Hello, my name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud yr
the Order Kerni Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country, acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing and the storytelling of you to make a difference for today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
Let's get into it. She's on the Money.
She's on the Money. Hello, and welcome to She's on Them the podcast for millennials who want to.
Go to Taylor Swift.
Today is Friday, which means it is time to get the team together and celebrate you our incredible She's on the Money community. Today we're going to be sharing our
favorite money wins. We're going to be helping to answer a very juicy money dilemma, which this week is all about emergency funds for travel, and we're going to be unpacking something you slid into our DMS about And this week we're going to be chatting about should you pay when someone else is driving you and you get a fine, which I think is going to get a little bit spicy. But my friends, Beck, you're here, Miss jessic Ricci, you're here as always.
How have your week's been? Mine has been so relaxing. It's relaxing work. Yeah, and I'm just on cloud night, like.
You know how much you love your job before. We will always be the best, so true.
So it's been yeah, super chill too chill.
Oh good.
I'm still leating Easter eggs, are you? Guys?
We literally have Easter eggs on the desk right now, and Ess is brought in those American marshmallow rabbit things.
Sorry the peeps they're not their chickens.
I don't know what they are, little bodies, but Jess, you always embrace effective season.
How was your Easter? So good?
My little fresh baby nephew got dressed up in a little rabbit costume.
Eat him.
I would have eaten it.
It was delicious and ever so edible, but it was really fun. It was so good, family time, lots of chocolate. I don't know what else you could possibly ask for.
Really, how good?
Mine was very, very similar, lots of babies, yes, lots of kids around, lots of making sure that there was some dinner on the table by five point thirty pm, which I am not used to. There was way more screaming in our household over the weekend than has ever been before. But it was really, really good. And I have decided to plan my Barbie birthday party.
Oh yeah, We've planned our Barbie birthday party.
And Jessica Ici has said that she will also sell a kidney for a Taylor Swift ticket. They come out, it's all happening. Yeah, we're very excited.
Taylor Swift is listening to the podcast, which I am not myself. I don't know, guys, I think she might.
She's like, hey, I'm literally worth hundreds of millions, then some budget to.
She kind of wants to know how to budget.
I don't know.
She's a girl's girl, Like, if anyone's going to support the girlies, I'm convinced.
Yeah, Swift, So you know, you know, we will.
Basically say that we're endorsed by Taylor Swift if that's the case basically. But before we get into some pr issues, Jessica, you have some community money wins for us. Can you do a little quick whipp around of your faves from this week? Sure?
Can?
A bit of a self care theme this week's My first money win comes from Brianna, who said money win. One of my girlfriends who used to study skincare offered to give me an at home facial and teach me how to look after my specific skin type on a budget. I've been finding it so hard to justify my expensive cosmeceutical skincare with the rising cost of living, so this came at the perfect time.
How good can we have that list? Yeah?
Taking applications for new friends who have cosmetics licenses. If you would like to give me facials at home, Yeah, I'm willing willing to take that sacrifice.
Love that.
My next money win came from Jess, who said I booked all of my europ accommodation using a shot back. Total game changer. Anyone who's lucky enough to be booking a holiday, I would be making sure you get your cash back because you will save yourself a pretty penny.
My next money win came from Rebecca, who said, I randomly thought I would check Deepop for the dress I've been eyeing off for an upcoming wedding and I found the exact dress in my size for a third of the price and it had only been listed twelve hours earlier. Oh my god, wow, perfect, immaculate. My next money win is from Alana, who said I desperately needed a massage and went to the massage clinic at a tape where students practice a one hour of remedial massage on you for only fifteen dollars.
Sorry, what that is a great idea.
Let's go.
All it was required at the end is filling out a feedback form on how this it was an amazing experience and not to mention a relaxic one.
Oh my gosh, that's actually the biggest money win of the year. You can't even buy anything for fifteen dollars a year's day.
If you're in Melbourne, there is a tafe.
I think it's a beauty clinic on in the city. It's in the city about finds Elie Lucas.
