She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
Hello and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast for millennials who want financial freedom. Today's Friday, which means it's time to kick back with the girls and a BEV in hand to unpack our favorite moments of the week, and of course, to celebrate you the incredible She's on the Money community. As always, we're going to share our
favorite money wins. We're going to talk about some super fun news finance news, but also She's on the Money news spoiler alert, it's really exciting and we're going to be answering a juicy, juicy money question this week. It's just me and Georgia King.
It certainly is Hello, Jessica Lucci. How are you by, girl? I'm good?
How are you done?
I'm good. Hey, this is not the setup we expected today.
It's not the setup we expected, but it's the setup we got. VD was here very intimately. She's having internet issues. We did try to make it work, but we got about three letters in every time and it just was not happening. So once again we're back for a what do we call it? Last time Q and A with Oh, Yes, G and J Yes feels fair.
Yeah, so back again.
If anyone's heard our last Q and A with G and J, we're taking the wheel. It's going to be a wild ride because there's no one controllers.
That's it. Yes, yes, but it's Friday.
What's what's everyone on Friday?
If not a little loose, you've nailed it, j Rick. I believe the place we usually start is by talking about money. Monday Money Mondays a new thing. Money diary
Mondays talk around what happened this week. This week we spoke to a lovely girl I always and I really liked her story because she actually self described her when she wrote in as just an average person, which you know, it's not literally, but sometimes I think it's nice to hear from someone who's just plodding along some you know, we try and really diversify these money stories and money diaries, but sometimes we get people saying, oh, I feel like
I can't relate because they've done things I haven't. And while the point of course of everything is to share different opinions and perspectives and places, sometimes I think it is just nice to have an average person.
Yep, definitely so the diaries. This week she spoke a lot about her debt. She had some really really soul crushing debt in her earlier days, and you know, challenged herself to find the light at the end of the tunnel. And I think one of the parting things that she said in her episode was that she just wanted people to know that no matter who you are, you can get there. Like she said, I know it seems overwhelming, I know it's really hard, but there is hope. You
just have to persevere. And that really sat with me. I was like, oh my god, like it's so true. And you know I've spoken before. I've been down that consumer debt rabbit hole. So many people in our community have as well. And you know, sometimes we find ourselves in lucky situations where we have some money back from the ATO or an inheritance, and that's so helpful, and sometimes you just have to slog it out and make sacrifice.
And that is what she did. So it was a really really good I know she used the word average, but I'm not. I don't think she was average. I think she was incredible, but a really good Listen if you're in a similar position.
That sounds amazing.
It was really really good. But what did you guys talk about on the Wednesday Deep DIVET What.
Did we talk about? Jessica Icci. Actually, this week it was all about inheritances, Jessica Ricie. So we kind of discussed a few things, including like exactly what they are and how they work, but also what you're actually meant to do when you receive a huge lump sum of money. I mean, it's not always huge, but that it's kind of it can be quite confusing for a lot of people. If say you've just been transferred like fifty grand or something like that, it's like what on earth you meant
to do with that? And people do tend to churn through it really quickly, and we kind of we spoke about the psychology around money earned versus money kind of one, not that in inheritance is money one at all, but it's kind of that line of thinking. So it was really interesting to delve into that. And we also spoke about guilt around inherited money as well. So it was a really interesting episode and it's something that most of us will face. Let me just pull up the stats.
So boomers are expected to leave behind two hundred and twenty four billion dollars each year in inheritances by twenty fifty, so there's a lot of money coming our way, and it was just really helpful to kind of talk through what we should actually be doing with that money, to make sure that we're kind of doing the right thing.
Oh one thousand percent. I remember reading somewhere that it's the biggest shift of generational wealth to ever occur in history, which is wild. And yes, some of us will inherit large sum some of us might inherit smaller amounts, but I feel like we don't necessarily consider the tax implications and those kind of things. And as we've said before, VD specializes in dealing with clients with inheritances, so I feel like the insights she had to share there would
have been fantastic. It was primo give it a listen, for sure, But you know what else is primo to talk money? Wins threat segue my favorite thread of the week. I live for this threat. It's so exciting. Have you got some goodies for us this week?
