Well, this episode of the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio is brought to you by the great financial support of our listeners.

Thank you so much for your support. Well, this particular episode of Rogues Gallery is entirely outside the canon of what we've heard so far. This has no relation to Fitch his Shampoo, Dick Powell, or the original run of the series. And it's the only week in the twenty three week period

that began five weeks ago that our program didn't originate with NBC. In the early fifties, ABC was trying to gain traction as a network, and one thing they tried to do is rather than coming up with original new concepts for a radio series, they decided to do new versions of previously canceled shows. Some examples of this ABC did Michael Shane radio program, they did a casebook,

a Gregory Hood program, and they did Rogues Gallery. In addition, they were somewhat fortunate to get Richard Diamond over to their network, so there was a brief period of time where Richard Diamond was running at the same time as Rogues Gallery. ABC chose for the star of this program Paul Stewart. Stewart was best known for his association with Orson Welles. He was a Mercury

Radio feeder player and also appeared in Citizen Kane. Stewart would go on later in his career to have success on television, directing episodes of series including Peter Gun, Michael Shane, Hawaii five All, and The Twilight Song. And we'll hear from him again at least once more when we play the Mercury the presentation of the Glass Key. And this episode came from November fifteenth of nineteen fifty It's called the Janis Croll Murder Case and it's the only example of Paul

Stewart as Richard Rogue. Rogue Garry starring Paul Stewart as Richard Roge. Some people collect old violins, some people collect rad silas, some people collect old coins, but I collect murderers. Now Rode Gallery with full Stewart as private Investigator Richard Rogue. As far as I'm concerned, or roads weeks to Chicago. You see. I was born here down on the south Side, and I know every spot on the Gold Coast, the smell of the stock yard,

the swimming in Lake Michigan. I can look my way around the Loop line fold one of the falest night chapters, The Loop with Matt Larry's. One day I just bought a tie there and zigzagged my way back across towns. Was a heavy traffic on State Street, and I got to my office. I said that someone was waiting for me, mister Roke. I us the child Road, the private investigator, a Sumerchard Road. I've been here now is the customary the officer I can to go off for hours? And

did y'all be nicking your door? Unlock? It's the gypsy and the lady. Now what can I do for you? My name is Elster Cool. I'm here from Little Fars and Lana a terrible years. I'm for Teliver in Chicago three days go and last act was shotly killed in our room between nine thilly and m pm. Right. I don't know what to do,

mister rogue. The police called me into the protract and I had a head to say that too. I arrived in Chicago at ten this morning. Grannis was a good grin at the Rogue's not the wild thought at all. I just can't be her. And Grannis was rather young to have a sister who was almost hemmedn't a politeness rock I'm sister ge she was twenty two. I was doing the concern let's have children. Janis has been my responsibility. Can talk to her and staff. I feels in this troop two Ferson Frigi,

such as, perhaps I can help you coming year. What was Jannis doing in Chicago? He had a notion to her own stage. Did she know anyone? He is not a stow nobody, not very helpful wherever you go at the police. I told him everything. But I talked to him the tenty two and he told him nothing. I'm making nothing. But Denina was a visted. You see another thing of what you would for well, I know that the Entertanney's a good cor I want to live no stone under

trying to find Jannii's murder. You thought, mister rode for twenty five dollars a band expenses next less than the fat man gets. Oh just one question, miss Croll, what grade school do you teach? Well? How did you know the tea? You remind me of the teacher I once had when I was a kid. But there was a lifetime ago. I dropped out the crowl if there was in the third grade hotel not far from my office.

And then the cat swung across caught homicide. A high wind was whipping in from Lake Michigan, and the signs on State Street were swinging merrily, and I knew what it was about. Time to get my winter overcoat out of more balls? Don't father or not rope you farg righting fifless entertanning? What can I do? I'd like to know what you know about the crows? Here I'll join. My client is ulti crow the dead girl's sister. Here's the report, and I want more than this, and I want the

routine hand up or what do you want? And whatever it is, I can't give it to you. Look, Pop, my client thinks you were holding some vital information. Ja she does Dennis Clo a pretty girl. He was about it burn shut by someone who stood close by he probably knew here about who don't know? Thirty eight rugged say here thinker Prince unaccepted the seas he's on the boddy showing this posito or the money does a butt Nam House Diick and a Marie Castle? How my recast who had two shots from the

room next to her, she called the other see any reason Trove. We're working though. You can tell me that's right. Look, Chenny, this is my client too. You can tell me. Listen, sweetheart, you're going to have me around anyway. So do we work together or do? Okay? Okay? Roll? But if I call you anything, it goes no further. It's a deal and a specialist, right, I gave you my word. Okay, let's cigarette case as song in the girl's hands bag

in the room. Now that's silver. Judge Harris, the judge weeding a double life. Oh look, I've known Judge Harris a long time. He's a family man. I'm nice man, and he wouldn't be mixed up in a mess like us. And in that case, I'm sure he won't be embarrassed if I asked him a few questions. My friend, Lieutenant Kenny phones you were coming? Is it to help or in the well to help? Does he? Judge? You don't mind if I ask a few questions. That's what you're here for, isn't Did you know jonnas Clove? No?