I think so.
Yeah, I used to go there and get like my eyelashes tinted, or like facials and stuff.
You can get massages, yeah, I'm sure you can. Okay, Oh my god, I'm slow key.
Look up your local tape, it's a lot cheaper, and honestly, if anything, I feel like they're going to be better because they're trying, like they're practicing, they're at school, they're trying really hard to be good and do their best possible job.
One hundred percent. Also on that, I think it's important. So my hairdresser Boder, I'm obsessed with them. They've obviously got sounds everywhere, but I go to the one in Richmond. If you follow hairdressers on Instagram, often they'll post things like, oh, we need a hair model for this, or we need like a hair model for a blowwave. And the other day I saw the Boda had done a like oh we need like three blowwave models, and I was like, if I was free, I would take the reblowave.
Yeah, Like can you imagine they do highlights and stuff too.
I'm pretty su When I was younger, I got my highlights done once for free because I needed someone to practice on.
So it's a good idea to follow your favorite hairdresser and like keep an eye on their stories and see if they are ever wanting a hair model or anything, because you might end up with a free haircut, free hair color, or even like a severely discounted one at best, so huge. Anyway, that's my hot tip.
I really like that. It's actually very very smart. That's a good one.
I don't know if everyone does it, but I do know bod does, so get in on it.
Next money Win comes from Zoe, who said money win where when I got East Chocolate, the half price lind Bunnies were four dollars and my favorite Ferrero Royshare mini eggs were three dollars twenty five for packet genius.
Did you play that?
I did not. That's from Zoe from Zoe Joey Scout.
Are you sure hold on?
Because it's a little bit convenient? Is it just?
How many packets of Kinder hazelnut mini eggs did you purchase.
This this Easter?
I would not like to disclose it. Information at this time may or may not be a double digit We.
Know it is.
She she disclosed to us before, and I was like, I don't even know when you're going to use all these.
But respect you can only get them at Easter exact once a year opportunity and they were half priced.
Okay, you know what money they're good year round, Yeah, they're good year round.
If they've got that little bit of white on them, still good.
It's still good.
It's extra prote and what is it antibotics? Last money when it comes from and she said everyone's money winds are so epic. I was so stoked this week because Muffin Break gave me and my kids six free scones under muffin Ye. They when we were walking past. We had a fancy scone with jam and cream breakfast this morning, gone or Scott the same sentenced Scot.
It's gone scone. If you're really rich and from Europe, yes, if you're posh, if you're push yeah, I gave you from Britain.
I did one of each pavoe to see that guarantee pockets.
That's it.
Oh yeah, he's actually my favorite.
He just like goes through. Oh he's great.
I'll send him to you.
Yes, effectively de influences so someone will be showing like things that they brought on Amazon to make their life more organized, and he just comments on it in such a satirical way. He's like, you take things out of boxes to put them in other little boxes.
No, you don't, because you're Popo.
Is taking good.
He's taking the Mickey out of over consumption, not you know, because it could be a bit.
Anybody like people's videos, so like you're watching theirs at the same time as him narrating its actually delete content.
So it sounds great.
Like yeah, that's me, but like I'm the opposite. I put the little clear containers in my fridge and now I feel attacked by this guy because he's not wrong. He's not wrong wrong my eggs.
He a clear carton.
Hope they didn't.
But you like it, and that's okay.
He's coming for me on that note.
That's the end of my money wins.
All right, Well, let's go to a really quick break because after the break, I want to talk about emergency funds for travel. I also want to talk about Taylor Swift Barbie parties. And we're also going to talk about what happens if you get a parking fine while driving for other people?
Should they be paying or should you be paying? Should you just cough it up because it's your car? I don't know.
Don't go anywhere, guys, because it is going to get hot. On the other side, Welcome back, everybody. I feel like it's getting into winter here in Australia. And we're all dreaming of travel, right, We're all dreaming of going somewhere else. Which, if you're Jess and you're embracing the warm winter coats and the fact that you can stay home and eat your ten packets of Easter eggs.