Or I do have some goodies? There were some really weird ones this week which I loved, So let's get straight into them with one of my absolute favorites. So The first one this week just comes from Emily. We picked up a cubby off marketplace for fifty dollars and turned it into an awesome coop for our new baby chicks. That was rather than spending four hundred dollars plus on
a new one, and even better money win. We then picked one up free on curbside collection yesterday that we're going to paint and make into a chicken town.
The one we got was the one we got for free. It was five hundred and fifty dollars.
New money win. How good's that? Chicken town? Chickens?
Oh my god, please, chickens are my favorite. I don't know what it is about them. I think they're so cute. Third money win. I assume she's going to have eggs at some point. My mother, well she's not my mother in law technically, but my future mother in law has three chickens and we have not bought eggs since she got them because they just go to town on the lanes.
And they are they some fresh some fresh gooobies there.
Are huge and they're so much bigger than the ones that you get at the shops as well. Sometimes because obviously we're families, so like Okay, sometimes you've got to brush a little bit of grass and poop official, but totally fine, stunning. We'll look forward to that, Emily. The next win Jess is from Mackenzie. I've spent weeks searching for my favorite birbery perfume, as it has been sold out from chemist Warehouse for months. At chemist Warehouse it
is one hundred and ten dollars. That is a hot price, but she wants to avoid buying it from David Jones, where it's two hundred and twenty four dollars. Finally, she found it on catch for one hundred and twenty dollars, and then her brother ended up giving her money as a belated birthday present, so she used that for the perfume. It's a money win. Oh my god, incredible. That's a lot of money for a perfume. Two hundred dollars. I
mean it does last you bye, Well that's it. If you can get it for the last why not precisely. The next win is from Lani. I found a delightful cow kettle a cattle if you will, she wrote, for thirty eight dollars in an antique store. I'm counting it as a money win. Because even though I hadn't really set out that day to buy myself a cow tea kettle, it brings me so much joy, and I feel like it was still a very deliberate purchase. I'm still saving for my house deposit, but my future house will be
filled with kooky, beautiful items that make me happy. That's definitely a money win.
I love just a different Did you see the photo of this in the group?
Oh my god? Yes, so funny. If you haven't seen it, go look at the thread.
I die.
Yeah, it's amazing. Okay. The next win here is from Tyler money Win. I paid off the debt I had chosen for January and already made my money saving goal for February, so anything extra now goes to the next bill I'm working to pay off single mom life, so I am determined to stick to my goals for us a wholesome money win bear. The next win is from Claire. We watched a YouTube video as to how to unblock
my bathroom sink offers on air. Tasker started at one hundred and thirty dollars, but I worked it out on my own wholesome little bit of DIY.
We love to see the ladies doing it for themselves. We do really a line like don't rip the pumping out of your wall.
Don't do that.
You would be surprised. I think, who was it? I saw flex mummy talking about this the other day and it's it wasn't specific to this situation, but she was saying Google is so easy and in this day and age people, I mean, we all do it. We pay for convenience, and there's nothing wrong with that, But don't underestimate the ability to solve a problem with Google, like the amount of things that you can fix just by giving it a quick Google.
Absolutely really is.
She's done here, and that's what one hundred and thirty dollars in her back pocket that she did not have to spend.
Precisely that it's quite similar to like doctor Google and things like that. Who needs the doctors when you've got Google's. There was a little gag there for everyone. Okay, let's move on. Actually, between this the chicken coop and the cow kettle, I'm not quite sure which is my fave, but let's hear it. Money Win. Sorry, it's from Shaney Credit where credits due Money Win. I forgot to buy potatoes during my grocery shop on Saturday as well as
fruit happens to us all. Yesterday I popped to the shops to get some fruit for the week and found two bags of spud Light potato reduced to a dollar eighty each, down from five dollars. So I got double the potatoes for less than one bag normally. How can this community truly just did my tea? No, I know, I think the potato win, we could just be your favorite. Okay, that takes me to my final win for today, j Rick.
So it's from Melinda. She managed to pick up a pretty much brand new dice in V six for ten dollars to someone I know, for someone who's trying to navigate a relationship ending and buying my own things to my own place, this was a huge win. That's actually like insane that I don't get off.