I never met her, and you weren't that the Bret mon So Tellatrol last night I was not. But your cigarette case wise, let's see incredible part of this whole business where, how or why I got into bedrooms beyond me? Comment Kane, you think someone's trying to freeze me? When was the last time you remember seeing your cigarette case? Yesterday? Just before lunch? And you wouldn't mind telling me where you were last evening between nine thirty and

Since Martha and the boys are away, are about some chess tonight, make it about nine thirty of my apartment if you can find jim I walked over to his apartment about nine thirty. He wasn't there, so I came home and scared. Jimmy Martinton. Substantiate this telegram, No, Jimmy to nine sending it Jenny tracer Is. It was phoned in from a paydatiue, so I can tell you, Judge

Harrotts, are you sure you're telling me the whole truth? I pick your partment, mister Rod's judge, the chips are down. You're not the judging this case. If it comes to try your lover to be a defendant, I suggest you take me into your confidence. I intend to do just that, if you'll be patient better. A week ago, Jimmy Martin came to me and asked me to declare a mistrial and a tree Mont cater. I

was shocked. He've been friends for years. Jimmy Martin has always been an honest, fortsright politician, and frankly, I'm indebted to him for this judge ship three month straight set trueman lest he the gamble of we shot that copy merchant here? Now? What was Martin's interesty tree moonth I had no idea. I naturally refused to discuss the case. Well. He left in anger, but he did call me an hour later and apologize. As a matter

of fact, he came into my office here today. That is very interesting. Why is that? Why is a crooked letter, judge? And sometimes you have to wait awhile until it scrapes itself out. Good night, your honor. I went over to see Jimmy Martin's club. I was rated by an afferda group of wardeels. They parted out the sank and sank car and and sitting behind a huge guest was a long cigar, a short fat face in the bald head. Yes, mister Martin, I Richard Row, priate

detective aunt. That's right. I'd like to ask you a few questions about a case I'm working on. Why should I answer your course as a throw or you may leave my vote someday? I decided to check that with Chenney for some information on Jimmy Martin. Jimmy told me that I'm a Knight of Jennifer's murdered Martin as at the fad with some friends. But I'm checking back story. I found that the first to dess to a little gimmer party in the covered wagon room of the Bad Mom's hotel. The honor recruited Mary Castle's, a singer who heard

the shots, and salamt Pasito, the hotel manager. Well, I thought i'd tried the cave yat on the covered water room myself. It's the ism in room three or four and the jealous Crow was in three h two. Yeah, by all the questions, where that's the way I am a living. That's nine. Oh, by the way, a bumping new friend of yours with Jimmy Martin. Jimmy Martin, I don't believe I'm knowing you were

I couldn't have a lightly figure out why someone would want to kill us and crows. In a few minutes, I was standing with ford table in the morgue. Then she laid, didn't look like a school teacher anymore, just a nice old lady Rode. She wasn't the old chimney, She's just the kindless born old let's

It is morning and it can at rogue, I tell you why question dreaman for hours? I got nothing a break. There's a loose key around somewhere that fits this block, and I think it's treemak on now, impassible. Look at

it this way. Jimmy Martin awardly the goes to the judge and asked him to take it easy on treemunthin, but judge says no. Then the judge gets a phony wire and he's out on a limb with no alibi. Neither Martin put the judge on the spot or the partny expression. The judge is lying, but judge didn't lye that. I know I can vouch one. I admire your loyalty, but bet amend them the judge of skeletons in the closet. Well, pardon the aggres of an old cop, but what will