Living the dream, why would I ever want to leave? But this week's question is all about emergency funds for travel I believe.
Let's take a listen.

Hi, guys, good question about emergency funds for traveling. I'll be going overseas for about a month, mostly staying with family. I want to make sure that I have a emergency fund available, which is planned. But do you guys have any advice on making sure that that emergency fund is definitely sufficient? And I won't be caught out. I do have travel insurance organized, but obviously having emergency fund is
kind of important to me. Any advice on how to figure out how much should be in there to make sure that I don't become brick thanks.
First, like kudos to her for thinking an emergency fund, because I literally would go overseas and come back with not eve yeah, not even.
Yes, go to get McDonald's at the airport because you're like exhausted, and you're like, I deserve hash brown in your bank accounts, Like no, you don't.
No, you don't. You cannot afford a.
Single Okay, humbled, But I'll just wait for the dodgy plane food and hope that there's a wetash brown in that. Oh my gosh, plain food. Have you ever had anything crispy?
That's true? No, that's true.
Everything just comes out half steamed.
The steamers from up there, everything's steamed.
I don't know, I don't know, I don't e's efficient.
They're best back, they're in the sky. What do you expecting?
Their beggas can't be choosers.
Actually they can. Because Jess refuses to eat plain.
Food, Victoria gives me her role and I eat two rolls.
That's really he is very good. I also I'm really nice. I even donate the butter to her. I'm like, you can have the butter as well because you can't have a plane roll. And then if there's something she will eat, I just will be like, I know you'll eat this taked because I scared she's going to starve because she literally gets in the plane she's like, I'm not going to eat that.
Oh, great friend.
I don't know if I am a great friend, because the flip side is I'm like, what's in yours around yours? There's a trade happening.
That's a good trade off.
I feel like this.
Question is really important because it's something that none of us do when traveling, but it's actually really essential. So the first thing I was going to say before listening to the whole question, because I'm really good at jumping into conclusions before the actual question has been asked, is I was going to say travel insurance is your number one best friend. I've said it before on the podcast, and is it privileged to say? Absolutely it is? But
I think it's really important. I do not believe that you can afford to travel if you have not purchased travel insurance like, I don't care if you're saying, oh, but it makes the travel so much more expensive, cool, you can't afford to travel, Like, I don't care how aggressive I am with that, because I have seen the flip side of how expensive it can be, how dangerous it can be to travel without it. I have said it before as well, I want insurance to be the
biggest waste of money in the entire world. I want you to be like, well, I didn't use that travel insurance.
And I'll go good.
Yeah, because my good friend who ended up a paraplegic by jumping into a pool completely stone cold, sober in Bali, and had she not had travel insurance, she would have ended up in hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of debt just to get herself from Bali.
Back to Australia.
So it's one of those things where there's obviously always a worst case scenario and we should be planning for it. So that's why emergency funds are really important as well. So once you've got your insurance, the other thing to make sure is that everything you want to be included is included. So something that I don't think a lot of us realize because we just go, oh yeah, I'll just pay for travel insurance. Often when you're going through like booking flights, at the end, it'll say do you
want to add travel insurance and you go tickbox. Great, that seems like a good price, but it might not include the activities you're doing. So you need to be careful go through all of the activities included and the ones that I excluded. Because I remember when I was headed and this is again really privileged, don't mind, I'll share. I was going to New Zealand and I was like, okay, cool, obviously going to get travel insurance, but I had to pay more for snow cover because I was going overseas
to ski, which was really really fun. But then also in the ski package there are exclusions like you can't go off pissed, you can't do all of this other stuff like helly skiing, what off pissed? Sorry, No, it means that like you're skiing on the non groomed runs. So like if you go skiing and there's like groomed runs, that's skiing on groomed field. If you go up the top and you kind of go a bit rogue god bit cross country that's called off Pieced skiing, And yeah,
it's not included. Sorry, I feel like it makes me sound makes me sound real rish, like when I talk off Pierce skiing, like I don't do it because I'm very much of a chicken. If you think I'm leaving this Blue Run, you are wrong. I'm not leaving the Blue Run. I will stay there. I am there for the app ray ski. I want the appar role in the snow. That's why I go ski. My husband, on the other case, I think he goes there to try and kill himself. Yeah, I think he just goes, you
know what, straight down the double black Diamond. Can I skate?
