for a few months now but I opened it up today so it's a complete surprise to me as to what what will be in the actual box set so anyway let's get things started with I picked this up a little earlier this year I've found a few different places that I really enjoy going to and this is a shop that I've been ordering plenty of stuff from it's called long play it's in a town called
barra caldo which is a suburb of Bilbao Spain in the north and this one of the first things that I picked up there I picked up two vinyls I'm trying to remember what the other vinyl was it may be within this here but I'm not sure and since then I've been getting a lot of mail order stuff from them anyway this isn't exactly metal but I do love this album it is smash by the offspring this was a reissue from believe a year ago or so they had it when we showed up so I picked it up there's one of the
things that I hate about the live stream are the lights do kind of kill stuff with the reflection but I'll do the best that I can it's just 180 gram black vinyl I won't show all of the albums but some I will hear and yeah this is what got a lot of people into the band stuff like bad habit got to get away and and obviously come out and play keep them separated so all right here is one from last year it is code orange it is the above yeah that's what I thought couldn't make it out but all
right above a band that I really enjoy band whose guitarist is currently playing in Marilyn Manson double gatefold interesting Mark Striegel talked about how some of the albums that he's had forever the reissues of dollar colors all right wow this is a pretty cool booklet kind of whenever I see this this is like a a CD booklet that's been that's had some growth sprinkles put on it I don't know I don't know how else you would say it Max Portnoy plays on
this Mike Portnoy's son there is a poster that came with this as well see we can check out the poster right here's the poster is the poster all right bumping the mic that's never good is there anything else special about this final let's see all right so does their classic logo here this is like a cream color you make it out that's a grasshopper I really enjoy this album believe it came out last year did this come out this year I did zero research
on this guy's yeah 2023 says right there all right so we're gonna string a few together here because they are from similar bands so this is Allison Chains jar of flies four times platinum the EP have this on cassette and I believe I still have it on CD when I saw this was being reissued I had to have it I mean I love this album I can't tell you when this came out how much I listened to this just straight up black vinyl it is remastered by Toby right I believe
could be wrong with that why did I think another Toby right has worked produced by Allison Chains engineered and mixed by Toby Ted Trevor tab Taylor Tony Todd Trent Timothy Tyler Thomas Tilly Terry Tito right so that's what I saw there worldwide management's Susan Silver that is Chris Cornell's ex-wife so there you go jar of flies now another album that I've always wanted to have on vinyl I'm glad they just reissued it it's black gives way to blue I love everything that
Allison Chains has put out I don't think that they've released a bad album in my opinion this was their return after so many years of being away it just goes to show you what a brand is all about because this is 180 gram it is just black vinyl there's really nothing spectacular about it Jerry Cantrell put out some fabulous solo albums he just released a new one today which I need to check out of course I will be checking that out for our October albums
so black gives way to blue Allison Chains while we're at it I picked this up as well while I was in the States it is an exclusive by the company lids has this cardboard that came on the inside and oh yeah you lift the brim up and it's got that the original cover so kiss fan blowing it today how about that all right speaking of caps let me let me show you this how about that we've got two new caps that you can purchase to support the show we have got
that looks odd doesn't it all right yeah so we've got the new distress distressed cap got a fly in here we've got a new trucker hat all right use the promo code I owe me for 10% off we've got some other fairly new items that we're selling the stress classic pullover hoodie distress woman's premium v-neck which my wife has she's actually got the hoodie as well we've got the Brad doll bucket hat we've got the beanie a bomber jacket which I may actually be picking up
a windbreaker those are always great a hoodie which I do own and the classic tee now this is just one of the many ways that you can help support the show and promote it at the same time is by picking up any of this merch just scan the QR code and you can go over to our store if not you can just go to signals from Mars calm and you'll find merch right there at the top of the page you just click on and you can see all of the other merch that we are selling so there you go all right so let's
