In today's episode, we're going to talk about if you ever wonder what type of medication really affect your erectile function and whether they cause ED or not? Stay tuned for the whole episode. We're going to dive deep into this. What medication commonly is associated with erectile
dysfunction as a side effect? Now, disclaimer, if you're on any of these medication, I want you to talk with your doctor first before you decide to get off of it. I'm just mentioning some of these may be contributing to the ED and if you have other factors that contribute to ED, it may even make it worse. It may not be the primary reason why you have ED. Again, discuss with your doctor. These drugs I'm mentioning, they work through various mechanism that alter or lower blood flow
or hormone levels or even neurotransmitter activity. So here are the most common categories and specific medication that's linked to ED. Number one, antidepressant and psychiatric medication. Antidepressant medication, particularly called the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs and serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors or SNRI are among the most frequent culprit that they can reduce libido,
delay ejaculation, or even cause erection difficulty. Common medication Prozac or fluoxetine, sertraline or Zoloft, Lexapro, Paxil and Celexa. Other medication called the tricyclic antidepressant, called amitriptyline or brand name Elavil, imipramine or Tofranil. Antipsychotic such as Risperidone, Paliperidone as well. Number two, blood pressure medication. High blood pressure drugs often cause ED by reducing blood flow to the penis or altering the vascular blood vessel function. Diuretic and
beta blockers are especially problematic. Diuretic are medications that help you urinate out the water, and then beta blockers are the one that decreases your heart rate. The diuretic such as hydrochlorothiazide, chlorthalidone. And then beta blockers such as metoprolol or Lopressor, atenolol or Tenormin, propranolol or Inderal. And other antihypertensive like clonidine and methyldopa. Number three is opioids. Painkillers suppress testosterone production, reduce libido, leading to ED.
Medications such as morphine, oxycodone, OxyContin and methadone. Number four, hormonal medication. These drug interfere with hormone level and directly impact your erection function. These are anti androgens like flutamide and bicalutamide. And other medications such as Lupron and Zoladex and estrogen containing medications as well. Yes, these are over-the-counter antihistamine and antacid that work for allergies and acid reflux, and can cause Ed such a diphenhydramine, ranitidine or Zantac, and famotidine which is Pepcid. Number six, recreational drug. Substances like alcohol, nicotine and illicit drug such as cocaine, marijuana, can
impair erectile function. Alcohol, now more than 14 drinks a week. Other medications such as amphetamine and barbiturates. Number seven, chemotherapy drug. While chemotherapy drug kill cancer cell, but it can also damage blood vessels or nerve as well too. That's why some of the most common side effects of hair loss and neuropathy. Medications such as cyclophosphamide, busulfan, commonly cause for ED. Now, consult with your doctor before discontinuing or altering
So I hope you find this helpful. It will mean the world to me, if the medication. Sometimes you can replace them with another medication that may have less side effects on your sexual function. But discuss this with your doctor first before you change anything at this point. However, if you have to stay on this medication, there are alternative to counteract this. What are the alternative to counteract this? Number one, it is a penis pump. A penis pump will bring in oxygen to the
penis to help with blood flow. Don't forget about that. Don't forget about diet, the Mediterranean diet. Don't forget about exercise, 30 minutes every other day, or every day if you can do it, even just walking, hiking, bicycling, either inside or outside. Don't forget sleep seven hours at night time as stress reduction. I can tell you, if you add these lifestyle factors, and it can make a lot of difference. And stop smoking,
porn and moderate your drinking. So there are other modalities that you can add that will help with your erection while you're on this medication. I know because medication, you have to take it for various reasons. Also, testosterone replacement you subscribe, get notified or share this with somebody who you therapy can also help as well. You can get it through injection or pellets or even through gel. So there are definitely other complimentary alternative in addition to taking the
medication, if you have to take it. But again, discuss this with your doctor, and maybe he or she can replace it with another medication. And just know that there are other alternatives as well too. I have treated many men with ED that while they are still on the medication, they still regain function with framework called the Get Hard System, and then on top of that, incorporating the Mediterranean diet, exercise and sleep and stress reduction strategies as well.