He's like, well, we'll find out.
Chin Box is not going to cover.
Stiff No, no, no no.
So you've just got to be really careful about what is in isn't included, because things like whitewater rafting might not be included. If you're going to Bali and I think that, you know, you might think that's a really good thing to do. Cars might not be included. So it's important to make sure these things are included before you go into it. And it can be a bit of a boring exercise important though. On top of that,
an emergency fund. I don't know where you're going. You said a month, a month in the south of Italy, different story to a month in Bali. Obviously those things cost different amounts of money. On average, I'd probably be looking at having maybe about twenty percent of your travel costs in an emergency fund should something happen. This is above and beyond you're like spending money and what you're actually planning. This is in case something happens and you
need to get emergency accommodation or an emergency flight. It's going to depend on your circumstances as to what is applicable because I don't know. Maybe you booked non refundable flights. What if you booked flights that are flexible and you can just change the date on them, that might change
how much emergency money you actually need. Because Jesse, if you needed to get home early, we could just change the travel booking for forty dollars, whereas maybe you booked with a cheaper airline where you don't have refundable or changeable flights. Well, to get home early, you're going to have to book an entirely new flight, and that may be, you know.
Six hundred dollars, it might be two thousand dollars.
You don't know, So it's really important to kind of look at what that looks like. In a perfect world, you don't use your emergency money, and I know that you go, oh, what's the point in having an emergency fund for travel? I think it's really important to put it to the side. But hopefully you get home and that money can either go into your pre existing emergency fund to top that up, or it can go into your next trip. So it's not going to be money
that's wasted. It's money that's going towards something really practical and some I think that's actually going to you know, put you in the best position. And what's better than having a stress free holiday, Like you're not going overseas to stress. You're going overseas hopefully to have a bit of a break, and I promise you're going to be far less stressed if you feel like everything financially is sorted.
Question, does your holiday emergency fund need to be a separate emergency fund from your regular one?
No, it doesn't, good question. It is a good question, thank you. No it doesn't.
But I think a lot of people are in circumstances where they might not have an emergency fund yet, and they ask this question. If I personally was going overseas, I wouldn't be allocating money to a specific emergency fund
because I have access to my normal emergency fund. But I think a lot of people are in circumstances where they might still live at home, and they're like, oh, I don't really need an emergency fund or their emergency funds just like three or four hundred dollars because the bank of Mum and Dad comes into it.
Let's be honest.
It's a very privileged position to be in, but that's the real of a lot of our community. So I think it's important to go have I got an emergency fund that I could use for travel. If the answer is no, we need to create it before we go. And if the answer is yes, then we can just rely on the pre existing one. But at the end of the day, it is important to have access to money if you are not at home, It's important to have access to money at all times. But I think
baby steps are really important. And if it's like your first time traveling overseas and you're eighteen and you're not really sure The answer is yes.
Yeah, I wish eighteen year old Jess had thought about that before she got her iPhone stolen in a foreign country.
She was fine, wasn't she?
She was fine, but came home no money and no iPhone.
Oh sucks to me.
What did you do? Just go into debt to get in your iPhone? Because that's probably what eighteen year old Victoria would have done. Yeah, samely, lib'er all on the same page.
Did you feel a bit wholesome having screen off?
Time's not phone addicted.
Then, so it wasn't you know?
Yeah, that makes sense.
If you took my phone off me, i'd legitimately feel naked.
Yeah, yeah, I feel like that.
Yeah, like she actually would. Yeah, let's be honest.
All right, let's move on because this week, Jess, we have a community concern that I think it is going to get a little bit heated. And I don't mean heated from this table. I feel like I feel like I've learned bex ways of the world thus far.
