¶ Elevating Team Huddles
Hello and thank you so much for joining us today . We are super excited to be diving into one of our favorite topics , which is team huddles . So maybe you've had them , maybe you haven't had them , maybe you've been exploring the idea wherever you're at in your journey .
We are super excited to be diving in to really how we can elevate our team huddles and set the intention for the day . We've got a great system to make an amazing huddle happen . So if you are excited , you are in the right place . We are pumped to have you joining us today .
I love that , and it's football season , so it's the perfect time to really think about if a football team didn't huddle before every play , or didn't huddle before the game , what would be the outcome that they received , and just thinking about that is like wow .
Being able to create that quick connection point with your team so that you can create a strategy and an intention for the day in my opinion , helps us set your day up for success , and when you have a successful day , everybody is enrolled in playing the same game .
Yes , jen , I love that .
When you said that , what came to mind for me was all of the buzz around Travis Kelsey and Taylor Swift right now and I just I'm loving , you know , just seeing all the funny memes and everything all over social media and I just wonder , hey , if you know Trav was really distracted by Taylor Swift being in stands how would the Kansas City Chiefs be playing right
now ? You know it's same thing inside of our salon companies . We'll have exciting stuff going on outside of work all of the time , and so how do we make a winning team while we are in the same space ? So I love that you said that . That's a great way to look at it .
Love that . So what and when do you do ? Huddles Like huddles really , I like to call them connection points as well , because it's just a really quick opportunity to get your team grounded and you know they don't need to be a 30 minute meeting . The intention is really just to create the strategies of the day .
It's to really look for opportunities today and control the energy of the day , because I know that I've been in huddles before and felt the energy be kind of low and then left that huddle feeling more inspired and ready to take on the day .
Yes , and , man , the ripple effects that that have inside of your company are just phenomenal , you know . So I love that you said that . I think that we've got a great way to kind of look at this . Jen created an amazing outline on how to create , you know , that quick yet powerful team huddle model , as you said , a team connection point .
And it's the grit method . You know , and I think grit is amazing . It stems from , you know , passion and perseverance , and so when you're passionate and you can persevere in any situation , wow , just the results that you can get in your life are phenomenal .
And so I think this is an easy method that you can , you can utilize as a salon owner or your leaders . People on your team that you know are helping just really expand everybody 's thoughts and vision on the team can lead a meeting with this really simple outline .
Yeah , and this was born because , like you know , as salon owners , it's a great opportunity to delegate this to your , to your leaders or whoever may be of higher opportunity for you .
And what I discovered is , sometimes it's a beautiful gift to teach them is because a lot of times , as leaders , is they don't know even how to start a huddle right , and so they will ask the same thing every single day .
Every single shift change like here are our goals for the day , here's our daily number for the day , here's our productivity , and those are all great . But sometimes that creates a sense of what we like to say overrun . And when you work with your team and you're saying the same thing every single day , they get a little bored .
You know , when you're in school as a kid before and the teacher would teach something and you got it right away , but then she'd have to continue to teach it kind of get a little bit bored because you've got it and you're ready to move on to the next thing .
So having the opportunity to do something a little different every single day allows people to be more excited to come to the huddles or connection points , because they're not going to say , oh , I know what Jen's going to say today .
She's going to say the exact same thing , and I'm going to be checked out because I already know exactly what she is going to say .
Yes , I love that that is . That is such a powerful message that you just shared , really , because I think we've all experienced that in some aspect of our life where we have felt like , oh , here we go again . It's the same song , same dance . You know , I already know , I know , I know , I know .
So we're here today to help you snap out of that , break out of that and really , you know , create that energy and that passion and that purpose inside of those team huddles so that they do really create a winning team . And so let's go ahead and dive in to that . First portion inside of the grit grit model is to get present .
You know , I think this is one of the most powerful things and that's why it starts at the beginning is because we all need to get present .
When we walk into the building , you know , we all have lives outside of our salon and spa companies that we really just need to get present into the moment , notice our teammates around us , see what's going on , so that we really can be set up for the rest of the day .
You know , and when we look at the word present , you know it truly just means what's occurring now , what's happening right now , so it's the present moment . It's not the past , it's not the future . It's just about finding that presence right now , in the moment , together , as a team .
Yeah , I love that and you're thinking okay , so how can I get my team present ? Like I'm present , I'm ready to rock . Well , how can I get my team present ?
And sometimes it's just getting connected to the room , like have your team stand in the circle and look at all four corners of the room , because as human beings , we usually have four million different things running through our brain subconsciously , or we just had we were running late for work or kids were late for school , so we're bringing all that into a new
space and carrying that energy with us . So getting connected , getting grounded to the
¶ Building a Supportive Team Dynamic
environment that you're in at the moment can create a shift in your attitude and create a shift in your beingness .
I love that . That's a great way to get present with the room and this space . I think some other things that we love to do are we love to stretch together . We'll stretch our hands , our wrists , all of the areas that just need a little extra love inside of our industry .
