Episode description

Rev. David Boisclair, interim pastor at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Overland, MO, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Ecclesiastes 10:8-20.

Though our work may have useful intentions, that does not guarantee safe outcomes; the logs we intend to use to build houses may end up bringing harm to us. Still, Solomon commends wisdom for the sake of bringing success to work. Fools may speak many words, thinking that they know what will happen, but such foolishness only leads to evil madness. This is particularly harmful when the fool is a king. Through all the twists and turns of life, the fear of God is the only refuge any of us can truly have.

“Wisdom for Life Under the Sun” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Ecclesiastes. Solomon’s favorite word in Ecclesiastes paints a bleak picture: “Vanity of vanities! All is vanity!” Apart from God, life is nothing but vapor that does not last and can never be grasped. Yet Solomon does not leave us in despair. He shows us that life does have meaning in the faith and fear of God, from whom all things come to us as a gift.