I feel like on the yes, sit on the fence, don't have a note.
I feel like we're going to be on the same page about this.
Okay, I have a very clear like as soon as I read this question, I was like, there is one answer in my mind and one answer.
Agreed, agreed, and I feel like we're all going to be on the same page. But I want to see what our dms say. Okay, So our community dilemma was this, It's aid, hello, ladies, a bit of a weird one for you. I drove my girlfriends into the train station on a night out because everyone was a little bit too poor to a for manouver, so I volunteered to drive us all in The place I parked ended up getting me a parking fine in Bracketts. She said it
was dark and I didn't check the parking signs. I'm feeling a little bit salty now, and I know it's my fault, but I feel like we should be splitting this between all of us. I took one for the team, and I also used my fuel and none of us noticed the signs. So I don't really want to be coughing up one hundred and twenty three dollars for a parking fine at the moment.
So much money for a parking fine.
Yeah, that's very like there used to be like eighty dollars.
Yeah, Max, even seventy. I'm pretty sure I've paid one before that was like seventy dollars.
Yeah, it's insane. Lation, it's insane. Do you know what?
Like side note, parking in the city is going to cost you the same, so maybe just risk it for the biscuit.
Yeah, I do that. I do that.
I do that.
I mean, I feel like we're all going to agree on this.
I would not. Jess would never risk it for the biscuit. She'd pay for the parking.
I know it.
Yeah, oh you paid the parking. But if you did get a fine, yeah, and you were driving your mates around and you got a fine, I personally would one hundred percent pay the fine. But this is all by yourself or by myself. This is my little hack though, And.
Are you about to say, are you about to say, just never volunteer to drive your friends around?
No, much worse, much more. I just don't pay it. And then but wait, but then it goes to it. No, it goes it goes to VIC fines. And then I jump online and do pay in installments and I do like ten bucks a month and then I can pay it off. It doesn't feel like anything that's gen I.
Just gotta wait, what are you two doing? That is debt?
No? I mean yes, yes, yes you can existed.
Yes it is debt, but I believe like it's a payment plan. It's not as if you're taking out a loan, And I believe that. I feel like that's actually a really sort after to pay then to pay differently for.
Different because I feel like if you just cannot satom paying one hundred and twenty three dollars in the parking fine, then honestly wait until it goes to VIC fines and then paid off as as fast or as slow as you need to.
Yeah, where do you sit on this? Because now I feel like maybe we don't have the same.
Yeah, I'm kind of confused.
I thought we were all going to have the same opinion.
Do you think they should split it?
I'm assuming given the context of the message, so saying you know, we all couldn't afford that, uber like, it's not I am in a full time working environment where one hundred and twenty three dollars, you know, could be split over a few months and become palatable. I'm getting the vibe I'm picking up that they're unique students I think that there should be some hey, we got a fine,
what should we do and have a chat? Like I would be mortified to find out that Beck got a parking fine for driving me to the train station and then she didn't say anything to me, Like I would not want her to be financially impacted by helping me or doing something for me, especially if the driving was a joint decision of Beck and I. I didn't see it either, Like I didn't see the signs either. Why would Beck see the signs? I think that it's some of my responsibility.
I fully see where you're coming from, Like I completely understand that logic, and I think, like, are you.
Saying that if I get a fine, I've got to pay for the whole thing?
I just think I see myself out on this one. I my stands on this, and like I'm the same as you. I think if someone drove me somewhere and they got to find like I would want to contribute.
But I think it's.
Very different to being like I drove everyone and I want people to put in for petrol because they knew that I was getting in and they were going to drive, versus ultimately you as the driver made a mistake. That was your responsibility to look in the same way that if you had gotten a speeding fine, Yes, I would say the same thing, like that's yea as the driver, particularly of a car of people who did she say they've been drinking.
No, she didn't say they've been drinking. I think we just assumed because they were, like.
You might have had a couple of beverages, perhaps even like regardless of whether they had to.