That is clearly the universe going, hey, we know you're having a hard time. I got your back, girl, precisely sending you lots of love. I hope you're doing okay through the breakup, but I mean, if anything's going to make you feel better at the ten dollar dison.
So what a gift? That is it? For the week? J Rick until next time.
Immaculate as always, truly my favorite part of the week. Dread I Die. If you haven't searched it up, you can search money Wins thread. It's pinned in the group as well. Get amongst He's always at a time we love already George. I know we normally do a topical finance thing here. This is very topical to finance people within our finance community, so I'm gonna include it because I just I need to talk about this. I'm so excited. If you don't follow us on socials, you wouldn't know
she's on the money. You're doing events. Yeah, finally we're back. It's been a long, long slog to get here. Events were planned and then they were canceled. It's been a whole thing, so much going on behind the scenes that you guys wouldn't have even seen because we were a little sad about it. But we're back. We've got two events planned for International Women's Day as well, which just felt so appropriate. So we have an event in Melbourne on Tuesday, the eighth of March, and then an event
in Sydney on Thursday the tenth. Both are celebrating International Women's day and we just have a banger of a day lined up. It is a morning event. We tried to make sure that it would finish up early, which is pretty typical of these International Women's Day events, so that you could pop in the morning before work and not have to miss a day because we don't want to get in between you and making that sweet cash money.
Okay, so it's a morning event. There's one in Sydney, Yeah, and there's one in Melbourne. Correct I hear. We've got some guest speakers lined up. Talk us through them.
Oh my goodness. Yes, So we have two incredible speakers at each event. The theme this year, if you didn't know, is break the Bias for International Women's Day, and we've really tried to lean into this with the guests that we have coming on board. So in Melbourne we have Ashley Strata Jones who she's a writer, she's a speaker, an activist of course, and she founded Raise our Voice Australia, which is aimed specifically at boosting the number of diverse
voices involved in public decision making. So we want females, we want our non binary friends, people that we don't normally see being represented who should absolutely be getting a seat at the table and having their say, and so Ashley has been a huge campaigner for that, and she's been a really big driving force behind that campaign which you might have recently see come into play about consent being now a mandatory part of school education, which how
we went this far without that Lord only knows, but a huge change that she was a really active part of pushing. So she will be just so incredible. I'm really really excited to hear her chat. And then also in Melbourn we have Maria Tattle, who you might know. She's been around quite a bit. Recently she was on I'm a Celeb. She was of course Miss Universe, yes I think it was twenty twenty. And she's also of course been announced recently as the face of Marty Grass.
So she's this incredible South Asian media personality. She's a huge advocate again for diversity, incredibly talented. She's a model, a writer, a commentator, speaker, and she really works to create meaningful dialogue and campaign for change as well, which we thought was so fantastic. She's also very funny. I follow her on TikTok and she is just one of
those women who really seems to have it all. She's gorgeous, she's well spoken, she's very well educated, and I often see a lot of discourse in her comments from the men just really coming for her, and she always handles them with such grace and such voice. Good. So again a really reasoned voice that I cannot wait to hear. And then in Sydney, another two fabulous women. We have Manal al Sharif, who, oh my god, what a powerhouse.
I am dying to hear this speech. She again really influential, but she was a huge voice in advocating for women's rights and empowerment, specifically the women to Drive movement if you've heard of me, yep, which was an absolute banger. The women to Drive movement essentially encourage women to step up and quite literally put their foot on the pedal. In Saudi Arabia, women didn't drive, it just wasn't using.
And this was very very recent She posted I believe, videos of herself online driving, which, as you can imagine, spark some pretty significant controversy. But it was that action of hers that really facilitated that change, and women to Drive really swept across the nation and now they're doing it. It's just it's absolutely incredible. She of course also has written a book on the same topic and just done
a lot of other incredible work in that space. So I think that that's going to be a really interesting one, particularly because it's global. You know, we talk a lot about women. Most of our community is based in Australia. I think it's going to be incredible to hear a little bit more about how she really worked to break the bias on a global scale quite literally.
