Hello and welcome to . Seo is not that hard . I'm your host , ed Dawson , the founder of KeywordsPeopleUsecom , the solution to finding the questions people ask online . In today's episode , I'm going to discuss why building topical authority has benefits in areas other than SEO .
So if you've been listening to anything that I've been saying over the past few episodes , you'll know how important I believe building topical authority is into websites for SEO purposes .
You know you grow your visibility by building out authority , building out clusters of authority-based content , and that over time , will give you great visibility in the search engines , in Google , and will build up a huge number of keywords that you will start ranking for without having to have a human-based strategy .
So hopefully you're sold now on why authority building works and you've seen the examples I've shared and how I've done it and how other you can see how other sites do it and how it's really key as a strategy to building your sites . But it's not just about SEO .
If you need another reason to do it , there's actually more to it than just SEO , because when you're building content that the search engines love , you're also actually building content that people will love and that will lead to your website being more powerful , working better for your users and customers and better for yourself .
Okay , so what are some examples of what we're talking about here ? Well , the first one is you'll encourage better user engagement . So if you've made your content related to each other and easy to navigate , you will keep readers on site for longer .
I've used the example of Wikipedia before , which I think is a great example of how good content interlinked to each other will keep people on site on topic and exploring a subject in depth . So you get that user engagement . The more engaged users are , the less likely they are to go elsewhere . You will also support your commercial pages .
So if you're looking at buying something and you're doing your research , if you can get all your research done in a place that you can also buy from , it works for you in two ways .
One , as a consumer , you know that you're going to be happier buying off an expert in a product rather than someone who's just trying to shift boxes , because if they're just trying to shift boxes , they don't really care whether you're buying the right product . That's right for you .
They just want to shift that box , whereas if you feel like you're being supported by an expert who really knows the products they're selling and the reasons why you should be buying and what the right product for you is , and they can demonstrate that in their content . Then you know it's good for you if you're a user .
You know it's good for you if you're a site owner . So supporting those commercial pages gives you better leads and will lead to more sales . So at this point you're now starting to create positive brand experience through the useful content . So this is where you can start to differentiate yourself from your competitors .
By having a brand experience so in depth , so in detail , there's no need for anyone to go elsewhere because they now know you are the expert on your subject . Whether it's something you're trying to sell , whether it's information , whether it's a digital product , whatever it is you're showing , you're the expert , you've got all the information .
No one needs to go elsewhere . You've got that positive brand experience that's going to turn visitors into customers . You're also going to maximize your existing content . What lots of site owners , especially in early days , especially within each sites , they tend to just post their content in chronological order .
So , as you know , they just post it as it comes to them , post , post , post and the post just follow each other and they never really are organized into logical structures . The more that you can logically structure your content , the more evergreen it becomes , even if parts of it you have to go back to now and again to bring up to date .
The fact that if you logically structure stuff so that if someone's interested in a particular product type or area of the subject that you're covering , if stuff's logically placed together , then it becomes more useful for people who are deep diving into that subject .
Another additional benefit of creating this topical authority and becoming the authority in your subject where people can see that you're answering all the questions , is it actually becomes a back linking strategy without having to build backlinks .
You will start to attract natural backlinks from people who have got sites that are sort of adjacent to your area but they're not looking to build a site in that area but they want to help their users who've got an adjacent issue or a adjacent problem or an adjacent question . They will start to link to you .
So this in itself will bring extra visitors to your site , but it will also help with adding that external link authority to your site and in a way that you just cannot replicate by buying links , because these are the kind of links which Google wants you to get .
These A they cost nothing , they last for a long time because they tend to be from sites that are in related , adjacent niches , are much more topically relevant and they're gonna boost you in a way like no other links can .
So , overall , apart from just the basic part of topical authority , which is to convince the search engine that you're an authority , you're gonna gain all these additional benefits that we've discussed , and that's really around engaging your customers , your users , about building additional links to your site , but improving your conversion or optimization , so you will convert
more of your visitors to customers with greater purchase values . And remember that this will make your site so much more helpful , which will help you convince Google not to penalize you in , like they have done with lots of sites , with a recent helpful content update which has hit lots of these sites that tend to be post-based and just chronological orders .
That's where people with sites are missing a trick because they're not clustering their content together into topical clusters and to build that topical authority to make their site more helpful . So this is why I totally encourage people to get on board with topical authority . Answer people's questions . That's why people search .
They have a question they need to answer , problem they want to solve , and you do that by finding out their questions and answering them . So hopefully now you've got a good overview of why there are additional benefits to topical authority other than just SEO , and that you get going on this and look into becoming an authority builder ["Totally Authoritative"] .