keep things going and and also remind you that the 1988 special is next week let your voice be heard folks vote make sure to send your votes in by your 10 your 10 favorite albums of 1988 please keep it to hard rock and metal at least try to do so no live albums no greatest hits and if you're not sure about the process you send me 10 albums and well if you send me five I'll work with that if you send me one I'll work with that but if you send me 10 the number one
album gets 10 points number two album gets nine points all the way down to number 10 which will get one point I'll tally all the points up and then we will determine who the winner is for the 1988 countdown let your voice be heard make sure that your favorites make it and join us in the chat if you're not a patron and at that point you can follow along let us know if we're right if we're wrong if you like what people voted for if you don't like what people voted for
it's all it's all up to you guys basically all right let's keep things going here there's gonna be a common thread with the next few vinyls so category seven just released this album over the summer still got the stickers on it but let's see so we've got Jack Gibson of Exodus we've got Michael Orlando who mostly probably know from adrenaline mob John Bush from two bands we're gonna be talking about in a second Jason Bittner of you just left overkill
shadows fall is probably what he's best known for and then over here we've got
mr. Phil Demel best known for violence and machine head so this is the storm surge variant of this vinyl it comes with the trusty insert here as all the lyrics on the back there all right let's check out this storm surge all right so here we go this is storm surge or category seven cool album check it out has some songs that I've been playing on my constant rotation have made my 2024 playlist something that will be voting on also
towards the end of the year in December we'll have a special on that again if you want to appear on those actual shows you need to be a patron so you can do that for as little as two bucks a month just mentioned John Bush how about some armored saint this is La Raza when this came out this is the first album that I interviewed John and Joey for limited edition reissue remastered for vinyl it is a white black marbled is what it says here covers
completely white so it's hard to see gotta get there we go all right this is a single vinyl and let's see if we can squeeze all this stuff in in an hour if not we could always hold over and do some more another day but similar to the category seven I guess it is what metal blade is doing nowadays lyric sheet here I put everything on an angle interesting does oh yeah the band does appear I have this on CD as well I think at this point when hands down is the only album that I don't have on
final this is the white black marble very cool really good album was a return for them and they've more or less been back since they're working on new material now let's see the album before this was also reissued it is revelation man this has some of the greatest guitar crunch out of any album that's ever been recorded in my opinion they were using crank amps which dime bag made famous trying to get you with no glare there let's see all right so this is a double vinyl
this what does this have it has a download I didn't notice if the other one had a download have it on CD yeah and have it ripped from the CD so I mean I could still do the download but anyway so this is what I got here for this I don't recall the actual name of what this variant is I could probably look it up on disk odds though let's see it's like a burgundy color if you can tell let's see I've got this cogs open but this is me okay where's my collection here we go okay so armored saint
revelation okay so it's just as red okay and as I said we will keep the John Bush festival going here it is stomp 442 by anthrax and this is a limited edition clear with blue and green splatter this is a nuclear blast reissue so this is really cool love these splatter albums can't always get them because they're so unique as they sell out this is limited to 1400 copies I have this on CD the date came out for as much crap as this album has received over the years I've always enjoyed it
but similar to metal blade here you've got this got the lyrics on the back this album has a lot of good stuff on it whether it's up your alley or not I enjoy now there was a band once upon a time that wanted John Bush to sing for them yeah I've got the poster back here but came back from the US with a bunch of different vinyls from this band and everything that I've shown up to now is purchased in Europe so there's gonna be a few that I've picked up in the States
I've got a bunch of these from Walmart and I don't know if the Walmart vinyls are better worse so on and so forth but I will say this the price point is where it's at because these albums are 10 to 20 euros more expensive in Europe so this is Kill em all okay I picked this up for $22 this is close to 40 euros here so close to $45 this is on limited edition red vinyl which they're releasing in Europe and apparently in the States it is only available in Walmart at the moment
there's a few other things that I've ordered from Walmart that here in Europe for example the somewhere in time reissue by Iron Maiden is 70 euros the same exact vinyl is $29 so it is more than double here in Europe once I saw that I ordered it right away I have Kill em all on CD on cassette and now on vinyl lyrics and all these great pictures I have the CD used why because I picked it up at the sound exchange in Wayne New Jersey I believe it is maybe that's not Wayne
