Episode description

We welcome Luther House of Study's Nick Hopman back to Scripture First to discuss the text for Christ the King Sunday: Jesus on the cross between two criminals at His crucifixion.

The Messiah is supposed to be glorious. Yet, here Jesus is. Hanging on the cross. In fact, people all around Christ are tempting Him to be the glorious Messiah and save Himself.

But He doesn't. He takes on the sin of the world. Jesus dies. There's no way around it. And we are baptized into Christ's death. We go to our crosses too. But Jesus is the resurrection. Jesus meant it when He said, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

Adam, Kiri, and Mason ask:

  • What's Christ doing asking God to forgive them?
  • Why are they asking him to save himself?
  • How does the criminal know Jesus is the Messiah?