I don't want someone to be financially worse off because I didn't.
I agree, Like, I agree.
I think the nice thing, yeah, I would be for maybe be like, oh my god, I got a parking fine.
How annoying.
I'd pay your parking fines, but you wouldn't pay mine.
I'm happy with that outcoud No, But I just think if you're taking on the responsibility of driving in the same way that you take on the responsibility of not hitting someone with your car as the driver, you take on the responsibility of not speeding and getting a speeding fine. You take on the responsible and it sucks. Melbourne parking
the worst. The signs so confusing. Like fully, no judgment from rebabe, I've been there, but I do think, and I know that she's not gonna like this answer because it is kind of a sucking answer because she's wanting us to have her back.
But I've got your back. Might not, but I do.
Emotionally I do.
Yeah, technically technically not, but I emotionally do.
In reality, if I got a parking fine, you've met me. Do you really think I'm just going to be accepted sitting down, I'm going to be arguing it. I'm gonna be like, okay, cool, where were the signs? I didn't see them? Can you please provide the photos of my.
Car coming full circle? Situation sucks. Don't support that either? Do the payment things or did you know that you don't just have to copy fine? You can argue it, and you can say if you've never had an infringement before, they're very likely to be kind and let you off with a want if you explain the situation you say it was time.
I've never had infringement because I've talked my way out of every single one of them.
Wow, that's really impressive.
No, that's not true, that's gabby.
I've definitely had one instance where I felt like I was not at fault and I said that, and I, you know, the system was really kind to me, and they system was going, yeah, they the finding.
So I feel like, if you're.
In that situation where it was really dark and maybe the sign was covered by some leaves or whatever, the worst thing you can do is appeal it and see what happens so that nobody is stressed financially. But I think if I was the driver, I would just be.
Copying it on the chin personally. But what are the people say.
I did.
I thought that you guys would have my back, and then you did it.
It's like a conger line of having each other's back.
Yeah, okay, the common line circle and it's just you two holding hands watching me stand by myself in the is.
Yeah, nowadays, I really okay different.
So it turns out I'm actually in the minority here.
That's kindness. I'm fine, I'm not vacation.
I'm not surprised you guys are happy with this. I'm not paying for lunch today. Just so you know, there were a fair few comments, all of them really validating the two of you.
It was their own fault. They're the driver.
I don't want to be splitting the cost for something that was not my fault because I wasn't the driver. Someone did say, get it, queen, thank you. I'd offer to split, as it's not fair on the driver. Someone said I'd just be too scared to ask my friends to split it, so I'd just pay it. Someone said, sadly, I really think this one's on the driver. If you got a speeding ticket, would you expect them to split it. I swear you've got little minions in our community. Jessica
who just comment on things to have your back. It's just me from ten thousand different accounts, be bothered.
She's got really great opinions.
Someone said, I don't think that they should be paying. Maybe they should have paid for some fuel or shouting in a drink or something, but not the fine. Someone said this happened to me on the Gold Coast. My friends just sent me their share without me even asking.
Oh that's nice.
See, that's nice.
They are the types of friends I want to have, knows. Someone said, perhaps not splitting the whole cost, but they definitely should have contributed towards petrol. I feel like everybody's just beckon jests team today, Yeah, splitting it. Everyone could have checked for parking signs and they drove and news petrol. Someone said, Nope, Unfortunately, the cost goes straight to the driver unless a friend pointed out where to park and they disregarded it.
That's a good point. That is a good point.
Yeah, if you're the passenger, that is not your responsibility. Someone else said. Someone said, I think you can always ask your friends, but be prepared for them to just say no. So I'm not going to go on and on because I genuinely think that you guys might be in the majority here and I'm in the minority, and going on and on is actually going to put me in a worse off hole. So, you know what, I'm
going to pay for the parking fines. Moving on, I'm not going to ask you to pay for my parking fines because you guys, you know you guys.
Will be walking.
Your driving past. So yeah, we'll see you on the flip side.
See you then, Bye bye everyone.
