Hello and welcome to . Seo is not that hard . I'm your host , ed Dawson , the founder of Key with People Usecom the solution to finding the questions people ask online . In today's episode I'm going to talk about monetising your website with display ads .
Anyone who spent any time on the internet will be aware what display ads are , if only by site to recognise them . They're obviously they are the banners that appear on all sorts of websites that advertise other companies , products and services . So you know you'll see them there , especially on news websites , and lots of blogs use them too .
Common types of ads you'll see are the banner type ads that will be on the top sides or bottom of a page . Sometimes you get ones called interstitial ads . These are the ones that appear on a separate page before users redirect to the page they're actually linking to .
You also get rich media ads and they're the sort which have forms , videos , that kind of thing in them . So if you see a website with display ads on them , you know that that website is earning money from those ads . There's two main ways that they earn money .
They will be paid either for a user taking an action such as clicking an ad , so they are paid on a CPC basis cost per click . The advertiser pays for every click or they will be paid per thousand impressions , which is called RPM , revenue per minute , or some people call it CPM .
There's lots of three letter acronyms in display advertising and you'll get used to them in time . But yeah , essentially you need to get paid if someone clicks on an ad and in some cases you get paid some views on ad . You know you obviously get paid a lot less per view , but you get paid for every view as cost per click .
You'll get paid a lot more per click but you'll get a far fewer clicks . So a lot of ad networks will maybe split the actions across , whether something's you get paid CPC for , some you get paid RPM for . So it varies , but they'll try and work out the most efficient way for you to earn money with those ads .
The great advantage of display ads is that you don't need to do a great deal of work to get them up and running .
If you listen to the previous podcast where I discussed affiliate marketing , where there's a lot more work involved in getting affiliate relationships set up and then getting those affiliate links embedded within your site , with display ads it's a lot easier .
All you really need to do is sign up with display network , who will be the people that will provide the adverts onto your site and set it up , which is a one time deal , and then that's it .
The rest is all taken care of where your ads will be sold on your behalf and they will be tracked on your behalf and they will be placed on your site on your behalf . So it's really quite simple . That's a lot less to think about . Let's look at how you actually get display ads placed on your website .
The first thing you need is obviously your website , so I'm going to assume you've got a website that is set up and has got all the basics done . If you're just starting out , the first network ready to consider is Google's AdSense network . They're not the best network in terms of what they pay .
They're not the best network in terms of the help and support you'll get from account managers and things like that , but they do have the lowest barrier to entry , so you can start with AdSense with zero traffic .
There are no traffic requirements from the other networks required to have so many thousands of visitors per month things like that which you're not going to have to start with . Adsense is a good place to start . Just go to adsensegooglecom and click the sign up button and you'll then follow their application process . It's quite simple .
Take a few site details , talk about the type of ads you want to show , and all those kind of things . Once you've done all the setup process , you just have to save and get code , and that will give you a little bit of code that just needs to be copy and pasted into your website .
Once you've finished your application and put the code on your site , then Google will review your website to make sure it fits their terms of service .
There are a few sites that they won't work with , so things like if you sell alcohol , tobacco , drugs , adult content , shucking content , anything illegal , so they do have certain things they won't work with , but most 99.9% of topics and issues they will work with . Once you've been accepted , then Google will start putting ads on your website .
Now you can obviously choose placements yourself manually and choose exactly where to put them . Well , the easiest way of doing it is just to let Google automatically decide where to place the ads in your website , and that's the simple way to get it going . So you just wanna get going quick .
Go with auto placement If you want to have more fine control on where it goes within your content , then you can specify exactly where you do and don't want ads , and on a very basic level , that's it . That's it . You've got started with display ads and you will start earning revenue from your website .
Obviously , it's traffic dependent , so the more traffic you get , the better . But how do we make the most out of it , our earnings ? How do we earn the most out of display ads ? Well , once you get past a certain level of traffic , you can start looking at other display ad networks .
Now these networks may have sort of more stringent requirements on the type of sites they work with . Some would only specialize with long form blog content . Others will need particular traffic levels . Some of the other networks you might want to look at would be those like Monumetric , mediavine and Raptive .