but you got route 23 to go there in Wayne so I think I'm I might be off by few towns but anyway I can't get the insert back anyway so I bought that used because it had am I evil and Blitzkrieg I wanted that copy that's what I have this obviously ends with metal militia so yeah probably with all this discussion of master puppets versus ride the lightning I'm a ride the lightning guy I don't have master puppets on vinyl I could have picked it up maybe next time I just listened to this album
a lot more master puppets for most of you that know and for a lot of people it's sacrilegious what I'm about to say I understand that for a lot of people it's the greatest metal album of all time to me I like the album but I've heard it so much that I'm kind of burned out on it but lyric insert pictures of the band and listen I'd love to get the box sets for these but I don't want to spend the grand to catch up and get all of these so this is you would expect if
kilomal is red right the lightning is blue you all right as I fumble to putting all this stuff away it's funny I went from thinking can I fill it our showing off vinyl and talking about vinyl to maybe I've got too much here I'm gonna go way over an hour so we'll see we shall play it by ear we're almost at the halfway point here and there's still a lot to go here Metallica doesn't stop there because and justice for all and this is a double vinyl it's interesting that they didn't
do a gatefold with this or it's just two albums crammed into the one jacket here so erics with a lot of graphics that we all kind of know pictures that I've seen quite a few times depending on what stage in life I would have told you that and justice was was my favorite there's been times where it's right the lightning times where it's been death magnetic as sacrilegious as that may sound but a green vinyl and yeah so there you go
and justice so you think that the Metallica stops here it does not and probably the most hated album of of the bunch all right the the dramatic pause there Saint anger all right so there are songs off of St. Anger that I really like I don't know how much longer this will be available on vinyl master puppets I'm gonna be able to get at any time because it is so popular this not so sure because of how much disdain people have for it
so St. Anger is orange to go along with the cover with the cover the covers orange so there you go we have the inserts that I have the CD I sold the CD because it was limited edition with the DVD that suppose it was only released for a short amount of time you can still get it with the DVD so I don't own the the CD anymore a band that Metallica has covered and this is a weird one because this one it took me a while to place it on discogs it is American Psycho by the Misfits it
is the first album with Michael Graves this was released in Poland and it was hard for me to track down it's on Plan 9 says Maiden Pole in there at the bottom some people do not acknowledge anything of the band past Glenn Danzig I do love all errors of the band so there's that all right this is from last year this is a hundred eighty gram it is Aftermath by Angela Sepatrida and I hadn't opened this till today so I wanted to throw this
in there hopefully get to see the band in December they'll be playing close to me hopefully the stars will align the last few times that they've come close I've been away at tournaments and different things so here we go lyrics band photo more lyrics and nothing extravagant this time I mean I have colored vinyl by them just black I have essentially everything that they've released and with Metallica I actually have everything on vinyl except for no
I don't have everything on vinyl because I don't have loader reload one I really like one I don't care for I don't have master puppets I don't have garage ink although I do have the reissue of garage days revisited you get a quick drink of water here excuse me all right so let's move on here with some sacred rike and heel this was their last album until they released awakening in 2019 this was originally released in 96 so this was produced by Bill Mattoyer and sacred rike
recorded between August and October of 95 this was mastered for vinyl by Patrick Engel at temple of disharmony in March of 2024 very cool so this is copy 285 of 300 worldwide it is translucent blue steel I have this on CD so once this was reissued on vinyl I had to have it this was never released on vinyl back in the day so it's pretty cool I guess you can kind of make it out for me since I'm looking at it through light through that ring light it's a little clearer all right
two albums by a band that also disappeared for for a while this is 180 gram it is from music on vinyl it is living color and times up man I saw that they reissued this and I had to jump on it this was something that I purchased on cassette back in the day still have the cassette still the CD and I also have the vinyl obviously so I'm one this was probably released on vinyl back in the day probably wasn't extensively released