I should have been sweepy, but I was too hopped up to shove

Thanks that please, he wrote, BROA wait a minute, Oh hello Sham has the hotel business? What are you doing here? So RELI shall I say about? Well? No? No? How? Ready to get off? Third floor? Now? These flowers are sound proved to drown out the traffic noises to our guests can fruit. They haven't got brains enough to keep the dog closed when they're making

repair. Very interesting this hotel business. A by the way, here the great time has it that Jimmy Martin is cutting in on your girls a strictly a stage door Johnny all talk with the rock that he gave Marie from hook Trammy boy. I left the sam standing there simmering to a slow boil, and went in the Genisis room. I found the usually with Max's closing the business, sort of bottles of skim lotion in her handbag. Her handbag had

twenty dollars and from Chunes. No, why should have died with twenty dollars to a named robbistering the hotel whether chief is room is ten bucks a day? Which one of the characters in the Chicago Moraser. I knew the prow sisters and who set up Jealous and this lush plush the mbers too quiet and depressing for number word. So I have to get and went back over the himies on the Gold Coast co and tsing coffee. Hell over man, than let's come new straw up him. Nine o'clock in the morning. Yeah,

doubling Sunnia, what's with you? My al stircasing shadow of the crole murder. Paul it into two now. Somebody knocked at my client last night. You know when you lost out the fast this morning? And there's something about that hotel. I went into the Britaman you walked toward room three h two, heard the carpenters working, making a lot of more. It's with them, comforable roller. I'll find plan you turn out to be. You went back on your deal with me, and I'll have your head breasy with hot

I was half through a scratch on the rocks when a surprise, beautiful to my room and out of the room. How did you know I was coming here? Was all figured out like a game of ships. Well, Goding, you play along, I don't think so. Come on, let me alone. But the judge isn't here. You won't be able to kill

him, sweetheart, How are you talking about a corp? And to Marie, he followed up your story, coppinger, what cop I'll spell it out. You heard the shot that killed Janus rolls like you told me at the covered wagon because you fired. But you see, Marie, you forgot that all the rooms in the third floor at the hotel of sound proof, so if you were in your room, you couldn't have parden be shut. Smart smart enough. One thing I don't know is Tracy Treeman your husband or brother

my broth that figure your brother faces the janitor. You decide to frame the judge by planning the cigarette there, I'm Dennis after your shot? How did I get the judge's cigarette? Kidimmy Martin got it for you or you had her do? Is to make him four for you, which wasn't hard, baby, that's so. Then poor Elsie Troll spots your picture outside of a covered wagon room and recognizes he was an old pupil of us from Littlefold. So she goes to and begins to think maybe had something to do with Dennis.

So you had to make it murder number two and kill her? What can you kill? Couldn't stop once you got going to that, but off you gave a start of a newspaper, knowing you would stop the trail. But you still have to deal with Jimmy Martin. He wouldn't go as far as murder, so you had to kill him too. What is your finn? Who? Who is all yours, lieutenant. Why won't fuck watch her? Don't let Annie get your guns? All then about uld it up?

Janey gave her the escort treatment down the headquarters and got me on the way of my house. The noonday sun was hanging over Chicago and made my sleepy eyes stay. And as I stumbled up the stairs to my apartment. No, oh, no, not now you're gonna I'm tired. I joined my lad you found the game and jud and no delay, will love you evermore. We hope you enjoyed the night story in this two series, and we'll be back at you you next week. As we hope too, that you'll be around and help hang another portrait in row Galler. This program with transcribed to its coming to

you from New York. This is a DCS American Broadcasting Company. Welcome back. Well this is be a friend, but not in a bad way. I actually like the series. Paul Stewart does a great hard boiled eye presentation. A lot of differences. The big one is the settings and the supporting characters. You have a new police commissioner and the setting is in Chicago,

whereas Rogues Gallery really had more of a Los Angeles feel to it. But that but they did a good job I think with the setting and the music and kind of a different portrayal of you Gore rather than him having to be knocked on the head to get to hear root you Gore. I'd actually like to hear more of this, but this is the only episode that's in circulation, unfortunately. And one thing to note here is according to the Digital Delhi's

estimation, Paul Stewart made more hearrances as Richard Rogue than anyone else. Dick Powell made a total of sixty seven Rogues Gallery episodes. Paul Stewart made seventy two and of course Barry Sullivan just made the fourteen from nineteen forty seven. But this was a fun series and I hope there are more that emerge.

It's kind of hard with ABC shows. And by the way, there was a reference to another ABC show when he mentioned that he did not charge as much as The Fat Man, which was one of perhaps ABC's biggest and longest running detective programs from nineteen forty six two fifty one. And we will be doing The Fat Man later on this season, but that will bring down the curtain on Rogues Gallery. Join us next week for our new Tuesday show,

Candy Matson. I should note that this week is the first time we've had four of our five programs set in the nineteen fifties, but next week we're going definitively back to the forties four Candy Matson.