Yeah, wow, that's some incredible And who's the second speaker.
Our final speaker is Tracy Spicer, who people I think might recognize because she's worked in journalism and broadcast media. She accepted the Sydney Peace Prize for her work on the Me Too movement and she actually also won the National Award for Excellence in Women's Leadership through Women in Leadership Australia. Again just really campaigning for women. The Me Too movement we can all agree was huge and incredible and is still huge and incredible and such important work.
And I think as a woman in media, I'm not really a woman in media like she's on one that is. I mean, she's on one is media, but Tracy was very present in traditional media, so daytime television, and I think that there needs to be an acknowledgement of the amount of pressure that those women must feel to look after their jobs, which absolutely should not be a thing.
But you know, it's towing that line of sharing what you think is right, that what is appropriate, and I can imagine that that would be really challenging to sometimes walk that line. And we have heard women, I think, as this movement's come out more and more talk about that and talk about how sometimes they look to the other way. And that's where this Meetia two movement really kind of kicked off and made some significant change in
that space. So she's a seasoned professional, she's been around for many years, and I think she's going to have a lot of really insightful information to share with us in the community.
How exciting. So we've got amazing speakers. Vickid will be there, You and I will be there. How exciting. Yeah, And there's also going to be some freebies, which I am fairly excited about. Heard some whispers about some free oat lattes. Is this true?
Oh my gosh. Of course, we know we all love a freebie, We love a money win, So you're absolutely correct. There's going to be an Oatmelk glasses stand of course, very on brand. There's going to be breakfast cannopees, of course because it's an early morning. And we have these incredible gift bags. If I do say so myself, they're literally worth more than what you're paying for a ticket. So okay, you're making money.
Are you able to tell us what's in them? Or is it like a surprise for the day. Oh, you know.
What, let me give you a little insight. So the big thing for us is we did not want this to be an event where it's like, here's a brochure and a pen, thank you so much for coming. So we've spoken to some brands and you'll recognize every name on this list because they're all brands that the She's on the Money team use and love. So my go to the viral skin exfoliating glove that we're all obsessed with.
You're going to get one of those Sirene's skincare. If you follow Victoria, she is obsessed with their foam to Joel cleanser. She got me on Twitter as well. It's incredible. You're going to get one of them. Aliekd are supplying accessories, our faves I know our faves literally the unofficial uniform of the year from the team Bang and Body. The moisturizer, I don't know have you used it before doing this girl?
Oh that's stuff is the best. God, it smells good.
So good. So everyone's going to get one of them. Our Melbourne friends are going to get a copy of Frankie mag The team at Benefit are giving us brow products. Yes you can drinks. Are going to pop some alcohol free because there's no age limit on a ten, so alcohol free beverages in. And then we're also popping in the ses on the Money Daily notepad and some stickers. You might have seen them floating around. You can't actually buy those. They're just something that we give away when
we do giveaways some stuff. So everyone's going to get about as well. We're still chatting to a few brands. There might even be a few more surprises. If you are a brand that you're a friend of the show and you want to get in on it, sign into our dms. But it's going to be spectacular. It's already worth over one hundred and fifty dollars, which is amazing. We're not going to send you home empty handed. We just couldn't do it.
No, And Joe Rick, you know what the best part. I mean, there's a lot of best parts to these events, but the Shoes on the Money community is going to have a chance to meet each other in the flesh, and they really haven't had the opportunity to do that in the last two years. Like it's it's going to be great.
It's going to be great. It's not even about like, I'm so excited that we get to meet you and hugut and squeeze you. But I think outside of that, there's going to be a couple of hundred people in that room who share your interest and share your passion, and we've specifically allocated time for people to meet each other and mingle, and we're going to facilitate that in a way that it's not super awkward, because as a socially anxious person, I would hear that and be so afraid.
So don't stress. But we really hope that you can make some friends who are local to you that you can connect with and lean on, because sometimes we do talk about in the community it can be hard working on those big goals, right ge when you don't have friends who share that value or that vision. And it's not a bad thing, but everyone's on their own journey and sometimes you just want a friend that you can text and say, hey, I got a one dollar bag of potatoes. You want them to sealry?