but man I know vivid is the album that most people turn to but times up is just so great this has so many good songs on it and they're so varied I mean times up was a video love ears that's ugly head was a video they played new jack theme on our Seno Hall I've that on vhs somewhere Elvis is dead was a single type was a single solace of you I remember on local radio New York WNEW would play that song all the time it's so different to the rest of the album so that's what I think
makes it so great is that it is different trying to get this back into the plastic container all right but not to be outdone I also have stained I had this on CD I like this I don't love it as much as time's up but again moved to Europe needed money and I sold it because it came in a red case and it also had a bonus track a cover them covering Prince a Prince track called 17 days 180 gram as well just black vinyl nothing out of the ordinary there
you take for granted when you have this stuff on CD and I would have to think that this maybe never came out on vinyl back in the day I could look it up on this cogs there was a lot of stuff that was just radio station copies as well was sent to DJ's and it really didn't really wasn't released to the general public so there's some of that yeah put this back in the bag as well all right so this is one that I've had for a few years but it's been behind me
since like the pre-special that we did 180 gram as download as well it is defenders of the faith it is one of the all-time greatest metal albums it's just black vinyl I mean nothing out of the ordinary again something that I've had and I just opened it so need to play more vinyl how about that not to be outdone invincible shield limited edition red vinyl this is so cool seeing this so this is split up as just like two to three songs
per side so it has to be like 45 speed disc one side a is panic attack the serpent and the king side B is invincible shield devil in disguise gates of hell side C is crown of thorns as God is my witness trial by fire side D is escape from reality sons of thunder and giants in the sky now I have this on CD as well and it has bonus tracks as fight for your life vicious circle and the lodger so there's that so let's look at the vinyl itself
all right that's the double gatefold what do we have here cool thing about newer jackets is that they also take time to add color to the inside back in the day that was always just white really cool graphics for each song and man that's red edition red vinyl priest has done something that no other band has done really this late in their career putting out the albums that they've released which is red as well I mean this is funny because I have Judas Priest socks and they have that same
design the priest cross and all that stuff but yeah to release two albums back-to-back firepower and to release this one it is really cool it is really cool it's some great music I mean let's let's be honest that's where it's all at another music on vinyl it is Widowmaker standby for pain limited to 750 copies individually numbered gold colored vinyl first time on vinyl includes insert so this is such an awesome album I would take this
and the last two decider albums which I also have on vinyl and I would measure them up against almost any big name metal musicians solo project I mean what's in the same league some of Bruce's stuff some of Bruce Dickinson stuff some of Rob Halfords stuff there isn't much more out there so deal was my very first interview wish I could interview him again pretty much out of my pay grade at the moment someday maybe the gold
the good the gold the great this is so heavy in punishing this album this is what I love about it when Dee came back and started doing all this other stuff and I get it he was trying to sow his oats per se but the heaviness on this album is where it's at in my opinion so oops another my kid never good folks never good all right another music on vinyl these are all reissues this is an album that's going to be celebrated live in its entirety which one I spoke to Joey Z for the first time
I asked about that since you're doing River Runs Red how about ugly so this is a rerelease when I saw this was coming out I had to get it and yeah this is similar to what Mark Striegel said this isn't like a black black this is like recycled cardboard so it doesn't have gloss it's kind of a matte finish I don't know if that was done on purpose or not I'm sure it was because they're trying to be conscious of the environment as a
result this doesn't you know the ring light doesn't do anything to it but black vinyl so pretty cool pretty cool great album though I know for a lot of people the big thing is their simple minds cover don't you forget about me but there's just so much good stuff off of here seasons I regret lost at 22 the other side of the river let's pretend ugly drained how it would be unstable damned if I do fears and don't you forget about me a lot of this
was played on WSOU back in the day local Jersey station which did a lot to break a lot of bands especially from the area break a lot of different metal bands in general so we'll always be grateful to them for that okay so here is something kind of special because I got to meet up with Mike Jones while I was in the States one of my patrons good friend and we discussed about how I had to sell off all this vinyl before moving to Spain