When we're together and just sharing in that we know , hey , we're honoring ourselves , we're getting present together . It's just a really great way to honor your body and get present with the people around you .
Yeah , and you can have some fun with this too . I mean , a good old dance session will always elevate some energy . So one of our favorites is we are family , we love to play that and just to get our bodies moving and in motion . One of our leaders today I can't take credit for this she said she did a compliment train .
So we stood across from each other and then for 30 seconds we just went back and forth giving each other compliments and then after that she said okay , in the circle , just share the compliment that stood out to you the most . So it's just whatever you can do to get present , elevate that energy and create connection is the result that you're looking for .
I love that . I think another thing , too , that we find powerful as well is doing some sort of breath work . A lot of times we'll close our eyes and do either some sort of like circle breathing or square breathing , where you're breathing in , breathing out .
So if you circle breath , that really does give you some good energy , and if you square breathe , that really just kind of helps make you more zen and present .
So an example of a square breath would be breathe in for two seconds , hold for two seconds , breathe out for two seconds , hold for two seconds , and then you just keep going in that square of breathing . And then circle breathing is just breathe in for two seconds , breathe out for two seconds .
You're just going back and forth , and so that really does create some good energy and momentum .
And breathing is one of those things that we just are subconsciously doing all the time , and so when we can bring it to our conscious thoughts and really pay attention to it , you can start to see , gosh , that really does change my mood and you might even start to notice , hey , like if anybody on your team has ever felt anxious about a situation , you know ,
they're probably doing some sort of circle breathing , you know , which can help raise your energy , but if you're not aware , it can also , kind of , you know , make you tired or anxious , you know .
So just being aware of our breath , I think , is a powerful thing and a powerful tool that you can help your team understand so that they can , you know , really regulate your body through your breathing , and it really is a great way to get present in any situation .
I love that . So we have the G , we're going to get present . So what is the R ? And the R is remain curious . As a team , as a unit , you're really trying to create something that's magical and where everyone works together , because that is the beautiful gift that creates , in my opinion , exceptional guest experience . So during the R , the remain curious .
This is where you get to lean on each other , ask who needs support today ? How can we support each other ? Maybe your hospitality host is out today ? Who can cover guest services at this time , at this time ? What products are we out of ? Because that's always helpful . You've ever gone to educated guests on a product and it's and it's .
You're out of it on the shelf , you're like dang . So it's always good to know what you have in stock , what's on its way . And then you could also look at some current promotions . Just hey , where's a win that you've had on the current promotion that we have set up now ?
Where are the opportunities anyone have a great success story about your promotion , about our promotion that you've had over the last couple of days .
I love that . I think , you know , anytime you can have an opportunity to celebrate a win is huge , you know . I think it's also important during this remain curious section that you really do check in to see .
You know , with that support , you know what people need specifically , so maybe you might have a newer teammate on your team that you know it's been a little while since maybe they've had like a perm or a Brazilian blowout or a keratin treatment or whatever it could be .
You know , maybe it's not a service that they're regularly doing , so they just kind of want to mentally run through that and so that's a , that's a great opportunity . Or somebody might look at their schedule and say you know , I've noticed that . You know , I would love to offer this service to Suzanne but I don't really have the time for it .
But I noticed that you have the time for it , so is it okay if I offer that to her if the time still remains ? You know , I think it's a . It's a great place to look for those , you know , cross promoting ideas .
Maybe you've got a spa department and somebody has an opening for a facial or even like a mini service that somebody could get during a processing time .
I think that this is a great opportunity when we're remaining curious , that people have come and they've looked at their schedule already for the day and they kind of know of some areas that they might need support or some areas that they might support others . I love it .
I love going to a meeting and someone saying I saw your schedule today and I've got an opportunity to help you blow dry that guest at this time , or I can help you turn that room during this time , or whatever it might be . I just think that that's such a beautiful way to connect and feel loved and supported by a team during that room . I'm curious .
Yeah , I don't .
We keep talking about football , but could you just imagine if they didn't have a strategy or play and they just threw people out in the field and say , oh , good luck , hope we get that touchdown ? Yeah , it's like we . Sometimes we do the same thing in our salon companies and they expect an amazing result . And there's no intention .
When there's no intention , it's hard to grab the attention of your team . Which brings us to the eye , which stands for intention .
Yes , this is . This is an amazing one . It's really setting that intention for the day . What is it that you are trying to achieve ? And I think you know , having both an intention for your salon or spa company , along with all of the teammates on your team having an intention for their day , is really a powerful you know support system for each other .
So during that intention portion you can go over what's your productivity goal for the day or what's your reservation goal for the day . You know . Sometimes just speaking it out loud helps it come to fruition .
And making making sure everybody on the team knows like , hey , this is what we need to hit as a salon company to really be able to serve our community big , you know , and for our team to , you know , have a great you know income and for our guests to really get served in a big way . I think setting that intention for the day is such a powerful part .
Mm-hmm . I love that and I think the way you said it is sets you up for success too , because I've seen this before . There's like , okay , our productivity was 85% , our reservations were 22% . Okay , team , let's do better . Well , you're probably not going to get . That's probably not really landing with your communication style .