Yes, I can't wait, So I'm assuming we'll put like a link in the show notes for the girlies to find out more.
Absolutely check it out. All the details are there. Melbourne and Sydney tickets are available now. They are limited, and I don't mean to say that to be like you must buy, please sleep on the purchase if you need to, But I didn't want to just be like they're infinite, because they're still capacity limits on venues and stuff like that. So check it out. If you have any questions, slide into our DMS let us know. But we are so
pumped to see you now. I literally cannot wait. It's all I think about every day and probably will think about every day for the next couple of weeks. You and b both my girl. Should we head to a break Yeah, absolutely, We'll be back right in a second. It is Friday, which means it's time to answer your
most burning finance, career and life questions. If you need help untangling a naughty dilemma, no matter how big or small, send us through a voice note to podcast at She's on the money dot com dot a U and will help you find the answer you've been searching for. Now, let's press play on today's listener question.
Hi, She's in the Money team. I'm in a bit of an awkward situation. So a really good friend of mine has asked to borrow two and a half thousand dollars. I've actually been working my journey towards financial freedom for some time, and I often share my wings with her, so she knows that I can afford it. I feel a little bit uncomfortable with the whole situation, but I don't know how to say no without seeing like a bad friend.
What should I do?
Alrighty straight into it, Jessica Richie, what are your thoughts?
My girl?
It's a really tough one. As I've said before, I am someone who likes to catastrophize, so I am fully on board with some healthy skepticism. I do not think it's a bad thing. It doesn't say anything about your relationship with your friend or how much you trust her, But I think when we're talking about big sums of money,
it's important to ask these questions. So firstly, good on her I personally, and I can only speak from my personal experience, especially because we don't have the finance expert here, we're just giving it a good old hunt. But I personally do not believe I would lend a friend this money.
It's hard because it is dependent as well on circumstance, like if your friend is potentially trying to leave a dangerous situation or I can totally understand where there might be that need, but if that is the case, there is also resources available to assist people. So depending on what she needs the money for, I think is going to really impact your decision. And so if she's in a lot of debt, put her in touch with our
friends at the National Debt Helpline. If she is in a dangerous situation, go back and listen to our financial abuse episode. There's a heap of resources in there that she can access that's applicable to any kind of abusive situation. Really, if she's just in a bit of a tight spot where she's overspent and can't afford rent this month, I don't want to sound like an asshole. I really don't.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but I worry that by bailing someone out, potentially you're enabling that bad habit. There are very few situations financially where you can't get a bit of leeway. So if she is late on her rent or on her bills, she can actually just get in touch with her provider and let them know that she's experiencing financial hardship. I think that's an option. A lot of people don't know he's on the table,
so that's the case. Let her know that she can reach out and facilitate a payment plan or something like that. But as much as you say you can afford it, which is great, you've obviously worked really hard to put yourself in that position, you have to consider that the
money you put out there might not come back. And again, very skeptical of me to say, I know that she's a good friend of yours and you said you trust her and whatever else, but I don't think you should ever put money out there unless you're prepared to not get it back because you just don't know.
No, I one hundred percent agree with you. If you're going to be lending really any amount of money to a friend or even a family member, you just need to know that it's not pretty likely, but there's a good chance you won't get it back, and there's kind of not much you can do about that. And we know that money and friendships and money and relationships with like family members, it can get really sticky really quickly. And I find like people's relationship with money it can
also be quite confusing. Like I feel like people can kind of convince themselves that the money that they've been lent has been given to them and it's their money, Like they kind of can tell themselves these stories about that money. Does that make any kind of sense?