These all say they offer higher RPMs than AdSense , and from the people I know who use these yet they all confirm this . So yeah , but you've got to have certain traffic levels to get there .
So yeah , I always say start with AdSense in the first instance if you've only got low traffic , because it's so easy to get onto and it gives you that head start and gets your users used to having ads on the site and gets you used to designing ads into the site in the right places . People often ask how much can I earn from display ads ?
Well , it's going to depend on a fee . It's going to depend on a few factors , obviously . The first one the amount of traffic you get to your website . The more traffic , the more you're going to earn . The topic of your website , the niche of your website . Some niches will attract display ads which pay much higher advertising costs than others .
So if you're in a tech niche , that might earn more than in a recipe niche . It's going to depend on where your users are , and so if you get more traffic in so the US , the UK , those kind of countries , you will earn more than if you're getting traffic money from a country such as India . Time of year can also vary a lot .
I'm going to queue , for in certain niches we're in the room to Christmas will you earn you more money than other times of year . But it's niche dependence , so you'll know when your niches have there or any seasonality in them , and it can also depend on pure economic factors . So during the pandemic , people were earning a lot of money .
So a lot of money went into display advertising because there was a lot of e-commerce going on , because people weren't going out to the shops . Since the pandemic eased off there , the earnings have dropped , the RPMs have dropped and so people have . A lot of people in display advertising have said you know , that's seen the difference .
So those are the factors that can affect how much you will earn . But the real key one is really how much traffic you get in and where your users are and your niche . That's the thing that will determine it most . So how do I use display ads ?
Well , on my sites which haven't got enough traffic yet for me to be thinking about going through the effort of adding affiliate marketing to them , I will use these display ads , and I'll tend to use them not immediately . I personally like to let the traffic build up a bit .
First let Google get the site indexed and look at it , with out ads on it , and then , when we get to a certain level and this varies by niche I will then put AdSense on .
Usually I've never bothered with any of the media vines or raptives , because by the time I've got a site at that level , the niches I'm in tends to be more effective to use affiliate marketing rather than display ads Although you know , maybe I'm missing a trick , because some people I know do display ads and affiliate marketing as well but for me , I use them in
that position . Before I use them In that position , before I get to worrying about the overhead of affiliate marketing , I just want to start getting some revenue from a site once it's been indexed by Google and it's ranking okay .
Display ads tend to work best if you don't want to be bothered with affiliate marketing or another way of monetizing , if you just want to concentrate on your content . You've got a real passion for your content and you want to write content without thinking about how it might monetize , so it's really good . Lots of people have travel blogs use it .
Lots of recipe sites use it , so one's where it might be . There's an obvious initial sell or known , obvious product to sell to people . What are the downsides of display ads ?
Well , there is definitely the case that if you overdo it , you can ruin your user experience on site to local newspaper websites in the area of the country I live , there have so many display ads that it makes the website almost unusable . There's so many that by the time it's loading in new ads . It's constantly moving the page around .
Especially on mobile , it can make it almost impossible to read the content . So there's a fine line between getting it right for your users and your income and completely overdoing it and ruining the experience for users , which means that they're less likely to read more pages , which means you actually make less on the display ads because you've overdone it .
So there's a fine line on making getting that experience right . This can also have negative effects on your Google rankings . While they say AdSense doesn't in itself have a negative effect , if you've got too many ads , like in the case of my local newspaper website , you could potentially be harming your rankings and the helpful content update .
Some of the evidence I've seen is definitely going to be part of that is based around too many adverts on a page . So that's the area you've got to be careful with . Google aren't completely against display advertising . They've got their AdSense network themselves .
I think they appreciate that people have to earn at least a little bit of money from their websites , but there's definitely as a line . You need to be careful not to overdo it . If you use your common sense , you should be okay . So , in a nutshell , that is display ads . They are really easy to get going with .
There's very low barrier to entry , but you can actually scale them to significant income . I know people like they're earning five and six figures a month from display ads . There are companies out there earning many millions a year from display ads .
So it's a very , very strong way of earning revenue If it suits your niche , if it suits the website , if it suits your audience . Thanks for listening . I really appreciate it .