back in the early 2000s because I didn't know what space I was gonna have I needed the money as well and I thought that the next two albums were lost for good as a kid my brother bought the Rolling Stone still life on cassette I played it so much that I broke the cassette so for Christmas one year I bought him this album for years for the last 20 plus years I thought that I had put this in a box with the other vinyls that I had sold off without realizing it
I found it and I also found out that when I entered it into this cogs that a whole lot of people own this and you're thinking okay what's the big deal just the Rolling Stones live album but it was the first picture disc that I had ever seen that we had ever owned so it was awesome and it was funny because I told my brother I found it I found that I found still life it was in my closet it was under a bunch of kiss action figures and he says to me oh I thought that was in Spain already
nope but it will be in a few weeks the other thing that I have I completely forgot about this this is a radio station promo at least that's how I got it it is the surfers but whole surfers that is hope that YouTube doesn't knock the algorithm down for that but this is a 10 inch single and the color is fittingly brown it has this distinct smell that it's always had just the paper nothing nefarious about it but just so cool all right but there's two more items that I picked up actually
everything that I showed you guys after the Metallica the Metallica was
purchased in the States except for st. anger I picked that up here this I bought at the Princeton record exchange no I'm not getting paid to promote this at all but nine-inch nails the fragile it is halo 14 for those keeping score this is on 180 gram I have this on CD was one of the only things that I kept that I was given around the time of my first marriage I really love this album again booklet with all lyrics it is a king-size version of what I have on CD so this one side a and B
this is three discs by the way three discs for 40 bucks it's hard to open okay so that doesn't open anymore oh wow this was produced by Bob Ezra by the way if I'm not mistaken yeah I believe it was he's writing about it but anyway at the corner of nothing and nowhere sequencing the fragile by Bob Ezra okay so he says to be clear I played only the smallest part in the creation of the fragile here's after the project was started and only weeks before it ended I
was invited in as an objective voice to help create the running order for the album here's the story Wow this is really cool all right so this is the he recorded this in New Orleans I've got the same headphones there's jay-z interesting so I guess the original reissue this was 2016 because that's the date of when that was written either way this is this two and this three so again I got a triple vinyl here the $39.99 plus tax at the Princeton Sound Exchange seems like a good deal to me
all right so one more thing I didn't put the protector sleeve on the plastic sleeve here got a few more minutes here about eight minutes to go and if this takes me way too long then I will just do it after because I want to show this last item off shit I broke it and I keep breaking it ok all right so the last item if you've seen the last few shows that I've recorded with Jeremy you'll have seen this behind me the Anno Domini box set it is the Tony Martin years 89 through 95
all right so let's see what is in here we have this booklet this giant booklet while detailing a lot of different things it's missing eternal idol but I get it because that was a Warner Brothers release and these are all IRS releases would have been need if they would have included cross purposes live also but they didn't looks like a huge headless cross poster some of these albums vinyl for the very first time you do have headless cross you have to hear you have cross purposes
and you have forbidden I have all of these on CD it's funny because I've listened to forbidden quite a bit I do like what they've done with it I do think certain things are missing like with illusion of power if I could get the current mix with the original intro I would be good with that I can't wait to listen to this stuff on vinyl on a proper turntable where it will all sound great but I have a lot of vinyl behind me which I can't wait to do
so turntable I have is not the greatest but it's serviceable and I'm hoping to some somewhere down the road pick up something that's a little better than that but anyway guys I hope you enjoyed this episode I hope you enjoyed the vinyl hall episode here I may do this in the future I may do it with some other guests where we kind of share some of the stuff from our collection and yeah so some new things here with the live show we have the different streaming stuff or
we have the ticker tape across the bottom ticker tape how do you say it sorry don't know if I'm without my words here but getting you guys to social media and the website also posted something about voting for 1988 don't forget please send your votes in your lists in by Wednesday the 23rd hit me up on whatever social media platform you usually follow me on if not you can always send an email to signals from Mars at signals from Mars calm and that
