Episode description

A parts-informed reflection on Acts 16:22-26, “The crowd in Philippi joined in the attack on Paul and Silas, and the magistrates had them stripped and ordered them to be beaten with rods. After inflicting many blows on them, they threw them into prison and instructed the jailer to guard them securely. When he received these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell and secured their feet to a stake. About midnight, while Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God as the prisoners listened, there was suddenly such a severe earthquake that the foundations of the jail shook.”

Today we are joined by Pam Malinoski, the integrator for Souls and Hearts. Speaker 1: Today's reading is from the acts of the apostles, chapter 16 verse 22 to 26. The crowd in Philippi joined in the attack on Paul and Silas, and the magistrates had them stripped and ordered them to be beaten with rods. After inflicting many blows on them, they threw them into prison and instructed the jailer to guard them securely. When he received these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell and secured their feet to a stake. About midnight, while Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God as the prisoners listened. There was suddenly a severe earthquake that the foundations of the jail shook. All the doors flew open and the chains of all were pulled loose. As I reflected on today's gospel, I'm reminded of one of my biggest breakthroughs in my personal parts work. For most of my life, as a mother of seven, I've had this unreasonable fear of being abandoned by my children. Before I began my human formation work nearly five years ago, I never understood why. Over the course of several months of work, I started to get to know this part of myself, who I call Mia, which was the name of a doll I had as a child, I reflected on the birth of my own children, who were all born during a time of rooming in at hospitals, birthing centers and home births. And I compare that with my own birth in 1969, which was a time when they gave my mother a general anesthesia and forced my father into a far off waiting room while whisking me to a hospital nursery. Speaker 1: I think Mia picked up her fear of abandonment in those very first days of life outside the womb. And although I had a pretty normal middle class upbringing, whenever anything resembled abandonment as I grew up, Mia Wood snag those moments as proof of the danger of abandonment. One manager protected Mia by overachieving another by being a little clingy in relationships and a third through self sacrifice. They were not going to let me be abandoned. Eventually, this burden was like a prison that we hear about in today's reading. But just as Paul and Silas were set free through their faith and prayers, I was set free and away from this burden as I started becoming more integrated. When Mia was imprisoned by this fear of abandonment, every time I corrected, Disciplined or had conflict with my children. My system was rife with anxiety. I lost many nights of sleep during many teenage years. Now that I understand Mia and I understand what parts of me are trying to do to protect her, my innermost self can help, support and guide her to understand that God will never abandon us. And as she started to understand that and have a relationship with God, Jesus, and Mary, that burden of abandonment can be lifted from her. She is then free to love more purely instead of an agenda driven love that's given out of fear of abandonment. I can better love my children, many of whom are now adults, because they are made in the image and likeness of God and worthy of love. Period.
