In this sermon, we formally welcome a bunch of new members into the Seven Mile Road family by looking at Lydia's. She was a beautiful exemplar of what it looks like to believe the gospel in community and throw ourselves full-heartedly into the work of gospel advance.
In concert with our Training Day for all Seven Mile Road Musicians, this sermon cast vision for singing together from 2 Samuel 6, where David (the King) humbly and self-forgetfully joins the people in exuberant praise to God for His grace. We love David for what he did that day (and also how he responded to Michal when she criticized him for it) and want his example to shape how song response happens at Seven Mile Road.
In this sermon, we preach on the theme of “Working Hard & Resting Well” from I Corinthians 16:15-16 and Exodus 23:10-12. We also announce plans we’ve laid for giving Pastor Kruse a “sabbath” from his regular pastoral duties at Seven Mile Road this Winter, walking through the basics of what a pastoral sabbath is and why we believe the timing is right for this now.

A gospel culture shares lots of meals ... and doesn't stress about the food being served. We are justified by faith in Jesus, not by keeping the right diet, and so we are free to enjoy a variety of culinarities without fear, guilt, shame, or judgment. This includes tofu, Ring Dings, kale, Popeye's chicken, almond milk, Dr. Pepper, and whatever else might show up at the table. In this sermons, we eat up this glorious doctrine and the implications it has for our life together.
Do we stay where we are, in our comfortable way of life? Or, do we go to where Jesus is, bearing his reproach? This was the intense decision that the first century Christians had to make. Were they going to keep practicing their Jewish traditions, customs, and rituals, or where they going to leave that behind and go to Jesus, taking on the shame and disgrace and reproach that comes with it? It’s the same question for us today.

In the gospel, we are united to Christ AND to one another, like a body and its members. This gospel reality is not something that we make it happen, or that we can unmake from happening . It IS. What we get to do is recognize, revel in, and align our lives with it. One implication is what we energetically set our hearts and hands to SERVE for the gospel good of everyone. Here we go!

One of our missional essentials at Seven Mile Road is "hospitality." We want every Bostonian we meet, in every context we meet them, to feel like Seven Mile Road was specifically built with them in mind. This only happens as the Spirit fosters in us a "love for the stranger" or "love for the outsider to our community." This love is at times seems unnatural for Christians, but it's an important part of what it means to be a gospel people.

This Sunday the author of Hebrews takes us on a metaphorical journey to two mountains. Telling us about both destinations, it becomes obvious which is better. The better destination is where the followers of Jesus have come. This better destination is an unshakable kingdom that calls us to live differently. So how do Bostonians live in light of this? The warnings throughout Hebrews crescendo in calling us not to refuse God’s voice but devote ourselves to Him -for our God is a consuming fire.
In this sermon, we tie the calling of a new pastor at Seven Mile Road with a helpful text from Hebrews on how we are to relate to the pastors Jesus gives us. The truth is that pastoral ministry is heavy work, so we are called to be as helpful to our pastors as you can by trusting them & responding to their lead in our lives.

Our good Father visits us with hard providences throughout our lives, but we can take comfort because we know that He is working in the hardest realities of our lives for our good, making us holy, fit for heaven.