So you know , just think of ways that you can elevate that language . All right , guys , our productivity yesterday was at 75% High five , great job . Let's talk about what's something that really worked to add on yesterday . Anybody have a great share with that ? Or , hey , our reservations yesterday was at 22% . Does anybody ever win ?
Is anybody at 80% by 85% in reservations or prebooking , whatever you may call it that wants to share exactly the script that they're using that's getting them to that 80% to 85% ? So I think you really , too , have to really look outside the box sometimes and say , hey , how can we use the language that we're using ?
Make sure it's elevated and grab that attention .
Yeah , and really , jen , when you said that it's like creating that hero moment , like you want to have heroes on your team that are like , hey , here's the way I can show you how to make this possible versus , you know , if you were to stand up and be like , did you hit your goal ? No , okay , did you hit your goal ? No , okay .
You know , like , if you're in an environment like that , it does just feel like it steals your life out of you . You know it's like you go into daydrained instead of revitalized and excited , and you know .
So looking for those heroes that can help paint a picture for other people on the team , I really think is key to help people see a different way , because you know , sometimes it's hard to see it for yourself , especially if you're a newer team member .
You're not quite sure how to get there always , even though you're , you might have told them , you know , 50 times .
Hearing it from another hero on the team is so powerful and they can start to see , okay , that person's a little bit closer and level to me , or I've seen them grow or I've seen whatever that is , so they're almost more willing to try that than they are hearing it from someone who has become at that expert level and so looking for those opportunities when
you're in that intention portion , I think is huge . Just the support that it can create and the portals that can open for people are amazing .
Yeah , and you know you have a really strong team . When you say , let's say , someone's getting ready to earn a career promotion or level jump and they're only like a couple hundred dollars away and they have a couple days left to be able , in that section of I say , hey , you know , Lindsay is really close to reaching level four .
Like , does anybody have any way they could support her in that ? Like you know , just that really knows that you've taken your team to the next level . That is no more about I , it's about we and about us , and I think that's when magic really happens .
Yeah , he sure does . I love that . And so now we've gotten to the T portion in our grit team connection point , which stands for team celebration .
And so this is this is a fun way to end off your , your team connection point by celebrating your wins together , so really just creating that energy and momentum to go go into the rest of your day and and make it an amazing day .
You've gone through , you've gotten present together , you've remained curious , you've set your intention for the day and now let's celebrate , because we are going to have a kick ass day part of my language , but it's going to be that way after this great team connection point and and so really celebrating and anchoring in some of those wins together is the best way
to to step onto that platform or the stage of doing your services .
Yeah , so , hands in the middle , countdown with the word of the day . You can give each other neck massages . Get prepared for that exceptional guest experience . It's just that , one way to call forth exactly what you're going to create for the day .
I love that neck massage . That sounds amazing right now . Who doesn't want to be a part of a team that has neck massages to kick off your day ? I think that that's brilliant . Oh well , good . So you know , really , looking at this grit team connection point , you can set up so many people for success on your team to do this .
You know and I know Jen mentioned earlier that somebody did a compliment train on her team and so giving them this connection point outline and letting different leaders or potential leaders on your team kind of have some freedom in the creation of this I think is so powerful , you know , cause you really can .
You know , along with all of the the beautiful service providers that we have on their team , they all come with an amazing brain too , full of great ideas .
And you know , when you create that space where it's open and we're open to trying new things and we're open to elevating , looking for ways to elevate , you know your teammates just can really expand and help expand the company , just just because you've kind of created the space and shown them some ways to do it and they're able to elevate it even more .
Yeah , and you know , there's probably some things of not to do during a team huddle and I think my biggest advice to that too is , like there are gonna be times that there are situations that need to be handled . I totally get that , and there's gonna be conflicts and disagreements and that's okay . That's what makes a great team . It's just , you know .
But you're gonna set the stage , your leaders are gonna set the stage of . If the whole entire huddle or connection point is coming from a place of negativity , that negative energy is gonna fluctuate throughout the entire salon space for the entire day . So just be very aware about the grit that you're using to create that connection point .
And what is your energy like ? What's your leaders team energy like ? And I always like to come from the place of . I know not everything has to be positive , but there's sometimes ways that you can handle conflicts in a positive way as well .
Yes , I love that , Jen . So if you would like , we actually have a complimentary resource available for you that really goes through that grit team connection point . So if you would like a copy , we will leave how to get that in the show notes below . So feel free to check that out and sign up .
We'll send that over just to really help you elevate your salon company .
Right and remember . This only has to take five to eight minutes depending on the size of your team , probably two minutes for each GRIT . So it's not a meeting , it's just a quick connection point . So get grounded , remain curious , get that intention out , celebrate that teamwork and what's your team ? Elevate and create some new opportunities .
I love that , and if you want some more context on your particular business or you wanna learn more about the PhD program , shoot us an email at hello at thephdprogramcom . We would love to hear from you . Or if you have any ideas for another show . We love serving our industry .