Jets, Yeah, I think so. I saw actually a post in the group. It was a little while back now, but it was someone saying that she actually had let money to someone that she lived with, and then they had a heap of packages coming to the house. And it's hard because you leent, you know, I assume you're going to lend this money in the hope that it's going to some broad or important situation. But then are
you going to be fact checking what she's doing? You know, if she goes out for dinner or goes out for drinks, You're going to be questioning those choices because I think the other element to this, outside of the potential loss of the actual money, is the impact that it's going to have on your relationship, because I mean, is she going to pay it back in two weeks? Is she going to pay it back in two months? Is it just when she can afford it? Because I think all
of those things factor in. And if she's like, oh, I'm really sorry, like I can't afford to pay you back for a couple of months, are you then going to be kind of watching what she's doing and getting frustrated with her? And is that going to kind of impact the way that you relate to each other, Because I think you need to put some value on that
as well. And I know that it's really hard, Like I know that she's asking this question because she doesn't know how to have that conversation or if it's okay to have that conversation, and it absolutely is. Is I think the first thing we should probably say, Like you were allowed to say no, it doesn't make you a bad person, but gee, how would you maybe go about having that conversation with someone because as you said, it is very sticky.
Yeah, as in saying no.
Yeah, Like let's say she's going to go no, I'm really sorry. It just doesn't seem like the right choice for me. How do you reckon? She could best have that that chat?
Okay, So you would definitely want it to be an in person chat, I would suggest. I think these things can get quite toxic quite quickly if they're done via a messaging app or service, So avoid text, avoid WhatsApp, avoid messenger, because you know how we can all be tone gets missed and things get weird. So yes, in
person is the way to go. And I would just be really honest and upfront and really lean on the fact that you don't want this to jeopardize your friendship in any way because you value that way too much, and probably just point them into the direction of the
resources that could help them. If you're a regular listener to Sheese on the Money, as it sounds like you are, if you're sending us in your question, then yeah, you'll know as just said before that we have the National Debt Helpline who we lean on all the time, and there are a number of services out there that can help and Yeah, as you said before, j Rick, like a lot of providers, if she's behind on her bills or her rent, they are often willing to give you
a little bit of leeway if push comes to shove. So I think probably explaining that to her and then yeah, just really reiterating how special the friendship is and how you really don't want to jeopardize that would be my key takeaways. And yeah, doing it in person, yeah, anything.
Yeah, I think I would just say, if you're a little worse like me and not great on the confrontation front, depending on how much I guess of your financial journey you've shared, don't be afraid to I don't want to say lie. I'm not gonna say lie, but just fabricate some truth, yeah, in the sense of you don't have to justify this decision or every dollar that you have.
So if you're really worried about hurting her feelings or anything like that, you could potentially just say, hey, like, my money's actually tied up in stocks, or it's in an high interest savings account that I can't access, or I'm penalized if I access it. Just because you have money or you have assets doesn't necessarily mean that you have easy access to it. And again, you don't have to justify that to someone. So if you are someone who has a little bit of trouble in those situations,
something like that might be helpful. Obviously we don't condone lying on the rig, but.
You know, starting a little bit of mayo, a little bit can mayo.
To your story to preserve a friendship, I think can be worthwhile. And again going into it if that's what you're saying and saying, hey, like I actually can't help you, but here's a heap of resources that can Like I found the email or the phone number, or did you know you can call your bank to get a pause
on your credit card repayments or anything like that. You know, it's incredible that you want to help her, that's really generous and really kind, but you also are not obliged to put yourself in a situation that you don't want to be in financially.
Yeah, and I think also like it probably is a really big deal for this friend to be opening up to you and saying, hey, I'm not in a good financial position, can you help me out? Like that's they're putting themselves in a very vulnerable situation, So just listening to them and maybe even lending them some of your shoes on the money expertise, suggesting they listen to the podcast to try and get their finances on track. I think they can be really helpful things as well. So
just yeah, be very kind as always. But yeah, it's a tricky one. But two and a half thousand dollars that is not play money? Is that the expression? That's re di digitch cash?
Yeah, exactly right, And I think it is like we're talking very generally, but very dependent on the situation, seeing if you can help in other ways. You know, do they need help with putting together a budget, or do they need help with maybe figuring out how to cut down their expenses. There are other ways that you can definitely lean into helping her save money that don't require you coughing up your own cash.
Yeah, one hundred percent, Ja, Rick, I feel like you had some very good ideas, as you always do. Who needs Victoria divine? I think it's for Jessica Richie show, stop it the G and J Show. We're coming for you, but also not really Victoria. We miss you.
Please come back to.
